2023 Alfa romeo Stelvio problems

The Alfa Romeo Stelvio (Type 949) is a car produced by the Italian manufacturer Alfa Romeo since 2016. As a D-segment model it slots above the smaller Tonale model in the marque's SUV range. A large SUV, it was first revealed at the 2016 Los Angeles Auto Show, introduced by a 60" short film directed by Louis Sebastian Pane, and entered production at the Cassino Plant at the end of 2016. In 2018 it was Alfa Romeo's best-selling model, with roughly 43,000 sold that year.

The Stelvio uses FCA's Giorgio platform, shared with the D-segment Giulia saloon. The name Stelvio derives from the Stelvio Pass, Italy's highest mountain pass, noted for its 48 circuitous switchbacks.

Characteristics

The Stelvio uses the same Giorgio platform already used by the Giulia, but slightly modified and raised by 22 cm (8.7 in). The Stelvio also shares the same engines and most of the mechanics, including a carbon-fibre driveshaft. In addition, its track width has increased by 2.9 cm (1.1 in) in the rear and 5.4 cm (2.1 in) in the front. It has a boot capacity of 525 L (18.5 cu ft). The boot sill is aligned with the rear bumper and cargo does not need to be lifted over a lip when being removed. There are large vehicle blind spots behind the car's pillars. It has a 50/50 weight distribution and a drag coefficient of 0.32 (Cd). Euro NCAP classify it as a large off-road car.

In order to reduce the weight of the car, aluminium is used for body panels, as well as for mechanical parts such as the suspension, brakes, and engine. The suspension, called AlfaLink, implements double wishbones in the front, and an aluminium multi-link configuration in the rear. The springs are longer than those in the Giulia, but stiffer to account for the extra weight and ride height. The driver sits nearly 20 cm (7.9 in) higher from the road than in the Giulia. The suspension is tuned for improved handling and driving dynamics, which can compromise ride quality if optional larger-diameter wheels are fitted.

Rear-wheel drive as standard, the Stelvio can be optioned with an Alfa Romeo "Q4" all-wheel drive system, which can send up to 50% of power to the front in low-grip conditions. The Stelvio weighs 1,660 kg (3,660 lb) with all fluids, 145 kg (320 lb) less than an equivalent BMW X3 and 110 kg (243 lb) less than a four-cylinder Porsche Macan. The car's braking system is designed to be less-susceptible to brake fade, which can take time for unfamiliar drivers to get used to.

All models feature an 8.8-inch infotainment system with Apple Car Play and Android Auto as standard, while small tweaks have been made throughout the ranges.

Common 2023 Alfa romeo Stelvio problems

Common Problems with the Alfa Romeo Stelvio 2023:

  • Engine and Engine Cooling: Electrical issues can cause overheating, leading to damage in the engine compartment and potentially causing a fire. Such heat damage can also lead to the engine stalling, increasing the risk of a vehicular collision.
  • **Structure: Corrosion at the connectors could lead to the liftgate unintentionally opening while driving at speeds under 3 miles per hour. This could result in cargo being dislodged from the vehicle, creating a hazard on the road.
  • Oil Leaks: Some owners of the Alfa Romeo Stelvio have reported oil leaks, which can be a nuisance and may require towing the vehicle to a shop for repairs.
  • Spark Plug Problems: Recurring spark plug problems have been reported by some owners of the Alfa Romeo Stelvio. These issues can cause white smoke to appear out of the tailpipes and may prevent the vehicle from staying running.
  • Interior Issues: The interior of the Alfa Romeo Stelvio has been criticized for having low-rent interior pieces, unintuitive infotainment controls, and high ownership costs.
  • Infotainment System: The infotainment system in the Alfa Romeo Stelvio has been criticized for having dated graphics, a screen that is not particularly bright, and being slow to respond to inputs. Additionally, connecting a phone to Bluetooth can take a while, and the system may not be as responsive as other infotainment systems.
  • Parts Availability: There have been reports of long wait times for Alfa Romeo parts, which can be a significant issue if the vehicle needs repairs.
  • Reliability: While newer models of the Alfa Romeo Stelvio have proven to be more reliable than older ones, they are still not as reliable as economy brands. They are more expensive to maintain than economy brands when they do break, and right now the wait for Alfa Romeo parts is several months long.
  • Service Departments: Some owners of the Alfa Romeo Stelvio have reported issues with service departments, including long wait times for repairs and shady business practices.

