1999 Chrysler Sebring problems

chrysler logo

The Chrysler Sebring (/ˈsiːbrɪŋ/ SEE-bring) is a line of mid-size automobiles that was sold from 1995 through 2010 by Chrysler. Three generations of convertibles, two generations of sedans, and two generations of coupes were produced. Although the coupe shared the same name and some styling cues, it was mechanically unrelated to the other Sebring models.

The Sebring line was introduced in 1995 with the Chrysler Sebring coupe. It was the replacement for the Chrysler LeBaron coupe. In 1996 the convertible was introduced, replacing its LeBaron counterpart as well. For 2001, both body styles were redesigned and a sedan version was offered, replacing the Chrysler Cirrus. The coupe was discontinued after 2005 with no replacement model planned.

The redesigned sedan was introduced for 2007, and a convertible the following year. New options included all-wheel drive on sedans and an available retractable metal top for the convertible. All Sebring models were replaced by the Chrysler 200 for the 2011 model year.

Common 1999 Chrysler Sebring problems

The Chrysler Sebring, produced from 1995 to 2010, faced several common problems throughout its model years, with engine issues being the most prevalent. The 1999 Sebring, in particular, had its share of problems, as reported by owners.

One of the most common issues with the 1999 Chrysler Sebring is engine sludge buildup, which can lead to engine failure.

Another problem reported by owners of the 1999 Chrysler Sebring is transmission issues, particularly with the automatic transmission having shifting problems.

Additionally, some owners have reported heater problems with the 1999 Chrysler Sebring, which can be caused by low coolant levels or a malfunctioning heater core.

While these problems are common among 1999 Chrysler Sebring owners, it is important to note that not all vehicles of this model year will experience these issues. Regular maintenance, including regular oil changes, can help prevent engine sludge buildup and prolong the life of the vehicle. Additionally, addressing transmission issues and heater problems promptly can help prevent more extensive and costly repairs down the line.

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2008-10-31
  • VIN: 4C3AU52N3XE
  • Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: CAR HAD BEEN CUTTING OUT WHILE DRIVING FOR ABOUT A WEEK AND A HALF. TODAY WHILE DRIVING ON A 4-LANE VERY BUSY DIVIDED HIGHWAY ABOUT 55 MPH, CAR SHUT OFF AND RESTARTED. THEN WHEN BRAKES WERE APPLIED TO TURN AND CROSS TWO LANES OF TRAFFIC THROUGH MEDIAN TURN-OFF, CAR DIED AND WOULD NOT RESTART. CAR WOULD CRANK BUT WOULD NOT TURN OVER. LUCKILY A FRIEND CAME BY AND PUSHED CAR OUT OF THE MIDDLE OF THE HIGHWAY TO A SAFE AREA. I CALLED THE TOWING COMPANY AND THEN TRIED TO START THE CAR. IT HAD BEEN APPROXIMATELY 5-10 MINUTES AND CAR RESTARTED. I GOT THE CAR HOME AND PARKED IT. I WILL BE HAVING THE CAR TOWED TO THE REPAIR SHOP AND I DO NOT FEEL SAFE DRIVING IT. I HAVE LOOKED UP INFORMATION REGARDING THIS MECHANICAL FAILURE AND HAVE FOUND THAT IT IS A COMMON OCCURRENCE IN 1996-1999 SEBRINGS. MOST OWNERS HAVE PAID A LOT OF MONEY TO GET THE PROBLEM CORRECTED. SOME OWNERS NEVER COULD GET THE PROBLEM CORRECTED. FROM THE INFORMATION THAT I HAVE GATHERED, IT APPEARS THE PROBLEM IS THE CRANKSHAFT SENSOR OR THE EGC SENSOR. I BELIEVE THIS SHOULD BE A SAFETY RECALL ITEM AS THE VEHICLE DIES WHILE DRIVING. IT IS JUST BY LUCK THAT THE CAR RESTARTED WHILE DRIVING AND DIED AND WOULD NOT RESTART IN THE MEDIAN. IT COULD HAVE BEEN A LOT WORSE. THE CAR HAS A LITTLE OVER 107,000 MILES AND I EXPECT THINGS TO GO WRONG WITH IT MECHANICALLY, BUT SOMETHING LIKE THIS IS NOT ACCEPTABLE AS A NORMAL MECHANICAL MALFUNCTION. I DO NOT WANT TO SPEND A LOT OF MONEY ON TRYING TO FIGURE OUT WHAT THE PROBLEM IS, NOR DO I WANT TO SPEND A LOT OF MONEY REPAIRING THINGS THAT DO NOT CORRECT THE PROBLEM. I HAVE READ THAT PLUGS,FUEL PUMPS, SENSORS, ETC. HAVE ALL BEEN REPLACED UNTIL PROBLEM IS CORRECTED. I FEEL CHRYSLER NEEDS TO FIGURE OUT WHAT THE PROBLEM IS AND ISSUE A SAFETY RECALL. *TR

