Chrysler Sebring problems

The Chrysler Sebring (/ˈsiːbrɪŋ/ SEE-bring) is a line of mid-size automobiles that was sold from 1995 through 2010 by Chrysler. Three generations of convertibles, two generations of sedans, and two generations of coupes were produced. Although the coupe shared the same name and some styling cues, it was mechanically unrelated to the other Sebring models.
The Sebring line was introduced in 1995 with the Chrysler Sebring coupe. It was the replacement for the Chrysler LeBaron coupe. In 1996 the convertible was introduced, replacing its LeBaron counterpart as well. For 2001, both body styles were redesigned and a sedan version was offered, replacing the Chrysler Cirrus. The coupe was discontinued after 2005 with no replacement model planned.
The redesigned sedan was introduced for 2007, and a convertible the following year. New options included all-wheel drive on sedans and an available retractable metal top for the convertible. All Sebring models were replaced by the Chrysler 200 for the 2011 model year.

Common Chrysler Sebring problems
Based on the complaints from owners of Chrysler Sebring cars, several common problems have been identified:
- Oil Sludge Resulting in Engine Failure:
- The Chrysler Sebring, particularly the 2001 and 2002 models, faced chronic issues with oil leaks from the 2.7-liter engine, leading to engine sludge buildup and eventual failure.
- This problem often went unnoticed until it caused severe engine damage, necessitating costly repairs or even engine replacement.
- Owners reported average repair costs ranging from $3,000 to $6,000, with some needing multiple engine replacements due to recurring issues.
- Chrysler's lack of a recall or proactive response to this known problem added to owners' frustrations.
- Transmission Issues:
- Transmission problems are another common complaint among Chrysler Sebring owners, leading to issues like stalling, difficulty starting, or erratic shifting.
- These transmission issues can result in significant repair costs and affect the overall drivability of the vehicle.
- Failed Head Gaskets:
- Head gasket failures have been reported by owners, causing coolant leaks, overheating, and potential engine damage if not addressed promptly.
- Repairing or replacing a head gasket can be a costly and labor-intensive process, impacting the vehicle's reliability and performance.
- Electrical Problems:
- Owners have experienced various electrical issues, including problems with the instrument cluster, dash lights, power locks, power windows, and the radio.
- These electrical malfunctions can lead to inconvenience, safety concerns, and additional expenses for repairs or replacements.
- Suspension and Steering Components Wear:
- Components of the suspension system, such as ball joints, silent blocks, shock absorber support cups, and CV joints, are prone to wear and may require replacement at regular intervals.
- Steering rack issues may also arise after significant mileage, impacting the vehicle's handling and safety.
- Air Conditioning and Heating Problems:
- Many owners have reported issues with the air conditioning and heating systems, including problems with the blower fan, loud noises, water pooling, and compressor failures.
- Addressing these HVAC issues can be necessary for comfort and climate control within the vehicle.
- Occupant Restraint Control Module Failure:
- The occupant restraint control module, responsible for airbag and seat belt pre-tensioner functions, can fail due to moisture intrusion or electronic component issues.
- Failure of this module can lead to airbag system malfunctions, potentially compromising occupant safety in the event of a collision.
These common problems with Chrysler Sebring cars highlight the importance of thorough inspection, regular maintenance, and awareness of potential issues to ensure the longevity and reliability of the vehicle.

