2000 Chevrolet Camaro problems
The Chevrolet Camaro is a mid-size American automobile manufactured by Chevrolet, classified as a pony car. It first went on sale on September 29, 1966, for the 1967 model year and was designed to compete with the Ford Mustang. The Camaro shared its platform and major components with the Firebird, produced by General Motors' Pontiac division that was also introduced for 1967.
Four distinct generations of the Camaro were developed before production ended in 2002. The nameplate was revived on a concept car that evolved into the fifth-generation Camaro; production started on March 16, 2009.
The Camaro was discontinued at the end of the 2024 model year. Production ended in December 2023. However, Chevrolet has stated, "This is not the end of Camaro's story."

I INSTALLED THE SPRING MY SELF IN 2006 AND TWO YEARS LATER 2008 THE SPRING BROKE AGAIN. I ONLY DRIVE THE CAR IN THE SUMMER MONTHS. (26,000 KILOMETERS). I DO NOT ABUSE THE CAR IN ANY WAY. I BELIEVE THIS IS A DESIGN DEFECT. I THINK THAT A CLUTCH PEDAL RETURN SPRING SHOULD LAST LONGER THAN TWO YEARS AT $70 A POP. *TR
FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE,EQUIPMENT PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2008-07-15
- VIN: 2G1FP22K7Y2
- Components: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE,EQUIPMENT
- Summary: PURCHASED A 2000 CHEVY. CAMARO WITH ONLY 50K MILES TWO MONTHS AGO. THREE WEEKS AGO I WAS FINDING THAT IT WOULD NOT START RIGHT AWAY WHEN HOT AND MY GAS GAUGE IS NOT WORKING. IF THE CAR WAS LEFT OVERNIGHT, IN THE MORNING IT WOULD START FINE. THE CAUSE IS A BAD FUEL PUMP, IT LOSES PRESSURE WHEN HOT BUT HERE IS THE REAL PROBLEM. THE PUMP AND SENDING UNIT IS IN THE GAS TANK AND I HAVE TO REPLACE IT WITH A GM UNIT, AFTER MARKET WOULD BE STUPID AND AS YOU READ ON YOU WILL UNDERSTAND WHY. THE FUEL PUMP IS $795.00, THE EXHAUST SYSTEM AND THE REAR AXLE/SUSPENSION NEEDS TO COME OFF TO TAKE THE TANK OUT. THIS IS 5 HOURS OF WORK ACCORDING TO MY MECHANIC. IT IS GOING TO COST OVER $1,100.00 TO CHANGE THIS PUMP. THERE IS NO SANE REASON WHY A FUEL PUMP SHOULD FAIL WITH ONLY 50K MILES ON THE CAR THE CAR HAS NEVER BEEN ABUSED, FACT IS THAT THE ORIGINAL OWNER ONLY DROVE IT ONCE A MONTH AND HE IS 58 YEARS OLD SO HE DOES NOT ABUSE A CAR. *TR
ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2008-07-28
- VIN: 2G1FP22K6Y2
- Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
- Summary: THE CATALYTIC CONVERTER HAS FAILED ON THE VEHICLE. THE CAR FAILED EMISSIONS TESTING. FOUND OUT THE WARRANTY WAS 8 YEARS/80,000 MILES, SO TOOK THE CAR TO THE DEALER TO DIAGNOSIS. VEHICLE HAS 21,000 MILES ON IT AND GM REFUSED TO PAY FOR THE REPAIR BECAUSE THEY SAID THE CONVERTER WAS "RUSTED". VEHICLE IS 8 YEARS OLD AND ONLY DRIVEN LESS THAN 3,000 MILES ANNUALLY AND STORED FOR 6 MONTHS OUT OF THE YEAR. THE PROBLEM WITH THE CONVERTER HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH RUST, THE BAFFLES ARE BREAKING UP INSIDE. GM REFUSES TO OFFER ANY ASSISTANCE. VERY COSTLY REPAIR, PART ALONE IS $750.00 AND THAT DOES INCLUDE ANY LABOR. *TR

