2021 Hyundai Venue problems

hyundai logo

The Hyundai Venue (Korean: 현대 베뉴) is a subcompact crossover SUV manufactured by the South Korean manufacturer Hyundai. The Venue debuted at the 2019 New York International Auto Show as Hyundai's smallest global crossover, prior to the introduction of other smaller SUVs such as the Casper and Exter.

As of 2023, the Venue is positioned between the Kona or Creta, and above the Exter or Casper in Hyundai's international crossover lineup. It shares its platform with the fifth-generation Accent.

Overview

Two versions of the Venue were developed and produced for different markets. The Korean-made Venue is code named QX or QX1, while the Indian-oriented, internally code named as QXi, is shorter in length and wheelbase than the Korean version.

The Venue is not marketed in Europe in favour of the European-focused, Hyundai i20-based Bayon which was introduced in 2021.

Common 2021 Hyundai Venue problems

The Hyundai Venue, a subcompact crossover SUV introduced in 2020, has been praised for its spacious interior, fuel efficiency, and affordability. However, some owners have reported issues with the vehicle, particularly in the 2020 model year. Here are some common problems based on complaints from Hyundai Venue 2021 owners:

  • Transmission failure at low mileage: Some owners of the 2020 Hyundai Venue have reported transmission failure at low mileage. Although there are fewer reports of transmission issues with the 2021 model, it is still advisable to have the vehicle checked regularly to ensure proper transmission function.
  • Squeaking when going in reverse: A few owners of the 2020 Hyundai Venue have reported a squeaking noise when the vehicle is put in reverse.
  • Interior quality: While the Hyundai Venue offers a spacious interior, some owners have criticized the quality of the materials used in the cabin. This is particularly true for the lower trim levels, where hard plastics are more prevalent.
  • Performance: Some owners have reported that the Hyundai Venue's acceleration is slower than most competitors, which may be a concern for those seeking a more responsive driving experience.
  • Infotainment system: While the infotainment system in the Hyundai Venue is generally well-regarded, some owners have reported issues with the Apple CarPlay disconnecting.
  • Steering issues: A single report of steering issues has been documented for the 2021 Hyundai Venue, but it is not a widespread problem.

It is important to note that Hyundai is generally known for its reliability and excellent warranty, with a reliability rating of 4.0 out of 5.0 according to RepairPal. However, as with any vehicle, it is essential to have the Hyundai Venue regularly serviced and maintained to ensure its longevity and reliability.

