2011 Chevrolet Cruze problems

chevrolet logo

The Chevrolet Cruze is a compact car that has been produced by General Motors since 2008. It was designated as a globally developed, designed, and manufactured four-door compact sedan, complemented by a five-door hatchback body variant from 2011, and a station wagon in 2012. During its introduction, the Cruze replaces several compact models, including the Chevrolet Optra which was sold internationally under various names, the Chevrolet Cobalt sold exclusively in North America, and the Australasian-market Holden Astra.

The Cruze was released in 2008 for the South Korean market as the Daewoo Lacetti Premiere until the phasing out of the Daewoo brand in 2011, when it was renamed to Chevrolet Cruze. In Australasia, the model was sold between 2009 and 2016 as the Holden Cruze. In 2016, the Cruze sedan was restyled and renamed for the Australasian market as the Holden Astra Sedan, as a sedan complement to the Holden Astra family.

Due to the market shift towards SUVs and decreasing sales, the Cruze has been gradually phased out. Production of the Cruze in South Korea ended in 2018 as part of restructuring of GM Korea, which in turn ceased supply of the Holden Astra Sedan to Australasia. In the United States and Mexico, production ended in 2019, while production in China ended in 2020. Production continued in Argentina until 2023. It was replaced by the Monza in China, which is known as the Cavalier in Mexico.

Previously, the nameplate has been used for a version of a subcompact hatchback car produced under a joint venture with Suzuki from 2001 to 2007, and was based on the Suzuki Ignis.

Common 2011 Chevrolet Cruze problems

The 2011 Chevrolet Cruze has been reported to have several common problems, primarily related to the engine and electrical system.

One major issue is transmission failure, particularly in the 2011 model year. Owners of the 2011 Chevy Cruze have reported issues with the car's transmission, including refusal to shift correctly and complete failure, which is likely to result in a replacement.

Another common problem is engine issues, affecting several Cruze models, particularly the 2017-2018 years. These issues include failure, stalling, and even smoke under the hood. Drivers have traced the problem to a damaged cylinder that leaks oil and, in some instances, metal shrapnel contamination of the turbo injector.

Coolant leaks are another problem reported by frustrated owners of the 2011 Cruze. The leaks can cause the engine to overheat and automatically disable the A/C unit, and even lead to the smell of antifreeze leaking into the interior of the vehicle. In some cases, smoke has been seen coming from under the hood.

Electrical issues have also been reported, causing drivers to be unable to start their cars and resulting in faulty radios and illuminated check engine lights.

In addition to these issues, the 2011 Chevrolet Cruze has been recalled seven times, covering a range of problems from potential rollaway and an incorrectly welded fuel tank attachment to a fire risk due to oil inadvertently spilling during an oil change and pooling near the exhaust.

Despite these issues, the 2011 Chevrolet Cruze has earned good crash-test results and is considered a reliable used car, particularly with the standard manual transmission, which appears to be the least-problematic version of this compact car.

POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-01-25
  • VIN: 1G1PH5S92B7
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
  • Summary: While driving home on the interstate after work, I was travelling at around 65 miles per hour, with the cruise control set at that speed. In an instant I lost all engine power and began to slow down very rapidly. A quick look to the rearview mirror to ensure nothing was approaching the rear of my vehicle, I found that I could see nothing except grey and white smoke behind me from all three mirrors. I was forced to remove myself from the highway for fear of causing an accident by blinding drivers with the smoke coming from my exhaust, and I was able to use the service road to get to the next fueling station. Upon arrival, I opened the hood and found that oil had sprayed out of every available portal in the engine, it exited through the vacuum lines, pressure sensors onto my alternator, saturated my serpentine belt as well as everything else ion the engine compartment. I noticed most of the oil came from a round hole behind the oil filler cap through a busted vacuum diaphragm that had blown out instead of regulating vacuum, indicating extreme positive pressure in the crankcase. As this was my MOS in the Army, I am experienced with dangers and risks involved in these situations, and I will give warning that if this happens during the right traffic situations, lives will be lost as a result of the smoke screen developimg when the oil hits the catalytic convertors combined with the rapid decline in speed without warning of any kind, and when it does happen, and it will, since there are 8 million of these vehicles on the road and counting, this complaint should serve as proper and fair warning od the damgers and risks with allowing this engine to remain in use without a warning system to indicate the tiny plastic check valve has been released from its position. I was fortunate enough that I only suffered a few curse words and horns blowing and flipping me the bird, but i have to admit I was afraid for my life and someone with less driving experience will have a bad outcom

