1997 Chevrolet Camaro problems
The Chevrolet Camaro is a mid-size American automobile manufactured by Chevrolet, classified as a pony car. It first went on sale on September 29, 1966, for the 1967 model year and was designed to compete with the Ford Mustang. The Camaro shared its platform and major components with the Firebird, produced by General Motors' Pontiac division that was also introduced for 1967.
Four distinct generations of the Camaro were developed before production ended in 2002. The nameplate was revived on a concept car that evolved into the fifth-generation Camaro; production started on March 16, 2009.
The Camaro was discontinued at the end of the 2024 model year. Production ended in December 2023. However, Chevrolet has stated, "This is not the end of Camaro's story."

Common 1997 Chevrolet Camaro problems
The 1997 Chevrolet Camaro is known for several common problems that owners have reported over the years. These issues range from engine problems to electrical system malfunctions and even cosmetic concerns. Here are some of the most prevalent issues with the 1997 Chevrolet Camaro:
- Rear Intake Manifold Leaking: This is a common issue with the 1993-1997 Camaros, where the rear intake manifold can leak, causing coolant or oil leaks. This issue can lead to severe engine damage if not detected and addressed early.
- Bad Opti-spark Units: The 1993-1997 Camaros are also known for having bad Opti-spark units, which can cause intermittent misfires and other engine performance issues.
- Failed Power Window Motors: This is another common problem with the 1993-1997 Camaros, where the power window motors can fail, making it difficult to operate the windows.
- Rear End Issues: The 1997 Camaro's rear end is known to have issues with drag radial tires, which can cause the rear end to break if not used properly. It is recommended to use tires that are appropriate for the car's power output and driving style.
- Brake Pedal Wear: The inner right brake pedal can wear out if the car has seen a lot of stop-and-go traffic, indicating that the car has been driven hard or in city traffic.
- Intake Manifold Gasket Leaks: Camaros produced between 1993 and 2010 can develop a leak around the intake manifold gasket, causing the car to lose engine oil or coolant. This issue can lead to severe engine damage if not detected and addressed early.
- Anti-theft System Issues: Camaros from model years 1995 to 2015 can have issues with the anti-theft system, where the security light comes on and the car won't start. This issue is due to the anti-theft system with raised chip keys, which can break within the steering column.
- Fuel Pump Failures: Camaros manufactured between 1999 and 2002 can have fuel pump failures if the fuel pump filter isn't replaced when needed. This issue can cause difficulty starting the car, sudden engine stalls, engine misfires, reduced power, and hesitant acceleration.
- Window Regulator Rivets Failure: Camaros from the model years 1984 to 2002 have a faulty design that allows the windows to lean towards the cabin, causing a metal-on-glass rattle when rolling down the windows. This issue can lead to window regulator rivets failure, preventing the windows from staying upright and causing wear on the pads in the door due to pressure.
- Water Leaks: Camaros featuring T-tops manufactured between 1990 and 2002 can have water leaks, where water can leak into the car and cause damage to the vehicle's interior and headliner.
- Leaks Around the Water Pump: Camaros from the model years 1990 to 2011 can have leaks around the water pump, causing the coolant to escape and causing the engine to overheat.
It is important to note that not all 1997 Camaros will experience these issues, and many owners have reported having no significant problems with their cars. However, potential buyers should be aware of these common problems and consider them when purchasing a used 1997 Camaro. Regular maintenance and inspections can help prevent or detect these issues early, potentially saving owners from costly repairs.

