The Chevrolet Camaro is a mid-size American automobile manufactured by Chevrolet, classified as a pony car. It first went on sale on September 29, 1966, for the 1967 model year and was designed to compete with the Ford Mustang. The Camaro shared its platform and major components with the Firebird, produced by General Motors' Pontiac division that was also introduced for 1967.

Four distinct generations of the Camaro were developed before production ended in 2002. The nameplate was revived on a concept car that evolved into the fifth-generation Camaro; production started on March 16, 2009.

The Camaro was discontinued at the end of the 2024 model year. Production ended in December 2023. However, Chevrolet has stated, "This is not the end of Camaro's story."

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2008-09-01
  • VIN: 2G1FP22G322
  • Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: 2002 CHEVROLET CAMARO SS. CONSUMER STATES ENGINE FAILURE DUE TO WIRING HARNESS PLACEMENT. *TGW ACCORDING TO THE DEALERSHIP, THE NUMBER 7 CYLINDER MAY HAVE PASSED COMPRESSED LIQUID, MOST LIKELY FUEL THAT CAUSED THE PISTON AND ROD TO BE DAMAGED. IT CAUSED DAMAGE TO THE CYLINDER WALL WHICH REQUIRED REPLACEMENT OF THE ENGINE. THE TECHNICIAN ALSO INDICATED THAT THE NUMBER 8 CYLINDER WAS DAMAGED. THE DEALER STATED THE CAUSE FOR THE FUEL INJECTORS REMAINING IN THE OPEN POSITION WAS THE WIRING CONTROLLING THE FUEL INJECTORS WAS CHAFED AND MAKING CONTACT WITH THE BULKHEAD WHICH GROUNDED THE WIRING. THE CONSUMER STATED ONE DAY HE STARTED THE VEHICLE AND WHITE SMOKE EMITTED FROM THE EXHAUST, HE SHUT THE VEHICLE OFF AND LET IT SIT IN THE DRIVEWAY. THE CONSUMER STATED THE DISTANCE OF THE WIRING FROM THE BULKHEAD IS LESS THAN 1/4 OF AN INCH, THE PCM CAN BE MADE TO MOVE JUST UNDER 1/2 INCH WHICH WOULD BE ENOUGH DISTANCE FOR THE WIRES TO MAKE CONTACT WITH THE BULKHEAD. IT WOULD INDICATE THAT OVER TIME, VIBRATION FROM DRIVING CONDITIONS WOULD CAUSE THE PCM TO MOVE BACK AND FORTH WHICH STRONGLY SUGGEST A FLAW IN THE POSITIONING OF THE PCM. THERE WAS EVIDENCE TO SUGGEST THAT AN OUTSIDE SOURCE CAUSED THE WIRING TO CHAFE, SUCH AS RODENTS NESTING IN THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT. *JB

  • Summary: MY 2002 GM CHEVROLET CAMARO'S ABS BRAKE SYSTEM HAS FAILED.THERE WERE NO INCIDENTS THAT LED UP TO THE FAILURE OF THE COMPONENT. AS TO DATE 03/02/2010 MY ABS BRAKING SYSTEM IS INOPERABLE,I HAVE NO ABS. ONLY A WARNING LIGHT TELLING ME I HAVE NO ABS. THE FAILURE OCCURRED APPROX. 11/2 YEARS AGO,AND SINCE IT WAS NOT UNDER WARRANTY GM WILL NOT FIX THIS PROBLEM.AGAIN I BELIEVE THAT GM KNOWS OF THIS FAILURE IN THEIR SYSTEMS(ABS..ANTI-LOCK BRAKING SYSTEM)THE COST TO REPAIR OR REPLACE THIS ABS COMPONENTS IS APPRX.$2,500.00. MY INQUIRES WITH OTHER GM OWNERS OF OTHER MODELS IE;CORVETTE STATE THE SAME PROBLEMS AS THE CAMAROS. FAILURE OF THIS COMPONENTS IS VERY CRITICAL FOR SAFETY IN PREVENTING WHEELS FROM LOCKING UP AND CAUSING A SKID LEADING TO A VERY DANGEROUS ACCIDENT.(THE MAIN REASON CONSUMERS WANT ANTI-LOCK BRAKES!) *TR

