2011 Hyundai Santa fe problems
The Hyundai Santa Fe (Korean: 현대 싼타페) is an automobile produced by the South Korean manufacturer Hyundai since 2000. It is a five-door crossover SUV that either has front-wheel drive or four-wheel drive. It is named after the city of Santa Fe, New Mexico, and was introduced for the 2001 model year as Hyundai's first SUV. The Santa Fe was a milestone in the company's restructuring program of the late 1990s because the SUV was a hit with American buyers. Between 2006 and 2012, the Santa Fe was positioned between the smaller Tucson compact crossover and the larger Veracruz.
The third-generation Santa Fe introduced in 2012 was available in two versions, which are regular (short) and extended long-wheelbase version. The short model was sold as the Santa Fe Sport in North America (three-row seating was not available) and simply Santa Fe in global markets (three-row seating was standard or optional), while the extended long-wheelbase model is called the Santa Fe in the US, Santa Fe XL in Canada and called the Hyundai Maxcruz in South Korea. The fifth and current generation was released in 2023 and omits diesel engines in favor of petrol hybrid powertrains.
As of 2022, the Santa Fe is positioned between the smaller Tucson – which the Santa Fe shares platform with – and the larger Palisade in Hyundai's global crossover SUV line-up.

ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-09-12
- VIN: 5XYZK4AG5BG
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: I was driving the car on a 4 lane road when suddenly the engine shut off and the car was no longer functioning. I lost power steering and had to coast into a nearby parking lot, otherwise I would have caused a major accident in the middle of a busy intersection with another 4 lane road. Upon taking the car to Hyundai for evaluation, it was declared to be total engine failure. Given the other issues with Hyundai engines failing and the fact that I VERY NARROWLY AVOIDED A MASSIVE COLLISION, I would like NHTSA to be aware that this problem may go back farther than Hyundai has addressed so far.

- Crash: 1
- VIN: 5XYZK4AG8BG
- Components: AIR BAGS,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
- Summary: I pulled up into my grandma's driveway, put the car in park. The car continued moving forward and when I depressed the brake pedal, the car accelerated for some unknown reason. So I put both feet on the brake and it still continued to accelerate. My car crashed into my grandparents garage door, then into their car, then pushed their car into their washer and dryer, causing those appliances to push against the wall, breaking the structure, busting water lines, smashing the washer and causing damage.

ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-09-17
- VIN: 5XYZKDAGXBG
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: My 2011 Hyundai Santa Fe had 75,000 miles on it in September 2022. It was bought and serviced by the same dealership and I am the original owner. It was last serviced at the end of June 2022. While returning from Corvallis, Oregon to Forest Grove, Oregon, the car's display light all turned on and a second late the car completely stopped. I am thankful that I decided to take the back road home, if I had been on the highway, I am positive I would have been in a serious accident. It has been determined by the dealership that there was a complete engine failure. It has been at the Hyundai dealership for four months now and there is no replacement engine available for it. Not only that, they can't get a reasonably priced replacement engine anywhere. This car would have been a valuable trade in on a new car. The Diagnosis was Engine crankshaft seized. Metal particles on Dipstick, large metal fragments on oil filter, Engine replacement required. The car is now worthless, expect for parts.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-10-04
- Crash: 1
- VIN: 5XYZH4AG9BG
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: The brakes on this Santa Fe have produced some unexplainable issues? A complete brake job was done approximately six months ago by a reputable brake shop because of similar issues with the brakes that occurred again last week and yesterday. Additionally, all fluids were normal during routine oil change and fluid check on Aug 13th. Last week while backing up the normal brake would not stop the vehicle and the car was stopped by using the emergency brake. On Oct 4, 2021 the brakes did not work causing the Santa Fe to "rear-end" another car at a red light. Speed was approximately 35-40 mph. Air bag deployed and no one was seriously hurt in the accident. Problem has not been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer; just a complete brake job 6 months ago by a brake shop. Vehicle is now at the tow facility awaiting the inspection by insurance company and can be inspected by anyone interested in doing so. There were no warning lamps or messages of the problem prior to failure. Additionally, this car's blinkers have randomly stopped working with no notice and just randomly started working again after a period of time. Emergency flashers worked but not the normal blinkers during this malfunction. This vehicle definitely has some Gremlins!! It's unknown why this model Santa Fe has produced a similar problems as other Santa Fe's with no recalls on this particular model or VIN # ?

