2016 Chevrolet Cruze problems

chevrolet logo

The Chevrolet Cruze is a compact car that has been produced by General Motors since 2008. It was designated as a globally developed, designed, and manufactured four-door compact sedan, complemented by a five-door hatchback body variant from 2011, and a station wagon in 2012. During its introduction, the Cruze replaces several compact models, including the Chevrolet Optra which was sold internationally under various names, the Chevrolet Cobalt sold exclusively in North America, and the Australasian-market Holden Astra.

The Cruze was released in 2008 for the South Korean market as the Daewoo Lacetti Premiere until the phasing out of the Daewoo brand in 2011, when it was renamed to Chevrolet Cruze. In Australasia, the model was sold between 2009 and 2016 as the Holden Cruze. In 2016, the Cruze sedan was restyled and renamed for the Australasian market as the Holden Astra Sedan, as a sedan complement to the Holden Astra family.

Due to the market shift towards SUVs and decreasing sales, the Cruze has been gradually phased out. Production of the Cruze in South Korea ended in 2018 as part of restructuring of GM Korea, which in turn ceased supply of the Holden Astra Sedan to Australasia. In the United States and Mexico, production ended in 2019, while production in China ended in 2020. Production continued in Argentina until 2023. It was replaced by the Monza in China, which is known as the Cavalier in Mexico.

Previously, the nameplate has been used for a version of a subcompact hatchback car produced under a joint venture with Suzuki from 2001 to 2007, and was based on the Suzuki Ignis.

These electrical issues have left some owners unable to operate their cars effectively.
  • Transmission Failures: The 2011-2014 Chevy Cruze models have been associated with transmission issues, with reports of the transmission failing to shift correctly. The 2011 model year, in particular, has seen a high number of transmission failures, often requiring replacements. Transmission problems have been a significant concern for owners of these model years.
  • Other Potential Problems: Additional issues that have been mentioned include torque converter problems, head gasket issues, and potential overheating concerns. These problems, if left unaddressed, can lead to costly repairs and impact the overall performance and safety of the vehicle.

  • VIN: 1G1PE5SB3G7
  • Components: WHEELS,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: Purchased a 2016 Chevrolet Cruze on [XXX]. [XXX]. As of July 26th I paid $862 on repairs for the car to be smoking this morning on my way to work [XXX]. In total I’ve spent Almost or close to $2,000 in car repairs. This purchase was for my 17 year old daughter as a graduation present and for college. She was driving and car started to run hot and cut off in a busy intersection. She was unable to take the car to North Carolina. The owner blocked me and the staff haven’t been accommodating since this process. Nor will they look at the car. This has put me in a financial burden and the safety conditions this vehicle is under. And damage this could have cause my daughter. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

WHEELS,ENGINE,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-11
  • VIN: 1G1BE5SM0G7
  • Components: WHEELS,ENGINE,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: I HAVE A 2016 CHEVROLET CRUZE AND THE TURBOCHARGER INTERCOOLER HOSE BASICALLY BROKE FROM WHERE THE END OF THE HOSE STARTS AND A LITTLE BIT DOWN IN THE MIDDLE AREA OF THE END PART OF THE HOSE. AND THIS CAUSED MY ENGINE'S POWER TO BE REDUCED INMENSLY. TO THE POINT THAT I HAD MY FOOT PRESSING ALL THE WAY DOWN ON THE ACCELERATOR AND IT COULD NOT GO ANY FURTHER DOWN, AND MY CAR WAS MOVING SLOWER THAN A TURTLE, AND THIS IS NOT AN EXAGGERATION! AND ALSO, AT TIMES WHEN I HAVE BEEN AT A RED LIGHT MY CAR TURNS OFF. ONE TIME MY CAR TURNED OFF WHILE I WAS DRIVING ON THE STREET WITH CARS BEHIND ME. LUCKILY, I WAS ABLE TO PULL INTO A SHOPPING CENTER. AND THE AIR CONDITIONER IS ALSO FAILING BECAUSE I KEEP PUTTING FREE ON SO IT CAN BE COLDER AND ALL THAT COMES OUT IS HOT AIR. I DID NOT KNOW THAT THIS INTERCOOLER HOSE WAS A MAJOR PART OF MY VEHICLE'S FUNCTION. ALSO, THE TRACTION LIGHT CAME ON, WHEN I ALREADY HAD IT OFF. IF CHEVROLET CRUZE OWNERS DO NOT KNOW ABOUT THIS ISSUE, THEY NEED TO KNOW. BECAUSE THIS ISSUE COULD EVENTUALLY MESS UP THE ENTIRE MOTOR AND POSSIBLE BLOW IT OUT. WHICH WE ALL KNOW A NEW MOTOR IS VERY EXPENSIVE

They refused to provide service, falsely claimed that I refused diagnostic, misdiagnosed the vehicle, replaced the wrong part, and were extremely rude and misogynistic. Additionally, they claim the issues were pre-existing while lacking any evidence. As a result, the vehicle now needs $6,400 in repairs, and neither GM nor Defouw will compensate us. Additionally, we have incurred $1,000 in towing costs, among other expenses.