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2015-12-24
- VIN: 2G1FP22P4V2
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: THIS CAR IS A 97 Z28 WITH THE 350CI MOTOR AND 4 SPEED AUTO TRANSMISSION. WHAT HAPPENS IS THAT WHEN THE FRONT WHEELS ARE NOT TURNING, THE REAR BRAKES DO NOT ENGAGE, NO MATTER HOW HARD YOU PUSH DOWN ON THE BRAKE PEDAL. THE ISSUE PRESENTS ITSELF UNDER ICY CONDITIONS. THE FIRST TIME IT HAPPENED WAS WHEN I PULLED INTO A SPOT AT A FAST FOOD PLACE, THE PARKING SPOT WAS ICY WHILE THE REST OF THE LOT WAS ICE FREE. AS I PULLED INTO THE SPOT, I PUT ON MY BRAKES AND THE FRONT WHEELS STOPPED, BUT THE REAR DID NOT. THEY WERE ON THE CLEAR PART OF THE PARKING LOT AND THEY SHOULD HAVE STOPPED MY FORWARD MOTION, HOWEVER THEY DID NOT. SLID AHEAD UNTIL THE FRONT HIT THE SNOW BANK. THOUGHT THIS WAS UNUSUAL, BUT DIDN'T CONCERN MYSELF ABOUT IT ANY MORE. NEXT TIME I BECAME AWARE OF THE PROBLEM WAS WHEN I HAD THE REAR (BOTH) WHEELS OF THE CAR OFF THE GROUND AND I PUT THE CAR IN DRIVE AS I WANTED TO CHECK IF ONE OF THE REAR RIMS WAS BENT. WELL NO IT WASN'T BUT WHEN I GOT BACK IN THE CAR TO PUT IT IN PARK, I PRESSED ON THE BRAKE PEDAL TO STOP THE REAR WHEELS FROM TURNING, AND THEN WENT TO PUT THE GEAR SHIFT LEVER IN PARK. BIG GRINDING NOISE. SO I PRESSED HARDER ON THE BRAKE AND TRIED TO PUT IT IN PARK AGAIN, AGAIN BIG GRINDING NOISE. SO I LOOKED AT THE REAR WHEELS WHILE PRESSING THE BRAKE, AND WHAT TO MY SURPRISE, THE REAR WHEELS DO NOT STOP! THIS CAN'T BE A GOOD THING. TODAY AS I BACKED OUT OF THE GARAGE, THE DRIVEWAY WAS A LITTLE ICY. SO AS I BACKED UP, I PUT ON THE BRAKES, AND OF COURSE, ONLY THE FRONT WHEELS STOPPED AND THE REAR WHEELS KEPT PULLING THE CAR DOWN THE DRIVEWAY. NOT A GOOD THING IF A CAR IS PASSING BY ON THE STREET. SO WHAT'S UP WITH THIS. YES MY CHECK ENGINE LIGHT IS ON, BUT I WAS TOLD BY THE CHEV DEALER THAT IT IS FROM THE TRANSMISSION BECAUSE SOMETIMES, WHEN IT IS HOT, IT WILL SHIFT HARD.
EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2013-05-05
- VIN: 2G1FP22P5V2
- Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
- Summary: 1997 THROUGH 2002 CAMARO'S EQUIPPED WITH DAYTIME RUNNING LIGHTS MAY EXPERIENCE FAILURES OF TURN SIGNALS. FAILURES INCLUDE FAILURE OF TURN SIGNALS TO ILLUMINATE OR FAILURE TO BLINK. FAILURES MAY ALSO INCLUDE PREMATURE BULB FAILURE TO HEADLIGHTS, TURN SIGNALS (FRONT AND REAR), AND PARKING LIGHTS. I HAVE ENCOUNTERED NUMEROUS VEHICLES WITH FRONT AND REAR TURN SIGNAL SOCKETS BURNED/ SHORTED. THE TURN SIGNALS OPERATE THROUGH THE DAYTIME RUNNING LIGHT MODULE AND MODULE IS PRONE TO FAILURE/ OVERHEAT/ SHORTING CAUSING FAILURE OF TURN SIGNALS. WIRING TO DTRL MODULE IN DASH BEHIND RADIO IS OFTEN OVERHEATED OR BURNED CAUSING INTERMITTENT OR COMPLETE LOSS OF FUNCTION TO TURN SIGNALS. LOSS OF TURN SIGNAL FUNCTION CAN CAUSE ACCIDENTS AND WIRING SHORTS FROM OVERHEAT CONDITIONS MAY LEAD TO IN DASH FIRES OR ISOLATED FIRES WITHIN EXTERIOR LAMPS.OVERHEATED IN DASH WIRING MAY CAUSE DAMAGE TO OTHER SYSTEMS OR COMPONENTS. *TR

