2002 Chrysler Sebring problems
The Chrysler Sebring (/ˈsiːbrɪŋ/ SEE-bring) is a line of mid-size automobiles that was sold from 1995 through 2010 by Chrysler. Three generations of convertibles, two generations of sedans, and two generations of coupes were produced. Although the coupe shared the same name and some styling cues, it was mechanically unrelated to the other Sebring models.
The Sebring line was introduced in 1995 with the Chrysler Sebring coupe. It was the replacement for the Chrysler LeBaron coupe. In 1996 the convertible was introduced, replacing its LeBaron counterpart as well. For 2001, both body styles were redesigned and a sedan version was offered, replacing the Chrysler Cirrus. The coupe was discontinued after 2005 with no replacement model planned.
The redesigned sedan was introduced for 2007, and a convertible the following year. New options included all-wheel drive on sedans and an available retractable metal top for the convertible. All Sebring models were replaced by the Chrysler 200 for the 2011 model year.

Common 2002 Chrysler Sebring problems
Based on complaints from owners of the Chrysler Sebring 2002, several common problems have been reported:
- Engine Oil Leaks and Sludge Build-Up:
- The 2001 and 2002 Chrysler Sebring models are known for chronic problems with oil leaks from the 2.7-liter engine, leading to engine sludge buildup.
- Continuous exposure of engine oil to high heat causes oxidation and breakdown, resulting in sludge formation that covers the engine, reducing its efficiency and eventually leading to complete engine failure.
- Owners often discovered this issue too late, necessitating costly engine replacements, with repair costs averaging around $4,000 to $4,800.
- Chrysler was criticized for not issuing a recall despite being aware of the problem, leaving many owners with significant repair bills.
- Air Conditioning and Heating System Issues:
- Many Chrysler Sebring owners reported problems with the air conditioner and heater, including issues with the blower fan, loud noises, and water pooling on the floor.
- Complaints ranged from the blower fan only working on high settings to malfunctioning components causing discomfort and inconvenience for drivers.
- Electrical Problems:
- Electrical issues were prevalent in interior systems, with complaints about malfunctioning instrument clusters, dash lights, radios, power locks, and power seats.
- Owners faced frustrations with various electrical components failing, leading to additional repair costs and a lack of reliability in the vehicle's systems.
- Transmission Problems:
- Some owners reported automatic transmission issues, including shifting problems that could affect the vehicle's performance and drivability.
- Transmission issues can be costly to repair and may impact the overall driving experience and safety of the Chrysler Sebring.
These common problems with the Chrysler Sebring 2002 highlight significant concerns related to engine reliability, air conditioning, electrical systems, and transmission performance. Owners faced unexpected repair costs and reliability issues, emphasizing the importance of thorough inspections and maintenance when considering purchasing a used Chrysler Sebring from this model year.

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-01-20
- VIN: 1C3EL46R62N
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: Rear Disc Brakes.I had a repair shop and a dealership assess what they both found to be what's called a Backplate. It mounts onto both Left and Right Spindles. The Backplate on Left and Right hold or guide the Pads in place on both sides of the caliper. The pins show to be almost rusted out.The dealership told me the Left and Right Backplate is unavailable and obsolete. So my options are to find a shop that can fabricate the parts or modify the rear brake system.Truly a poor design.A prototype that slipped through the cracks.I have invested thousands over the years into the vehicle so I would have a problem free efficient ride when I retire.I now had to finance another vehicle because the Chrysler Sebring is no longer driveable. The dealership told me 100.00 to scrap it.Unacceptable! I will continue to pursue my options. I invested alot of blood money into the vehicle and the help I received to date is Park it or Junk it.That is not even a remote consideration.

- Summary: QUALIS AUTOMOTIVE IS RECALLING CERTAIN AFTERMARKET BALL JOINTS SOLD FOR USE ON CERTAIN PASSENGER VEHICLES. THE SOCKET MAY HAVE BEEN EXCESSIVELY HARDENED WHICH COULD CAUSE IT TO CRACK NEAR THE RETAINING RING GROOVE ALLOWING THE BALL STUD TO SEPARATE UNDER IMPACT LOAD. THE SUBJECT BALL JOINTS WERE SOLD AS FOUR PART NUMBERS, D10945, D10946, G10945, AND G10946. THE AFFECTED CONTROL ARMS, D10945 AND D10946, ARE STAMPED WITH THE FOLLOWING DATES ON THE BALL JOINTS: 134308, 135708, 100109, 102709, 104109, 105509, 107609, 108909, 110309, 113209, AND 116609. THE G10945 AND G10946 ARE THE SAME PART AS THE D10945 AND D10946 RESPECTIVELY. THEY ARE LABELED DIFFERENTLY DEPENDING ON THE AFTERMARKET CUSTOMER.
- Consequence: SEPARATION OF THE BALL STUD FROM THE SOCKET OF THE BALL JOINT HOUSING WOULD ALLOW THE CONTROL ARM TO COLLAPSE AND THE WHEEL TO FOLD IN CAUSING LOSS OF STEERING CONTROL, POSSIBLY RESULTING IN A CRASH.
- Remedy: QUALIS AUTOMOTIVE WILL REPLACE THE BALL JOINTS FREE OF CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL BEGAN ON NOVEMBER 9, 2009. OWNERS MAY CONTACT QUALIS AUTOMOTIVE AT 1-800-493-4128.

