Chrysler Sebring problems

The Chrysler Sebring (/ˈsiːbrɪŋ/ SEE-bring) is a line of mid-size automobiles that was sold from 1995 through 2010 by Chrysler. Three generations of convertibles, two generations of sedans, and two generations of coupes were produced. Although the coupe shared the same name and some styling cues, it was mechanically unrelated to the other Sebring models.
The Sebring line was introduced in 1995 with the Chrysler Sebring coupe. It was the replacement for the Chrysler LeBaron coupe. In 1996 the convertible was introduced, replacing its LeBaron counterpart as well. For 2001, both body styles were redesigned and a sedan version was offered, replacing the Chrysler Cirrus. The coupe was discontinued after 2005 with no replacement model planned.
The redesigned sedan was introduced for 2007, and a convertible the following year. New options included all-wheel drive on sedans and an available retractable metal top for the convertible. All Sebring models were replaced by the Chrysler 200 for the 2011 model year.

Common Chrysler Sebring problems
Based on the complaints from owners of Chrysler Sebring cars, several common problems have been identified:
- Oil Sludge Resulting in Engine Failure:
- The Chrysler Sebring, particularly the 2001 and 2002 models, faced chronic issues with oil leaks from the 2.7-liter engine, leading to engine sludge buildup and eventual failure.
- This problem often went unnoticed until it caused severe engine damage, necessitating costly repairs or even engine replacement.
- Owners reported average repair costs ranging from $3,000 to $6,000, with some needing multiple engine replacements due to recurring issues.
- Chrysler's lack of a recall or proactive response to this known problem added to owners' frustrations.
- Transmission Issues:
- Transmission problems are another common complaint among Chrysler Sebring owners, leading to issues like stalling, difficulty starting, or erratic shifting.
- These transmission issues can result in significant repair costs and affect the overall drivability of the vehicle.
- Failed Head Gaskets:
- Head gasket failures have been reported by owners, causing coolant leaks, overheating, and potential engine damage if not addressed promptly.
- Repairing or replacing a head gasket can be a costly and labor-intensive process, impacting the vehicle's reliability and performance.
- Electrical Problems:
- Owners have experienced various electrical issues, including problems with the instrument cluster, dash lights, power locks, power windows, and the radio.
- These electrical malfunctions can lead to inconvenience, safety concerns, and additional expenses for repairs or replacements.
- Suspension and Steering Components Wear:
- Components of the suspension system, such as ball joints, silent blocks, shock absorber support cups, and CV joints, are prone to wear and may require replacement at regular intervals.
- Steering rack issues may also arise after significant mileage, impacting the vehicle's handling and safety.
- Air Conditioning and Heating Problems:
- Many owners have reported issues with the air conditioning and heating systems, including problems with the blower fan, loud noises, water pooling, and compressor failures.
- Addressing these HVAC issues can be necessary for comfort and climate control within the vehicle.
- Occupant Restraint Control Module Failure:
- The occupant restraint control module, responsible for airbag and seat belt pre-tensioner functions, can fail due to moisture intrusion or electronic component issues.
- Failure of this module can lead to airbag system malfunctions, potentially compromising occupant safety in the event of a collision.
These common problems with Chrysler Sebring cars highlight the importance of thorough inspection, regular maintenance, and awareness of potential issues to ensure the longevity and reliability of the vehicle.

Chrysler Sebring 2008
- Date Of Incident: 2022-08-01
- Date Complaint: 2024-05-16
- VIN: 1C3LC56K68N
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
- Summary: Engine frequently stalls while driving. I've had my car shut off while I'm driving many times, the steering wheel and brakes lock up and it makes it hard to get off the street to safety. This happens a LOT. It is very dangerous and scary. I get anxiety everytime I drive because I'm scared of it happening again. My car once turned off in the middle of a busy intersection while trying to turn. It came on after about 45 seconds but it was terrifying. Battery often dies (just replaced it). Horn would go off randomly without stopping for a long time. I had to disconnect the horn (on both sides) because it would keep randomly going off with no way to stop it. Cruise control stopped working one day. Sometimes it comes up when I press cruise control but it turns off when I try setting a speed. Drivers window broke inside, I think something snapped inside the door. I've had it replaced 3 times but it keeps breaking. A/C makes an awful grinding noise sometimes, but it goes away if I turn the A/C off then back on. Also with the A/C, a door or something inside the dash will get stuck every so often and it makes a LOUD clicking like noise but it goes away after about 20 seconds (something to do with the actuator?). Brake light will come on sometimes when I stop. It goes away shortly after I start driving again. ABS light has been on my dash for a few months now. Most of these issues have been happening for over a year now. Most of this shows up under a recall from 2008, ELECTRICAL SYSTEM: WIRING. It doesn't show up under my VIN number but I'm having the same exact problems.