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-09-23
  • VIN: KMHRC8A3XMU
  • Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: Loss of drive power and rough idle. Intermittent no start due to voltage drop. Suspected shorted egr valve causing multiple parts on the same circut to go bad. Brought the car to dealer for the 6th time due to loss of power while driving and rough idle. Asked for a diagnostic of the egr valve due to matching symptoms to the egr recall of the 2024 venue which is the same part number installed in my vehicle. Was informed they can't get it covered under warranty without a code present even if it was faulty. Was sent on my way with a dangerously running car. The egr valve is actuating when not commanded and getting stuck in the opposite position as commanded throwing crankshaft position codes due to being on the same circut and has bèen happeneing since new. My children and my self have almost been in two separate crashes already and if the 2024 hyundai venue egr valve recall is not expanded to include the 2021 there will be fatalities from this issue. POWER TRAIN,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-07-26
  • VIN: KMHRC8A35MU
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,ENGINE
  • Summary: My 2021 Hyundai venue at or around 43,000 miles, certified pre owned, and bought January 2024 while at a gas station parking lot. Started my vehicle and put it in reverse to leave gas station began smoking, as I put it back in drive to get out of traffic was a loud noise and I immediately stopped turned off the car. Found two parts from my engine on the ground in the parking lot. Was towed to Bentley Hyundai dealership in Huntsville, Al. This happened on [XXX]. On or about 7/29/2024 Bentley Hyundai did a diagnostic and I was told I need an engine replacement, Hyundai approved the engine replacement, and they ordered parts. On or about 8/7/2024 I asked Hyundai for the repair order and on the paper they gave me said the harmonic balancer/crank shaft broke. I spoke to one of the mechanics at Hyundai as I needed to get some personal items out of my car and the gentleman I spoke with said he doesn’t know how this happened that a bolt broke but that bolt was not supposed to break like it did. Said “it was pretty cool to see” . My vehicle still currently sits at Bentley Hyundai until parts come in. My vehicle was purchased at Tameron Hyundai in Hoover, Al. UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-07-16
  • VIN: KMHRC8A31MU
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: MY 2021 venue had less than 24,000 miles when this problem occurred. i am the original owner and until recently, worked from home. i started having issues when i put the key in the ignition to start my vehicle. none of the dash lights or A/C control would come on. i had to re-try two to three times to get it to work. when i took my vehicle in for regular maintenance and informed my dealership of the issue they did a diagnostic and called me with the results. i was informed there was a problem with the tumbler in the ignition switch and that it would be covered under my warranty; however, the warranty did not cover the re-keying of my entire vehicle. i would have to continue to use my key fob to unlock my doors but would have an additional key to turn on my vehicle. now i have basically two keys to my car. i do not understand why the warranty would not cover the entire re-keying of my vehicle so that the key fob would work on everything. i am the original owner of the vehicle, which i leased in january 2021 (and subsequently purchased in april 2024 when the lease expired). i find this unacceptable.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-06-18
  • VIN: KMHRC8A3XMU
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: Lost all acceleration and car started bucking while making a a left through oncoming traffic narrowly avoiding getting t boned on passenger side of vehicle with my child on that side of vehicle. No check engine light or codes during or after incident. Even though the car was now not idling correctly. had car towed to dealer for the fifth time and they reprogrammed the transmission for the third time. They called to tell me it was ready for pick up. I refused and asked that they diagnose the issue since it has become dangerous to drive the vehicle. They drove the car looking at live data and discovered the transmission was slipping. And replaced the transmission. Someone is going to get seriously injured in these vehicles if the vehicles computer is unable to warn the driver about a catastrophic power train failure. I have had this car towed five times due to issues which assumably were all due to the failing transmission but were non repeatable at the dealer putting me in danger every time I picked it up.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,BACK OVER PREVENTION PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-12-12
  • VIN: KMHRC8A39MU
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,BACK OVER PREVENTION
  • Summary: This is a follow up to # 11560029, submitted 12/13/2023. On 12/14/2023, dealership updated the display software that I also previously updated on my own. Dealership unable to update navigation software because my car doesn't have navigation installed. Back up camera issue still persists with camera remaining on in neutral and drive as software update did nothing to correct the issue.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,BACK OVER PREVENTION PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-12-12
  • VIN: KMHRC8A39MU
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,BACK OVER PREVENTION
  • Summary: The backup camera stays on even in neutral and drive mode. In reverse the guide lines are present, however they are not present when in drive or neutral but the camera remains on. This is a safety hazard because it is very distracting to drive forward with live video on the 8" screen. I believe this is also illegal in my state when my teen is driving the car as state law does not permit drivers age 16-18 to use any hands-free devices when driving. I'm sure this includes live video being displayed even if it is the backup camera. Dealership reproduced the problem. I also have video of backup camera on while driving forward. Dealership service writer told me it "might" be that the navigation system needs updating. I told him I already updated the navigation. He told me to try again and acknowledged that the "process isn't easy". He says this is not covered by Hyundai. Apparently customers are responsible to update navigation/display software, even though my car was purchased brand new at the dealership in May 2021, is less than 3 year old (still under warranty) and has less than 25,000 miles on. The estimate to update the navigation, even though they aren't certain this is the problem is over $585. In Nov. 2021 (3,140 miles) the car was not turning over & starting. The dealership couldn't reproduce the problem, but discovered the horn wasn't working. They stated on the paperwork that I said it was not working, but I didn't not know that was the case. The dealership "energized horn and dislodged coil in horn assembly" and now horn works and coincidentally the problem with the engine not starting went away. The steering also makes a noise on occasion when turning which I suspect is also an electrical issue. All these electrical-like problems pose a safety risk and I am starting to believe they are all connected. I also feel it poses an additional risk to leave software updates to the customers when it involves safety features like the backup camera and display.

