The Acura MDX is a mid-size luxury crossover SUV with three-row seating produced by the Japanese automaker Honda under its luxury Acura division since 2000. First generation (YD1; 2001)
Derived from Honda's Global mid-size platform which underpins cars like the Honda Accord, Acura TL, TSX and Odyssey, it is powered by a J35A3 3.5 L SOHC 24 valve V6 engine with VTEC. Curb weight is 4,451 lb (2,019 kg), with a 106.3 in (2,700 mm) wheelbase and 8 in (200 mm) of ground clearance. The cargo floor can flip up to provide two additional seats. The vehicle is designed to hold 7 passengers, but the third row seats are small and only seat two, in contrast to the Odyssey and Pilot whose third row holds three passengers.
The vehicle features an automatic four wheel drive system (named VTM-4) that engages during off the line acceleration as well as when wheel slippage is detected. Additionally, the system offers a lock mode which can be activated and operated at low speeds and provides permanent 4WD and the equivalent of a locked rear differential; designed for climbing steep hills and getting out of stuck situations. To reduce drivetrain noise and increase fuel efficiency, the system runs as front wheel drive during normal cruising. The VTM-4 AWD system in the MDX has the same design as the VTM-4 systems found in the Honda Pilot and Honda Ridgeline. It is different than Honda's "RealTime AWD" system in the Honda CR-V and other models in that it can lock and it attempts to predict when traction will be lost and apply power to all four wheels before slippage occurs (by monitoring throttle inputs).
The navigation system and DVD entertainment system (also popular on other Honda/Acura models, such as the CR-V and Odyssey) options were mutually exclusive in the 2002 model. Both could be ordered at the same time since the 2003 model. The navigation option comes with a backup camera since the 2003 model. The first two model years' 3.5-liter V6 engine produces 240 hp (179 kW) and 245 lb⋅ft (332 N⋅m) of torque from 3000 to 5000 rpm. For the 2003 model, the engine was improved to produce 20 hp (15 kW) more power than the earlier models, and the wheel designs were updated. The 2004 through 2006 engine received a modest increase in power and produces 265 hp (198 kW) and 253 lb⋅ft (343 N⋅m). The 2004 model is credited with a top speed of 137 mph, and a 0-60 time of 7.1 seconds. The 2004 model features dual tail pipes instead of the single pipe in earlier models, side curtain airbags, new head lights and tail lights, and new wheels. Some chrome trimmings on the 2004 model use matte finish to distinguish from the polished shiny finish on earlier models. Little changed for the MDX during the 2006 model year with a few minor revisions to the vehicle's chrome and faux wood interior trim which could now be had with a dark grey wood (as opposed to reddish wood on earlier models), and also a black dash and steering wheel in tan interiors.

There was a warning light that said "Check emission" The ABS light would come on as well I had to try to get the car into the far right lane and restarted the car. I was able to restart the car and made it home with the car periodically completely shutting off. As I was driving the radio would briefly go on and off as well. This was the first time this had happened. The safety issue was that there was absolutely no warning and at the time I was traveling with traffic. I UNDERSTAND THERE IS GREATER FORCE ON THAT PART WHILE THE CAR IS OFF (NO POWER STEERING), BUT THE STRENGTH OF THAT JOINT SHOULD HAVE SUFFICIENT SAFETY MARGIN TO WITHSTAND THIS. WHAT IF IT WAS JUST DAMAGED ENOUGH AT THAT POINT THAT IT STILL WORKED, BUT WENT ON TO FAIL IN THE HIGHWAY? 70 MPH AND NO WAY TO STEER THE CAR. SCARY. THE CAR IS OVER 10 YEARS OLD AND HAS JUST UNDER 200000 MILES, BUT I WOULD EXPECT A COMPONENT THIS CRITICAL TO BE ONE OF THE LAST THINGS TO FAIL ON A CAR.

THE YELLOW CHECK OIL LEVEL LIGHT HAS COME ON FOR NO REASON FOR YEARS. IT GOES ON FOR A SECOND THEN OFF. A FEW MONTHS AGO THE ENTIRE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM 'FRIED' AND I HAD TO BUY A NEW BATTERY AND NEW ALTERNATOR. RECENTLY I HEAR A BUZZING SOUND WHEN I USE THE TURN SIGNALS AND THE HAZARDS DO NOT WORK AT ALL. LAST NIGHT THE CAR DIED ON THE INTERSTATE- THE INSTRUMENT PANEL WENT DARK, THE ENGINE WOULD NOT ACCELERATE, AND I WAS LUCKY TO BE ABLE TO GET ONTO THE SHOULDER. I TURNED OFF THE CAR AND THEN STARTED IT AGAIN. WHEN IT WORKS THERE IS NO PROBLEM WITH THE OPERATION BUT THIS CAR IS NOW UNRELIABLE AND DANGEROUS. I AM SIMPLY CONDUCTING MY DUE DILIGENCE IN REPORTING MY VEHICLE AS IT HAS BECOME MY PROPERTY AND HENCE, MY NEW PROBLEM.

