The Dodge Intrepid is a full-sized front-wheel drive four-door sedan that was produced by Dodge for the 1993 to 2004 model years. It is related to the Chrysler 300M, Chrysler Concorde, Chrysler LHS, Chrysler New Yorker, and Eagle Vision which were all built on Chrysler's new "cab forward" LH platform.

The Intrepid was sold in Canada as the Chrysler Intrepid. In the United States, it replaced the Dodge Monaco as Dodge's largest passenger car. With Dodge's introduction to Mexico during that time, it was badged as a Dodge, replacing the Dynasty which had been sold there under the Chrysler brand.

Background

The Intrepid's design goes back to 1986, when designer Kevin Verduyn completed the initial exterior design of a new aerodynamic concept sedan called Navajo. The design never passed the clay model stage. It was also at this time that the Chrysler Corporation purchased bankrupt Italian sports car manufacturer Lamborghini. The Navajo's exterior design was reworked and became the Lamborghini Portofino, released as a concept at the 1987 Frankfurt Auto Show. The Portofino was heralded as a design triumph, setting in motion Chrysler's decision to produce a production sedan with the Portofino's revolutionary exterior design, called "cab forward". The cab forward design was characterized by the long, low slung windshield, and relatively short overhangs. The wheels were effectively pushed to the corners of the car, creating a much larger passenger cabin than the contemporaries of the time.

Design of the chassis began in the late 1980s, after Chrysler had bought American Motors Corporation (AMC) in 1987. During this time, Chrysler began designing the replacement for the then-new Dodge Dynasty, which was a mid-size car. Initial proposals bore resemblance to the Dynasty, but this design approach was scrapped entirely in 1988 by François Castaing, the former AMC Vice President of product engineering and development. As AMC was purchased by Chrysler, Castaing became new Vice President for Vehicle Engineering for the new company. The acquiring automaker was in desperate need of replicating the AMC and Renault corporate culture where work was conducted in an atmosphere "of constant change". Castaing organized Chrysler's departments into AMC-style cross-function teams, as well as incorporated the use of simultaneous engineering. Moreover, the new vehicle's design, under Castaing's leadership, began with the Eagle Premier platform.

The Premier's longitudinal engine mounting layout was inherited, as was the front suspension geometry, and parts of the braking system. The chassis itself became a flexible architecture capable of supporting front or rear-wheel drive (designated "LH" and "LX" respectively). The chassis design was continually refined throughout the following years, as it underpinned more Chrysler prototypes: the 1989 Chrysler Millennium and 1990 Eagle Optima. The transmission was inspired by the Premier's Audi and ZF automatics. Borrowing heavily from Chrysler's A604 (41TE) "Ultradrive" transversely mounted automatic, it became the A606 (also known as 42LE).The initial standard 3.3 L pushrod V6 engine was joined in 1990 with a 3.5 L SOHC engine with four valves per cylinder. For the second generation Intrepid R/T the block was recast in aluminum as part of a comprehensive upgrade.

Common 1998 Dodge Intrepid problems

The Dodge Intrepid, produced from 1993 to 2004, is known for several common problems, particularly in the engine and transmission categories.

  • Dashboard Cracks: Another common issue with the Dodge Intrepid is cracked dashboards, which can be found in both generations of the vehicle. The dashboard may fall apart and break into pieces, with cracks growing bigger over time.
  • Stuck in Park: Some Dodge Intrepid owners have reported being unable to shift the car into reverse or drive, a problem that is also common in other Dodge, Chrysler, and Jeep vehicles.
  • Electrical Issues: The Dodge Intrepid has experienced electrical problems, including dashboard lights that do not function properly. The first generation of the Intrepid received below-average ratings for dashboard lights, while the second generation was rated as having chronic reliability issues in this area .

In summary, the Dodge Intrepid is known for engine problems, particularly oil sludge buildup, transmission issues, dashboard cracks, being stuck in park, and electrical problems. These issues have contributed to the Intrepid's reputation for lower reliability compared to other full-size vehicles from the same time period

Negative 1998 Dodge Intrepid car reviews

  1. August Rowe 2025-01-26

Hi there! Thank you for sharing your experience with us. We purchased our Intrepid back in '98 with only 26k miles on it. Since our family lives out of state, we tend to put a lot of miles on our vehicles. Unfortunately, we did experience some strange problems with this car, including the tensioner going out at 70k, the starter at 36k, the oil sending unit wiring harness at 96k, and the AC condenser and cooling fan motor at 99k. Two weeks ago, at 102k, the engine caught fire in our driveway, and our insurance has deemed it a total loss. After all the issues we've had, we must admit that we weren't surprised by the spontaneous combustion and are quietly relieved to be free of this car. Both of us come from Chrysler product families, but we have decided that we will not be purchasing another one. This one nearly cost us our home. Thank you for listening to our story.