Negative 2023 Alfa romeo Stelvio car reviews

  1. Eli Senger 2024-10-18

*********UPDATED REVIEW 10/9/22: Hi everyone, I wanted to share an update on my experience with the Alfa Romeo dealership in Glendale, CA. Initially, I had given them a one-star review, but I'm happy to say that I've updated it to two stars thanks to the amazing customer service I received. Despite facing a challenging situation with my car being disassembled in a body shop for several months due to a missing part, the service manager, Jerry Gordon, went above and beyond to find a solution. He was able to locate a suitable part in Florida and had it shipped to our body shop in California the following week. As of 10/8/22, our car is finally repaired and drivable again! I'm grateful for Jerry's outside-the-box thinking and dedication to finding a solution when no one else could. I only wish I had been put in touch with him earlier, as it would have saved us months of waiting. Thank you, Jerry, and the team at Alfa Romeo Glendale for your excellent customer service! In my opinion, if you purchase or lease an Alfa and nothing goes wrong with the car, you'll probably be very happy with it. However, if something does go wrong, you might be in for a very long wait with an unusable car due to persistent supply chain issues. Therefore, I would not recommend getting an Alfa as a daily driver, unless you also have a second/backup vehicle for your use. We were fortunate that Jerry Gordon was so resourceful, once I finally got to speak with him, or else we would still be out of a car right now. The car may look cool and drive well, but if you experience ANY problems with it, customer care will not help you!! We purchased a brand new $58,000+ Alfa Romeo Stelvio, and while it was parked, someone hit the headlight in the parking lot. We took it to the body shop. The tab on the old headlight was broken, so when they removed it, it could not be put back. The body shop placed the order for the new part in June 2022. The part was apparently backordered. We understand that there have been worldwide part shortages due to COVID, so we have been patiently waiting since then, and paying for Ubers completely out of pocket. To our dismay, the ETA for the part kept getting pushed back--eventually, until Sept 2022. But now, in September 2022, Alfa is saying that the part will be even more delayed--and the best they could tell us was a vague To make matters worse, when I called customer service and asked to speak to a higher-level manager, they hung up on me. It's really disappointing to have such a negative experience with Alfa Premium Care. In contrast, I've owned Lexus and Infiniti vehicles that I bought used with 100k+ miles and I was always treated like a valued customer whenever I went to the dealership. They provided me with loaners, coffee, and super kind and respectful customer service. This is exactly what you expect when you buy a luxury brand. I've never had any issues with parts, even during the pandemic, since the cars are so popular that there is always a good supply of everything available. Alfa Romeo is clearly a rare brand, but it's unfortunate that they don't treat their customers well. Once you've bought the car, it seems like you're on your own. I'm disappointed with my experience and I don't think I'll be buying another Alfa Romeo anytime soon. From now on, I'll stick with Lexus or Infiniti. #alfaromeosucks

  2. Logan Klocko 2024-07-11

My Stelvio experienced tire wear at 35k, lost quick pick up at 37k, and had interior plastic falling apart at 41k. However, my VW and BMW held together without any issues through 60k, and my VW is still running smoothly at 73k. Based on my experience, I would recommend considering other options before investing in a Stelvio.

  3. Johathan Huel 2024-06-16

In my professional opinion, this vehicle was rushed into production without proper validation and a poor level of component integration. I have experienced some engine management issues in the past 2 months, resulting in 4 visits to the dealership. Additionally, the vehicle has a tendency to go into a limp mode, which I find unsafe and almost caused a serious accident while merging onto a freeway with my grandkids in the back. As someone who has worked in the automotive industry for almost 30 years, I can confidently say that these issues need to be addressed for the safety of all drivers.

  4. Johnpaul Bogisich 2024-04-14

There seems to be a lot to discuss, from the dealership experience to the customer service provided by Alfa Romeo Corporate. Unfortunately, it seems that the cost is not worth it, and there have been issues with promises not being kept. It may not be worth driving far to any dealership. It's best to avoid purchasing in this situation.