Thank goodness for no one else being involved that day and thank God I wasn't hurt badly... I have never seen or have anything like that to happen to me... I'm glad my children wasn't with me... I'm glad I wasn't traveling down the road when that happened.....
Chrysler Sebring 2008
- Date Of Incident: 2024-01-02
- Date Complaint: 2024-01-06
- VIN: 1C3LC46K48N
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING,ENGINE
- Summary: I was on my way to work. All the warning light appeared on my dash. Then all the warning light, radio, speedometer gage and all head light and tail lights went out. I was driving in the dark. My engine bogged down no power. I was barley moving. I replaced the battery no difference. I replaced the alternator worked for 3 minutes and then the car was back to the same as before. I contacted a nearby mechanic facility they told me that it was most definitely the fuse panel under the hood. That's its not a recall but a lawsuit replacement. I notified the manufacturer and they told me my Vin number was not under recall. I'm confused on what to do not. I'm in no way able to purchase a new vehicle at this time. Nor spend hundreds or thousands in repairs. Please help.

Hi there! I wanted to share my experience with this amazing car model that I found at a really great price. I even added a full warranty that covered the repair of a leaky evaporator, which was fixed for free! Although the previous owner didn't take the best care of the car, it was still in great mechanical shape, except for some issues with the A/C and transmission shifting. Luckily, with less than 70,000 miles on it, I took it to the dealer and they were able to fix it with a simple computer upgrade. I also use Prolong in the engine, which helps me get around 26 mpg on the freeway at 65 mph. I'm really happy with the performance of this 200 hp V6 engine, which is even bigger than my 95 Dodge Stratus and gets better mileage. Overall, I'm really satisfied with my purchase and would highly recommend this car to anyone looking for a reliable and efficient vehicle.

Vehicle year: 2001
This is such a great car! You must have made a great choice when you bought it new in March of 2001 with only 2 miles on it. It's so impressive that you've never had any major mechanical problems with it. Not only is it comfortable and stylish, but it's also perfect for a family car. The 200 hp performs so well in a heavy convertible, and you can even get >30 highway mileage! Although city mileage suffers some, it's still >20 even on the bad days. I can see why you chose this car, especially since the 2001 model was the first year to offer the 2.7l V6 and better styling than the previous Sebrings.

It's great to switch back to a sedan after driving a van for 7 years. We absolutely love the sporty look and the higher front seat compared to most sedans. Despite being a small sedan, it provides ample space for the driver and passenger. I'm really happy with the car's overall performance. It doesn't feel like the typical 4-cylinder engines I'm used to.

Yes, I've only had my car for a month, but I absolutely love driving it. While there have been a few tiny problems with the car, such as a creaking driver door and whistling vents, I still think it's a fantastic car overall. In fact, short of a 300M, I've never driven such a gorgeous car!

The Chrysler Sebring is a wonderful car. I would recommend this make and model to anyone. It is a very amazing vehicle.
Merritt Buckridge 2025-09-12
Vehicle year: 1999
I bought this car used back in 08 and loved it! It worked fine until about '09 when the A/C and Heat only worked on high, which was a pain in the winter. Although I have had to replace the Tyrods twice, motor mounts twice, and now the struts need to be replaced as well, I have enjoyed driving it. There have been a few engine leaks and electrical problems, but my mechanic has been able to fix them. The car does leak a bit, and the mpg was great up until about last year. However, it has been a bit of a money pit the past few years, and I am considering getting rid of it. As much as I love the convertible style, it's simply not worth it anymore. It spends more time in the shop than on the road, and even my mechanic is getting weary of working on it. I will miss it, but I am excited to find a new car that will better suit my needs!

I wrote a review a year ago and I'm happy to report that with an additional 15000 miles, I still haven't encountered any problems. I just washed and waxed my vehicle with white paint and it still gleams like new, especially now that the sun is out and I dropped the top with no issues. I paid $12000 for the Touring model back in February 2009 and it's still worth about the same price, if not more. I have no regrets and this may turn out to be one of my better automobile purchases, even if it does suffer some future breakdown. For now, everything is good!

I bought this car from a used car dealership. It looks great and drives well. Although the suspension is sub-par and I have had problems with the shocks/struts and ball joints, the engine runs terrific and gets great gas mileage.

Vehicle year: 2004
In 2005, I purchased a 2004 Sebring with only 22k miles on it. Since then, I have taken great care of it, performing regular maintenance such as coolant flushes, oil changes, and replacing the battery every 3 years. Despite my efforts, the car has had its fair share of issues over the years, including a stripped oil pan, brake replacement, and various leaks. However, I still love the car despite the challenges it has presented. Currently, it is in the shop due to a minor oil leak and issues with the AC after a new compressor was installed. While it has been a bit of a money pit, I am still grateful for the time I have spent with it. Such is the love-hate relationship I have with my Sebring!

Vehicle year: 1998
I have owned this car since new and while it has been mechanically reliable, I have experienced some issues such as rattles in the glovebox and sunroof, as well as exterior cladding falling off. Additionally, I have found the car to be too low in front and have had difficulty with the turning radius. The ride is stiff, but still enjoyable. While the cab forward design is interesting for looks, it is not very practical. Although the newer models do not look as good and the redesign is not promising, I still find the car decently good looking. If you plan on adding a lot of aftermarket styling and equipment, it could be a good option at a cheaper price. However, I would not recommend this car used otherwise. Overall, it has been an okay car.
