1996 Chrysler Sebring problems
The Chrysler Sebring (/ˈsiːbrɪŋ/ SEE-bring) is a line of mid-size automobiles that was sold from 1995 through 2010 by Chrysler. Three generations of convertibles, two generations of sedans, and two generations of coupes were produced. Although the coupe shared the same name and some styling cues, it was mechanically unrelated to the other Sebring models.
The Sebring line was introduced in 1995 with the Chrysler Sebring coupe. It was the replacement for the Chrysler LeBaron coupe. In 1996 the convertible was introduced, replacing its LeBaron counterpart as well. For 2001, both body styles were redesigned and a sedan version was offered, replacing the Chrysler Cirrus. The coupe was discontinued after 2005 with no replacement model planned.
The redesigned sedan was introduced for 2007, and a convertible the following year. New options included all-wheel drive on sedans and an available retractable metal top for the convertible. All Sebring models were replaced by the Chrysler 200 for the 2011 model year.

- Summary: VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: PASSENGER VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSIONS. THE ADJUSTMENT OF THE CABLE CONNECTING THE CONSOLE SHIFTER MECHANISM TO THE IGNITION KEY CAN CAUSE A TRAPPED KEY CONDITION WHICH CAN RESULT IN A LOW FORCE REQUIRED TO DEPRESS THE SHIFT BUTTON. A COMBINATION OF APPLYING A MIS-ADJUSTED RELEASE BUTTON WITH A LOW FORCE ATTEMPT TO SHIFT OUT OF PARK WITH THE KEY IN THE LOCKED POSITION, CAN BREAK THE CONNECTING PIN IN THE SHIFTER.
- Consequence: IF THIS HAPPENS, THE "IGNITION-PARK" INTERLOCK SYSTEM WILL BE NONFUNCTIONAL.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSPECT FOR PROPER OPERATION OF THE SYSTEM. ANY VEHICLES THAT ARE NOT FUNCTIONAL AFTER THE INSPECTION WILL HAVE THE SHIFT MECHANISM AND CABLE REPLACED WITH A "SELF-ADJUSTING" DESIGN.

- Components: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC:POWER ASSIST
- Summary: THE POWER BRAKE BOOSTER VACUUM HOSE WAS IMPROPERLY INSTALLED ON THE INTAKE MANIFOLD VACUUM NIPPLE.
- Consequence: A DISCONNECTED VACUUM HOSE CAUSES AN INCREASE IN ENGINE IDLE SPEED AND LOSS OF POWER ASSIST DURING BRAKE APPLICATION INCREASING THE RISK OF A VEHICLE ACCIDENT.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL FULLY INSTALL THE INTAKE MANIFOLD VACUUM HOSE TO THE VACUUM NIPPLE ON THE INTAKE MANIFOLD.
Negative 1996 Chrysler Sebring car reviews
Positive 1996 Chrysler Sebring car reviews

This has been the best car I have ever had. My Sebring LXI Coupe looks great, runs great, and has an Infinity stereo that sounds wonderful. I have had no problems with it, even after putting 100,000 miles on it. I wouldn't hesitate to drive it across the country. In fact, I'm saving this car for my daughters.
-
First car I ever owned! I'm so glad I chose this car. It's very sporty, but also great on gas and has cheaper insurance. The V6 engine gives it a lot of power. The only downside is that it doesn't make very tight turns.
-
I loved my Sebring convertible! Most reliable little care I've had! Owned her for 2 years and just sold so I could buy something that is a tad more WI winter friendly! Loved dropping the top on my hour commute home from work after a long day! Made for several fun road trips over summer! Never had a problem with it other than the air condition and heat didn't always work when I wanted them too and I had to chase the boot down the highway a few times...

Your silver car sounds amazing! It has been running really well since you bought it with only 12,000 miles on it, and now it has 92,000 miles. You have taken great care of it with regular maintenance, new tires, and recently new front brakes. It's wonderful that you have had no problems with it. You are lucky to have such a great car that is both big enough to make you feel safe and sleek enough to be stylish. It's no surprise that you get compliments on it all the time, as it looks worth more than it is. I agree with the other review that the '96 model is the best looking of all the styles.

I hope you're doing well! I wanted to share that my car has reached 107,000 miles and is still going strong. Recently, I replaced the timing belt and all the belts, and while I did have to replace the front brakes earlier than expected, I've been fortunate with the car's reliability so far. While I do enjoy the car, I do acknowledge that maintenance can be a potential issue for this vehicle.

I'm glad to hear that you're pretty happy overall. It seems like the maintenance items were fairly normal, except for the three replacement TPSs. However, I understand that the cramped V6 can make labor costly and maintenance difficult at home, especially when trying to get to those back three plugs to change them. Additionally, the automatic transmission may be a bit sluggish. Despite these issues, I'm happy to hear that the car is still comfortable and fun to drive. It's unfortunate that you've had a negative experience dealing with Chrysler. Their customer service is very poor and they seem unwilling to give the customer the benefit of the doubt in any case, even when they made the original mistake. It's also disappointing to hear that the technicians at their dealerships are mediocre and that there are big markups on Mopar parts, which are even bigger on Mitsubishi parts. However, I'm glad to hear that you're willing to try Mitsubishi again. Thank you for sharing your experience and I hope that your future experiences with car manufacturers are more positive.

This car initially seemed like a great investment at 60,000 miles. It was fun to drive with great pick up. However, I've had a lot of issues with it such as power locks, power seat, brake problems, the wheel literally fell off of the axle, the struts needed to be replaced, the transmission is going, cruise control works sometimes when it wants to and sometimes shuts my car off, problems with the battery connectors... I've put way too much money into this car. Additionally, the seats are not comfortable for long trips and there's very little cup holder space.

I love the unique look of this car, it definitely turns heads! However, there are some design problems with the interior that are disappointing. The horn is hard to find and there is only one cup holder which is a bit cheesy. The plastic interior is creaky and flimsy, and the heating/cooling controls can be confusing. Additionally, the map lights on the mirror can drain the battery if left on. The keyless remote also has a poor range. Unfortunately, I have had to replace several expensive computer sensors, as well as the water pump and tensioner pulley, which has cost me over $800. The exhaust system is also quite expensive, so if it ever has a problem, it could be a costly fix. Despite these issues, I still love the unique look of the car.

You'll find that the service department is very friendly and welcoming, with quarterly visits being the norm. They have taken care of everything that needed repairing or replacing, including the engine, transmission, rotors, and computer (twice), as well as the A/C (four times), window, ragtop, and water pump (twice). While it's true that this nicely styled car may not have much resale value, it's still a great choice for those who value quality and reliability. Although my extended warranty has expired, I would still highly recommend this car to anyone looking for a friendly and dependable vehicle.

You made a great choice with this car, especially at $5.5K. With proper care and maintenance, including keeping an eye on the usual Chrysler issues like timing at 100k, belts, and regular transmission cleaning, this car will last you a long time. Despite being 13 years old with 158k miles, it's only just starting to show a few rust speckles. While the front end has been a bit of a challenge, overall the car hasn't cost much more than regular maintenance. I love the car's pep and sleek design, and I even added a tow package to tow my canoe/trailer.