EQUIPMENT,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2002-03-10
  • VIN: 2G1FP22G322
  • Components: EQUIPMENT,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: MY COMPLAINT IS WITH A GM PRODUCT..A 2002 CHEVROLET CAMARO. NOT LONG AFTER PURCHASE (APPRX) LESS THAN A FEW MONTHS OF TAKING POSSESSION OF MY "NEW" VEHICLE THE DRIVERS SIDE WINDOW REGULATOR(POWER ASSISTED ) WAS HAVING PROBLEMS...THE REGULATOR WOULD STICK IN ANY POSITION UP/DOWN AND WOULD NOT OPERATE CORRECTLY . THE VEHICLE WAS UNDER WARRANTY AND WAS REPAIRED..THE REGULATOR ON THE PASSENGER SIDE THEN WENT OUT THE SAME WAY NOT LONG AFTER...AGAIN IT WAS REPAIRED.THIS PROBLEM HAS RE-OCCURRED SEVERAL TIMES SINCE 2002 TO THE PRESENT DATE AS OF 03/02/2010.I HAVE SPOKEN TO MANY CAMARO OWNERS AND THE RESPONSE IS EXACTLY THE SAME...WE ALL KNOW THAT OUR VEHICLE (CAMAROS) DO "THAT" . FIRST OF ALL THE CARS ARE NOW OUT OF WARRANTY AND THE FINANCIAL RESPONSIBILITY FALLS ON US ! THESE REPAIRS CAN EXCEED $500.00 DOLLARS. THERE IS NO DOUBT GM KNOWS OF THIS. I HAVE SPOKEN TO MANY OTHER CAMARO OWNERS AND ALL SAY THAT AN AFTERMARKET WINDOW REGULATOR SOLVED THEIR PROBLEM,ITS OBVIOUSLY DEFECTIVE WINDOW REGULATORS PERMIATED THERE STOCK AND GM REPLACED THEM WITH THE SAME DEFECTIVE PARTS. THESE PROBLEMS OCCURRED WITHOUT INCIDENT IE; ACCIDENTS,MISUSE ETC. FAILURE OF THESE COMPONENTS ARE VERY DANGEROUS, IF A DRIVER BECOMES TRAPPED INSIDE HIS/HER VEHICLE AND CANNOT EXIT THROUGH THE DOOR NORMALLY AND HAS TO DEPEND ON THE WINDOW AS AN EXIT THEY WILL BECOME TRAPPED INSIDE THAT VEHICLE AND COULD BE SERIOUSLY INJURED OR KILLED. NOT BEING ABLE TO ROLL THE WINDOWS UP OR DOWN WHEN NEEDED CAN BE VERY DANGEROUS (IE. FLOODS,FIRE,,SUBMERGED VEHICLE OR ASSAILANT.) *TR

  • Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING,FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2002 CHEVROLET CAMARO. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE CONTROL BOX IN THE ENGINE, LOCATED NEAR THE FIREWALL, CAUSED THE FUEL INJECTORS TO POUR FUEL INTO THE ENGINE. AS A RESULT, THE ENGINE WAS RUINED. WHEN THE VEHICLE WAS STARTED, WHITE SMOKE APPEARED FROM THE EXHAUST. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE DEALER, BUT THEY WENT OUT OF BUSINESS. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO ANOTHER DEALER AND THEY REPLACED THE ENTIRE ENGINE. THE MANUFACTURER OFFERED HIM A 10% DISCOUNT AND THE CONTACT PAID $6,200 FOR THE REPAIR. THE CONTACT HAS A PHOTO OF WHERE THE BOX WAS LOCATED IN THE ENGINE, WHICH HE FELT WAS TOO CLOSE TO THE FIREWALL AND THE INITIAL CAUSE OF THE FAILURE. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGES WERE APPROXIMATELY 44,000. UPDATED 1/26/09 *CN THE CONSUMER WAS THE NUMBER 7 CYLINDER MAY HAVE COMPRESSED LIQUID, MOST LIKELY FUEL THAT CAUSED THE PISTON AND ROD TO BE DAMAGED. IT CAUSED DAMAGED TO THE CYLINDER WALL WHICH REQUIRED THE REPLACEMENT OF THE ENGINE. WHILE ACCELERATING ON AN ENTRANCE RAMP, THE CAR WILL NOT SHIFT PROPERLY; VERY ROUGH AND THE RPM'S GO TO 4000 OR ABOVE BEFORE SHIFTING OR IF I LET OFF THE ACCELERATOR. I AM TERRIFIED THAT THE TRANSMISSION IS GOING TO COME OUT COMPLETELY WHILE DRIVING WITH MY FAMILY IN THE VEHICLE; I AM TAKING THE CAR TO A MECHANIC TO HAVE IT LOOKED AT. SINCE THEN THE LEFT SIDE HAS GONE OUT 3 MORE TIMES IN THE LAST YEAR COSTING $45.00 EACH TIME. IT IS IMPOSSBLE TO REACH THE BULB TO REPLACE IT YOURSELF. DEALER INSISTS THAT THE PARKING LENS WAS CRACKED CAUSING MOISTURE TO ENTER THE SOCKET. WHEN INSEPCTING THE VEHICLE, THERE IS NO CRACK.. NOW THEY SAY ITS THE SEAL AROUND THE PARKING LENS. I JUST REPLACED ANOTHER BURNT OUT BULB 6 WEEKS AGO AND IT HAPPENED AGAIN. IT ALSO HAS NOT RAINED TO CAUSE ANY MOISTURE IN THE LAST 6 WEEKS.