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-05-08
  • VIN: 1G1PH5S9XB7
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: I bought my car used. I have replaced the Brake Pedal Position Sensor 3 times on my own and 1 time by Anderson General Tire. Sometimes when I go to brake, there is no brake and I have to push real hard with my foot and finally the car will brake. It feels as if my brakes go out and sometimes I have to pump the brake pedal. It happens also when I start my car after it's been sitting and I brake to shift into drive. My car says it doesn't have any recalls but I have been having this problem. My car has been serviced numerous times by Chevrolet immediately after buying it. I only had to stop taking it there because my warranty ran out and then they wouldn't cover the costs anymore. Codes that come up are P057D and U0140-71: Brake Pedal Position Sensor Circuit High and Brake Pedal Position Sensor Circuit High Voltage and Anti-lock Brake System (although this does not show on the dash).

POWER TRAIN,AIR BAGS,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-10-01
  • VIN: 1G1PF5S9XB7
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,AIR BAGS,ENGINE
  • Summary: Due to OnStar 2G sunsetting their services at the end of this year, all makes of General Motors vehicles did not comply to any of the customers requests to upgrade their module to 4G services, although upon researching, all Canadian GM vehicles did get the upgrade well over 7 years ago. This is well beyond a concern with GM and OnStar customers. With the NHTSA as a safety liaison and protecting the consumer, if a module upgrade can be applied in a vehicle that is on the same assembly parts, platform, electrical components...and be denied from the United States? The NHTSA should realize that this will be frivolous law suits because of neglect and safety concerns with GM and OnStar in the United States.

POWER TRAIN,SERVICE BRAKES,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-06-28
  • VIN: 1G1PC5SH1B7
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,SERVICE BRAKES,ENGINE
  • Summary: I drive daily taking 2 freeways. I stopped at the traffic light and the car felt like shaking. Stabilitrack warning and traction control warning light and messages appeared on the screen and also the check engine light turned on, and ABS too. Break pedal was really hard to push and breaks were not working (i was not reducing speed at all) and it felt like the engine loose power and the car felt rough while driving. I was approaching to another traffic light and it was a red light so I prepared to decrease my speed and stop to wait for the green light. When I placed my foot and pressed the break pedal, it was hard. I was pushing it hard but the pedal did not respond, it was very hard and not moving at all and I was almost on the intersection, which always has heavy traffic with cars, 18 wheeler trucks and delivery trucks and more because its an industrial zone and Amazon and UPS are on this avenue along with other major companies. I could be involved and be responsible for a really bad crash if the light wouln't turn green on time. Fortunately it changed to the green light and I was in the very front. After this, I tried to go to the side if the road but there was a sidewalk and it was a no parking zone with no space/edge to park In case of emergency. I drove slowly with my emergency lights on and moved to the right lane until I found a space to stop. The car was shaking really bad, same lights on the dash were on and messages on the control panel did not change or disapear. The car was still moving when the engine suddenly stopped working while I was driving it. Music was playing and all lights worked so I knew it wasn't the battery. This situation was so scary that I was afraid to drive my car. I did not want to cause an accident resulting in injury to myself, others or any fatality. I've always taken my car to service and to be fixed in chevrolet. My car shook a little since 2020 and chevy guys don't know the reason. Total is about $2800 to get it fixed.

Negative 2011 Chevrolet Cruze car reviews

I purchased a brand new 2011 Chevy Cruze in May 2011. Unfortunately, I had to take it to the shop six times during the year that I owned it. Recently, we sold the car at a loss of $4,000, but I am relieved to be rid of my lemon car. We attempted to contact GM for three weeks, but we only received voicemails and the runaround. It would have been nice if they had taken the time to listen to our concerns and feedback, but it seems they were not interested in doing so. Nonetheless, I remain hopeful that they will improve their customer service in the future.

I purchased my Chevy Cruze in Modesto, CA, used with just over 102,000 miles for $8,000. During the test drive, I was impressed with how nice it rode and the beautiful interior. However, I regret not looking at more cars and just settling. It was my mistake. As the only car I had previously owned was a 6 cylinder, I wasn't used to driving a 4 cylinder. After about a month, the seats became uncomfortable and cramped. Unfortunately, I experienced an overheating issue where two hoses and a temp gauge went out, costing me approximately $600 to fix. As I was still getting used to driving a 4 cylinder, I was unaware that I was driving on 3 cylinders as one had broken. After only 5 and a half months of having the car, I had another overheating issue. I took it to Chevy to have it fixed, and it needs a new cylinder head, which is estimated to cost over $5,000, almost $6,000. While the Chevy Cruze may be a reliable car if bought brand new or only slightly used, it is not reliable at all in my experience. As a home health provider, I needed a car that would last me for a number of years, and unfortunately, this car just isn't it.

