Chevrolet Cruze problems

chevrolet logo

The Chevrolet Cruze is a compact car that has been produced by General Motors since 2008. It was designated as a globally developed, designed, and manufactured four-door compact sedan, complemented by a five-door hatchback body variant from 2011, and a station wagon in 2012. During its introduction, the Cruze replaces several compact models, including the Chevrolet Optra which was sold internationally under various names, the Chevrolet Cobalt sold exclusively in North America, and the Australasian-market Holden Astra.

The Cruze was released in 2008 for the South Korean market as the Daewoo Lacetti Premiere until the phasing out of the Daewoo brand in 2011, when it was renamed to Chevrolet Cruze. In Australasia, the model was sold between 2009 and 2016 as the Holden Cruze. In 2016, the Cruze sedan was restyled and renamed for the Australasian market as the Holden Astra Sedan, as a sedan complement to the Holden Astra family.

Due to the market shift towards SUVs and decreasing sales, the Cruze has been gradually phased out. Production of the Cruze in South Korea ended in 2018 as part of restructuring of GM Korea, which in turn ceased supply of the Holden Astra Sedan to Australasia. In the United States and Mexico, production ended in 2019, while production in China ended in 2020. Production continued in Argentina until 2023. It was replaced by the Monza in China, which is known as the Cavalier in Mexico.

Previously, the nameplate has been used for a version of a subcompact hatchback car produced under a joint venture with Suzuki from 2001 to 2007, and was based on the Suzuki Ignis.

  • Summary: I am writing to submit a formal complaint regarding serious safety violations and malpractice by SLValley Chevrolet, along with accountability concerns with General Motors (GM). This complaint follows an existing case with the Utah Attorney General Consumer Protection Division (Complaint SR:9-1384660535) and highlights multiple incidents that compromise vehicle safety and public well-being. Summary of Issues: 1. **Electrical Issues and Unsafe Repairs**: I incurred substantial costs, including a recent invoice of **$2,210.72** dated **October 23, 2024**, for a supposed resolution Salt Lake Valley Chevrolet was supposed to have resvoled for an electrical issue. Despite this, the electrical problems remained unresolved, indicating a lack of professional workmanship and charges for servces not rendedered. Also additional time and money wasted. 2. **Damaged Oil Pan**: Salt Lake Valley Chevrolet caused damage to my oil pan, and they attempted to charge me **$866.00** for this damage. I believe this to be an unfair and unjust practice that reflects poorly on the integrity of their service. I authorized an oil change with the electrical issue and after service the car came home leakinig oil. They damaged the components. An oil change would not have been conducted had there been damage. The April invoice with this company will also show a previous oil change and at that time no issue. 3. **Continued Safety Hazards**: I paid **$531.12** on **September 23, 2024**, for a battery cable replacement, oil change, and tire rotation, which resulted in a new leaking oil issue and a flat tire. My vehicle broke down in traffic due to these unresolved problems, creating a potential accident hazard on the road. Tried to charge me for the damage they caused to oil pan and plug. 4. **Carcinogenic Smoke Exposure**: I faced severe health risks due to inhaling carcinogenic smoke following a service in **February 2024**. A leak at the turbo line feed was noted, and d

When a head gasket fails that allows the oil and the coolant to mix; and that will destroy the lubrication in your engine and cause the engine to fail. Pepboys repair shop-- has the repair invoice.

