Chrysler Sebring problems

chrysler logo

The Chrysler Sebring (/ˈsiːbrɪŋ/ SEE-bring) is a line of mid-size automobiles that was sold from 1995 through 2010 by Chrysler. Three generations of convertibles, two generations of sedans, and two generations of coupes were produced. Although the coupe shared the same name and some styling cues, it was mechanically unrelated to the other Sebring models.

The Sebring line was introduced in 1995 with the Chrysler Sebring coupe. It was the replacement for the Chrysler LeBaron coupe. In 1996 the convertible was introduced, replacing its LeBaron counterpart as well. For 2001, both body styles were redesigned and a sedan version was offered, replacing the Chrysler Cirrus. The coupe was discontinued after 2005 with no replacement model planned.

The redesigned sedan was introduced for 2007, and a convertible the following year. New options included all-wheel drive on sedans and an available retractable metal top for the convertible. All Sebring models were replaced by the Chrysler 200 for the 2011 model year.

Common Chrysler Sebring problems

Based on the complaints from owners of Chrysler Sebring cars, several common problems have been identified:

  1. Oil Sludge Resulting in Engine Failure:
    • The Chrysler Sebring, particularly the 2001 and 2002 models, faced chronic issues with oil leaks from the 2.7-liter engine, leading to engine sludge buildup and eventual failure.
    • This problem often went unnoticed until it caused severe engine damage, necessitating costly repairs or even engine replacement.
    • Owners reported average repair costs ranging from $3,000 to $6,000, with some needing multiple engine replacements due to recurring issues.
    • Chrysler's lack of a recall or proactive response to this known problem added to owners' frustrations.
  2. Transmission Issues:
    • Transmission problems are another common complaint among Chrysler Sebring owners, leading to issues like stalling, difficulty starting, or erratic shifting.
    • These transmission issues can result in significant repair costs and affect the overall drivability of the vehicle.
  3. Failed Head Gaskets:
    • Head gasket failures have been reported by owners, causing coolant leaks, overheating, and potential engine damage if not addressed promptly.
    • Repairing or replacing a head gasket can be a costly and labor-intensive process, impacting the vehicle's reliability and performance.
  4. Electrical Problems:
    • Owners have experienced various electrical issues, including problems with the instrument cluster, dash lights, power locks, power windows, and the radio.
    • These electrical malfunctions can lead to inconvenience, safety concerns, and additional expenses for repairs or replacements.
  5. Suspension and Steering Components Wear:
    • Components of the suspension system, such as ball joints, silent blocks, shock absorber support cups, and CV joints, are prone to wear and may require replacement at regular intervals.
    • Steering rack issues may also arise after significant mileage, impacting the vehicle's handling and safety.
  6. Air Conditioning and Heating Problems:
    • Many owners have reported issues with the air conditioning and heating systems, including problems with the blower fan, loud noises, water pooling, and compressor failures.
    • Addressing these HVAC issues can be necessary for comfort and climate control within the vehicle.
  7. Occupant Restraint Control Module Failure:
    • The occupant restraint control module, responsible for airbag and seat belt pre-tensioner functions, can fail due to moisture intrusion or electronic component issues.
    • Failure of this module can lead to airbag system malfunctions, potentially compromising occupant safety in the event of a collision.

These common problems with Chrysler Sebring cars highlight the importance of thorough inspection, regular maintenance, and awareness of potential issues to ensure the longevity and reliability of the vehicle.

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-08-01
  • Date Complaint: 2024-05-16
  • VIN: 1C3LC56K68N
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: Engine frequently stalls while driving. I've had my car shut off while I'm driving many times, the steering wheel and brakes lock up and it makes it hard to get off the street to safety. This happens a LOT. It is very dangerous and scary. I get anxiety everytime I drive because I'm scared of it happening again. My car once turned off in the middle of a busy intersection while trying to turn. It came on after about 45 seconds but it was terrifying. Battery often dies (just replaced it). Horn would go off randomly without stopping for a long time. I had to disconnect the horn (on both sides) because it would keep randomly going off with no way to stop it. Cruise control stopped working one day. Sometimes it comes up when I press cruise control but it turns off when I try setting a speed. Drivers window broke inside, I think something snapped inside the door. I've had it replaced 3 times but it keeps breaking. A/C makes an awful grinding noise sometimes, but it goes away if I turn the A/C off then back on. Also with the A/C, a door or something inside the dash will get stuck every so often and it makes a LOUD clicking like noise but it goes away after about 20 seconds (something to do with the actuator?). Brake light will come on sometimes when I stop. It goes away shortly after I start driving again. ABS light has been on my dash for a few months now. Most of these issues have been happening for over a year now. Most of this shows up under a recall from 2008, ELECTRICAL SYSTEM: WIRING. It doesn't show up under my VIN number but I'm having the same exact problems.

  • Summary: I was driving my car and fault something wrong with the steering and went to make a right turn I heard a noise and my car front passenger side of my car was on the ground and my wheel was under my car. Thank goodness for no one else being involved that day and thank God I wasn't hurt badly... I have never seen or have anything like that to happen to me... I'm glad my children wasn't with me... I'm glad I wasn't traveling down the road when that happened.....