Both cars were amazing, and now I have this sterling blue metallic 2002 Sebring Limited convertible which is fantastic value for money. I absolutely adore the cream and navy interior. I never thought of myself as a Chrysler enthusiast, but I must say that the fit and finish are superb. It's so much fun to drive, even in the cold with the heat-adjustable seats, great handling and autostick. (mine came with all the toys.) The autostick is really great for getting better mileage, which is about 22-23 city, 28-30 highway, and the autostick is very fun without having to kick the clutch all the time.

Our Sebring Convertible is now 1 year old and we love it! Living in the Chicago area, handling is very important and we're happy to report that it handles great in all weather. Considering it's a rag top, it's also surprisingly quiet. All controls are conveniently located for both the driver and passenger. The V6 engine allows for easy interstate driving. The biggest argument we have over this car is who gets to drive it!

I'm so glad to hear that your Sebring exceeded your expectations! It sounds like a beautiful, stylish, and elegant vehicle that is also fun to drive. The gas mileage is great, and it's great to hear that there's enough room in the back for three people with comfortable leg room. The seatbelts sound extremely comfortable, and it's great that the top comes down smoothly. The sound system sounds powerful, especially when driving on the highway with the top down. It definitely sounds like a car worth giving a 10! Thank you for sharing your experience.

The only downside is related to comfort. The car sits too low and the seats could be more comfortable.

Attractive styling, good handling, and roomy in both the front and back make this car a great choice. While every car has its compromises, this one strikes a good balance between fun and practicality. It's great for cruising and handling twisty roads, and offers good comfort.

This car is certainly fun to drive, but unfortunately, there are some design and build shortcuts that may raise questions about its durability. As someone who drives more than 20K miles a year, I can see potential problems ahead. At 50K, I noticed that the brakes seem like they need to be replaced, the suspension groans and creaks, the body has lots of rattles, and there are small but annoying noises coming from behind the dash. Additionally, the washer fluid freezes in the winter, the car takes a while to warm up, there is no height adjustment on the driver's seat, and I can see wear on the convertible top from rubbing on the frame. While I wish I could say more positive things about it, unfortunately, this unit has been a bit of a disappointment. However, I appreciate the opportunity to share my experience and hope that it can be helpful to others in making their own decisions.

I really like the look of the car and it's so much fun to drive! However, I've had some trouble with it and it's been in for service quite a bit. I've noticed that the quality of the convertible isn't as good as their mini-vans, which is a shame. Unfortunately, I've had a lot of issues with it, such as leaks in the transmission fluid, oil and coolant. I recently took it to the dealership and they found a few things that need fixing, like the trans solenoid pack, oil pan, oil pressure sending switch, and the rack and pinion. Additionally, the door clips are broken and the leather seats are tearing. On the bright side, the windshield washer works great!

Hey there! I did some research on this car and compared it to the Nissan, Toyota, and Mustang. In terms of price and style, it definitely stood out from the rest. It's a really fun car to drive! However, I have had a few issues with it since I've owned it. I've had to take it to the shop for repairs for more than 30 days in total. I've had some problems with the oil light, overheating, and alignment. Changing the battery was also a bit of a nightmare, and I've had to replace the roof motor three times already. The fabric on the roof is also starting to tear. I mostly drive on the highway. In my opinion, it might be best to hold off on buying this car until Chrysler sorts out these issues. While it looks nice, there are some concerns about its reliability.

I purchased my Sebring LX convertible in May '02. Unfortunately, I have had to take it to the dealership nine times in just four months. The car shakes and vibrates so much that it has taken away from the fun of driving a convertible. Despite my frustrations, I am working with Consumer Protection and the Attorney General's Office of Maryland to resolve the issue. I hope to find a satisfactory solution soon. Thank you for your understanding.
