2018 Chevrolet Cruze problems

chevrolet logo

The Chevrolet Cruze is a compact car that has been produced by General Motors since 2008. It was designated as a globally developed, designed, and manufactured four-door compact sedan, complemented by a five-door hatchback body variant from 2011, and a station wagon in 2012. During its introduction, the Cruze replaces several compact models, including the Chevrolet Optra which was sold internationally under various names, the Chevrolet Cobalt sold exclusively in North America, and the Australasian-market Holden Astra.

The Cruze was released in 2008 for the South Korean market as the Daewoo Lacetti Premiere until the phasing out of the Daewoo brand in 2011, when it was renamed to Chevrolet Cruze. In Australasia, the model was sold between 2009 and 2016 as the Holden Cruze. In 2016, the Cruze sedan was restyled and renamed for the Australasian market as the Holden Astra Sedan, as a sedan complement to the Holden Astra family.

Due to the market shift towards SUVs and decreasing sales, the Cruze has been gradually phased out. Production of the Cruze in South Korea ended in 2018 as part of restructuring of GM Korea, which in turn ceased supply of the Holden Astra Sedan to Australasia. In the United States and Mexico, production ended in 2019, while production in China ended in 2020. Production continued in Argentina until 2023. It was replaced by the Monza in China, which is known as the Cavalier in Mexico.

Previously, the nameplate has been used for a version of a subcompact hatchback car produced under a joint venture with Suzuki from 2001 to 2007, and was based on the Suzuki Ignis.

Common 2018 Chevrolet Cruze problems

The 2018 Chevrolet Cruze has been reported to have several common problems, primarily related to the engine, transmission, and brakes.

  • Engine Problems: Many 2018 Chevy Cruzes have been reported to have engine problems, including stalling while driving and engine failure. These issues may be caused by a bad alternator, faulty sensors, lack of fuel, or a damaged cylinder that leaks oil from under the car. In some cases, metal shrapnel has contaminated the turbo injector, leading to more expensive repairs.
  • Transmission Problems: The most widespread complaint from 2018 Chevy Cruze owners is the engine shutting off while driving, which is often due to computer software issues with the engine control module. Most dealers will install the software update for free, while others may charge up to $100. The touchscreen freezing has also been reported by some Cruze owners, which is typically caused by a software problem. Many dealerships will update the infotainment system software for free, while others may charge around $50.
  • Brake Issues: Premature brake wear is a common problem with the 2018 Chevrolet Cruze, particularly with the rear brakes. Replacing the rear brake pads and rotors costs around $550. Additionally, some consumers have reported issues with the brake pedal being unusually long, making it difficult to get comfortable with the brakes and causing them to brake earlier than average to avoid collisions.
  • Valve Cover Issues: When the valve cover is loose, it can leak air, causing an oil-burning scent and rough idling or hesitation when accelerating. Chevy Cruze owners have reported issues with their valve cover triggering a check engine light.
  • Dash Display Brightness: Customers have reported that the dash display is too bright, causing issues when driving at night. The bright display can blind drivers and make it difficult to see out of the passenger side mirror when parking. Many have tried to have the issue remedied by the dealership, but the problem remains unresolved.
  • Recalls: There are three recalls on the 2018 Chevrolet Cruze, including a potential fuel leak in a crash, missing bolts on the start/stop accumulator end cap that could result in a transmission leak, and a tire inflator kit instead of a spare tire in some vehicles. The most serious recall is for a potential fuel leak in a crash, which Chevy addresses by installing a lock-ring on the fuel tank to prevent fuel from leaking.

These common problems with the 2018 Chevrolet Cruze can lead to average repair bills as the car ages. A well-maintained Cruze can last around 200,000 miles, but regular annual maintenance costs are similar to other small cars, according to data provided by Repair Pal at $403 per year. As a used 2018 Chevy Cruze reaches 100,000 miles, owners should be prepared to replace the mass airflow sensor for $225, a brake booster costing $400, as well as the track bar which costs around $200.