  2. Cloyd Welch 2025-01-07

We initially signed up for a five-year lease, but unfortunately, we wanted a three-year lease instead. The car was amazing for the first three and a half years, but since then, we've had some major problems. Thankfully, we have an extended warranty that has helped us out. Unfortunately, the car has been on a flatbed at least twice a year due to these issues. Recently, the car was at the dealership for two weeks while a part was on back order. Currently, my car is at the dealership, and they are charging me $275 for a bad battery and terminal, which isn't covered under the warranty. It's disappointing to see that the Intrepid is listed by Consumer Reports as one of the worst cars to buy used, but we're doing our best to make the most of it.

  3. Efren Cruickshank 2024-11-10

Oh no! It sounds like you had a really tough time with your car. The oil light came on the same day you bought it, and then you had to replace the transmission and alternator/power steering pulley within the next two months. It's understandable that you wouldn't want to buy another car like that or even accept one if it was given to you.

  4. Marcos Harvey 2024-10-16

I must say, my 98 white Intrepid ES is a real beauty. It's unfortunate that I've had to take it to the dealership for repairs one too many times. The brakes have been the most troublesome and I've noticed that the plastic quality inside the car is poor and coming off. Another issue, not related to the car, is the dealership service. It's been quite disappointing! I've tried three or four closest to my neighbourhood and they are all terrible. Times like this make me wish I had bought a Lexus. Would I buy this car again? Maybe not. For the money, I think I'd rather buy a used Audi A8.

  5. Moriah Bednar 2024-04-08

Our 98 Dodge Intrepid with 66,000 miles recently experienced engine failure, which was quite unfortunate. We had purchased it for $10,000 a year ago, and now it seems we may only be able to sell it for $2000. The cost to replace the engine is estimated to be between $5000-$7500. Despite this setback, we have always ensured that the car received regular maintenance and oil changes, and even ran a CarFax report which showed no prior issues. While the Dodge Intrepid certainly receives a high rating of '9' for its looks, we have unfortunately found it to be lacking in overall reliability. Interestingly, we have come across a 99 model with the same engine and issue in the trading post. We hope to find a solution soon and appreciate any advice or recommendations.

Positive 1998 Dodge Intrepid car reviews

Hi there! I just wanted to share my experience with my car that I bought brand new in early 1998. I have to say, it has exceeded my expectations! It's so solidly built, comfortable, and reliable. I've never had to repair any of its major components. All I ever do is change the oil and filter every 3,000 miles and do all other normal maintenance as needed (tires, fluids, etc).

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with my Dodge/Chrysler vehicle. I purchased it less than two years ago with 60k on it and have put on nearly 40k miles since then. I'm happy to report that I haven't had any major problems with it at all! I've just performed regular maintenance items like changing the oil, oil filter, and putting in a K&N drop-in air filter. I also changed the rotors, pads, and tires, and put in new plugs when I bought the car. The trunk is huge and can easily accommodate luggage for a week for 4-5 adults, and the Auto-Stick feature is great on the ES model. The extra HP in the ES over the base model really gives the car more kick. Overall, I'm really happy with my purchase from Dodge/Chrysler!

This car has been a reliable companion for seven years, thanks to the use of synthetic oil and transmission fluid. It's worth noting that following the recommended oil change schedule is crucial to avoid problems with this vehicle. Normal oil should be changed more frequently than the suggested 7000 miles to prevent sludge buildup. However, with synthetic oil, I had no issues with sludge buildup. Overall, the car still looks great and runs at a reasonable speed.

For what it is, the Dodge Intrepid is a great car. It has more room than anything else in its price range and looks very sporty for a family car. The gas mileage is good and I have had no problems at all with it mechanically in the 15 months I have owned it.

  5. Alex Wolff 2024-11-08

I had this car for 2 years. While the car was running, I loved it. However, after the first 6 months, it started having problems. Unfortunately, these problems continued to occur. I bought this car for $3000 and ended up spending an additional $3000-5000 on repairs. Eventually, the head gasket went and I decided to move on. I got a 2000 Mustang and I absolutely love it! This car looks great and is very comfortable. When it ran, it had nice power, especially on the 3.2 engine. I love the looks and size of the car, as I prefer bigger cars. However, I just had too many problems with this one.
