1999 Chrysler Cirrus problems

The Chrysler Cirrus is a mid-sized 4-door notchback sedan introduced by Chrysler motors for the 1995 model year. Built on the Chrysler JA platform, the 4-door notchback sedan joined Chrysler's roster of "Cloud Car" models drawing their names from meteorological terms, including the mid-priced Dodge Stratus it was based on introduced at the same time, and the low-priced Plymouth Breeze variant a year later.

Design

Development of the Cirrus started in 1991, with the goal of creating an affordable, expressive-looking, fun-to-drive vehicle that was still safe enough to transport an everyday family.

The concept car designed for the 1992 auto show circuit featured rear suicide doors and a 400 hp (298 kW; 406 PS) turbocharged 3.0 L two-stroke engine using alcohol fuel. The concept also foreshadowed a hood-line with almost no break with the windshield to improve aerodynamics.

Both the concept and production model used the Chrysler Corporation's new cab-forward design, which was launched on the larger LH sedans in 1992. This three-box design was characterized by a large passenger cabin in proportion to a comparatively short hood and trunk, highlighted by a long, dramatically slanted windshield and short overhangs. Pushing the wheels further to the corners of the body created a much larger cabin than most other similarly sized vehicles of that time.

The a four-door notchback sedan was designed with flowing lines with no distinct beginning or end, but almost resembled a two-box fastback. Design work was done during 1991, with the final version moved on for production by 1992.

Common 1999 Chrysler Cirrus problems

Based on the complaints from owners of the 1999 Chrysler Cirrus, several common problems have been identified:

  • Engine Shutdown While Driving: Another common complaint was the engine shutting down without warning while driving. This issue led to difficulties in restarting the engine immediately, requiring a waiting period ranging from half a minute to several hours. Owners attempted to diagnose and fix this problem by checking fuel delivery, ignition components, and replacing parts like the fuel filter, relays, crankshaft sensor, MAP sensor, and distributor. Despite these efforts, the problem persisted intermittently, causing frustration and uncertainty about the root cause of the malfunction.
  • Various Mechanical and Quality Issues: Owners also reported a range of mechanical and quality issues with the 1999 Chrysler Cirrus. These included squeaks, rattles, droning V6 engine noise, rough-shifting automatic transmission, incomplete chroming on the grille, speedometer cable whine, and a seized compressor in the air conditioning system. While the car offered a high-content-to-price ratio and some attractive features like leather seats, a six-disc CD changer, and a stylish design, these mechanical issues detracted from the overall ownership experience.

These common problems with the 1999 Chrysler Cirrus highlight recurring issues related to fuel system malfunctions, engine shutdowns, and various mechanical and quality concerns. Owners faced challenges in diagnosing and resolving these issues, impacting the reliability and driving experience of the vehicle.

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2009-05-29
  • VIN: 1C3EJ56H1XN
  • Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
  • Summary: THE DISTRIBUTOR HAS GONE OUT TWICE (2X) ON MY 1999 CHRYSLER CIRRUS. THE FIRST TIME WAS IN 2007 WHILE I WAS SITTING IN A CAR WASH. I THOUGHT PERHAPS SOME WATER HAD SPLASHED IN AND SHORTED SOMETHING OUT. SO I DIDN'T REPORT IT. BUT THE SECOND TIME WAS ON FRIDAY, MAY 29TH. WE WERE DRIVING ON THE I-210 FREEWAY IN THE CARPOOL LANE - NEAR AZUSA, CA. SUDDENLY THE CAR LOST ALL POWER AND I HAD TO PULL ACROSS 5 LANES OF TRAFFIC IN ORDER TO SAFELY GET OFF THE FREEWAY. IT WAS VERY SCARY AND VERY DANGEROUS. IF I HAD NOT BEEN ABLE TO PULL OVER, THE CAR WOULD JUST HAVE STOPPED DEAD ON A BUSY FREEWAY ON THE FRIDAY AFTERNOON OF THE MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND. I ASKED THE MECHANIC AT CLIPPINGER CHRYSLER IN COVINA WHERE WE HAD THE CAR TOWED IF THE DISTRIBUTOR WENT OUT OFTEN ON THEIR CARS. HE SAID IT WAS "RARE." I THINK THAT THE FACT THAT IT HAS GONE OUT TWICE ON MY CAR IN THE PAST 2 YEARS IS VERY STRANGE AND COULD CONSTITUTE A SERIOUS DEFECT. *TR

