The Pontiac Grand Am is a car model that was produced by Pontiac in various years between 1973 and 2005. Produced as a RWD mid-size car on the LeMans GM A platform in its first two generations, the Grand Am name was reused for a FWD compact car for its last three generations.
The platform actually began development intended to be the next generation GTO, but the muscle car era was drawing to a close. So, Pontiac decided to make this model America's answer to European luxury|sports sedans. The Grand Am (GA) name was derived from two other Pontiacs; "Grand" signifying Grand Prix luxury, and "Am" for Trans Am performance.
These first generation GAs had some innovative features, including a deformable urethane nose (an evolution of the Endura bumper pioneered on the 1968 GTO), and was one of only three GM cars (Olds Cutlass Salon, Chevy Monte Carlo S) to debut radial-ply tires (RTS - Radial Tuned Suspension) as standard equipment. The intermediate sized Grand Am was canceled in 1980 when it was replaced by the Pontiac 6000.
A compact-sized Grand Am, based on the GM N-platform, was released in 1985, replacing the Pontiac Phoenix. It became Pontiac's best selling car and was later replaced by the Pontiac G6, so named as it was intended to be the 6th generation of the Grand Am.
All 1973–1975 Grand Ams were built in Pontiac, Michigan at Pontiac's main assembly plant. The 1978-1980 Grand Ams were built in Pontiac, Michigan at Pontiac's main assembly plant and in Atlanta, Georgia at GMAD Lakewood. All Grand Ams between 1985 and 2005 were built in Lansing, Michigan at the Lansing Car Assembly.

GM offers an official kit which can be converted into 2.2 supercharged versions using modified ECM software. Model L42 is an CNG version of the Ecotec 2.2, producing 129 hp and 129 ft⋅lb. This LSJ was listed as one of Ward's 10 Best Engines in 2006! Sealed transmissions elude fluid access to function like regular transmission systems without requiring fluid changes for maintenance. A sealed transmission has fill and inspection plugs, with the inspection plug removing excess fluid and the fill plug adding fluid. Nobody told me during my tenure in ‘shop class!’ Knorr’s Automotive wants $55Ø to fix an exhaust leak, which is their disastrous mishandling. - Summary: Body, Brakes, and Electrical concern me. My family owned a 1999 same model vehicle, and the brakes failed us in an accident from its’ left driver seal being punctured. Here is what’s going on with the 2003 aside from the latter mentioned. Exhaust from manifold to catalytic converter followed by muffler rusted out by 175,ØØØ miles and now broke apart. Frame and rocker panels are rusted out before 175,ØØØ miles and broke apart by rear wheels on both sides. Electrical concerns caused me to quit my job on March 11, 2022 when the wipers quit working and nearly caused an accident by Chartiers Cemetery in a thunderstorm storm two days before. Front end vibration is felt in floor boards and steering wheel when brakes are applied at high speeds, usually between 45–75 as regulated by federal government. Disc brakes gradually replaced drum brakes from between 1960—1980. That practicality is debunked on these cars they didn’t utilise disc brakes on all both axles, which is my preference anyways for being mechanically–inclined. Koor’s confirmed our exhaust leak in Carnegie Pennsylvania and wants $5ØØ+ to replace the exhaust. Tireman Auto Service in Toledo Ohio confirmed the wiper malfunction, they replaced the window regulator and wiper transmission. Vehicle has been inspected by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, Goodyear, Pittsburgh Police Bureau, and State Farm Mutual Insurance. I allow you to contact them for references and any ticketing information. Assuming we can afford to be better than slumlords. Group activities are blessed to keep your peace of mind. Might as well watch from the fray from my point–of–view. Unless you would rather demand my escape other travel options, then I didn’t my own identity to be audited by your Internal Revenue Service. Vehicle is still available for inspection, and I would like your recommendation to convince the owner that your issued recall isn’t for your peace of mind. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 5 recalls for different components of the 2003 Pontiac Grand am.
- Manufacturer: General Motors LLC

- Summary: This defect can affect the safe operation of the airbag system. Until this recall is performed, customers should remove all items from their key rings, leaving only the ignition key. The key fob (if applicable), should also be removed from the key ring. General Motors LLC (GM) notified the agency on July 3, 2014, that they are recalling 5,877,718 model year 2000-2005 Chevrolet Impala and Monte Carlo, 1997-2003 Chevrolet Malibu, 2004-2005 Malibu Classic, 1999-2004 Oldsmobile Alero, 1998-2002 Oldsmobile Intrigue, 1999-2005 Pontiac Grand Am and 2004-2008 Pontiac Grand Prix vehicles. In these models, the weight on the key ring and/or road conditions or some other jarring event may cause the ignition switch to move out of the run position, turning off the engine.
- Consequence: If the key is not in the run position, the air bags may not deploy if the vehicle is involved in a crash, increasing the risk of injury.
- Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will install two key rings and an insert in the key slot or a cover over the key head on all ignition keys, free of charge. The recall began on September 9, 2014. GM's number for this recall is 14350.

