1996 Chrysler Cirrus problems
The Chrysler Cirrus is a mid-sized 4-door notchback sedan introduced by Chrysler motors for the 1995 model year. Built on the Chrysler JA platform, the 4-door notchback sedan joined Chrysler's roster of "Cloud Car" models drawing their names from meteorological terms, including the mid-priced Dodge Stratus it was based on introduced at the same time, and the low-priced Plymouth Breeze variant a year later.
Design
Development of the Cirrus started in 1991, with the goal of creating an affordable, expressive-looking, fun-to-drive vehicle that was still safe enough to transport an everyday family.
The concept car designed for the 1992 auto show circuit featured rear suicide doors and a 400 hp (298 kW; 406 PS) turbocharged 3.0 L two-stroke engine using alcohol fuel. The concept also foreshadowed a hood-line with almost no break with the windshield to improve aerodynamics.
Both the concept and production model used the Chrysler Corporation's new cab-forward design, which was launched on the larger LH sedans in 1992. This three-box design was characterized by a large passenger cabin in proportion to a comparatively short hood and trunk, highlighted by a long, dramatically slanted windshield and short overhangs. Pushing the wheels further to the corners of the body created a much larger cabin than most other similarly sized vehicles of that time.
The a four-door notchback sedan was designed with flowing lines with no distinct beginning or end, but almost resembled a two-box fastback. Design work was done during 1991, with the final version moved on for production by 1992.

The engine can shut off while driving, fail to turn over, stall when slowing down, and cause difficulties starting. These issues can be caused by various factors, including fuel system problems, electrical issues, and engine wear and tear.
In addition to these problems, the Chrysler Cirrus has also been reported to have difficulties with the electrical system, including the horn going off on its own. This issue can be caused by various factors, including faulty wiring, a malfunctioning horn switch, or a problem with the vehicle's electrical system.
The Chrysler Cirrus is also known for having problems with the fuel system, with 2 complaints reported for the first generation of the vehicle. These issues can be caused by various factors, including a faulty fuel pump, clogged fuel filter, or a problem with the fuel injectors.
Finally, the Chrysler Cirrus has been reported to have problems with the transmission, with 1 complaint reported for the first generation of the vehicle. This issue can be caused by various factors, including low transmission fluid levels, a faulty transmission solenoid, or a problem with the transmission itself.
In summary, the Chrysler Cirrus is known for several common problems, including issues with the spark plug tube seals, starting and stalling, engine problems, electrical issues, fuel system problems, and transmission issues. These issues can be caused by various factors and can lead to costly repairs. I hope you're doing well! I just wanted to share my experience with my Cirrus, which I bought brand new in 1995. I've had such a great time owning it! The best part is that I've never had to take it to the shop for unscheduled maintenance. It's amazing how efficient it is too - I get 29-30 MPG on the highway (with the V6) and 18-20 in the city. If you put a K&N air filter and better rubber on the car, it'll really get up and go! Overall, I've had a totally positive experience with my Cirrus. I completely agree! This car is fantastic for both zipping around town and hauling larger items. It's been nothing but a pleasure to drive.

This is the best car I've owned so far! I purchased it when it was 3 years old and it was immaculately maintained. It's still in great condition and I haven't needed any major repairs. It handles great. The air conditioning system is a little weak, but it still gets the job done if you turn it up high enough.

After owning a VW Dasher, which was fun to drive but a mechanical disaster, and a Dodge (Mitsubishi) Colt, which was reliable and had great mileage but was small and had poor acceleration, I wanted something bigger with a little style and power. The Cirrus served me well with its 6 cylinders providing extra power, comfort, a surprisingly roomy interior, and decent mileage (26/30). I had a few problems, but they were all expensive: first the computer control module, then the A/C compressor, then the condenser, and finally a major brake job. The engine mounts went early at 90000, but little else happened for 7 years. I found that the extended warranty (both dealer and aftermarket) was worthwhile. The battery was a bit hard to reach in the driver wheel well, but it lasted 5 years in Arizona, which was a plus.

I use my Cirrus both for traveling the Interstates and getting around New York City. It's very maneuverable and reliable. It's even more enjoyable to drive since I installed Sirius satellite radio. However, I have found that the costs to maintain the car are shockingly high. For example, the OEM muffler or catalytic converter each sell for over $300 retail. To replace transmission seals requires the transmission to be dropped, and that can run over $600 at a discount transmission shop.

I would suggest not solely relying on the 'Car of The Year' award when making a purchase decision. Unfortunately, the vehicle mentioned in this review has had several issues such as a bad radiator at 40K (approx), a broken control arm bracket at 30K, leaking freeze plugs at 60K, and clunking noises in the front left suspension and right rear that have not been resolved. Additionally, the radio display stopped working and the replacement has also failed, and the air conditioning unit had a kinked metal tube that prevented it from cooling below 80 degrees. The door panels also seem to have issues with paint scratching off around the hand rest. It's important to consider all factors when making a purchase decision and to do thorough research before committing to a vehicle.

As you may have read in other reviews, I have had some issues with the reliability of this car. Unfortunately, I have had to take it to the shop four times in the six months since I bought it. I have had to replace the fuel pump, fuel filter, idle motor, cap and rotor, new ty rods and ball joint so far. Currently, it is in the garage because it needs a new coil pack/distributor that costs over $800. My mechanic has had the car more than I have. I would advise you to consider other options.

This is my first car, and I think it's pretty decent. Although it has been in the shop a few times, I'm grateful for the comfortable seats and spacious backseat. Unfortunately, the dealership hasn't been much help and has even caused some issues. The car struggles a bit when passing on a two-lane highway, but overall it's been okay. The keyless entry and door locks have been a bit finicky, but I'm managing. It does use up quite a bit of gas, but oh well!

This car is alright. I've had it for about 8 months. The only issue I had was that it wasn't shifting properly. The mechanics had trouble with the trans control module and output speed sensor, but they eventually got it right. Overall, the car looks good, drives well, and is just an average car.

I bought this car on a whim when I was pregnant, thinking it would run great since it had just gotten a new engine. Unfortunately, it has been very unreliable and has cost me a lot of money. I worry about my daughter's safety when we're in it because it dies frequently. Additionally, the heater and odometer don't work, and I've had to replace several sensors and a tie rod end. The speakers also don't work well, and the computer is going out. Overall, it has been a frustrating experience, and I wouldn't choose to own one again.