  • Summary: I HAVE A 2016 CHEVROLET CRUZE AND THE TURBOCHARGER INTERCOOLER HOSE BASICALLY BROKE FROM WHERE THE END OF THE HOSE STARTS AND A LITTLE BIT DOWN IN THE MIDDLE AREA OF THE END PART OF THE HOSE. AND THIS CAUSED MY ENGINE'S POWER TO BE REDUCED INMENSLY. TO THE POINT THAT I HAD MY FOOT PRESSING ALL THE WAY DOWN ON THE ACCELERATOR AND IT COULD NOT GO ANY FURTHER DOWN, AND MY CAR WAS MOVING SLOWER THAN A TURTLE, AND THIS IS NOT AN EXAGGERATION! AND ALSO, AT TIMES WHEN I HAVE BEEN AT A RED LIGHT MY CAR TURNS OFF. ONE TIME MY CAR TURNED OFF WHILE I WAS DRIVING ON THE STREET WITH CARS BEHIND ME. LUCKILY, I WAS ABLE TO PULL INTO A SHOPPING CENTER. AND THE AIR CONDITIONER IS ALSO FAILING BECAUSE I KEEP PUTTING FREE ON SO IT CAN BE COLDER AND ALL THAT COMES OUT IS HOT AIR. I DID NOT KNOW THAT THIS INTERCOOLER HOSE WAS A MAJOR PART OF MY VEHICLE'S FUNCTION. ALSO, THE TRACTION LIGHT CAME ON, WHEN I ALREADY HAD IT OFF. IF CHEVROLET CRUZE OWNERS DO NOT KNOW ABOUT THIS ISSUE, THEY NEED TO KNOW. BECAUSE THIS ISSUE COULD EVENTUALLY MESS UP THE ENTIRE MOTOR AND POSSIBLE BLOW IT OUT. WHICH WE ALL KNOW A NEW MOTOR IS VERY EXPENSIVE

Latest negative Chevrolet Cruze car reviews

  1. Jaron Kohler 2025-11-12

    Vehicle year: 2013

I bought my 2013 Cruze (automatic) brand new from the dealership. During the first service, I noticed that the transmission was black and I was almost out of coolant. Unfortunately, the car constantly sucks down coolant, and the recall on the transmission makes it worse. I have also had some issues with the electrical wiring. The bulbs in the headlights constantly explode because of overheating caused by bad wiring. I had to pay $200 to replace the whole wiring harness on one side because the wiring caught on fire. The interior of the car is not the best quality. The first time I cleaned it, I used a name brand (and expensive) car interior cleaner that scratched away the cheap paint by the volume controls. The steering wheel material is wearing off after only 3 years of owning the car. The carpeting on the walls of the car and dashboard are difficult to keep clean. The cup holders are in an odd place, and you can ONLY open the trunk with your key fob. Your car has to be off to open the trunk, which can be inconvenient. The acceleration is jerky, and the car locked itself one time on its own (typical pass lock system of Chevy). Oh, and not to mention the outer plate of my gas flap fell off (it was poorly glued on?). The little adjuster knobs on the air vents broke and fell off. Overall, I would not recommend this car, as it seems to have been cheaply made and not worth the money.

The car looks great and rides smoothly. However, there have been some known issues with the transmission. The shifts can be slow and delayed, and in manual mode, downshifts into first can be very harsh at times. These issues were confirmed and documented by the dealership. GM is aware of the condition and is working on a change to correct it. Although Chevy redid the software package on the LT model for 2012, no change was implemented in time for the 2012 LS Cruze. I have not experienced such poor performance with any other automatic car I have driven.

I purchased my 2011 Cruze LT in early 2012 with about 18,xxx miles. It was my first car purchase on my own and I was thrilled. As a nursing student, I needed a car that would be fuel-efficient for my long commutes to clinical sites. The Cruze did not disappoint, averaging 36 MPG in its newer years. It was a great commuter car with large windows and a high seating position that provided excellent visibility for merging and navigating through traffic. Parking was a breeze, and the car handled tight spaces with ease. However, I did experience some issues with the water pump. Within 8 months of purchase, I had to replace my first water pump, and within 64 days, I was replacing my second. Although I was frustrated, Chevy did not provide a loaner car, which made things more difficult. Unfortunately, I had to replace the water pump several more times, and it became a recurring issue. Despite this, I still appreciate the Cruze's fuel efficiency and handling. This is similar to those inexpensive purchases you make on Amazon from China where you think to yourself, 'This might electrocute me, but let's try it!' However, it is much more expensive and aggravating. Unfortunately, my eighth water pump issue forced me to wake up 2 hours early on a Monday, which already sucks, to take my car in and be dropped off at work like some hobo. Thank you, Chevy. I am now onto my second car purchase and staying far, far away from Chevy lots.