I've been driving a Grand Am GT sedan for six months now and I am very impressed. It's a great car, perfect for everyday needs with some fun on the side. The 3400 SFI is a great engine and very reliable. The pricing of Grand Ams seems to be creeping upwards, but then, it is worth it in my opinion rather than to be driving an Accord with a hundred million other people.

I understand the purpose of the governors on the car, which govern redlining, top speed, and slip shifting on an automatic. However, I am curious as to why the engine shuts off at 106 mph. Although I do not typically travel at such high speeds, I recently took the car to the track and was disappointed to find that it would not perform past 106 mph. I was even beaten by a 4cyl stick Grand Am, despite beating them off the line and in the 1/4 mile. It seems unfair that they were able to reach 120mph. Additionally, I am wondering why I cannot access my trunk from within the car, as was possible with the old Grand Am's. Could you please provide an explanation for these issues? Thank you.

I really like this car! It's not too big or too small. I traded in my 2003 Corolla for this Grand Am and the smooth pickup is definitely the best part. It has enough power to move out quickly if necessary. However, it is a little too noisy and I find myself turning up the radio to drown out the background noise. Additionally, the radio doesn't seem to have good acoustics. The gas mileage is 25-28, which I'm happy with. I previously owned a Cavalier for 10 years, but I enjoy the Pontiac much more. It's a 4-cylinder twin cam.

While shopping for a Honda Accord, we decided to stop by the GM dealer and ended up driving away in a brand new Gt Grand Am with all the bells and whistles for $7000 less than a half loaded 4 cyl Accord. We have been pleasantly surprised with the reliability of this car, having just over 170k on it now and never experiencing any major problems. Additionally, the car is very cheap to maintain, with no timing belt service to worry about. The power windows have been the only issue we've had, possibly due to the cold Canadian winters, as we have had to replace them twice. The car performs well, gets great fuel economy, and we still receive compliments on its looks! Overall, we highly recommend this good solid car for the price.

I've owned my GAGT for over 6 years and 70,000 miles. As with any car, I've experienced some typical issues such as having to replace the front brakes every 15,000 miles, passlock problems, random clicking, and a leaking intake manifold gasket. When I reached out to Pontiac corporate about the front brake servicing, they were minimally helpful. However, after doing some research, I discovered numerous consumer complaints and several Tech Service Bulletins issued by Pontiac regarding the brakes. Additionally, in Massachusetts (and possibly other states), the GAGT can be expensive to insure due to repair costs, similar to a BMW. It seems that many of the negative aspects of the car are related to a corporate philosophy from GM, which, with the recent bailout requests, appears to run deeper than just the GAGT.

Although the G.A. has some drawbacks, such as a rough ride and issues with the windshield and radio, it does offer ample storage space and convenient cup holders. However, as a family car, I would not recommend it due to the cramped front seat and lack of space for a rear-facing car seat. In comparison, the Taurus may be a more suitable option. This car has been a challenge to maintain over the past 6 years. While it was enjoyable to drive initially, it began to experience issues after about a year and a half. The brake system, consisting of front rotor and rear drum brakes, has required frequent replacement due to wear and tear. Additionally, the ignition system, fuel tank, fuel pump, and other components have also required replacement. Despite the significant cost of repairs, I have persevered with this car. However, I would not recommend it to others considering purchasing a vehicle.

Driving the GrandAM on wet and uneven road surfaces can be a nightmare. The vehicle tends to push on left turns and sometimes delivers an abrupt swerve when turning to the left on dry roads. Unfortunately, the GM dealer's response was the typical 'couldn't duplicate condition' and they refused to remove the McPherson struts for thorough examination. As a diehard GM fan, it's disheartening to see the decline in reliability from the old GM Corporation. I'm now considering imports as a replacement, which is something I never thought I would do. Thank you for bringing this to our attention.

It sounds like you've had to replace quite a few parts on your car, including the ignition switch assembly, battery, rotors, mirror adjustment joystick, rear main seal, engine cradle (at less than 70,000 miles!), fuel pump, struts, and strut mounts. Despite all of these repairs, you still plan on keeping it for your teenage son to drive. That way, if he gets into an accident, it won't be a huge loss. :)