WHEELS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-06-22
  • Number Of Injuries: 2
  • VIN: 1G1PE5SB3G7
  • Components: WHEELS
  • Summary: On [XXX], the right front passenger side control arm/ball joint broke as my daughters were driving home. The car was in motion on a major street in Kansas City, KS when the control arm/ball joint broke. My daughter was in the right-hand lane when it broke as the car was in motion. The front of the car forcefully propelled in the air, landed, and jerked my daughter into the side walk. Afterwards, she fought the car over to the left-hand turn lane to stop in a somewhat safer spot on a major street. My oldest daughter driving suffered neck injuries from the seatbelt and my youngest daughter bumped her head. Both were hurt. An independent mechanic diagnosed the issue as well as Hendrick Chevrolet in Shawnee Mission Kansas. The parts are available for inspection. Hendrick Chevrolet failed to properly diagnose this issue when my car was in their care and service department on 06/14/24. I paid for an inspection but Hendrick Chevrolet's technician failed to record play in the broken wheel and if the car was in need of an alignment. This is unacceptable behavior considering the technician had both front tires off to inspect the brakes and was paid to perform a complete inspection on my car as described in Chevy's inspection literature provided by the dealership. He also provided an incorrect brake pad measurement. Through several Chevrolet/Chevy Cruze online forums, Cruze owners have asked several questions and recorded several comments regarding having a broken control arm and having to replace the ball joint bolt. Also, recalls were previously issued with other GM vehicles having a right-front passenger side defective control arm, which potentially could be a GM fabrication issue with control arms. No warning lamps, noises, or messages alerted to this issue. This would have been a fatal incident involving my daughters and other drivers if it occurred on the highway at a higher rate of speed. • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,STRUCTURE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: Water leak in trunk. Took car in 3 time to have it fixed after them doing the recall( 84279073 f-lamp kit). Every time it went in they found a leak in a different spot. 15Feb17 they found water leaking from right side of the spoiler retainer holes. Dealer removed spoiler applied double back tape and sealer. Reinstalled spoiler 02Mar17 found pin hole leak in weather strip. Dealer replaced weather strip. 01jan24 start having electrical issues. Hard starting/ running weird and finally dead battery. Had les swabs install battery and remove water in trunk. Car starts but shuts off when driving. 05mar24 Dealer finds leak coming from right side spoiler and now 1 licence plat bolt. Charged me 600.00 . to reseal. Here we go again They could never stop/find the leak before and will not warranty previous work. Isn't this a fire/safty issue? That started the recall in the 1st place. And why wasn't drain plugs required for this yr.car. I believe it was in the newer one. I would like to know how many people had to take their car in multiple times to never have the problem truly fixed. Is this a tactic used to make consumers go away and say they fixed the recall, but never really did.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-08-10
  • VIN: 1G1PG5SB5G7
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: My vehicle gives the message "shift to park" even when it placed in park, making it impossible to lock and possibly causing the battery to run down. Continuing to restart the vehicle and placing in park until the message goes away has been my only resolution. The issue has been reproduced by an independent service center. They were unable to ascertain what was causing the issue. I am aware a recall was issued for this problem in earlier model Chevy Cruzes. It seems my vehicle should have also been included in this recall. It is evident this has been a huge problems in GM vehicles and when it continues to affect later vehicles it should be addressed and corrected by the company.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2019-07-19
  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: 1G1BE5SM1G7
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE
  • Summary: At first, and only on cold/rainy/snowy weather, while driving the radio would randomly turn off and turn itself back on (i have videos of this). Sometimes it would last a few seconds, sometimes a few minutes. While this was happening, the blinker sounds wouldn't work. I brought it to Chevy in Geneva, NY for diagnostics. No check engine codes ever. They told me that the radio computer needed to be updated. I had them fix it, only to find out that the problem would still happen. Over a few months, it developed more symptoms. It started to not shut off when I pushed the button, and it also started stalling when it went into auto off, but would turn back on if I put it in park and re started. At first it would stall in auto off at random times. This caused an accident in the summer of 2019. I was at a stop sign, waiting to make a right hand turn, took my foot off the brake and car stalled. The car behind me thought I was going and rear ended me. I had to drive around in the summer with the heat on, as it was the only way to prevent the car from going into auto off. I had the car looked at a few more times after that (paying $100 diagnostic fees every time). Brought it back to chevy and the told me it was because of the damage to my trunk allowing water to get to the battery (it wasn't). Issues then turned into stalling at auto off, but not turning back on once in park. I brought it to the dealership I bought it from and they looked at the alternator and had them clean all battery terminals and replace the battery. This worked for 2 weeks before continuing. It got to the point that I had to jump start my car everytime I wanted to drive it or it stalled. Finally it just wouldnt start, So i had it towed to chevy again in 2021. They determined the issue was the starter and replaced. It worked but as of now (9/13/23) my car has began stalling at auto off. It is very dangerous, car gives no warning!! There is too much to say with limited space