  • VIN: 3G1BF6SM0JS
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: Shortly after I merge onto a highway and pickup speed my cruze apears to be slipping gears. It does not do it every time but it appears to be happening increasingly often. It starts to shake violently, becomes hard to stear and refuses to excelerate even though the rpm's are rising significantly higher then they should be, leaving me going 35 - 40mph on a 65mph highway, it does not fully decelerate either. It happened the other day and the road speed was 65mph to start which my car wouldn't do then immediately became congested which is when I realized it wouldn't properly decelerate either, at least before I thought I coupd just pull over if it lasted to long. My car only has 22,000 miles on it and was certified pre-owned. It is regularly maintenanced as well. I have not taken it to be inspected just yet but that is my next step as I don't feel at all safe driving it in this condition.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-05-13
  • VIN: 1G1BE5SM8J7
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: We have had this car for little over a 1.5yrs without any issues. Within the past 2 months, the vehicle has been malfunctioning, primarily the auto stop feature. On four separate occasions, when braking is engaged and bringing the vehicle to full stop, the engine cuts off, leaving all other components running, and the check engine light comes on. After approximately 1.5 hours of waiting, the engine turns on, the check engine light is gone and once it reaches the service center, diagnostics are unable to detect any issues. There are 3 calls on our account for our vehicle issue. The problem is that in every incident, the vehicle could not be recovered to have it at the service center within less than 2 hours to be properly diagnosed. When connected to the diagnostics, there isn't an indication of the malfunction. The first incident occurred May13,2023, at a stop light within 3 miles of the dealership, on our way to a family birthday party, 2 hours away. Service center was within an hour of closing, and asked we tow it there, they will investigate on May 15,2023, when they are open. After waiting in 90degree+ weather for AAA for almost 2 hours, (they said we would have to wait for 3 hours), I attempted to start the vehicle, and it turned over. We drove home and brought it to the service center, nothing on diagnostics. Frustrated, we left. Second incident occurred on July 5,2023, morning of my knee surgery. I was stranded on an off ramp at a light. We towed it to the dealership, again, and they were too busy to look at right away. By the next morning, it resolved itself. Again. Third incident occurred July 11, 2023, in Greensboro, after an appointment consulting on oral surgery and scheduling for my wife, in the parking lot of the office. We called the dealership, and for approximately 45 min. they tried to assist, no avail. 1.5hrs pass, it starts. AGAIN, doesn't register. Fourth incident on July 15, 2023, in my driveway. It started this morning. BEYOND frustrated.

FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-11-10
  • VIN: 1G1BC5SM2J7
  • Components: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
  • Summary: The contact owns a 2018 Chevrolet Cruze. The contact stated while driving 25-30 MPH, the vehicle felt imbalanced and was shuddering. Additionally, the engine emitted abnormal knocking sounds. The check engine warning light was illuminated. The contact then parked the vehicle a block away from his residence. The contact who is a certified independent mechanic, diagnosed that the fuel injectors had failed. The contact also diagnosed that the fuel injector had melted and fused into the number one cylinder, causing the engine to misfire. The contact replaced the fuel injectors, the spark plugs, the fuel line, the fuel harness, and the vehicle software were flushed. However, the failure reoccurred. Upon further investigation, the contact became aware that the engine inside the vehicle was not the appropriate engine as it was 1.5 liter and its specifications indicated that it was an engine specifically designed for a Chevrolet Malibu while the vehicle was a Chevrolet Cruze. However, the original owner of the vehicle, who was the contact's neighbor, had never replaced the engine. The contact then determined that the failure was associated to NHTSA Campaign Number: 19V642000 (Electrical System, Fuel System, Gasoline, Engine). The contact notified the dealer where the vehicle was originally purchased and informed them that the engine installed was not the appropriate engine. The dealer disregarded the information and informed the contact that he would be responsible for the cost of the repair. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 12,000.

  • Manufacturer: General Motors LLC
  • Components: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE
  • Summary: General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2016-2018 Chevrolet Cruze LS vehicles, equipped with a gasoline engine and a tire inflator kit instead of a spare tire. The vehicles may leak gasoline following a rear-impact crash and a rollover. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 301, "Fuel System Integrity."
  • Consequence: A fuel leak, in the presence of an ignition source, increases the risk of a fire.
  • Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will install a lock-ring on the fuel tank that will shield the fuel tank vapor pressure sensor from damage in a rear-impact crash, free of charge. The recall began June 7, 2018. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020. GM's number for this recall is 18159.

Negative 2018 Chevrolet Cruze car reviews

I recently got this as a rental car while my 2015 Kia Optima LX is being repaired for minor body damage. Although the Chevy had good advertising, I found that my Kia has more power, better features, a better radio, and is more comfortable. It's quite astonishing how much better my Kia is in comparison.

