Dodge Nitro 2011 problems
The Dodge Nitro is a compact SUV manufactured and marketed by Dodge for model years 2007-2012 across a single generation — as a close variant of the second-generation Jeep Liberty. Both vehicles use a composite unitized construction integrating the body structure with full-length frame rails.
The Nitro entered production in August 2006 aside the Liberty at the Toledo North Assembly Plant in Toledo, Ohio and was offered in a single, four-door body configuration. Like the Liberty, it was manufactured in RHD and LHD configurations, and marketed globally. Sales commenced in September 2006 for model year 2007 in rear-wheel drive or optional and part-time four-wheel drive. Approximately 200,000 Nitro models were manufactured before production ended in December 2011.
Background
The Nitro debuted in February 2005 at the Chicago Auto Show as a concept with aluminum-trimmed vents door handles and rear hatch, as well as an interior with a center stack and shifter in satin silver.
The Nitro became Dodge's first compact SUV model since the Raider was discontinued in 1990. It also became the first modern Dodge marketed in Europe, where the Nitro was Dodge's only SUV until the 2009 model year when the larger, car-based, lower-priced Dodge Journey crossover SUV arrived.
The Nitro shares mechanicals and much bodywork with its platform-mate, the Jeep Liberty, while using a slightly extended wheelbase, the extra length split between the rear seat and cargo areas.
The Nitro debuted with an SUV class-leading 5,000-pound (2,300 kg) towing capacity. Safety features such as electronic roll mitigation, traction control, and side curtain airbags, as well as a functional sliding cargo floor marketed as Load 'N Go were offered as standard equipment. The system allows a moveable floor panel to slide out from the cargo area by 18 in (457 mm) to ease loading.

Based on the complaints from owners of the 2011 Dodge Nitro, several common problems have been reported:
- Electrical Issues: Owners have reported various electrical malfunctions, including problems with interior lights, horn, windshield wipers, and door locks. Some owners mentioned that these features would activate randomly, leading to inconvenience and safety concerns. The faulty Totally Integrated Power Module (TIPM) is often at the core of these electrical problems, causing issues like difficulties starting the vehicle, battery drain, and vehicle stalling unexpectedly.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-11-01
- VIN: 1D4PU5GK0BW
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: I am experiencing electrical issues with my 2011 Dodge Nitro SXT. Despite replacing the alternator and battery, the SUV continues to have operational problems. Additionally, I replaced the TMP. I subsequently took the vehicle to a local mechanical shop, where it was confirmed that the issue lies with the PCM (Powertrain Control Module). I have read about a recall related to electrical issues in the Nitro, and I would like to inquire about the possibility of obtaining reimbursement. Thank you for your assistance.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-10-02
- VIN: 1D4PU4GKXBW
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: The contact owns a 2011 Dodge Nitro. The contact stated while driving 50 MPH, the vehicle inadvertently lost electrical and motive power. The contact was able to coast to the shoulder of the roadway, where the vehicle was able to be restarted. The vehicle returned to normal functionality, but the failure had since become a regular occurrence. Several unknown warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer or an independent mechanic to be diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 103,000.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,AIR BAGS,VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2015-01-28
- VIN: 1D4PU2GKXBW
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,AIR BAGS,VISIBILITY/WIPER
- Summary: Airbags: This vehicle has had a recall for a "Ram" emblem being placed over the airbag such that it becomes a projectile in an airbag depleyment. Dodge makes it very difficult to avail of getting it removed. I am not close to the dealership, I am very busy and somewhat disabled. Since the first notice arrived in the mail-- maybe three years ago-- I have returned the notices with a request for them to send a tech to my home and make the repair. I see there has been at least one death due to this obvious flaw, butthey have not cared enough to answer. Why should I take a day so that they can fix this deadly "extra feature" of shrapnel being placed over an explosive? Electrical: This is a serious safety issue that Dodge will not recognize or even discuss. Getting the window back up is a matter of finessing the "up" switch every which way, multiple attempts required (switch has now fallen out). Very distracting, after going through a toll booth after dark and 15 degrees. You can't stop and F with it, you have to do it on the move. It can take as long as five minutes to get it back up (Window now completely disabled). They will do anything to save seventeen cents per car, who cares if it makes it unsafe for the owner. Not Dodge! I wrote to Dodge (no reply), then the MI Attorney General about this, they responded "We have written to this manufacturer twice and have not received a response". Dodge takes no responsibility for their shoddy work. We pay, we die, they keep doing what they do. It disappoints that even the AG's "Consumer Protection Division" has no teeth. Visibility: It would be interesting to learn how many pedestrians have been hit with this particular model. With all the safety regs out there, it's amazing that a design that blocks visibility gets a pass. Unfortunately it is not the kind of thing you can discover in a test drive, but - crosswalks and four-way stops in particular are dangerous. You can hide a Ryder truck behind these A pillars.

