2017 Chevrolet Colorado problems

chevrolet logo

The Chevrolet Colorado (sharing mechanical commonality with the GMC Canyon), is a series of compact pickup trucks (mid-size since second generation) marketed by American automaker General Motors. They were introduced in 2004 to replace the Chevrolet S-10 and GMC S-15/Sonoma compact pickups. The Colorado is named after the U.S. state of Colorado, while the Canyon would be the deep chasm between cliffs.

First generation (2004)

The Chevrolet Colorado and its twin, the GMC Canyon were jointly designed by GM's North American operations, GM's Brazil operations, and Isuzu, which began selling its own version worldwide in 2002. In late 2005, Isuzu offered a version in North America called the Isuzu i-series. This North American model Isuzu shared North American powertrains, styling, and equipment with the Colorado/Canyon twins and differed from Isuzu's worldwide offering. All Chevrolet, GMC, and Isuzu versions worldwide are based on the GMT355, itself the basis for the GMT 345-based Hummer H3. Most vehicles for markets outside North America are manufactured at a GM plant in Rayong, Thailand. All North American-market vehicles were manufactured by Shreveport Operations.

The cooperation between GM and Isuzu to build a light-duty truck and offer it in North America returns to an original arrangement the two companies had in the 1970s with the Chevrolet LUV, a rebadged Isuzu Faster.

And makes it impossible to defrost/defog your windshield without fixing it...and average cost to replace is 1700.00- 2300.00...due to labor cost...part itself only costs around 100.00....that's an astronomical amount of money to fix something...that is a defect and you can't safely drive without it!

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-07-30
  • VIN: 1GCGSCEAXH1
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: I was driving to lunch and without warning, my brakes failed when I approached a 4-way stop. With ABS, I was able to stop my vehicle safely in a parking lot. However, the when I turned the vehicle off, it would not start again. The vacuum pump seized and since it is driven by the exhaust camshaft, it destroyed the exhaust camshaft. It's been two weeks and I have been unable to acquire that part. I have been notified by GM parts distributors that the part is on a national supply delay with no firm ETA from GM. It seems to be a very common failure. I have been out of a vehicle for over two weeks because of this failure. I also could have been in a terrible accident since the vacuum pump failed without warning. I have checked chevy forums and several others reported the same issue.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-05-05
  • VIN: 1GCGTDEN4H1
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: Fuel leak in line. There is a pin hole in the line spewing fuel under pressure when running. The fuel flows down the side of the tank as I reported in Complaint Number 11587383 on May 7th, 2024. Now I have removed the bed to discover said leak. Adding picture of the leak spewing fuel from line, by "P E" lettering on the line This is a major concern as any flame near the vehicle would cause it to go up in flames. The manufacturer should correct this problem. I see no reason why this hard plastic pipe developed a hole. It is product defect.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-04-22
  • VIN: 1GCGTDEN4H1
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: Truck started having electrical issue after finding a dead squirrel in the engine. Taken to dealership 9/2/2023 and was told the wiring harness needed replacement. Left the truck there for 2.5 months with no repair so we brought the truck home in December 2023 and asked them to call us when they got the part. Had a rainstorm the following day and the truck tried to start itself, wipers running, lights flashing, and smell of something burning. Disconnected the battery and had truck towed to Beach Chevrolet Dealership. Damage was worse than they originally thought and we still needed a new wiring harness. That particular wiring harness has been discontinued by GM and they are unable to find the part anywhere. The truck is still at the dealership and it will be 8 months on May 2, 2024. State Farm refuses to total the truck and we have no idea when our vehicle will be repaired. Have contacted GM customer Disservice repeatedly with no resolution in site. What recourse do we have?

Also Radio infotainment system doesn't respond to touch, however it has a mind of its own, blaring radio volume up and changing channels on its own. Very distressing and distracting while driving. Also a $185 diagnostic for looking at this as well. I had purchased an extended warranty and extended maintenance agreement. The dealer told me they won't fix it unless I pay for the diagnostics and they won't have the extended warranty company fix it under my original extention warranty agreement. This all happened before my vehicle had 26000 miles.