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-08-05
  • VIN: 1G1PC5SH4G7
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: There is currently a recall for Chevrolet Cruzes because of overheating, that is caused by the cooling system and the antifreeze leaking out at the thermostat housing. This is exactly what happened to my 2016 Cruze as we drove down the highway and warning lights and sounds started going off that required it to be put in the shop (Local Chevy Dealer) and have these parts replaced. If you read the safety recall for this issue on the Chevy Cruze and look at my receipt it is almost the same wording. However, the dealer told me that my Chevy Cruze was NOT covered by the recall. I believe the recall should be expanded to include all Cruzes.

Negative 2016 Chevrolet Cruze car reviews

It's important to do your research before purchasing a car. While my son's experience with his 2016 Chevy Cruze has been less than ideal, it's important to note that every car brand has its own set of issues. In our case, the car has experienced several computer malfunctions and breakdowns, which have been frustrating. However, it's important to remember that every car has its own unique set of problems. It's always a good idea to consider a variety of brands and models before making a decision. Personally, I have had good experiences with Toyota and would recommend them. Ultimately, it's important to find a car that fits your needs and budget.

The car has had some issues with the auto stop feature and Oxygen Sensor, resulting in a few recalls. However, I am confident in the car's overall performance and reliability. Despite a few setbacks, I appreciate the convenience of the Remote Start feature, especially during the cold Ohio weather. I am satisfied with my decision to lease this car and would consider leasing it again in the future.

I had the opportunity to drive a 2016 Cruze LT as a rental for two-and-a-half days while my 2014 Civic was getting a minor bumper repair. Although I had some challenges with the car, I appreciate the backup camera and audio display. However, I found the car to be uncomfortable due to limited headroom and an awkward interior layout. Additionally, the stop/start feature was a bit annoying and the car lacked power. The driver's window did not have an 'express up' feature and the controls for the outside mirrors were not within reach. The radio also did not turn off when I turned off the ignition, which was a bit inconvenient. Overall, I believe that there is room for improvement in the design of this car. However, I was grateful to return to my Civic and appreciate Honda engineering even more after my experience with the Cruze. It's been a couple of weeks and I still recall my experience, but I am glad that I had the opportunity to try something new.

It seems that the automotive industry is moving towards electronic power steering. While some claim that this is due to an improvement in fuel economy, I believe that the real reason is cost savings from eliminating mechanical and hydraulic linkages. However, in my experience, these systems are not yet fully developed and may pose safety risks. For example, Toyota had issues with electronic power steering in the previous production run of the Corolla. I have test driven several cars with electronic power steering, including the Ford and Chevy models, and have found them to be less stable than traditional steering systems. The new Cruze, in particular, feels unstable and lacks security, especially at high speeds. This could be a concern in emergency situations, such as avoiding a distracted driver. In comparison, the 2016 Corolla and Civic feel much more secure. It is important for car manufacturers to prioritize safety and stability when implementing new technologies. However, when compared to a car with standard power steering, all of them fail in this respect. The Cruze had more power and better acceleration than the Corolla, but less than the Civic. Unfortunately, visibility is poor, making merging or changing lanes a bit of a challenge. The rear window is narrow and radically slanted, reducing visibility and disconnecting you from the road further. In the Premier model, the interior was plush, upscale, and nicely appointed. Chevy's put in a lot of effort to reduce harshness, noise, and vibration, so you have a real sense of a luxury-type interior. By comparison, the Corolla's a spartan econo-box, and even the new, improved Civic falls short of the Cruze Premier. The next step down LT has less of the sense of luxury, and more plastic presence, but the quietness and sense of refinement remain. Besides the steering instability, the ride itself is pleasantly smooth. The Corolla is significantly harsher and more jarring. The Civic is better than the Corolla, but still a distance in this respect from the Cruze. It's worth noting that the car battery is located inside the passenger compartment of the car, specifically, right under the rear seat. The justification for this is that the battery won't be subjected to extremes of engine compartment heat and hard, freezing cold. All of that may be true, but it's important to consider the potential for exploding batteries.Additionally, it seems that unless the engineers have come up with a different solution (which is unlikely with American car makers), the electric cables will have to run under the car from back to front. This means that the cables will be exposed to water, salt, snow, and everything else that the underbody of a car is exposed to. Although the car reviewers haven't mentioned the issue of steering stability (they mostly only say good things about every car they test and rarely address issues such as reliability), and the public hasn't made any complaints, it's unlikely that GM will make any positive improvements to their electronic power steering designs any time soon. However, I previously drove a 2015 Cruze Premier, and the steering had many of the same issues as the new model does, but not as much. It seemed a bit more stable. With the new model having even more insecure steering than the one it replaces, it seems clear that GM's attention is focused elsewhere.