THE CONSEQUENCES COULD BE DEVASTATING AS I LIVE IN A TOWN THAT HAS A HIGH CRIME RATE AS IN CARJACKING. I ALSO HAVE MY TODDLER IN HIS CARSEAT AND THE WIND HAS CAUSED HIM TO STOP BREATHING FOR A MOMENT AND SCARED ME TO NO END. THEN I CAN NOT CARRY A CHILD WITH ASTHMA BECAUSE OF THE WIND/AIR WILL CAUSE HIM TO HAVE AN ATTACK. I AM CURRENTLY TRYING TO RAISE THE MONEY TO REPAIR THE PROBLEM. I RESEARCHED THE PROBLEM ON-LINE AND DISCOVERED THIS IS A PROBLEM WITH THE CAMARO'S AND IT'S NOT A SMALL PROBLEM. NOW I AM FORCED TO HAVE MY CAR OPEN TO THEFT AS I CAN'T ROLL MY WINDOW UP AND I CAN NOT CARRY MY PRECIOUS CARGO AS IT IS UNSAFE TO THERE HEALTH. I CAN'T IMAGINE IF IT WERE TO RAIN I WOULD NOT BE ABLE TO DRIVE IT MYSELF..THE INJURIES WERE TO THE TODDLER WHOM STOPPED BREATHING DUE TO MUCH AIR FLOW IN HIS FACE BECAUSE I WAS UNABLE TO PUT THE WINDOW UP. *TR

WE GOT IN THE CAR AND ATTEMPTED TO CLOSE THE DOORS AND THEY KEPT SWINGING OPEN. NEITHER DOOR WOULD CLOSE. WE HAD TO DRIVE HOME HOLDING THE DOORS CLOSED. ONCE HOME WE WERE ABLE TO TAKE A LOOK AT THE DOORS TO SEE WHAT MIGHT BE CAUSING IT. THE DRIVER DOOR TURNED OUT TO BE FIXABLE, FOR THE TIME BEING, THE THING THAT LATCHES THE DOOR WAS STUCK IN THE CLOSED POSITION SO WE JUST OPENED IT AND IT WAS FINE. THE PASSENGER DOOR, WE COULDN'T FIGURE OUT AT ALL. ABOUT A WEEK LATER THE DRIVER DOOR STOPPED CLOSING ALL TOGETHER AS WELL. WE HAVE NOT BEEN ABLE TO GET THE DOORS FIXED BECAUSE WE ARE NOT SURE WHAT HAS HAPPENED AND WE CAN'T AFFORD TO JUST TAKE IT IN AND HAVE IT DONE BY THE DEALERSHIP.*AK

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2001-01-08
- VIN: 2G1FP32K0V2
- Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
- Summary: WITHIN 5 MONTHS OF PURCHASE (THE MILEAGE WAS 59585 WHEN ISSUES BEGAN) I BEGAN HAVING ISSUES WITH THE ENGINE, AND TOOK MY CAR TO THE DEALERSHIP OVER 10 TIMES OVER THE NEXT YEAR, AND WAS CHARGED $500 EVERY TIME FOR THEM TO PUT NEW SPARK PLUGS AND WIRES AND SEND ME HOME ONLY TO COME BACK A MONTH LATER WITH THE SAME PROBLEM ONLY WORSE. THIS LASTED UNTIL MY WARRANTY EXPIRED AND THEN I WAS TOLD I NEEDED A NEW ENGINE. I FILED A COMPLAINT WITH THE BBB (#CHV0230345) AND IT WAS ACCEPTED FOR ARBITRATION BUT THE MANUFACTURER NEVER CONTACTED ME AS THEY WERE SUPPOSED TO AND I CAN NOT GET A RESPONSE. I HAVE HAD TO REPLACE THE MOTOR AND THE CATALYTIC CONVERTER TWICE AND NOW THE CAR WILL NOT EVEN START. I ALWAYS TOOK MY CAR TO THE DEALERSHIP SO THAT IT WOULD BE PROPERLY SERVICED, AND I AM VERY UPSET AND AM PLANNING ON SEEKING REIMBURSEMENT, COMPENSATION AND A VEHICLE THAT WORKS. I SEE THAT THERE WERE MANY BULLETINS SENT OUT REGARDING THE SAME ISSUES AND HAVE SPOKEN TO OTHER 1997 CAMARO OWNERS WHO ARE ALSO VERY UPSET AND HAVE THE SAME ISSUES, AND WE ARE SEEKING TO FILE A CLASS ACTION SUIT. EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-11-24
- Crash: 1