STEERING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-03-28
  • VIN: KMHRC8A32MU
  • Components: STEERING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: The ignition failed me as a customer. Vehicle was stolen outside my residence. No keys were left in vehicle. This is very dangerous and high risk especially due to rise in crime rates of car jacking. My vehicle has been recovered and in the dealership collision center since March 30, 2023. My vehicle has never been in any accidents, with the exception of this thief. Not quite sure of the outcome of the manufacture, highway traffic center nor dealership. The information that I’ve gathered is a lot of Hyundai and Kia vehicles are being stolen due to a leaked video on how to steal these brand of cars, which is terrible for buyers and owners. Please address these concerns, issues and unsettling problems for your customer safety.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-08-24
  • VIN: KMHRC8A32MU
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: I have had my horn fail 4 or 5 times since owning the car. It first failed when I got the car and somehow the horn wires has came loose. The second time it failed it completely failed and was replaced under warranty. The horn that was replaced the under warranty failed over the winter in like November of 2021. I had it looked at and they said that it worked when they tested it in a warm environment. Left the dealership and was told that if it failed to just call them and they would order a replacement for it under warranty. That had never happened they looked at the horn again and ordered the replacement that was installed in march or April this year. And it failed again yesterday 8/24/22. Please have this addressed under a recall since I really do not want to keep pouring money into replacing the same part that fails every 4-6 months

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-10-26
  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: KMHRC8A34MU
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: My daughter was driving the car and about to go around a turn when she says her steering locked up and she ran over a curb on the opposite side of the road, popping two tires. She was going slow enough at the time that there were no injuries, only damage to the car. We told the dealership about the incident and had it towed to the dealership. The dealership did not thoroughly address the problem. When I took the car from the dealership I tried to jiggle the keys as I was driving. I had this problem with a Chrysler years ago. If the key was bumped while driving the power would shut off and the power steering would fail. In this case the power to the car did shut off when I slightly turn the key towards me. I was in drive road going about 40 miles per hour at the time. I did not lose steering but I did lose all acceleration. The car acted like in had been parked. I put the car in neutral and restarted the car with the key and everything returned to normal operation. I repeated this process several more times that night with the same results. Total loss of power to the car and the engine turned off. I can only imagine what could happen to an inexperienced driver when they lose all acceleration at a high rate of speed due to a simple 1/4 inch or so twist of the key.

EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-07-25
  • VIN: KMHRC8A36MU
  • Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
  • Summary: I purchased this vehicle on 7/25/2021 and didn't drive it at night until 6 days later. When I turned on the headlights, I was shocked to find that they only illuminate a very small portion of the road, hindering my ability to see traffic in front of me, or anything else that may be on the road beyond a few feet. It's as if I'm driving in a dark tunnel, and also cannot see the side of the road. If a deer or other animal or person suddenly ran into the road, I would have no reaction time. I immediately filed a claim with Hyundai, and three months later I heard back saying they deny that anything is wrong with the vehicle. The dealer service manager has looked at the car twice and has admitted that it's a known problem but states, "that's just the way they are made." I have found facebook groups and posts with other owners stating the same issue. This is an enormous safety hazard. I requested that Hyundai replace the headlights or buy back the vehicle but they refuse. I can't safely drive my new car at night.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-03-15
  • VIN: KMHRC8A33MU
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: THE HORN STARTED LOSING VOLUME BUT WOULD REGAIN IT BACK ONCE THE WEATHER WARMED UP. I HAVE TO PARK OVERNIGHT OUTDOORS FOR WORK AND WHEN IT SNOWS AND GETS BETWEEN 20-25 DEGREES OUTSIDE, THE HORN STARTS BEING SYMPTOMATIC. NOW IT DOESN'T WORK AT ALL AND IT AFFECTS MY ALERT AND SAFETY SYSTEM BECAUSE I HAVE NO WAY OF WARNING OTHER DRIVERS OR PEDESTRIANS AROUND ME. THE OTHER FAULT I HAVE NOTICED IS THAT THE APPLECAR PLAY OR THE DISPLAY ITSELF LOSES ITS CONNECTION BETWEEN APPLE CARPLAY AND THE DISPLAY. THIS CAUSES THE DRIVER TO LOSE ATTENTION FROM THE ROAD AND THE DRIVER LOSES ACCESS TO THE VISUAL MAP WHICH IS EXTREMELY DANGEROUS IN NIGHT TIME AND SNOWY CONDITIONS.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2020-12-10
  • VIN: KMHRC8A33MU