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING,POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2009-02-18
  • VIN: 1C3EJ56H0XN
  • Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING,POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: ABOUT 2 YEARS AGO, MY CAR BEGAN STUTTERING AND STALLING OUT WITH NO WARNING. THE OIL LIGHT REPEATED FLASHES ON, THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT FLASHES AND THEN STAYS ON, AND THE CAR WONT START OR JUST CUTS OFF. THE TRANSMISSION SPEED SENSOR WAS REPLACED. THE TRANSMISSION WAS REPLACED. THE OIL WAS CHANGED. THIS PAST 3 MONTHS ALONE, IT HAS BEEN AT THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT 6 TIMES FOR THIS SAME PROBLEM. I AM NOW BEING TOLD THAT I NEED A TUNE-UP, WHICH WILL COST $700, THEN THE EGR NEEDS REPLACED, AND A FEW OTHER THINGS. HOWEVER, WHEN THE MECHANIC HAD IT LAST WEEK, HE COULD NOT FIND ANYTHING WRONG WITH IT. I HAVE FOUND OUT THAT THE CIRRUS VEHICLES HAVE THIS SAME PROBLEMS THAT I AM HAVING. I WAS ON MY WAY TO THE MALL VIA THE PARKWAY WHEN THE CAR STALLED OUT. LUCKILY TRAFFIC WAS SLOW BECAUSE IF I WAS ON THE PARKWAY AND IT STALLED OUT, MY SISTER AND I COULD HAVE GOTTEN KILLED. THERE IS NO PREDETERMINED TIME WHEN THESE PROBLEMS OCCURRED. THE CAR ONLY HAS 89500 MILES ON IT. I HAVE ALL OF MY ORIGINAL REPAIR PAPERS. PROPER MAINTENANCE HAS ALWAYS BEEN DONE ON MY CAR. WHEN IT WORKS, IT IS GREAT. UNFORTUNATELY, I JUST NEVER KNOW WHEN IT IS GOING TO NOT START. *TR

SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2008-10-15
  • VIN: 1C3EJ56H1XN
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC
  • Summary: I HAVE A 1999 CHRYSLER CIRRUS. MY WIFE TOOK THE CAR FOR THE DAY 10/15/08, SHE CALLED ME AT WORK TO SAY THE BRAKES WERE MAKING A VERY LOUD GRINDING NOISE. THE NEXT DAY I DROVE THE CAR TO THE DEALER TO HAVE THE BRAKES SERVICED. ON THE WAY OVER, THE BRAKE PADS COMPLETELY STOPPED FUNCTIONING. I HAD TO DOWN SHIFT TO STOP. I DROVE AT 10 MPH OR SLOWER THE LAST MILE TO THE DEALER. THEY TOLD ME THE ROTORS NEEDED TO BE REPLACED ALONG WITH THE BRAKES. THIS CAR HAD NO BRAKES. WHAT TROUBLES ME, IS THAT THE BRAKE PADS HAD NO WEAR INDICATORS ON THEM. HAD I HEARD THE SCREECHING OF THE INDICATORS, I WOULD HAVE HAD THE PADS REPLACED SOONER. I HAD NO IDEA THE PADS WAS THAT BAD. A FEW DAYS EARLIER, I WAS IN RHODE ISLAND TO VISIT MY DAUGHTERS. I WAS TRAVELING AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS. THIS COULD HAVE CAUSED A BAD ACCIDENT HAD THE BRAKES FAILED THEN. THE DEALER TOLD ME THAT NOT ALL BRAKE PADS HAVE THESE WEAR INDICATORS. I THINK THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE THAT SHOULD BE ADDRESSED. THE COST OF INCLUDING THESE ON ALL BRAKE PADS COULDN'T BE THAT MUCH. PASS THE COST ON IF THEY HAVE TO. *TR

UPON ARRIVING AT THE GAS STATION THE TANK WAS FILLED. AFTER FILLING WITH GAS, I PROCEEDED TO TRY AFTER START MY CAR AND IT FAILED TO FUNCTION. MY HUSBAND WHO IS A SELF-EMPLOYEED MECHANIC THOUGHT IT TO BE A PROBLEM WITH THE FUEL PUMP. (2)UPON REMOVAL OF THE GAS TANK UNIT AND THE FUEL PUMP ASSEMBLY, WE FOUND THERE TO BE A POSSIBLE HAZARD WITH THE WIRING HARNESS LOCATED INSIDE OF THE GAS TANK UNIT ITSELF. THE WIRES ACTUALLY BEGAN TO MELTS TOGETHER INSTEAD OF DISTURBING THE FUEL PUMP FUSE LOCATED NUETRALLY ON THE FUSE PANEL IN ANOTHER AREA OF THE CAR. WE FEEL THAT IF THE MELTING OF THE WIRES HAD BEEN MORE INTENSE THAT THERE COULD HAVE BEEN AN EXPLOSION DUE TO THE MIXTURE OF HEAT AND COMBUSTABLE GASES/FUMES. THE CENTER TO LEFT OF MY 1999 CHRYSLER 300M WAS CRUSHED AND THE CAR WAS TOTALLED AT OVER 80 PERCENT DAMAGE. I RECEIVED ONLY WHIPLASH AND A BRUISE FROM THE SEATBELT. SO WHERE WERE THE AIRBAGS? CHRYSLER CLAIMED, DURING A PHONE CALL, THAT AIRBAGS ARE SMARTER AND THE COMPUTER SENSES THE EXTENT OF NECESSITY FOR AIRBAG DEPLOYMENT. WHEN THE COLLISION SHOP DECLARED THE AUTO A TOTAL LOSS AT FIRST SIGHT, ALONG WITH THE ALLSTATE APPRAISOR, I HAD TO QUESTION THE VALIDITY OF THE CHYRSLER STATEMENT. CHRYSLER SAYS THAT THE COMPUTER CAN ESTIMATE THE TIME THAT THE CAR GOES FROM (I.E) 60 TO ZERO AND MAKES THE DECISION TO DEPLOY. OTHER CARS IN THE COLLSION LOT HAD SIMILAR DAMAGE AND THEIR AIRBAGS WERE HANGING OUT OF THEIR DASHBOARDS.*AK

