Chrysler Sebring problems

chrysler logo

The Chrysler Sebring (/ˈsiːbrɪŋ/ SEE-bring) is a line of mid-size automobiles that was sold from 1995 through 2010 by Chrysler. Three generations of convertibles, two generations of sedans, and two generations of coupes were produced. Although the coupe shared the same name and some styling cues, it was mechanically unrelated to the other Sebring models.

The Sebring line was introduced in 1995 with the Chrysler Sebring coupe. It was the replacement for the Chrysler LeBaron coupe. In 1996 the convertible was introduced, replacing its LeBaron counterpart as well. For 2001, both body styles were redesigned and a sedan version was offered, replacing the Chrysler Cirrus. The coupe was discontinued after 2005 with no replacement model planned.

The redesigned sedan was introduced for 2007, and a convertible the following year. New options included all-wheel drive on sedans and an available retractable metal top for the convertible. All Sebring models were replaced by the Chrysler 200 for the 2011 model year.

Common Chrysler Sebring problems

Based on the complaints from owners of Chrysler Sebring cars, several common problems have been identified:

  1. Oil Sludge Resulting in Engine Failure:
    • The Chrysler Sebring, particularly the 2001 and 2002 models, faced chronic issues with oil leaks from the 2.7-liter engine, leading to engine sludge buildup and eventual failure.
    • This problem often went unnoticed until it caused severe engine damage, necessitating costly repairs or even engine replacement.
    • Owners reported average repair costs ranging from $3,000 to $6,000, with some needing multiple engine replacements due to recurring issues.
    • Chrysler's lack of a recall or proactive response to this known problem added to owners' frustrations.
  2. Transmission Issues:
    • Transmission problems are another common complaint among Chrysler Sebring owners, leading to issues like stalling, difficulty starting, or erratic shifting.
    • These transmission issues can result in significant repair costs and affect the overall drivability of the vehicle.
  3. Failed Head Gaskets:
    • Head gasket failures have been reported by owners, causing coolant leaks, overheating, and potential engine damage if not addressed promptly.
    • Repairing or replacing a head gasket can be a costly and labor-intensive process, impacting the vehicle's reliability and performance.
  4. Electrical Problems:
    • Owners have experienced various electrical issues, including problems with the instrument cluster, dash lights, power locks, power windows, and the radio.
    • These electrical malfunctions can lead to inconvenience, safety concerns, and additional expenses for repairs or replacements.
  5. Suspension and Steering Components Wear:
    • Components of the suspension system, such as ball joints, silent blocks, shock absorber support cups, and CV joints, are prone to wear and may require replacement at regular intervals.
    • Steering rack issues may also arise after significant mileage, impacting the vehicle's handling and safety.
  6. Air Conditioning and Heating Problems:
    • Many owners have reported issues with the air conditioning and heating systems, including problems with the blower fan, loud noises, water pooling, and compressor failures.
    • Addressing these HVAC issues can be necessary for comfort and climate control within the vehicle.
  7. Occupant Restraint Control Module Failure:
    • The occupant restraint control module, responsible for airbag and seat belt pre-tensioner functions, can fail due to moisture intrusion or electronic component issues.
    • Failure of this module can lead to airbag system malfunctions, potentially compromising occupant safety in the event of a collision.

These common problems with Chrysler Sebring cars highlight the importance of thorough inspection, regular maintenance, and awareness of potential issues to ensure the longevity and reliability of the vehicle.

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-08-01
  • Date Complaint: 2024-05-16
  • VIN: 1C3LC56K68N
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: Engine frequently stalls while driving. I've had my car shut off while I'm driving many times, the steering wheel and brakes lock up and it makes it hard to get off the street to safety. This happens a LOT. It is very dangerous and scary. I get anxiety everytime I drive because I'm scared of it happening again. My car once turned off in the middle of a busy intersection while trying to turn. It came on after about 45 seconds but it was terrifying. Battery often dies (just replaced it). Horn would go off randomly without stopping for a long time. I had to disconnect the horn (on both sides) because it would keep randomly going off with no way to stop it. Cruise control stopped working one day. Sometimes it comes up when I press cruise control but it turns off when I try setting a speed. Drivers window broke inside, I think something snapped inside the door. I've had it replaced 3 times but it keeps breaking. A/C makes an awful grinding noise sometimes, but it goes away if I turn the A/C off then back on. Also with the A/C, a door or something inside the dash will get stuck every so often and it makes a LOUD clicking like noise but it goes away after about 20 seconds (something to do with the actuator?). Brake light will come on sometimes when I stop. It goes away shortly after I start driving again. ABS light has been on my dash for a few months now. Most of these issues have been happening for over a year now. Most of this shows up under a recall from 2008, ELECTRICAL SYSTEM: WIRING. It doesn't show up under my VIN number but I'm having the same exact problems.