  • VIN: 1GCHTCEN2H1
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: I took my 2017 Chevrolet Colorada in for an oil change and when exiting the building I made a sharp left turn at very slow parking lot speed. The steering wheel locked up and was difficult to break loosed. I had the mechanic come out and he drove the Colorada around the building and it locked up on him also. This could be a very life threatening situation had it not been in the parking lot. I drove directly to the Chevrolet dealer to report the problem and they had never heard of this happening. I beg to differ on there statement as I did an Internet search and found numerous problems the same as mine from owners of Colorado, Silverado and GMS pickups. I am actually hesitant to drive this vehicle for fear of have a catastrophic failure causing injury or death. I was at a Jiffylube service center at the time and the certified mechanic drove the vehicle. Negative 2017 Chevrolet Colorado car reviews

  1. Lukas Doyle 2024-11-27

I really enjoy driving my 2017 Z71 4WD Colorado with the 2.8L Duramax, but unfortunately, the high pressure fuel pump replacement cost of $5k is too expensive. The diesel shops don't have the necessary equipment to do it, so I am limited to the dealership and their pricing algorithm. It's frustrating to feel powerless with no other options, but due to the diesel configuration, I have to pay the $5k even though I am still under 100,000 miles. It's understandable why Chevy only warranties up to 60,000 miles on the Colorado. Just a word of caution for anyone considering this vehicle.

  2. Berry Spinka 2024-11-24

I recently traded in my 2015 Nissan Pro4x extended cab for a 2017 Colorado z71 extended cab. I made this purchase based solely on ratings as the dealer did not have any in stock. While the front seats of the Frontier were more comfortable and better looking, the back seat area in the Frontier was useable but not comfortable. Unfortunately, the Colorado's back seat is not even useable. Additionally, I found that the headlight switch and the 4 wheel drive switch on the Colorado are poorly positioned, and I have found that my legs move these switches when getting in or out of the vehicle. This has caused me to drive around in 4-wheel drive when I didn't need it. Also, I can't see these switches when driving. The throttle response combined with the shifting of the 8 speed transmission provide a feeling of hesitation. The back doors must be slammed hard to get the door ajar light off. However, the ride on the highway is car-like and smooth. I paid extra to get the Cajun Red Tintcoat exterior color, and I really like the way it looks. Although I have only put about 750 miles on this truck, I would trade it for a new Pro4x if I could afford it. Update: I eventually traded the 2017 Colorado in for a 2017 Nissan Frontier Pro4x. Although I lost my shirt on the deal, I absolutely love my Frontier.

  3. Casimir Hilpert 2024-11-01

We have owned 4 Nissan Frontiers in the past. However, when we bought the 2017 Colorado Crew Cab on December 28, 2017, we faced some issues. Within a week and less than 100 miles, the check engine light came on and we had to replace the purge valve. Additionally, the cab kept fogging up and the seats were not comfortable. My husband was also not a fan of the fact that you couldn't tell if you were in 4-wheel drive unless in a dark room at midnight with the lights off. In contrast, the Nissan shows the 4 wheels in the dash. He also did not like the sound of the engine or transmission, but after reading the manual, we realized that it was normal. Furthermore, he was not a fan of the gas cap, or lack thereof, as water and ice could get into the gas tank and the gas lid wouldn't seal correctly. Although the Colorado is a sharp looking truck, it was not the right fit for us. We decided to trade it back for a 2017 Nissan Frontier, which is our 4th Nissan since 2012. We love it because it has more options than the Colorado and is more comfortable and user-friendly. The infotainment center is also a great feature. Although we have owned GM products before, we were very disappointed in this one. We had thought of trading my Rogue in for an Equinox in a few years, but after this experience, we have changed our minds.