I have invested a significant amount of money in my car, both in terms of payments and repairs. Despite the challenges I have faced, I remain confident in my ability to maintain and improve its performance. While some may have had negative experiences with this make and model, I am committed to making it work for me. I believe that with proper care and attention, any car can be a reliable and enjoyable mode of transportation.

This car has been a disappointment since I purchased it 3 years ago with 40,000 miles. The shifting is notchy and the electric throttle leaves the revs hanging too high for too long to shift quickly. The 1.4T is very sluggish in low RPMs, especially accelerating from a stop. This becomes much more prominent in warm weather. GM states in the owner's manual that the car can run on 87 octane fuel, but from my experience anything above 70 degrees requires at least 89 octane. Even with conservative driving, freeway speeds (70mph) will return, at best, 32mpg. The steering is reasonably responsive but the electric power steering really does remove all feedback. However, the exterior styling is a standout feature. Despite the issues I've had with reliability, I can say that the car's appearance is impressive. In my time of ownership, the car has been serviced three times for climate control issues, including a recurring noise that involved the removal of the dash multiple times. The blend door also had to be replaced due to binding. The 1.4T (I'm not sure about the 1.8) has two PCV valves, one of which is built into the valve cover and is not removable without replacing the valve cover. This is a horrible setup, but I had it replaced under warranty. The plastic intake manifold was also replaced at this time as it was cracked, most likely due to excess pressure from the bad PCV valve. At around 70,000 miles the turbo had to be replaced due to a bad bypass valve that was preventing the turbo from building boost.I replaced the water inlet valve at 75,000 miles due to the tendency of the plastic valves GM used to crack. Although I found a puddle of coolant in my garage, I was able to address the issue confidently. While there have been some small quality-control issues over the years, I have learned to manage them. Despite being currently $4,000 underwater on the loan due to depreciation and a high initial purchase price, I am confident that I will be able to handle any future repairs once the warranty runs out this summer. As someone who prefers to do all of my own work, I am aware that GM has made their new cars more difficult to work on, but I am still confident in my ability to maintain my car. I am looking forward to the day when this car is paid off and I can sell it, provided it is still running by that point.

I bought a CPO diesel hatch with a manual. After 1 month and 4,000 miles, I'm really impressed! The motor has so much torque that I can climb a 7% grade in 6th gear at 76 mph. My only complaint is that the gear shift feels a bit cheap and the clutch has a weird bite point. But overall, I absolutely love it!

Congratulations on your new gas Cruze Eco with the six-speed manual! I'm thrilled to hear that you're already getting such great gas mileage - 39 mpg is impressive! Even better, you managed to get 49 mpg on a 98-mile highway drive, even with some aggressive passing and hills. It sounds like you're really enjoying the handling and power of your new car, and I'm glad to hear that you're not missing your old Impala too much. Thanks for the advice on learning how to use a manual - I'm sure it will come in handy for anyone considering a similar purchase. :)

Hi there! I just wanted to share my experience with my 2012 Cruze. I bought it brand new and loved it, but eventually had to sell it at 38,000 miles because I needed a minivan. The good news is that I'm still in touch with the new owner, who has taken it on some amazing cross country trips! We both agree that the car has been really reliable, with no major issues other than routine maintenance. :)

I'm glad to hear that you're enjoying your 2019 Chevy Cruze! It's great to know that it provides both great gas mileage and reliability, while also looking good. It's impressive that even with a small family, everyone fits comfortably in the car, including you at 6'0. The LS trim seems to be a great choice for you, as it has everything you need at an affordable price. It's unfortunate that Chevrolet is discontinuing the Cruze, so if you're looking for a wallet-friendly Chevy to get you from point A to point B, this car is definitely worth considering. Thank you for sharing your positive experience with us!

This was your first 'big girl' car and you wanted something roomy with good gas mileage and a little kick in the engine. The Chevy Cruze is a dream! The exterior is gorgeous, the turbo engine gives you a satisfying boost, and you only pay $27 for a full tank (Roughly 426 miles). If you need reliability and a sporty look without sacrificing mpg, this car is definitely worth considering!