Chrysler Sebring 2008
- Date Of Incident: 2022-08-01
- Date Complaint: 2024-05-16
- VIN: 1C3LC56K68N
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
- Summary: Engine frequently stalls while driving. I've had my car shut off while I'm driving many times, the steering wheel and brakes lock up and it makes it hard to get off the street to safety. This happens a LOT. It is very dangerous and scary. I get anxiety everytime I drive because I'm scared of it happening again. My car once turned off in the middle of a busy intersection while trying to turn. It came on after about 45 seconds but it was terrifying. Battery often dies (just replaced it). Horn would go off randomly without stopping for a long time. I had to disconnect the horn (on both sides) because it would keep randomly going off with no way to stop it. Cruise control stopped working one day. Sometimes it comes up when I press cruise control but it turns off when I try setting a speed. Drivers window broke inside, I think something snapped inside the door. I've had it replaced 3 times but it keeps breaking. A/C makes an awful grinding noise sometimes, but it goes away if I turn the A/C off then back on. Also with the A/C, a door or something inside the dash will get stuck every so often and it makes a LOUD clicking like noise but it goes away after about 20 seconds (something to do with the actuator?). Brake light will come on sometimes when I stop. It goes away shortly after I start driving again. ABS light has been on my dash for a few months now. Most of these issues have been happening for over a year now. Most of this shows up under a recall from 2008, ELECTRICAL SYSTEM: WIRING. It doesn't show up under my VIN number but I'm having the same exact problems.

Thank goodness for no one else being involved that day and thank God I wasn't hurt badly... I have never seen or have anything like that to happen to me... I'm glad my children wasn't with me... I'm glad I wasn't traveling down the road when that happened.....
Chrysler Sebring 2008
- Date Of Incident: 2024-01-02
- Date Complaint: 2024-01-06
- VIN: 1C3LC46K48N
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING,ENGINE
- Summary: I was on my way to work. All the warning light appeared on my dash. Then all the warning light, radio, speedometer gage and all head light and tail lights went out. I was driving in the dark. My engine bogged down no power. I was barley moving. I replaced the battery no difference. I replaced the alternator worked for 3 minutes and then the car was back to the same as before. I contacted a nearby mechanic facility they told me that it was most definitely the fuse panel under the hood. That's its not a recall but a lawsuit replacement. I notified the manufacturer and they told me my Vin number was not under recall. I'm confused on what to do not. I'm in no way able to purchase a new vehicle at this time. Nor spend hundreds or thousands in repairs. Please help.

I received this car just a month ago and I must say, as a car fanatic, I am thoroughly impressed! Despite only having it for a short time, I have already received compliments from women and had heads turning. While I did experience a frozen battery in Chicago and some leaking during rain, these issues will be easily fixed with the addition of window deflectors. Overall, I am extremely satisfied with this luxurious yet sporty car, especially considering it was free! If any issues do arise, I would be more than happy to fix them and keep this car for another 13 years. Great job, Chrysler!

Vehicle year: 2007
I recently purchased this car and was pleased to find that the previous owner had kept meticulous records of its service history and any issues they encountered. Upon reviewing the records, I noticed that the previous owner had experienced some problems with the instrument cluster not lighting up, front tire wear, and MPG. However, these issues were all resolved while the car was still under warranty. The MPG issue turned out to be a non-issue as the previous owner lived in Chicago, where there is a lot of stop-and-go traffic. In the week that I've owned the car, I've been getting 27 MPG on the highway, which is pretty impressive for a car with a 3.5L V6 engine! The only issue I've encountered so far is that the leather seats are quite slippery, but for the price I paid ($4500 for a 2007 model with only 35,800 miles on it), I'm not going to complain. Overall, I'm very happy with my purchase!

Hi there! I've had my car for 2.5 years now and it's been great so far! It's a really fun car to drive and has more interior room than almost any other convertible on the road. I don't understand why some people give it bad reviews. Sure, it may not be a Mercedes or BMW, but for the price, I could buy two of them! It currently has 43,000 miles and has only needed regular service.

This isn't a Mustang, no way! The police know it's not a hot rod. I love it because I don't get tickets for speeding. The Sebring isn't great at cornering, but it has a low center of gravity, making it a great touring car, especially in the Northeast where I live. It comfortably seats four people or five medium-sized people, and the ride is nice. The Sebring gets surprisingly good gas mileage, making it a great car for seniors, families, women, and students. The stereo works wonders too! However, the car is heavy and solid, which is great for safety in a wreck, but not ideal for Joe Hot Rods who should stay away from this one. It's a touring car, not the Indy 500 COP blow out turbo tornado. Also, it can be expensive to repair once it's over 100k miles. You'll need to rebuild the car all the way and use Nappa parts, which is a wise move. Chrysler doesn't make cars for long-lasting use, and every Chrysler product gobbles up parts. The convertible is somewhat better than the rest of the line, but expect to put money into it. Your best bet is to buy from a dealer with a warranty or Joe Mechanic who has kept the car up. Happy touring! Oh, and the AC and heating system is excellent, even with the top down!