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO COLUMBIA ACURA INC. (10979 MONTGOMERY RD, CINCINNATI, OH 45249 (513) 530-0100), BUT NO DIAGNOSTIC FAILURE CODES WERE FOUND AND THE FAILURE COULD NOT BE REPLICATED. THE VEHICLE WAS THEN TAKEN TO SUPERIOR ACURA (5555 DIXIE HWY, FAIRFIELD, OH 45014 (513) 829-8500) WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE BATTERY CABLES NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED, BUT THE FAILURE RECURRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE AND CONFIRMED THAT NO RECALLS WERE ASSOCIATED WITH THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 100,000.

THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED; HOWEVER, THE FAILURE RECURRED TWO DAYS LATER. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 103,500. THE VIN WAS NOT PROVIDED.

TURNS OUT, SUNROOF DECIDED TO FLIP UP ON ITS OWN DURING THE DAY WITH THE CAR PARKED AND OFF. TOOK CAR TO MY LOCAL SHOP WHO HAS BEEN FAMILIAR WITH ACURA ELECTRICAL PROBLEMS. I TOLD HIM TO DISCONNECT THE WIRES TO THE SUNROOF FUNCTION COMPLETELY. I DONT NEED TO USE THE SUNROOF OR HAVE IT DECIDE TO OPEN ON ITS OWN AGAIN. THIS PROBLEM COULD HAVE CAUSED EVEN MORE SERIOUS ELECTRICAL PROBLEMS, BUT LUCKILY WATER DID NOT PENETRATE TO THE OTHER ELECTRICAL SYSTEMS. THIS IS THE THIRD MAJOR ELECTRICAL PROBLEM I HAVE HAD WITH THIS VEHICLE. THERE ARE SERIOUS ELECTRICAL PROBLEMS WITH THE MDX AND ACRUA/HONDA REFUSES TO ISSUE ANY RECALL OR EVEN ADDRESS THE PROBLEMS, WHICH ARE PROMINENT IN THIS VEHICLE

I hope you're doing well! I wanted to share my experience with the car I picked up on 11/21. I took it on a 300-mile trip right off the lot and it was such a comfortable ride! The side view mirrors and driving position are great, and the custom features are really impressive - you can design this car however you want! The sound system is very nice and the navigation system is the easiest I've seen, although the voice commands are a little rough for me so far. The Bluetooth is awesome and I was able to link up my phone in just a few minutes. The acceleration is solid, especially in the 60+ range, and I've been averaging 20 MPG in freeway driving so far. I also added a solid metal roof rack, sport running boards, and a D/N mirror, making it the perfect family car!

Great handling for SUV, plus plenty of room for this class vehicle. The electronics are pretty intense, but they are learnable and the car is full of amenities. Although the engine doesn't sound as sweet as most Acura/Hondas, it has plenty of power. The cabin is very quiet even at speed, and the leather seating is quite comfortable.

My husband and I fell in love with the MDX in 2002 and bought it. When we needed a second vehicle, we got another one in 2003. We kept going and got the 2007 model. Recently, we test drove the X5, which was a nice ride, but for the bang and the buck, the MDX was the clear winner! I love the way the vehicle moves, and the smooth braking action is awesome. Not to mention, the way it hugs the curb as I try to see what it can do... wow! No vehicle is entirely safe, but I feel a sense of security in my MDX. Who knows... I might be riding an 08 in the upcoming months. I didn't think it was possible to improve on the vehicle, but wow... they did!

I'm one of those people who research purchases to the point of exhaustion prior to making a decision. Additionally, I test drove all similar vehicles. Nothing, and I mean nothing, compares with this vehicle for the price paid. Everything about this vehicle is top tier, from the fit and finish to the performance, luxury, reliability, and safety. I feel as if this vehicle is a bargain even at MSRP! Acura has simply produced an excellent automobile at a great price.

Great handling and performance. Lots of room in a moderate size. However, the steering may feel a bit heavy for some drivers. Overall, this car offers a much better value than comparable German models.

Although this car has some drawbacks such as huge side blind spots, uncomfortable seats, and dashboard angled steeply away from the driver, it still has some positive features such as solid luxurious quiet ride and decent handling. It is perfect for soccer moms, but may not be suitable for inner city driving where you need power to zoom up hills and need to be aware of surrounding traffic in case of quick lane changes.

Although this car has had some issues, the engine and handling are great. The dealer has worked hard to fix the problems, but unfortunately, the factory sent them a lemon to sell. While the gas mileage is poor, it is important to note that this is an SUV. I've only had the car for 6 weeks and unfortunately, I've experienced a few issues. The right front door started to rattle the day after delivery, and although it was fixed, the sunroof and front passenger seat started to rattle afterwards. The dashboard also started to rattle. Additionally, the AC compressor makes a loud thump when it starts, and the transmission makes knocking noises when speed and rpm are low. Lastly, the back of the car produces a clicking sound when any of the doors are shut. It's worth noting that the last two problems also occurred in the loaner MDX I received.

I owned the previous model of MDX and I have to say that the new design has lost many extras. Unfortunately, the Bluetooth is extremely poor sounding and the sound is ported through the AM radio, which is not ideal in the 07 and 08 models. I really miss the rain sensing wipers and the day/night mirror, which are now finally included. Additionally, I used to enjoy resting my hand on the open bottom of the steering wheel during long trips. The Bluetooth is a bit of a letdown, as it can be difficult to understand people while driving over 40mph. Despite this, I still appreciate the technology that has been included in the car.