The 2018 diesel manual shift has been plagued with numerous issues, including clutch, transmission, diesel filter, and tire problems. Even a single pothole can cause issues with the low profile tires.

I purchased a 2018 Lt Hatchback brand new in 2018 and have driven it for 33,000 miles. Despite commuting through New York City daily for work, it still gets an average of 33-35 miles per gallon and about 45-48 MPG on longer drives. The car is quite comfortable with leg room to spare in both the front and rear seats. I'm 61 and another average size adult can comfortably sit behind me. The Apple care works very well, the back-up camera is very clear, and the trunk space is useful. I've carried everything from groceries to potting soil without any issues. However, there are some cons to consider. The car does not hold its value well, and within a year of owning it, I noticed that used ones with the same mileage were worth practically nothing. The transmission is not as responsive as it should be, sometimes shifting too fast and sometimes revving at very high RPMs. Knock sensor codes are constantly popping up with the use of regular gas, and there are traction control system issues. The car sways over small bumps and makes clonking noises over rough roads (Chevy mechanics can't find the issue). The transmission jerks going into reverse, and the audio system is absolute garbage with speakers that fumble a lot. The engine vibrates a lot and loses traction easily in wet/damp conditions. The auto stop continues to enable itself at 3-5 miles while in traffic, causing the entire car to jerk. Despite these cons, I still find the car to be a reliable and comfortable choice for my daily commute.

I had a 2018 Chevy Cruz that experienced numerous engine problems, oil leaks, and misfires. In my experience, this company does not prioritize customer service. Therefore, I cannot recommend them to anyone.

The car feels really solid, and the acceleration is okay. Once the turbo spools up, you get a quick initial shove, that quickly disappears in higher rpms. I did spin the tires while making a right turn onto a highway (grins widely). I loved that part. However, I was honestly disappointed about how little horsepower the car has. I think the older 2.0 Luz engine might have performed exponentially better in real world driving situations as opposed to the 1.6l Whisper diesel I drove today. Lastly, the fuel economy was horrendous! I was only getting 7.5mpg mostly driving city! Even though the car salesman put a half tank of fuel in it before we test drove it. Overall, I mostly liked the faint clatter and growl of the little diesel and pretended I was driving a little truck. Based on my overall assessment of my little diesel dinosaur, I would give the 2018 Chevy Cruze diesel a rating of 4 out of 5 stars.

Positive 2018 Chevrolet Cruze car reviews

I have a 2018 Cruze with the 1.4 turbo motor and the 6 speed manual. I consistently achieve high 30s to low 40s mpg, which is impressive. However, I have noticed a ticking sound at idle with the clutch not engaged. Despite multiple visits to the dealer and several times in the shop, Chevrolet insists that it is a normal sound. This issue is noticeable even from inside the car at a stop light in the backseat, as my kids have pointed out. If anyone else is experiencing this same issue, please let me know. Thank you.

I've owned this vehicle since it was brand new, and I absolutely love it! Even after 6 years of ownership, it still holds up and has great features that were standard back in 2018. I've never had any mechanical issues, just regular oil changes. The handling is great, and the speed and acceleration are good. There is a bit of lag from the turbo, but the car still accelerates quickly when overtaking another vehicle. The braking performance is excellent, and I always feel in control while driving. My wife, who drives a Jeep, always comments on how zippy and responsive my car is. Plus, it's incredibly fuel efficient! During my mostly highway commute, I consistently get 40-42 mpg, and 36-38 mpg in the city. On multiple road trips, I've even seen averages above 50 mpg! Overall, I'm extremely satisfied and happy with my purchase. If I could go back in time, I would buy it again without hesitation!

You'll love the great fuel economy, good value, sporty looks and performance, and easy-to-use technology, even in the base LS model. The only thing missing is cruise control in the base model.

  4. Werner Wolff 2024-08-28

From day 1, I had a defective transmission. Despite needing my car towed in after it stopped in traffic, the dealer only took me seriously after I persisted and demanded that they finally fix it.

  5. Oliver McDermott 2024-08-02

This car has plenty of power for highway cruising and passing along with great tech. My only problem with the car is that the auto start-stop feature works only sometimes. Overall, it's a great car.