Negative 1999 Chrysler Cirrus car reviews

  1. Lucas Waelchi 2024-11-15

The vehicle experiences transmission leaks and sudden stop syndrome, which I have personally encountered on both highways and in the city. These issues are exacerbated during inclement weather conditions. Based on my experience, I do not recommend this vehicle.

I got this car used from my parents, but unfortunately, it has had a lot of problems. The AC and heating have gone out and despite spending over $800, no one has been able to figure out why. The transmission also had to be replaced in 2007. Additionally, the door panels tend to stick when it gets hot outside, making it difficult to open the driver's side door. Currently, the horn goes off whenever I turn the wheel, but I'm working on getting it fixed. Despite these issues, I'm grateful to have a car to get around in. The gas gauge can be a bit unreliable, but I've learned to keep an eye on it.

This is a really nice car! It's built like a tank and the body and paint are in great shape. Although the engine is a bit under-powered and can be difficult to work on, I've managed to do it several times. The transmission can also hesitate to shift when you floor it, but it's not a major issue. The average fuel economy for a V6 is pretty good, and I only have to fill up the 16-gallon tank about once a week. There are some minor dings on the doors from inconsiderate shoppers/neighbors/coworkers and a few tiny rust bubbles on the very tip of the hood from rocks flying up on the highway, but overall it's a great car!

There have been repeated problems with it. However, I am confident that the issue can be resolved. I will take it to a mechanic who can provide a long-term solution.

As a long-time Chrysler customer, I have been disappointed with my latest purchase. Despite bringing several issues to the attention of the dealer, they have yet to be resolved. The driver's seat continues to rock back and forth, and the air and driving noise is almost unbearable. Additionally, the back seat is uncomfortable and caused me to have a backache for a week. While I initially thought my discomfort with the headlights was just a personal preference, Consumer Reports' review confirmed my concerns. The cost of changing the spark plugs was also quite high, and we have yet to find a suitable windshield wiper. As a loyal Chrysler customer, I hope to see improvements in the future.

I worked all summer to get a car and the 99 Chrysler Cirrus was the one I bought. It's been the most reliable car anyone in my family has owned. I get between 25-30 MPG, and I have a slight oil and transmission leak, but it's no big deal right now. The Cirrus has wonderful handling, and it's definitely built for short people.

  2. Haleigh Bayer 2025-01-01

I'm so glad to hear that you got the Cirrus as your first car! It sounds like you're really enjoying it. It's great to hear that it has had very few problems and that you're planning on keeping it for a long time. Thanks for sharing your experience with us!

My 1999 Chrysler Cirrus has 175000 miles on it, but I still love this car! I wish I could have another one with less miles. It was originally bought by my sister, then traded to my mom, and finally given to me. Despite the wear and tear, I intend to keep driving it until it can't go any further. The acceleration is fantastic and the leather seats are so comfortable (even though my 135 lb. dog punctured them with his toenails). When it's time to replace this car, I definitely want another one just like it!

At first, I wasn't too thrilled about getting a four-door car, especially after driving a sporty two-door car like the Pontiac Sunfire. However, once I got behind the wheel and experienced the comfort and quality of the ride, my perception completely changed. The V-6 engine is fantastic, and despite what some people may think, it's not a slow car - it has the same 0-60 time as a 00' Mercury Couger. Plus, my friends absolutely love riding in it, especially with the leather seats!

I've owned an LXI with the 2.5 V6 and drove well over 200000 miles with only routine maintenance. I traded it in for a 2011 200, only due to New England rust issues. Right now, I'm buying another 1999 from down south.