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-01-02
  • Date Complaint: 2024-01-06
  • VIN: 1C3LC46K48N
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING,ENGINE
  • Summary: I was on my way to work. All the warning light appeared on my dash. Then all the warning light, radio, speedometer gage and all head light and tail lights went out. I was driving in the dark. My engine bogged down no power. I was barley moving. I replaced the battery no difference. I replaced the alternator worked for 3 minutes and then the car was back to the same as before. I contacted a nearby mechanic facility they told me that it was most definitely the fuse panel under the hood. That's its not a recall but a lawsuit replacement. I notified the manufacturer and they told me my Vin number was not under recall. I'm confused on what to do not. I'm in no way able to purchase a new vehicle at this time. Nor spend hundreds or thousands in repairs. Please help.

Latest negative Chrysler Sebring car reviews

  1. Kenneth Marquardt 2025-05-05

    Vehicle year: 1996

This car was a great first car. However, I did experience some issues with it when it reached around 75,000 miles. The air-conditioner was a real problem and even though I had it fixed once, it broke again a year later. The compressor broke in two, which seems to be a fundamental design problem. Additionally, this car can be quite expensive to fix. If you like the looks of this car, I would suggest getting a newer one and trading it in before it reaches 75,000 miles. Lastly, if you are on the taller side, you may find the seat a little uncomfortable on long trips as it tends to round your shoulders forward. However, on short trips, it should be fine.

  2. Rene Bashirian 2025-04-29

    Vehicle year: 2004

It's unfortunate to hear about your experience with the car. It seems that there is a known issue with the oil valve system causing the engine to run out of oil without warning, which can lead to engine failure. While researching, I found that this issue has affected many car owners. It's disappointing to hear that Chrysler did not stand by their product and cover the cost of the repair, which ended up being $8,000. I hope that you are able to find a solution to this problem soon.

The car experienced several issues with reliability, including problems with two top motors, the rear window defogger coming off seven times, and the steering column locking, which required towing. The transmission also began shifting erratically, and after the dealer replaced the mounts, the transmission failed completely a few days later. Although a new torque converter was installed, there was no credit for the mounts, and two weeks later, the transmission began to slip. It is worth noting that the car had 70K miles on it at this point. Despite these challenges, it is important to mention that the owner, who is 56 years old, takes great care of their cars.

In June of 2000, I purchased a Sebring with 22,000 miles and was thrilled to drive off with the wind in my hair. However, I soon encountered a problem with the back passenger floorboard flooding after heavy rains, which caused a short circuit in the interior electronics. Unfortunately, the dealer informed me that it was not covered under warranty and would be very expensive to repair. As a result, I lost my radio, interior lights, keyless entry, and other features. The interior also began to mold, which was frustrating and unpleasant. Despite my efforts to dry it out with bathroom towels, the situation did not improve. I have since acquired a company car and my Sebring remains in a state of disrepair until I can pay it off and sell it. Overall, this has been a disappointing purchase and I would advise caution to anyone considering buying a Sebring.

I bought this car because I liked the looks, but unfortunately, I didn't do my research ahead of time. This car has some very strange 'quirks' that the mechanics have no explanation for. The transmission shifts very hard sometimes and sometimes the car sputters and almost dies as it's shifting between 1st and 2nd (automatic transmission). I could deal with this problem, but for about a year now sometimes the car will just not start. It makes me a nervous wreck! We'll be trading this one in very soon!

Congratulations on your new car! It's been 3 weeks since you got it and you've already taken it on a family reunion trip. The gas mileage was great and you got it at a great price. However, you've been experiencing some issues with the uconnect call system and the car shaking when you slow down. It's unfortunate that you're also having trouble with the gear being stuck in Park. It seems like a part needs to be replaced, which costs $200. I hope everything gets resolved soon and you can enjoy your new car to the fullest!

I've had this car for almost 2 years and driven it for 50,000 miles without a single problem. The ride is smooth, with a very American-style feel, and the 3.5 liter engine provides good power. I'm getting an impressive 33 mpg combined. The top goes up and down in just 30 seconds, and it's always a smooth ride. While the interior plastic may be a bit cheap, the seats are excellent. I've driven this car from Miami to D.C and back, a 15-hour journey each way, and I experienced no back pain. It's a cruiser! With the hard-top up, it's dead quiet. Even during rain or a car wash, there's no leakage. In fact, you can even drive in the rain with the top down, as long as you stay above 40 mph. The rain flies over you and you stay dry. People may look at you like you're a bit crazy, but it's truly a fun Florida car. However, it's important to note that it's not a sports car.

Congratulations on owning your Sebring for a month now! I'm glad to hear that you're enjoying the ride quality of your car. It sounds like the handling and performance are top-notch, which is great to hear. It's also fantastic that you've been able to make some modifications to your car to make it even more fun to drive and economical to own. I'm sure the stainless steel snap on covers and black painted grill look amazing! It's always fun to add a bit of personal flair to your car. Overall, it sounds like the Sebring is a great car to own, and I'm happy to hear that you're enjoying it. Thank you for sharing your experience with us!

We recently purchased the 09 Sebring Sedan, Limited, which comes with all the available options. Contrary to Edmund's review, we found this car to be beautiful both inside and out. The seats are made of soft leather and we couldn't find anything that looks cheap or of poor quality. We have received several compliments on the style and accessories. Before making this purchase, we test drove six other cars, but the Sebring was by far the most fun and best looking. It reminds me of a grown-up Crossfire. The sound system is fantastic and the GPS, radio, CD, and telephone are all operated from a touch screen, which is easy to learn. The V6 is responsive and fast enough, although the gas mileage isn't as good as the Ford Focus. Overall, we are pleased with the car and its performance, and we highly recommend it.