  5. Lorenzo Nitzsche 2024-04-02

I've owned several top-end SUVs in the past, including the Volvo XC60, VW Eos, BMW X5, and RAV4. Unfortunately, my experience with the Stelvio was a bit disappointing. Just a month after taking delivery, the battery died. Although the battery was replaced, I was advised to lock the car when it was in the garage as something was draining the battery. Two months later, the new battery was flat again. I took the car to Alfa Service, but they couldn't find anything wrong. Additionally, the car developed an odd grinding noise in the rear wheels when reversing and straightening. As someone who values reliability, I decided to sell the car with only 7500 km on the clock and purchased a Peugeot 3008, which has been an absolute delight. I found the Alfa Service to be disinterested, and I noticed that the dealership in Brighton no longer sells Alfas.

  3. Austin Kling 2024-10-07

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share a quick story with you. This is actually my third attempt at telling it, so I hope I can get it right this time. Here goes:

  4. Alan Nienow 2024-08-12

This is my second Stelvio. The first one I had was a 2018 Ti Sport, which was a great vehicle with no major issues. I put 35k km on it. For this one, a 2021 model, make sure to check the fit and finish before signing. Unfortunately, the boat ride over caused some damage to the paint on our green 2021 Sport Ti. The stock stereo is just okay compared to the premium one, and there is no adaptive suspension option available for this year. While there are some interior improvements, there are also some disappointing ones. The optioning is a bit strange - there are no options available on the quad, but the Lusso (or whatever they call it now) has light interior options that are not available on the upper end versions like the Sport Ti. The console is a nice upgrade, but the rear camera is still small. However, it's not that bad, especially compared to the jag. The fender wells are lined with a felt that should be reserved for under the hood. I suspect this will not wear well and will keep moisture and mud. It also exposes electrical clips and suspension innards without cutouts inside the wheel well, which exposes what appears to be bare metal. Alfa is going back to its roots of oxidization. The good news is that the driving experience is great - this is a driver's SUV, and buyers will not care about the bells and gadgets in other brands. I recommend the Sport edition as you want the seats that are bolstered and have a manually extendable seat base, like the old BMWs. Compared to other brands like Audi, the interior may not be as impressive, but the driving experience more than makes up for it. Compared to BMW, the tech may lag a bit, but the driving experience is superior. Compared to American brands, it's much better. Compared to the base Porsche Macan, the Alfa is leagues ahead in terms of drivability. If you want a fun, very drivable, unique car that you just want to lease (I would not own any new car), this is the SUV to get. It's worth it to at least test drive it. In many cases, the Alfa dealership is located in Ferrari dealerships, and you get a nice level of service. The dealer fees (compared to Mercedes' $5000 CAD) are great, and the lease maintenance costs are very reasonable. The car is basically fully optioned, and I didn't feel the need to get the premium package with the better stereo and leather dash. It wasn't worth it to me, but I do miss the better sound.I often receive compliments and school kids frequently stare and wave at my car. It's a refreshing change from the multitude of A5's, X5's, CLA's and Macans out there. An update on the car: it has now covered 45k km and it's been great. The initial quality concerns have not played out. I highly recommend staggering the tires, as having 295's on the back provides so much more traction. For future buyers who want something different but higher end, I suggest taking a look at the Maserati Grecale. It's similar to the Stelvio, but the interior is done the way it should be. However, at the Moderna and Trofelo levels, you could get a used or new Quad. I still highly recommend this brand.

  5. Freeman Boyle 2024-08-07

I have been the proud owner of my 2019 Alfa Romeo Stelvio for four years now and I absolutely love this car! It never fails to bring a smile to my face whenever I see it, sit in it, or drive it. The 4-cylinder turbocharged engine boasts an impressive 280 horsepower and is 0.03 seconds faster 0 to 60 than my $70,000 2008 BMW 535XI. The car is fast, nimble, and has very quick steering, along with great Brembo brakes. What surprised me the most is how comfortable the Sport Seats are. Despite being in our late 70s, my partner and I can ride for four hours and get out and walk without any stiffness! I extended the 4-year warranty because of Alfa's reputation and it has been flawless with no problems. I would highly recommend this Alfa to anyone who enjoys driving.