2011 Hyundai Santa fe recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 3 recalls for different components of the 2011 Hyundai Santa fe.
- Manufacturer: Hyundai Motor Company
- Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING:BRAKE LIGHTS:SWITCH
- Summary: Hyundai Motor Company (Hyundai) is recalling certain model year 2006-2009 Accent, model year 2007-2011 Azera, Sonata and Sante Fe,2006-2011 Tucson, 2009-2011 Elantra Touring, 2007-2010 Elantra, 2008-2011 Veracruz, 2009-2011 Genesis, 2010-2011 Genesis Coupe, 2007-2008 Entourage, and 2006-2008 Tiburon vehicles. Originally, in April 2013, Hyundai recalled 1,059,824 model year 2007-2009 Accent and Tucson, model year 2007-2010 Elantra, model year 2007-2011 Santa Fe, model year 2008-2009 Veracruz, model year 2010-2011 Genesis Coupe, and model year 2011 Sonata vehicles. In September 2013, Hyundai informed the agency that it was adding more vehicles to this campaign, representing an additional 652,512 units. The total number of vehicles being recalled is now 1,712,336. In the affected vehicles, the stop lamp switch may malfunction. A malfunctioning stop lamp switch may cause the brake lights to not illuminate when the brake pedal is depressed or may cause an inability to deactivate the cruise control by depressing the brake pedal. Additionally, a malfunctioning stop lamp switch may also result in intermittent operation of the push-button start feature, affect the operation of the brake transmission shift interlock feature, preventing the shifter from being moved out of the PARK position and cause the Electronic Stability Control (ESC) malfunction light to illuminate.
- Consequence: Failure to illuminate the stop lamps during braking or inability to disengage the cruise control could increase the risk of a crash. Additionally, when the ignition is in the 'ON' position, the transmission shifter may be able to be moved out of Park without first applying the brake. This may lead to unintentional movement of the car which may increase the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: Hyundai will notify owners, and dealers will replace the stop lamp switch, free of charge. The safety recall began on April 22, 2013. Owners may contact Hyundai at 1-800-633-5151. Hyundai's recall campaign number is 110.

I've been a reader of Edmunds for years, so it's time for me to give back. I just bought my first new car, a 2011 Santa FE AWD SE! Coming from an old Accord 4 cyl, I think the exterior looks great and the overall features for the given price are nice. The acceleration is responsive and I'm happy with the 22 combined mpg. However, the interior is just alright and the drive isn't as nimble as I expected. It's not a BMW, but I did expect the suspension to be tighter (it's too bouncy for me). On the bright side, the car comes with Bluetooth, V6, AWD, auto-dimming mirrors, heated seats, roof rack + cross rails, steptronic transmission, warranty, fog lights, and driver power seats. I've only driven 80 miles so far, but I'll write back again after 500 miles!
-
It seems like the steering is a bit too sensitive, especially when accelerating. It almost feels like driving on ice.

I'm so glad to hear that you're enjoying your new SUV! It sounds like you made a great choice with the black Limited and black leather. I completely agree that it stands out from other SUVs like the Rav4 and CR-V. The attention you received while parked next to a black 11' Highlander Limited is a testament to that. The cabin sounds like a dream with plush and luxurious features, and the woodgrain trim is stunning. The navigation and 12-speaker sound system sound like great additions. It's great to hear that the V6 engine is powerful, but also that it's not too big or too small. It sounds like the perfect fit for you!
-
So far, you have a great vehicle! It runs smoothly, everything works, and it handles very well.

I'm a tall dude at 6'6

During a three-week period when my Volkswagen GTI was being repaired after an accident, I had the opportunity to drive a Santa Fe rental car. As someone who generally prefers small cars and is not a fan of SUVs, I should note that this was not my first choice. While there was nothing particularly negative about the Santa Fe, it didn't leave a lasting impression on me and lacked any standout features. In my opinion, the Tucson is a better option due to its smaller size, lower cost, and superior interior and exterior design.

Let's just get right to it. There's a terrible metal noise in the back door. The dealer claims this is normal, but to me and everyone else, it sounds like a poorly welded joint between panels. Also, there's a terrible squeaking noise in my driver's seat that sounds like a broken bed spring. Again, the dealer claims this is normal. And what about the loud humming noise from the stereo system? Once again, the dealer said this is normal. I'm disappointed with the lack of help from Hyundai customer service. The dealer claims that the car is up to spec, but we value what our dealer tells us? What a shame. I've only driven 2300 miles, and it could have been a good value for the money. I guess I'll look to trade my car in. It's my loss, but I hope to gain a quality car this time, like a Honda.

I drove the car for 3 weeks and unfortunately, I found it to be quite noisy. Every bump on the road was audible and could be felt. Additionally, the 4 cylinder engine seemed to struggle with acceleration, taking a second or two to respond when the accelerator was pressed. The handling at speed was also a bit imprecise, and the car could be affected by windy conditions. I had previously owned the v6 model and found it to be much better. If you are considering purchasing this car, I would highly recommend taking it for a test drive on the expressway with the radio off to listen for any noise. It's worth noting that no two Santa Fe's ride the same, so you may find one that is actually quiet. Unfortunately, this particular car was quite noisy, with obtrusive tire noise and road noise that was transmitted into the vehicle.

I recently traded my 08 Nissan Rogue, which had a myriad of problems, for an 11 Santa Fe. So far, it's been okay. We ended up going for the V6 SE FWD since that was all that was available at the time. Although we would have preferred the AWD since we live in the Midwest with unpredictable winter weather, we're hoping for the best. The gas mileage has been the best thing so far, as we're getting 23mpg combined average, which is better than the Rogue. The car drives okay, nothing to rave about, but not terrible either. The driver's seat is a little uncomfortable, even though it's power adjustable, neither my husband nor I can get comfortable in it yet. We're hoping it's just because it's new and will soften up a bit.

I'm disappointed with the Santa Fe I bought. I'm only 21 and I bought myself a brand new vehicle, but unfortunately, the sunroof broke with less than 4000km on it. The nearest Hyundai dealership is 4 hours away from where I live, and they told me that I couldn't get it fixed by any local mechanics. As a result, I had to spend a lot of money travelling almost every other week to try and get it fixed, and all this money is coming out of my pocket. Additionally, the vehicle starts to vibrate like crazy on the highway when I'm driving at about 120km/hr. I'm disappointed with my experience with Hyundai, and I think I'll stick with Toyota from now on.