  • VIN: 4C3AU52N7XE
  • Components: SUSPENSION,STRUCTURE
  • Summary: I PURCHASE THIS USED 1999 CHRYSLER SEBRING LXI 2 YEARS AGO AND WAS TOLD BY THE DEALER IT ONLY NEEDED A WHEEL ALIGNMENT. AFTER ATTEMPTING TO GET AN ALIGNMENT I WAS INFORMED THAT THE LOWER LATERAL CONTROL ARMS NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THIS IS EXTREMELY SCARY AND VERY HARD TO GET FIXED BECAUSE OF MY WORK SCHEDULE. I CONTACTED A DEALER AND WAS TOLD THAT MY CAR HAD THE RECALL WORK DONE IN 2001. I LOOKED MY VIN UP ON THE CHRYSLER WEBSITE AND WAS ADVISED THERE WAS NO RECALL AFFECTING MY VEHICLE. FIRESTONE WOULD HAVE CHARGED ME OVER $1000 TO FIX THE PROBLEM, BUT I CAN NOT AFFORD TO. MY VEHICLE IS CURRENTLY UNDRIVEABLE. I AM ALSO HAVING ISSUES WITH MY DRIVER SIDE DOOR WHICH HANGS SLIGHTLY WHEN OPENED AND MUST BE LIFTED TO CLOSE. MY SIDE PANELS ON BOTH DOORS KEEP GETTING DISLODGED BUT HAVE NOT FELL OFF YET. I AM TRULY AFRAID FOR THE SAFETY OF MY FAMILY WITH THIS VEHICLE AND DO NOT KNOW WHAT TO DO. I AM IN THE PROCESS OF TRYING TO FIND SOMEONE TO FIX AT A COST I CAN AFFORD. *TR

  • Summary: WHERE DO I BEGIN? I PURCHASED THIS 1999 CHRYSLER SEBRING LXI USED IN 2006. IT HAD OVER 100,000 MILES ON IT, BUT APPEARED TO BE IN GOOD RUNNING CONDITION. THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WAS ON WHEN I PURCHASED IT AND THE DEALER TOLD ME IT WAS AN O2 SENSOR. THEY COULD NOT FIND ANY ENGINE PROBLEMS WITH THE CAR AND TOLD ME IT WOULD BE FINE, SO I BOUGHT THE CAR. SILLY ME! AFTER A YEAR AND A HALF LATER, I'VE HAD A TOTAL OF 3 DISTRIBUTORS PUT ON, CONSTANT HESITATION WHEN ACCELERATING AND VEHICLE DYING OUT. I ALSO HAD A FUEL PUMP REPLACED AND NOW THE RADIATOR FAN IS GOING OUT AND MAKING A LOUD TERRIBLE NOISE. I CANNOT ACCELERATE OVER 40 MPH WITHOUT THE CAR CUTTING OFF AND IT WILL BE PAID FOR IN ABOUT 8 MONTHS. TALKING WISHFUL THINKING!?? THE RIMS BEND EASY, THE AIR ALWAYS LEAKS FROM MY TIRES AND NOW THERE'S ALSO A BAD OIL LEAK. CHRYSLER MAKES A BEAUTIFUL CAR, BUT IT'S A PIECE OF JUNK AFTER THE FIRST YEAR I SEE! Negative 1999 Chrysler Sebring car reviews