  • Summary: I was driving my car and fault something wrong with the steering and went to make a right turn I heard a noise and my car front passenger side of my car was on the ground and my wheel was under my car. Thank goodness for no one else being involved that day and thank God I wasn't hurt badly... I have never seen or have anything like that to happen to me... I'm glad my children wasn't with me... I'm glad I wasn't traveling down the road when that happened.....
Chrysler Sebring 2008
  • Date Of Incident: 2024-01-02
  • Date Complaint: 2024-01-06
  • VIN: 1C3LC46K48N
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING,ENGINE
  • Summary: I was on my way to work. All the warning light appeared on my dash. Then all the warning light, radio, speedometer gage and all head light and tail lights went out. I was driving in the dark. My engine bogged down no power. I was barley moving. I replaced the battery no difference. I replaced the alternator worked for 3 minutes and then the car was back to the same as before. I contacted a nearby mechanic facility they told me that it was most definitely the fuse panel under the hood. That's its not a recall but a lawsuit replacement. I notified the manufacturer and they told me my Vin number was not under recall. I'm confused on what to do not. I'm in no way able to purchase a new vehicle at this time. Nor spend hundreds or thousands in repairs. Please help.

The week this happened the tire pressure indicator in the lower left corner of Dash was lit up and the cruise control light would come on but when engaged it would not drive at the limit set only reduce is speed the stereo CD changer didn't work I thought it was just because it was old the cigarette lighter which I used for my power source the light on that device would flicker in and out showing it wasn't getting a good connection the key would get stuck in the ignition or do a continuous storage where you it would not spring back as it should you'd have to turn it off and then try to restart it the battery in the fob work just fine before all of this took place now the battery is dead in the fob as well. it won't hold a charge I want to know how it's going to get fixed and with whose money?? $95 for Diagnostic.while covering windows later that night,I was able to see a dim red light where the tire pressure indicator was lit up at the fuses are fine the battery is 6 months old but it is constantly draining I it won't stay charged I can't get it out of gear it to put it in neutral to move it anywhere. Latest negative Chrysler Sebring car reviews

  1. Fern Jacobson 2025-03-29

    Vehicle year: 2004

The car has been reliable for a long time, but now that it has reached 200,000 miles, it requires some maintenance. The power steering belt needs to be replaced, and there are minor leaks in the oil and coolant systems. Unfortunately, the engine bay is quite cramped, and the low bumper makes it difficult to access the car's underside. Despite these challenges, I am confident that I can resolve these issues and keep this American-built car running smoothly.

  2. Reuben Macejkovic 2025-03-27

    Vehicle year: 2005

Despite my negative experience with my Sebring, I can confidently say that I will never buy another Chrysler. The car had a persistent honking problem that caused a disturbance in my neighborhood, and it took six visits to the repair shop before the issue was resolved. Additionally, the car made strange noises and the interior lights flickered. Unfortunately, the motor eventually froze up and stopped working. Both the repair man and the insurance company confirmed that the Sebring was one of the worst vehicles of that year. Despite this, I remain confident in my decision to never purchase another Chrysler.

This car has had a number of issues since day one, including problems with ball joints, axles, brakes, ty-rods, and electrical components such as power windows, seats, mirrors, and dashboard lights. The digital odometer stopped working at 90K and the top leaks. Additionally, the battery has died three times in the course of one year, the door hinges have broken, and the cooling system has experienced multiple leaks. Despite these challenges, I have been able to work with my mechanic to address each issue as it arises, and I remain confident in my ability to keep this car running smoothly.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my car. I bought it used 2 years ago with 60k miles on it, and for the price I paid, it wasn't bad at all. However, a few months after owning it, I noticed a slight knocking in the engine. I took it back to the dealer to get it checked out, but they told me everything was working fine. Unfortunately, six months later, the car overheated and I had to have the water manifold replaced. After that, I had a few more issues, like the window control panel breaking twice and the heat blower stopping working. Even with regular oil changes, the engine eventually died and it cost $2900 to replace, which was more than the car was worth. I think it would be great if Chrysler put more effort into making sure they are selling quality products. Thanks for listening!

Hey there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with my car. I did have a bit of trouble with it, but I was persistent with the dealer during the warranty period and managed to get the water pump, power steering pump, and alternator replaced. Unfortunately, I did have some electrical problems after the warranty expired, which ended up costing me $800. All in all, it was a bit of a hassle, but I learned a lot from the experience. Take care!

I've owned my car for 2 years and 5 months and I still absolutely love it! Overall, I've been extremely satisfied with my car. Although I did have to have the stereo replaced when the car was a year old, the dealer was very fast and courteous about replacing it. The only minor issues I have are with the cupholder location (I accidentally turn the CD player on when I use it!) and the front seats being a bit difficult to move for people getting in and out of the back seat. But, other than that, I still love my car 2 years later!

Great vehicle! With current incentives, it's a fantastic value and a lot of fun to drive. The MyGig system and navigation have some great new features. I usually own and drive BMW, MBenz, and Porsche, but this car gets me more compliments. If you don't need the high-end performance of the MB CLK, you can get all of the fun and features at half the price!

Hi there! I noticed that your car has 83,000 miles on it now, which is quite impressive! I hope you're enjoying it. I also noticed that you're taking it in for its first major maintenance tomorrow, which is great news. It's always important to take care of your car, and I'm sure it will run even better after this appointment. I saw that you've only changed the oil for the past 62,000 miles, which is quite a feat! Keep up the good work. The maintenance is highly recommended, and I'm sure it will keep your car running smoothly for many more miles to come.

I've kept my upkeep on it up to date. I bought it with 98k miles 5 years ago, and now it has over 265k miles, but it's still going strong. It's comfortable and appealing, making it a dream to drive!

A wonderful, fun, reliable, and roomy car. I love it and would buy another in a heartbeat. When it was broadsided by a BMW, it sustained little damage, while the BMW was totaled. It is the best car I have ever driven and I absolutely love it!