Negative 2002 Chevrolet Camaro car reviews

  1. Trent Beatty 2024-07-07

This car is definitely the bang for the buck performance king. I haven't encountered any real problems so far, and the T-tops make driving this car even more enjoyable.

  2. Larry Heller 2024-06-17

Hi there! I bought this car with the hope of competing with my uncle's 00' Mustang Cobra, but it turned out to be a bit of a challenge. Even after spending thousands of dollars, I can only keep up with his stock Cobra. I was a bit disappointed, to be honest. I thought it would be easy to modify since it has the same engine as the Vettes, but I'm still working on beating that darn Ford.

  3. Jocelyn Dibbert 2024-05-02

This car is really fun to drive, especially on the weekends. However, it's important to note that it may not be the best choice for driving in snowy or rainy conditions due to poor traction. Additionally, the brake rotors may warp easily and the front window may distort the view in certain areas. Despite these issues, it's a great car to have for weekend drives and it has a tight feel. It's also worth noting that the black plastic interior pieces may fall off. Overall, it's a great car to have for fun weekend drives, but it may not be the most practical choice for everyday use.

I've had my 02 Z28 for 6 years now, and it's been a great ride! With 92k miles on it, the LS1 engine has proven to be very reliable and can withstand a lot of abuse. These cars are capable of reaching 400+ horsepower with just bolt-ons, but with the addition of a cam, heads, and a proper tune, you can easily achieve 450 to 490 rear-wheel horsepower all day long. That translates to 500-550 brake horsepower without the need for nitrous, turbo, or supercharger. It's worth noting that LS1's were underrated, so Corvette owners didn't have to worry. While it's true that LS1's make around 290-310 rear-wheel horsepower, which is the same as stock Vettes, it's important to remember that there's a significant difference of 150 horsepower and 150 torque between V6 and V8 engines. So, for those on this board who claim that the V6 makes V8 power, I would have to disagree. Please try out a V8 first and then tell me if your V6 is like a V8.

  2. Nils Schneider 2025-01-03

These cars are wonderful! They're a blast to drive, especially on good curvy roads. I highly recommend this car to any performance enthusiast out there who wants a sports car.

  3. Oren Beier 2025-01-01

When searching for a new job that required a 90-mile daily commute, I was looking for a car that was both enjoyable and stylish. After test driving several cars ranging from $21K to $35K, I found the perfect fit. This convertible boasts a 5.7 litre V8 engine with 310 HP, leather seats, and a 500 watt stereo system. The best part? It was only $30K with 0% financing for 60 months. In my opinion, there's no comparison to other cars like the A4, 325, X-type, or Mustang. The moment you hit the gas, you'll feel the power and excitement. Needless to say, I'm absolutely in love with this car!

  4. Brennon Krajcik 2024-11-27

What a fantastic performance from these 60's muscle cars, such as the 427 Camaros of old, but with double the fuel economy and three times the amount of handling and features. The LS1 V8 aluminum block is a push rod legend with a lot of performance availability. These cars can really lay down the low end power, and with a good exhaust and air intake, 400 hp is not too far off for under half the price of expensive imports or the Vette. It's a blast to drive on back roads and drag strip launches on highway on-ramps.

  5. Melvin Schumm 2024-11-06

A very fun car to drive! It will spin the hell out of the tires when you want it to, and when you don't, it will accelerate faster than you think it should. It's a good car. I've owned 4 Camaros, and I must say, GM has done it right with the last generation Camaro. I'll be sad to see it go.
