2017 Chevrolet Cruze problems

The Chevrolet Cruze is a compact car that has been produced by General Motors since 2008. It was designated as a globally developed, designed, and manufactured four-door compact sedan, complemented by a five-door hatchback body variant from 2011, and a station wagon in 2012. During its introduction, the Cruze replaces several compact models, including the Chevrolet Optra which was sold internationally under various names, the Chevrolet Cobalt sold exclusively in North America, and the Australasian-market Holden Astra.
The Cruze was released in 2008 for the South Korean market as the Daewoo Lacetti Premiere until the phasing out of the Daewoo brand in 2011, when it was renamed to Chevrolet Cruze. In Australasia, the model was sold between 2009 and 2016 as the Holden Cruze. In 2016, the Cruze sedan was restyled and renamed for the Australasian market as the Holden Astra Sedan, as a sedan complement to the Holden Astra family.
Due to the market shift towards SUVs and decreasing sales, the Cruze has been gradually phased out. Production of the Cruze in South Korea ended in 2018 as part of restructuring of GM Korea, which in turn ceased supply of the Holden Astra Sedan to Australasia. In the United States and Mexico, production ended in 2019, while production in China ended in 2020. Production continued in Argentina until 2023. It was replaced by the Monza in China, which is known as the Cavalier in Mexico.
Previously, the nameplate has been used for a version of a subcompact hatchback car produced under a joint venture with Suzuki from 2001 to 2007, and was based on the Suzuki Ignis.

The dealership believes at least one of the pistons needs to be replaced. The car is available for inspection. The car is unreliable to drive, as I drove up a freeway incline it slowed to a dangerously low speed for freeway driving. The dealership has confirmed they believe it is an issue with the piston but will not confirm without charging $2800 to dismantle the car and are not able to guarantee they will be able to fix the issue. Diagnostics were run on the car at Putnam Chevrolet in Burlingame CA. There were no warning lamps or messages prior to a major issue with the cars functionality. The issue first appeared June 15, 2023 without any warning. The engine light came on and the car was not functioning properly, plus a notification to "service Stabilitrek". 2017 Chevrolet Cruze recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 2 recalls for different components of the 2017 Chevrolet Cruze.
- Manufacturer: General Motors LLC
- Components: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE
- Summary: General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2016-2018 Chevrolet Cruze LS vehicles, equipped with a gasoline engine and a tire inflator kit instead of a spare tire. The vehicles may leak gasoline following a rear-impact crash and a rollover. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 301, "Fuel System Integrity."
- Consequence: A fuel leak, in the presence of an ignition source, increases the risk of a fire.
- Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will install a lock-ring on the fuel tank that will shield the fuel tank vapor pressure sensor from damage in a rear-impact crash, free of charge. The recall began June 7, 2018. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020. GM's number for this recall is 18159.
- Manufacturer: General Motors LLC
- Components: SEATS:FRONT ASSEMBLY:HEAD RESTRAINT
- Summary: General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2016-2017 Chevrolet Cruze vehicles. A bracket used in the driver or front passenger seat-back recliner mechanism may have been incorrectly welded to the seat-back frame, as a result, in the event of a crash, the head-restraints may not function properly. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 202a, "Head Restraints."
- Consequence: In a crash, the seat-backs for the front seats may break, increasing the risk of injury to the occupants.
- Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the front passenger seats, replacing any with seat-back frames that are incorrectly welded, free of charge. The recall began on February 28, 2017. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020. GM's number for this recall is 17035.

I'm so glad to hear that you had a great experience with your 2014 Cruze! It's wonderful that you decided to lease the 2017 model once your current lease expired. The new and improved Cruze is truly exceptional in every way imaginable. The handling, safety, appearance, technology, visibility, fuel efficiency, and rear seat room have all been improved, making it the perfect vehicle to take you back and forth from school. If you're worried about the start/stop technology, don't be! It's a seamless transition and you won't even notice the engine turning off as you stop at a red light. The kinetic blue with the RS package looks fantastic, and I'm so glad to hear that the Apple Car Play works perfectly with your phone. It sounds like you made the right choice between this and the Civic, and the dealership's great offer was the icing on the cake!
-
I've always owned Asian and German cars, but I decided to try an American car and went with the Cruze. I was pleasantly surprised with how smooth it drives and the beautiful interior design. As a 6 ft guy, I find the front seats very comfortable, and even though the back seat could have more headroom, it's still comfortable for a small car. In my opinion, the hatchback is even more comfortable than the sedan. The auto start and stop feature is awesome, with a very smooth transition that you won't even notice. It's much better than BMW's auto start feature, which is not as smooth as Chevy's. The car is very quiet and smooth on the road, and you barely feel harsh roads. As a commuter, I don't care much about power, and the MPG is amazing. I'm also impressed with the technology, and I'm sure Chevrolet will continue to improve this car. Overall, I'm very satisfied with this car!