Hey there! I just wanted to share my personal experience with this car. My wife and I have owned it for quite some time now, and we've put over 150,000 miles on it. Overall, it's a really nice looking car that handles well and is quite comfortable. At first, the start/stop feature took some getting used to, but it wasn't a big problem. However, we did experience some issues early on with a noise when accelerating uphill or around curves. We took it to the technician, but they couldn't find anything wrong. Despite this, we continued to drive it and changed the oil regularly. Unfortunately, we did encounter some more serious issues once the warranty was up. We had to pay $550 just to be told it was a vacuum leak, and then the brake assist started failing. We also had problems with a variety of sensors, and it was difficult to pinpoint the exact cause of the issues. We even reached out to General Motors, but they couldn't provide any answers. Despite all of this, the car still runs and drives, but we're just waiting for it to die. If you're looking for a car that will last you 10 years, this might not be the best choice for you. Thanks for reading!

I think this car is perfect, I have no complaints. It handles the snow better than my AWD. I average 39mpg, with 80% highway and 20% city driving. You just have to know how to drive.

Starting at the right dealership is crucial, and I was fortunate to have Matt Artus as my salesman. He was incredibly friendly, answered all my questions, and worked with me to get a great deal. The rest of the staff at the dealership was also very welcoming and made me feel at home. Having worked at a dealership for 7 years, I can tell the difference between genuine and just wanting the sale, and this dealership definitely falls into the former category. I purchased a 2016 Chevy Cruse LT and I absolutely love it. The only thing I didn't like about the vehicle was the silver hub caps, but the staff was more than happy to switch them to black for me with no problems. The car drives great and the gas mileage is awesome. If you don't live nearby, it's definitely worth the drive to this dealership.

  3. Edward Ruecker 2024-09-17

I purchased my Cruze 8 months ago when it had 83,XXX miles on it. Now, it's almost at 103,XXX miles. It's an LT model with the RS package and I must say, it's been a great investment. The fuel mileage is amazing, especially on my short 55mph commutes to work where I average about 50-55mpg. The sweet spot for this car is definitely 55-60mph. I opted for the 6-speed manual transmission and it's been a solid choice. Although 1st gear is a little too low for my liking, it accelerates from 0 just fine. The manual transmission does not have the start/stop option, which is a relief. Running at 80mph, it sits at about 2500rpm and is still pretty efficient. I've even pushed it to 136mph before I gave up (not recommended). It's a great car for passing and getting up to speed quickly. I've had no issues with it since I got it, and I take very good care of it. The black paint option is also very good looking when it's cleaned and shined. The functionality of the vehicle is pretty solid, and the infotainment system is everything you need while still remaining basic enough to learn how to operate it pretty quickly. The cluster tells me everything I need to know about the car and has all kinds of tools to use. The heater and A/C work really well, and the legroom in every seat is great. The only downside is that the seats don't have lumbar support, which can be uncomfortable for long road trips, especially if you have back pain like me. Overall, it's been a great car for me and hasn't given me any trouble. I would highly recommend it for a college student or anyone who commutes mid-distance to work. It's a good ride for the money.

  5. Merle Hansen 2024-08-17

I have my Cruze LT 2016 and after 7 years, it's still a great car with no issues. When I first bought the Cruze, I was worried about potential transmission or engine problems due to the auto stop feature, but it actually saves gas! It's very economical and I've only had to change the brakes once.