I contacted online about recall and they set-up to take this vehicle to a Dodge dealer to have required recall work done. I took this vehicle to this dealer and on this INVOICE from dealer repair it states: Recall/ CSN 1 [Safety Recall W09 – Driver Air Bag Emblem] CAUSE: F 19W09183 Safety Recall W 09 Driver Airbag Emblem – Remove Remove Driver Airbag Emblem (2 -Skilled) 997471W FC: Part#: Count: Claim Type: W AUTH CODE: Parts: 0.00Labor: 0.00Other: 0.00Total Line B:0.00 Removed DAB emblem 19 – WO -91 – 83 After this job was completed, I was told by this dealer that It might take 6 months for a replacement part to come available. I will be notified by the recall company when a new part to be place in this vehicle. Now, when I enter this same vehicle VIN it states as 0 recalls. My airbag concern light on my dash remains on and sometimes alerts me by sound! Nothing has been replaced for over 7 months and now it shows no recalls! I have both original Invoice pages from this dealer still stapled together and scanned to email if needed! My vehicle would not pass inspection if needed, because of this issue and safety concerns. Called about a recall the recall is for vehicles manufacturer from 07/17/2011 to 12/2011. My truck was manufactured three days prior to this recall time frame. I believe my vehicle is affected by the faulty TIPM as well. I would like the part to be covered under the recall.
FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2016-10-07
- VIN: 1D4PT7GX9BW
- Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: When fueling the vehicle gas will spew out after the pump has shut off. I've tried many different things to try and stop this issue. If I fill the tank very slowly it will sometimes not spew or it may cut down on the amount spewed, but it has not made the issue stop. This really is dangerous and ridiculous. From my online research into the issue, it appears to be common with this vehicle. Although an easy, definitive reason was not given. Please address this. Thank you.

I have owned two 2011 Nitros, one from new and one from used. Fortunately, I have had none of the issues with either of mine that others have had. As someone who works for an independent repair shop and whose husband is a Dodge/Chrysler Tech, I can attest that like any vehicle, they have to be maintained and rust is NEVER a good thing! I have replaced my timing belt, water pump, spark plugs and flushed my cooling system all done because of mileage and recommended. I keep my oil changed every 4k miles and rotate every other oil change. My baby has been paid for 3 years now and I have no intentions of going into any car payments or getting rid of my Nitro. It's really a shame they stopped making them..
-
Bought it used with 102,000 miles. The ride is good and the seats are very comfortable. The steering is very precise and it handles well. The 3.7 liter engine is very responsive. Overall, I am very pleased with the Nitro and I hope to get 5 years or longer with it.
-
I really appreciate some aspects of my Dodge Nitro, such as the strong exterior material, extended bumper, and front hood. It's great to know that it performed well on crash tests and feels safe to drive. However, I have noticed that the power steering is non-existent, which takes some getting used to. Additionally, it's not the most fuel-efficient car out there, and the interior can feel quite compact, especially if you have kids. Despite these minor issues, I feel incredibly grateful to own such a stylish and beautiful vehicle!
-
Purchased in March 2011, I added a performance chip and K&N filter and was pleasantly surprised with the results. Not only did I get much better performance, but I also saw an increase of over 5 MPG on the highway, going from 22-23 MPG to about 16 MPG. The handling is great with tight suspension, and it can easily haul heavy payloads with very little sway. I absolutely love it!
-
I bought my Nitro in 2020 and I absolutely love it! It has 95,000 miles on it and I have no complaints. It runs perfectly. Just make sure to keep up-to-date on oil changes and regular servicing.

Delmer Nitzsche 2024-08-13
In 2016, I made the mistake of purchasing a 2011 Dodge Nitro with 116,000 miles on it for $9,000. Although I was excited to drive it off the lot with a new exhaust, new tires, and a fresh inspection sticker, I soon realized that the car had several issues. The driver's side window would only go up if I jiggled the button, and the radio went out about 5 miles up the road. Despite my efforts to fix it, the radio still doesn't work properly. The air conditioner has never worked, and the switch for hot and cold didn't work right. I had to replace the water pump about 7 months in, and recently, I had to spend $1,100 on a new oil pan and transmission pan. Last week, I had no heat, and after taking it to the dealer, they told me that the starter was bad and it would cost $285 before they could even look at the heat issue. I decided to cut my losses and have it towed home. Now, I plan to use it as a I close with this, for your sake, your family's sake, the sake of your bank account, and for goodness' sake, never, ever, EVER buy one of these colossal pieces [non-permissible content removed].

Hi there! I wanted to share that I bought my Nitro back in 2012. Since then, I've had the engine and transmission rebuilt. Unfortunately, some things on the interior are starting to fall apart one by one.

The vehicle performs most tasks well. I removed sand from the system to fix the issue with the heater not getting very warm. The cruise control shifts up and down on the slightest grade, but this is a minor issue. Additionally, the doors only lock sometimes from the door lock switch on the driver's door. Overall, these are minor issues that can be easily addressed.

I recently rented a 2011 Dodge Nitro for a 10-day trip from Las Vegas up into the mountains of Utah. The good news is that the car did not overheat, and it was reasonably comfortable and roomy. The gas mileage was about what was rated. However, the bad news is that under the load of two adults, two kids, and two suitcases, the engine struggled each time the air conditioning was turned on. The temperature conditions were between 70 - 100 F. Each time the AC unit was turned on under any load, you would get a stuttering similar to an alternator going out. I found this quite annoying and would recommend trying the larger engine model before buying this. Remember to always try before you buy!

I owned a 2011 Dodge Nitro and unfortunately, after 120,000 miles, the motor seized up. I hope this doesn't happen to anyone else!