THE ONLY WAY TO HAVE NAVIGTION IS TO USE THE WIRELESS AND SEVERAL TIMES THE MAPS DROPPED OUT ALTHOUGH WE HAD CELLULAR SERVICE AND THE MAP WENT BLANK WHILE NAVIGATING AND MISSED TURNOFF AND ALMOST HAD ACCIDENT BECAUSE IT ALSO LOCKED UP THE IPHONE SCREEN. WENT TO TWO HYUNDAI DEALERSHIPS IN SAN ANTONIO AND NEITHER HAD EVER SEEN THIS PROBLEM. SERVICE MANAGER AND SALEPEOPLE SPENT ALMOST 2 HOURS USING 5 DIFFERENT IPHONE, XR, 11, 11PRO, 12 PRO AND 6S WITH THE MOST CURRENT IOS 14.2 AND COULD NOT MAKE IT WORK CORRECTLY. Negative 2021 Hyundai Venue car reviews

  1. Jamie Treutel 2024-11-17

I have the 2021 Venue Essential because I was determined to get a manual car. I've always driven manuals and I love it. However, I have experienced some issues with this car. During my test drive, I noticed a grinding noise when I shift gears, which has been quite loud and persistent. Despite bringing this up with the dealership, they didn't seem to take it seriously at first. After a few months, they did replace the clutch slave cylinder, which has made a slight improvement, but the noise is still present. Additionally, I have had some issues with the front speakers and brakes, but the dealership has been working to address these problems. Overall, I would recommend being cautious when considering this car.

  2. Charles Kohler 2024-08-24

The vehicle has good gas mileage, but it is cheaply made. Unfortunately, the seat belts are not adjustable and can cut into your neck. Additionally, the wiper blades are not very effective and do not provide a clean wipe, even when the vehicle was new. The tires tend to squeal even at low speeds, such as when reversing into a spot or after it rains. Perhaps investing a little more in a higher quality vehicle would be a better choice next time.

  3. Kiel Champlin 2024-05-17

The mid-range venue was purchased new in 2019 and has less than 20,000km's. Unfortunately, it has broken down three times with the same issue and had to be towed back to the dealer. It has been at the dealers for 10 days now waiting for parts. As a result, the vehicle's reliability has been called into question. While this is disappointing, we are confident that the dealer will resolve the issue and ensure that the vehicle is in top condition. Thank you for your patience and understanding.

  4. Keshaun Walker 2024-03-01

Hi there! If you're short on space, have you considered renting a storage unit for a week or so before committing to a purchase? It could be a great way to test out the space and see if it's the right fit for you.

  5. Dario White 2024-01-03

The headlights on this car may pose a challenge in certain driving conditions. While they provide adequate visibility on flat and straight roads, they may cause some obstruction on curves or hills at night. I understand your frustration with Hyundai's response, and I hope we can find a solution that works for you. Thank you for bringing this to our attention.

Positive 2021 Hyundai Venue car reviews

  1. Dominic Stiedemann 2025-01-08

If you live in a snowy area, this car is perfect for driving in rural winter conditions. It has a heated steering wheel, seats, and mirrors, as well as good road clearance, even at the front. Front-wheel drive is all you need, and with winter tires, it's excellent in the snow. It's also fun to drive in the summer, peppy, roomy, and frugal. I hope this engine is better than the troubled Elantra engines, etc. Although strong winds can blow you around a bit, the CVT is nice, but unfortunately, I couldn't get a manual. I had a problem with the AC quitting at 11,000 km, and it hasn't been repaired yet, even after a month.

  2. Joaquin Baumbach 2025-01-07

I recently purchased this car after owning a Mercedes E-class for many years. I am thoroughly impressed with the top trim. The leatherette trimmed seats have a unique design and the cabin is well thought out, without looking or feeling cheap. It feels like you're in a more expensive car. The boxy shape is great for headroom and it's loaded with features such as heated seats and great tech, all for a reasonable price. Using sport mode makes the car plenty zippy for everyday and highway driving, passing, etc. We have been averaging 31-34 mpg in mixed driving and have had zero issues so far. The transmission is one of the best we tested. I am extremely pleased with this mini crossover.

I've been a loyal Hyundai owner since 2000 and when I saw the Hyundai Venue, I knew it was going to be my next car. I chose the Denim model and I couldn't be happier with my decision. The car is amazing and the technology is incredible. I learn something new about the car every week. The gas mileage is great for long distance driving (approximately 70 miles a day) and the style is head-turning. The interior is spacious and the ride is smooth. The safety features in the Venue are better than many luxury vehicles I've seen. It's truly a great vehicle at an incredible price. I had the windows tinted and I get a lot of compliments. You'll love this car! It's the best buy for your money.

Great car for the money! It's compact but fairly roomy.