Vehicle year: 2008
I was initially drawn to the older Sebring convertible body styles, with 1999 being my favorite. However, after doing some online research, I decided to settle on the 2008 model and I have absolutely no regrets. The car feels very solid and rides like a coupe, not a convertible. One of my favorite features is that the top can be lowered or raised in under 30 seconds with a single push of a button, and I can even lower the top from 50 feet away using the key fob. These are luxuries that were not available with the 1999 Sebring. As my daily driver to the office, I appreciate that I can go top down every day with so little effort, especially on my 40 mile round trip over Tennessee backroads. The 4 cylinder engine performs admirably for my purposes. After owning this eleven year old Sebring convertible for 5 months, I am quite pleased. -- update -- Since early 2020, I have been working from home and no longer have a commute. However, I still enjoy driving this car and seeing it as something to drive and enjoy, rather than a collectible or an investment. Although I don't put many miles on it, I will sometimes make a 50 mile round trip to Smithville just to top off the gas tank. Had I known that owning this car could be so inexpensive, I would have purchased it years earlier. It's fun and easy to own. --- 2022 update: I can hardly believe I am in my 4th summer with this fun convertible. I bought it for just $3800.00 in February 2019, and it keeps paying me back with good times! - update: After four full years, I am still having a million dollars worth of fun in a four-thousand-dollar car!

Our 2004 Chrysler-Sebring convertible has only 51,500 miles. Unfortunately, the front catalytic converter got so hot that it burned a hole in the converter. It's disappointing to experience this issue. However, the warranty for the converter was only 8 years, so we had to pay $1,000 for a replacement. In my experience owning cars for the last 50 years, I have never had a catalytic converter fail before. It's a shame that this happened with our Chrysler.

This car has had multiple issues, including engine knock and a clicking noise when steering to the right. Despite having only 26,600 miles when purchased and 35,567 miles now, these problems should not be present in a vehicle with such low mileage. As a confident statement, I will not be purchasing another Chrysler product in the future.

I bought this car new for my wife and although she loves it, I have had a few issues with it. Unfortunately, we have had to have numerous leaks in the convertible top fixed, as well as 3 sets of front rotors and pads, both door straps, head gasket, timing chain and emissions control computer. It has been quite a hassle, especially since I take very good care of my cars. I also had a 97 Intrepid ES which was a great car, but unfortunately, the 99 Intrepid ES was not up to the same standard. I hope Chrysler can address these issues soon.

Yeah those cheap chrysler rims and the brakes I fixed but it does look good! I had to tape together the bottom of the front bumper from curb and road rash, to low! Nice exhaust sound to bad it doesnt translate into horsepower although it goes if you keep your foot in it. The one thing not mentioned is this cars higher insurance rating, still I'll keep it for awhile its kinda fun. Watch out for those curbs and potholes or you'll be looking for new rims!

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with this car that I bought new. After a couple of weeks, I noticed that the brakes were a bit sketchy when the roads were wet. Even when I slammed the pedal to the floor, the car just wanted to keep on going. The worst part was when there was snow or ice on the road. I brought the car to the dealership twice to have them check the brakes, but they claimed there was nothing wrong. Unfortunately, the back wheels would slip horribly in the snow, and there was almost no control of the vehicle in those conditions. I even went off the road twice while driving at just 5 miles an hour. I had three other people drive the car in the snow, and they all agreed that there was a problem. Despite this, Chrysler refused to admit to a problem or do anything about it. I hope this helps you make an informed decision!