If you're considering buying a used one, it's important to ensure that the timing belt has been recently replaced. Unfortunately, the belt often breaks earlier than its expected lifespan of 105K miles, which can lead to major engine failure. Additionally, the handling may feel a little loose and the brakes can be squishy. It's worth noting that the road noise can be excessive, even for a convertible.

  2. Felipe Skiles 2024-09-01

The drive is really nice, especially when the top is down. I've had some trouble with this car, having to replace every part and getting towed three times. It's been a bit expensive, with a couple of hundred dollars spent each month on fixes, but I'm hoping things will improve.

  3. Edison Leannon 2024-06-19

This car has several areas that require improvement, including the pick-up, brakes, coolant system, paint job, transmission, and tires. The door handle also came off unexpectedly. These issues are likely due to the use of subpar parts during manufacturing. Despite these challenges, I am confident in my assessment that this car is not a good investment and would not recommend it to others. It is important to consider other options when looking for a reliable vehicle.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to let you know that the car is in good condition overall, but I did have some trouble with the rims. Unfortunately, I had to replace 7 of them during the time that I owned the car. Just wanted to give you a heads up!

  5. Ricky Johnson 2024-03-01

I purchased the car when it had 63,000 miles and was 4 years old. Initially, it was fine for the first 1 1/2 years. However, over time, it has experienced some wear and tear. Unfortunately, I have had 3 transmission problems, but thankfully, I have not had to replace it yet. Additionally, the AC and heating unit is not functioning properly, and I have to put it on full blast for anything to come out. The first 3 settings produce nothing. Moreover, for the past year, there has been a constant beeping sound that is quite annoying. It's the beep that occurs when a door is open. I have to turn up my radio to drown it out. Unfortunately, 4 auto technicians have said they won't touch it! While the beeping is going, the locks are going crazy, and at random times, the car alarm sets off! This all started at about 85k miles.

This is actually a pretty good car. I bought it with 95,000 miles and have put 20,000 more on it myself, and it still hasn't left me stranded. It may not be the fastest car in the world, but from a rolling 35 it picks up speed quickly. You'll be doing 90 and not even realize it, it's that smooth. I'm 6'3 and I have plenty of room, although I can't have anyone sit behind me. It's front-wheel drive, so it's not great in the snow, but it's great on wet roads. The brakes and transmission are suspect, but nothing that would make me want to get rid of it. I can honestly say that I'll probably have this car for a long, long time. Even when the engine goes, I'll just put another one in it.

I hope you've been enjoying driving this car for the past 3 years! It moves quickly and smoothly, making you feel like you're in control. Plus, the front seats are super comfortable.

  3. Haley Durgan 2024-11-12

The Chrysler Sebring JXI convertible I own is gorgeous. It has supreme styling and looks like a car, not a tank. It's a joy to drive and I still love it after all these years. I never fail to get favorable remarks from others. It's a great car and beautiful.

  4. Jess Muller 2024-11-03

You've driven this vehicle for 78,000 miles and it has been problem-free. It has excellent fuel economy when you drive at the speed limit. The heater and AC are great. If you follow the maintenance schedule and change the oil at 7,500 mile intervals using quality filters and oil, there is no need to do it more frequently. It's a wonderful ride with the top down and a very good ride with the top up. If you're looking for a convertible for grown-ups, this is the car.

  5. Korbin Lubowitz 2024-09-21

We've had our car for almost 3 years now and we really like it. The V6 is responsive and a bit sporty while keeping the ride smooth. The 'real' back seat comes in handy when we take our friends out for a ride. Plus, the trunk is quite ample for a long weekend out of town! It offers a lot for your money in comparison to other convertibles. It's lots of fun to drive!