  4. Alexis Kunde 2024-10-25

Hey there! I drive a 2017 4-cylinder 6-speed automatic and overall, I'm pretty happy with it. While I did test drive the Tacoma, I probably should have waited for the Ford Ranger. The size and performance of the truck are as expected, nothing too flashy, but it gets the job done. I've been diligent about keeping up with maintenance, changing the oil, rotating the tires, and following the recommended schedule. Unfortunately, at 25k miles, the transmission started to shift harshly while accelerating from 35mph to keep up with traffic. I noticed that if I eased off the accelerator, it would accelerate more normally. The check engine light never went on and there were no reports of issues. However, at 26k miles, the check engine light came on and the truck wouldn't shift into 5th or 6th gear. I was going down a fairly steep hill in the Texas Hill Country, and even though I wasn't using the accelerator at all, the truck wouldn't shift into 5th or 6th gear, and the tachometer read 4,500 rpm. I threw on the hazards and limped to the dealership 2 miles away. They are now telling me that the transmission needs to be torn down and the input shaft needs to be replaced-- they hope. I've driven Hyundai Sonatas (2 of them) from 2009-2017, and I lost a total of 3 days of downtime due to maintenance issues. In 8 years and 300k miles, I only had 3 days of downtime. However, in just 15 months and 26k miles, I've already had at least a week of downtime. The technician at the dealership in Kerrville TX (population 27k) said that he hadn't seen this issue, but another technician at the shop had. There isn't much chatter online about it, from what I've read, but there are a lot of posts about problems with the 6-cylinder, 8-speed configuration. I'm pretty disappointed with Chevy and I don't think I'll be buying from them again. If they can't get the workhorse small truck segment right, then what are they in business for? Thanks for listening to my rant!

I recently leased a 2017 Chevy Colorado Extended Cab Long Bed 2WD with only 13 miles on it. Although it was brand new, I found that it did not meet my expectations. I had previously owned a 2006 Honda Ridgeline, which I now realize was a much better choice. The Chevy Colorado, being a 2WD 4cyl, lacked the power and acceleration that I was looking for. Additionally, the extended cab doors were inconvenient and the quality of the truck was poor. The interior was made of cheap plastic and the Bluetooth was not up to par. I would recommend considering other options when looking for a new truck. There are many better made and higher quality trucks available on the market.

Positive 2017 Chevrolet Colorado car reviews

  1. Clay Bashirian 2024-11-24

Hey there! I recently purchased this truck and have been enjoying it as my daily driver, with some light off-roading thrown in. So far, it's been great! However, I do have a few suggestions for improvements that would make it even better. Firstly, I think it would be awesome if the rock sliders were attached to the frame and protruded out to double as steps. Secondly, having a 110v power outlet and an on-board air compressor would be really useful. Thirdly, a power sliding rear window would be a great addition. Fourthly, more anchor points in the truck bed would be really helpful. Fifthly, more grab handles would be appreciated, especially for the driver's side A pillar and passenger windows. Sixthly, a better blind spot mirror on the driver's side (and passenger side too!) would be a big improvement. Seventhly, it would be great to have provisions for auxiliary light switches for additional off-road lights. Lastly, accessories that are compatible with the light bar bolted to the truck bed would be fantastic, as it currently prevents installation of a tool box or tonneau cover. These small changes would make this truck even more utilitarian and better than most. Thanks for listening!

  2. Candelario Rohan 2024-10-19

This car has performed above expectations. The diesel engine is great and gets over 30 mpg. The comfort and ride are very good. When towing a 3 1/2 ton trailer, it gets 16+ MPG.

Hello! Thank you for considering the 2017 Colorado for your hauling needs. I wanted to let you know that the tailgate may not go completely flat to the truck bed, as the trailing edge is about 1 & 1/2 inches higher. While this may not be ideal for carrying longer items that need to be completely flat, the truck bed is still a great option for hauling other items. I did reach out to Chevrolet regarding the tailgate, but unfortunately, they were unable to provide me with the name of the supplier. Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns!

Down sized from 1500 Silverado 4 wheel drive crew. I was amazed with the smooth and quiet ride of this vehicle. It's just as good as the Silverado. With only 2500 miles on it, I'm already averaging 25 plus mpg. The Bose sound system with nav and heated seats are a great addition. As someone who is 6' tall, leg room is no issue for me. I will definitely buy this vehicle again.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my 2017 Colorado. Before purchasing it, I read some reviews about potential transmission issues, specifically with the Shutter valve or torque converter. However, I decided to go for it and bought one with 30,000 miles. The previous owner had already taken it to the dealer to replace the shutter valve due to some slipping issues. I have noticed some similar problems in the mornings when I first put it in reverse, but it seems to be okay after a little bit. My main concern is the hard shifting, especially when slowing down at a stop sign. I took it to the dealer, but unfortunately, they wouldn't do anything, not even a diagnostic. However, my personal mechanic was able to hook it up and show me the history. Chevy did mention that there were some letters out about customers experiencing hard shifting, but they assured me that it wouldn't affect the life of the transmission. I really love this truck and I'm hoping that it won't have any major issues after the 60K warranty. Thanks for listening!