The last time I owned a Chevy was 20 years ago. I bought a Subaru after that, which lasted for 20 years with few complaints. The only reason I did not buy another one is that it moved out of my budget. The last Chevy I owned required a lot of maintenance, but Chevy's quality has improved dramatically since then. However, there is still some driver window air noise, and the paint is still suspect as it scratches too easily. The trunk space is also lacking, and it cannot fit golf clubs without the back seats down. On the bright side, the mileage is phenomenal, achieving 41 mpg+ on the highway and 33 mpg combined. I opted for the Bose sound system, and it provides great sound. The car is quite comfortable, and I drove several hours on a road trip with no seat fatigue. They could put a 3 sec. delay in the Auto-Stop feature, for when a stop is only temporary, but you can crawl through a stop sign or kick it in neutral if you want to bypass it. I think this would be a better car for a young person, as it has all the communications you could ask for. It has good acceleration, handles well except in deep snow, and is fun to drive. ***2020 update*** I now have 25,000 trouble-free miles on my Cruze hatchback. I put 5500 miles on from two road trips. The mileage is still excellent, actually achieving 55 mpg on long, flat, straightaways. Nice touring car! After putting a bug deflector on, I have not had any more stone chips in the hood. The resale value seems to be holding up now, probably because more people are discovering the value in this car. ***2021 Update*** Still going strong four years after purchase with no issues! UPDATE*** No problems! 2022 Update*** No problems! 2023 Update*** No problems! 2023 UPDATE ***No Problems 2024 Update*** No problems!

I am confident in my decision to not purchase another one of these cars. Despite my initial love for the car, it developed a severe engine miss after only 12000 miles, and although the dealer found no problem, the issue persisted. The dealer eventually replaced the pistons, but the car continued to have problems, including an oil leak that required repair. After experiencing a no-start issue, I returned the car to the dealer and am currently driving a rental car. Given these issues, I am not convinced that another one of these cars would be a wise investment.

When I compared this vehicle to the foreign cars that I owned in the past, I found it to be superior in terms of ride, technology system integration, price, interior/exterior design, and safety. As someone who has always owned foreign cars - three (3) Nissans and four (4) Mercedes - I never thought I would own an American-made car. However, this car has exceeded my expectations and provides great use for my business when I am away from the office. I am always connected to the internet.

If you live in a cold climate, it may be best to avoid purchasing this engine for your Chevy vehicle. Unfortunately, the turbo has been known to freeze, causing the car to go into safe mode and requiring a visit to the shop. This issue has been ongoing for two years and, despite bulletins being posted by Chevy dealers, there is still no fix for the problem. It is disappointing that Chevy is not standing behind their product, especially since this issue is well-known. I understand your frustration and hope that a solution can be found soon.
Emery Cronin 2025-06-22
After reading several positive reviews, we decided to make the purchase. However, we later experienced some issues with the engine. In hindsight, we should have read the negative reviews as well. It is disappointing to have to replace the engine at only 70,000 miles, despite our regular maintenance and oil changes. We are still making car payments and now have to pay for a new engine. It is frustrating that GM is aware of these issues but continues to sell this model. We have heard similar stories from others who are also struggling with the same problem.

Within 90 days my new 2017 Chevy Cruze stopped on me in the middle of an intersection. Luckily, two kind-hearted strangers helped me push the car to safety. Although the check engine light came on, when I took the car in, they said nothing was wrong with it. However, the On-Star notification indicated that there was a critical engine and transmission repair needed. When I contacted the Chevy dealership, they kindly suggested that I bring it back if it breaks down again, as they cannot find anything wrong with it. Thank you for your understanding!

Sorry to hear that you are disappointed.

The 'auto stop' feature on the 2017 Cruze can be a bit inconvenient in certain situations, such as when trying to get out of a busy parking lot or when driving behind a school bus. However, it is important to note that this feature is designed to improve fuel efficiency and reduce emissions. While it may take some getting used to, the benefits of this feature are worth it in the long run. It's also worth mentioning that Chevy has designed the Cruze with the latest technology and safety features, making it a reliable and efficient choice for drivers.