I have owned a 2011 Chevy Cruze for 7 years. While it has been a reliable car, I have had some issues with maintenance and repairs. Unfortunately, I have spent over $7500 on repairs, including a recent $1000 expense for a new catalytic converter. Despite purchasing an extended warranty, I have found that it did not cover as much as I had hoped. While I have had some frustrations with my Chevy, I am considering exploring other options such as Toyota. I hope that my experience can help others make an informed decision when purchasing a car.

The Chevrolet Cruze has some issues that need to be addressed. One of the main reasons for these issues is the 221 degree thermostat, which causes the plastic parts and hoses to overheat. Additionally, there are too many coolant hoses and bypass hoses running everywhere. The valve cover and pcv also require regular replacement. Traction control can also cause problems. However, with proper maintenance and attention to these issues, the Chevrolet Cruze can still be a reliable car. It is important to note that GM offers a wide range of products, and it is worth exploring all options before making a decision.

I was really disappointed with my purchase of a used car. Despite my initial excitement, I ended up having to replace a lot of parts, including the thermostat housing unit, switch pump valve, hoses, oxygen sensors, spark plugs, and ignition coil. The engine was constantly overheating and the check engine light was always on, making it impossible to use the automatic start. Even though I was initially attracted to the car's gas mileage, I ended up spending hundreds of dollars just to keep it running. With all the recalls and brake issues, I've decided to trade it in for a jeep. I would definitely recommend staying away from this car.

Positive 2011 Chevrolet Cruze car reviews

The most common complaint that people have is regarding the transmission. However, after test driving dozens of cars in this class and finally buying this one, I can say that the computer-operated transmission is a bit strange. But, it is important to note that you may face similar issues with other cars that have a CTV transmission. That being said, I absolutely love this car so far. The front seats are very comfortable and it offers a lot more technology than any other car I have seen in its class, especially considering the price. The ride is very smooth and quiet, and while it may not be the most exciting car to drive (I do miss my truck with its RWD and tire-smoking fun), it is still a very pleasant and smooth ride. Additionally, it is great on gas if you drive responsibly.

My family and I were on the hunt for a new car to replace my trusty 1987 Mercedes 300TD diesel. With my wife driving our 2004 Suburban and only getting around 14 mpg mixed, we needed a car that was fuel efficient, spacious enough to carry our three kids and luggage, and most importantly, had a manual transmission! We considered the new Focus, but unfortunately, the upper trim levels did not offer a stick shift, and even though I love Ford, I found the design to be unappealing. The Elantra was also a contender, but the lower trim level was the only one that offered a manual transmission, and the design was a bit too futuristic for our taste. However, after test driving the ECO, we were smitten with its quietness, little turbo motor, and the smooth shifting manual transmission. We are so pleased with our purchase that we plan to pass it down to our kids in five years. The added bonus of the manual transmission is that it prevents texting and driving, which is priceless! On our first trip with only 500 miles on it, we were thrilled to get an impressive 47.8MPG.

It's all good unless you have a junk turbo on it. Unfortunately, that caused my head gasket to blow. But overall, the car itself is great, as long as there is no turbo.

Have over 25,000k already. The Cruze has been very dependable. It continues to feel solid and well built. We are getting an average of 38mpg with a loaded model with automatic transmission. Bought as a commuter car and we couldn't be more pleased with it!

  5. Cordell Anderson 2024-04-10

I've been reading about this car for the past 18 months. Now that I've owned it for about a month, I can confidently say that it performs exactly as promised. It's quiet, smooth, fun to drive, stylish, and efficient. I can even get 36+ mpg on the highway, as long as I keep my speed below 70 mph. If I go any faster, the mileage drops quite a bit (70 mph is about 2800 RPM). However, at speeds between 55-65 mph (which is the common speed on my daily commute), I get closer to 39 mpg. I checked the computer against the manual way of checking mileage and it's accurate. I'm also really pleased with the feel of the electronic throttle and 6-speed auto transmission. It accelerates nicely without any gear hunting.