- Summary: THE CAMARO, FIREBIRD, CORVETTE, AND SOME GM MINIVANS USE THE FRONT TURN SIGNAL LAMPS FOR DAYTIME RUNNING LAMPS. WHEN ONE OF THESE FAILS, THE OTHER BULB IS CONTINUOUSLY ILLUMINATED, WHICH CAN BE MISCONTRUED AS A FAULTY TURN SIGNAL. SUCH CONFUSION ON THE PART OF OTHER MOTORISTS OR PEDESTRIANS CAN EASILY LEAD TO A CRASH. SUGGESTED COURSE OF ACTION: RECALL ALL SUCH 1997-2003 VEHICLES AND DISCONNECT DRLS OR REWIRE DRLS SUCH THAT A SINGLE BULB OUTAGE WILL EXTINGUISH BOTH LAMPS. THE SAME APPLIES TO THE GM FULL SIZE TRUCKS, BUT TO A LESSER EXTENT BECAUSE THEY USE DEDICATED FUNCTION WHITE LAMPS FOR DRLS INSTEAD OF THE AMBER TURN SIGNALS. DT

The 1997 Camaro RS is a really reliable car. You won't have any problems with it, either mechanically or cosmetically. Just take good care of it and it will stay in great shape. I definitely recommend this Camaro.
-
Hi there! I just wanted to share my experience with Camaros. This is actually my second one, the first being a 1996 V6. I've always been a fan of the Z28's ever since I drove my friend's '94. Even though these cars are a bit older, the Z28's are still one of the coolest cars on the road. Every time I hit the gas pedal, I get an adrenaline rush! Of course, if you're looking for a car to drive every day, you might want to consider an Accord or Camry. But if you're looking for speed and horsepower, then this is definitely the car for you. I'm so excited that GM will be bringing the Camaro back in 2009, although I wish it was sooner!

I've owned my Camaro for just over 6 years and I'm happy to say that I've never had any noteworthy problems with it. One of my favorite features is its sporty looks, and I also appreciate its affordable price. While the car may feel a bit heavy and not as fun to drive, I still believe it's one of the best values for the money. If I had to make the decision again, with my finances six years ago and my ownership experience six years after, I would buy it without any hesitation.

Congratulations on your first car! It sounds like you made an excellent choice with your slightly used 1997 Camaro RS. It's great to hear that it has been reliable and eye-catching. I'm sure you turn heads when you're driving around. The interior sounds like it has a lot of potential for customization, especially with the clear AC control knobs and the accents that can be painted to match the car's color. Thanks for sharing your experience with us!

It's great to share that I've had the pleasure of owning two Camaros! The first one was a Z28 (with the LT1), and this one is a standard coupe (with the L36 V6). I must say, both are an absolute pleasure to drive. Even though the L36 is factory rated at 200hp at the flywheel and 3.08 rear, it's surprisingly powerful. Both cars have the 4L60E 4 speed automatic transmission, which has near-perfect shift, especially at WOT. The L36 car is more inexpensive to maintain and insure, which is a great benefit. It's still a head-turner at the car show and at the track. Both cars have plenty of aftermarket and custom performance products that they can share, with the obvious exception being the motor.

Beautiful sleek styling, immense torque, good handling. A true high-tech muscle car that is comfortable and reliable, offering a lot of bang for the buck. Long live the F-body!

This car has a surprising amount of power with 200 hp/tq, but unfortunately it doesn't handle well in most situations except for sunny days. Despite its light backend, it's easy to slip on just about any surface. Although I was disappointed with the numerous problems and replacement parts I had to deal with after purchasing a car with 20,000 miles on it, I was pleasantly surprised by its decent gas mileage and ability to carry a lot of cargo. However, I wouldn't recommend taking a road trip in this car as it can be uncomfortable for long periods of time, especially with the pretty much useless and uncomfortable backseats. Please read on for more information.

The car seems to be mechanically sound, but unfortunately the comfort leaves much to be desired. Every small bump on the road can be felt and it can be difficult to get comfortable. The stereo system is not very impressive. Additionally, the car does not handle well in the rain as the brakes tend to lock up. The interior is also lacking in quality. Furthermore, the clutch pedal is difficult to reach, even for someone of my height (5'7). Overall, I would not recommend this car to anyone. An automatic option may be a better choice.

This is my first car and I'm loving it. Not only does it look good, but it also performs well. There's nothing like cruising with T-tops.