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2007-10-16
- VIN: 2G1FP22K3Y2
- Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
- Summary: WHEN ATTEMPTING TO LEAVE A FRIENDS HOUSE MY 2000 CHEVY CAMARO (3.8 L V6) WOULD NOT STAY RUNNING. AFTER TAKING THE CAR TO THE LOCAL MECHANIC IT WAS DISCOVERED THAT THE ISC MOTOR HAD "BLOWN." DEALERS AND THE MANUFACTURER COULD NOT LOCATE AN ISC MOTOR RIGHT AWAY. IT TURNS OUT THAT THIS MOTOR IS ACTUALLY PART OF THE VEHICLES THROTTLE BODY. THE PART THAT MALFUNCTIONED CAN ONLY BE PURCHASED SEPARATELY FOR THE 5.8L V8, OR SO WE ARE TOLD, WHEREAS THE 3.8L ENGINE MUST PURCHASE THE ENTIRE COMPONENT. CURRENTLY, THE MECHANIC IS WORKING ON REPLACING THE THROTTLE BODY WITH A BRAND NEW, GM SUPPLIED PART, SINCE THERE ARE NO AFTERMARKET PARTS AVAILABLE FOR THE 3.8L. THE COST OF TOWING AND THE PART WILL TOTAL JUST SHORT OF $1100.00. *TR
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2007-09-20
- VIN: 1G1ND52JXY6
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: I HAVE A 2000 MALIBU AND IT HAS 129K MILES ON IT. THE ANTI-THEFT LIGHT HAS BEEN ON FOR MONTHS AND I DIDN'T KNOW WHAT THE REASON FOR THIS WAS, BUT IT NEVER SEEMED TO AFFECT MY CAR IN ANY WAY. TODAY THE CAR TURNED ON FINE TWICE, ONCE COMING OUT OF THE HOUSE AND THE SECOND TIME COMING OUT OF THE GAS STATION. WHEN I TRY TO TURN IT ON AFTER LEAVING FROM A JOB INTERVIEW, IT CRANKS AS IF IT WANTS TO TURN ON BUT DOESN'T. IT SOUNDS LIKE IF THE GAS TANK IS ON EMPTY BUT IT'S ALMOST FULL. I CHECKED ALL CONNECTIONS AND EVEN TRIED A JUMP START AND IT DIDN'T MAKE ANY DIFFERENCE. FINALLY I GOT IT TOWED HOME AND FIND OUT ON THE INTERNET THAT CHEVY MALIBUS ARE FULL OF DEFECTS.(HTTP://WWW.AUTOSITE.COM/CONTENT/RESEARCH/FORUMS/INDEX.CFM/ACTION/POSTS/FID/1601) (INCLUDING MY AC THAT ONLY WORKS ON 3, 4, AND 5). MY ANTI THEFT DEVICE WON'T LET ME DRIVE MY OWN CAR, AND I ALREADY MISSED AN IMPORTANT CLASS. I'VE BEEN TRYING TO LEAVE THE IGNITION SWITCH IN THE ON POSITION FOR A WHILE UNTIL THE ANTI THEFT LIGHT TURNS OFF, BUT IT NEVER TURNS OFF. IT HAS BARELY STARTED WITH THIS PROBLEM TODAY, BUT AFTER READING ALL OF THE COMPLAINTS, MORE LIKE HORROR STORIES, I'M SCARED OF MY MALIBU AND I DON'T TRUST IT ANYMORE BECAUSE I KNOW IT WILL GET WORSE. I DON'T HAVE THE MONEY TO PAY THE DEALER TO FIX AN OBVIOUS PROBLEM THAT THEY KNOW EXISTS BUT WON'T ADMIT TO; THERE NEEDS TO BE A SERIOUS RECALL. *TR
VISIBILITY PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2007-04-02
- Components: VISIBILITY
- Summary: 2000 TAHOE: REAR HATCH WINDOW HINGE BROKE. IT IS MADE OF PLASTIC...PRETTY SHODDY FOR A 4W DRIVE VEHICLE. I HAVE ONLY OPENED THAT WINDOW 5-6 TIMES SINCE 2002, SO IT DEFINITELY WAS NOT ABUSED. I HAVE BEEN TOLD THAT THIS IS A DESIGN FLAW...WOULD LIKE GM TO REIMBURSE ME FOR THE $600 WINDOW PLUS HINGES (THE CHEVY DEALER QUOTED $1300.) *JB
ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2003-09-03
- VIN: 2G1WF55E5Y9

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2007-02-19
- VIN: 2G1FP22G2Y2
- Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
- Summary: I HAD A SPECIAL POLICY SENT TO ME FOR THE CATALYTIC CONVERTER ON MY 2000 CHEVROLET CAMARO. I TOOK THE CAR IN TO LET THEM TEST TO SEE IF THAT WAS WHY MY SERVICE ENGINE LIGHT WAS ON AND IT WAS. THEY ORDERED THE PART AND I TOOK IT IN FOR REPAIR. PARTS AND LABOR WERE TO BE COVERED. THE DEALERSHIP CALLS ME TO INFORM ME THAT MY BOLTS WERE SEVERLY RUSTED AND I WOULD BE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE BOLTS IF THEY BROKE. THEY HAD TO REMOVE THE BOLTS REGARDLESS IF THEY WERE RUSTED OR NOT AND I HAD TO PAY FOR THE LABOR THAT WAS SUPPOSE TO BE COVERED. THE BOLTS COST ME A TOTAL OF 4.92 AND THE LABOR WAS 164.00, THAT IS SOOOO FUNNY THAT I HAD TO PAY FOR LABOR THAT HAD TO BE DONE IN THE FIRST PLACE TO REPLACE THE PART. I WAS TOLD THE THE RUST WAS DUE TO MY FAULT. HOW IS IT POSSIBLE THAT I KEEP THE BOTTOM SIDE OF MY CAR FROM RUSTING CONSIDERING IT IS 7 YEARS OLD. I MEAN THE BOLTS ARE ON THE EXHAUST WHICH GETS HOT AND COLD AND MAKES ITS OWN CONDENSATION AND MAKES ITS OWN RUST. SO IF THERE IS GONNA BE A SPECIAL POLICY FOR A DEFECT ON A CHEVROLET PART, WHICH IS THERE FAULT, YOU NEED TO MAKE SOME BETTER GUIDELINES ON WHAT IS COVERED. I HAD TO PAY FOR LABOR THAT HAD TO BE PERFORMED REGARDLESS IF MY BOLTS BROKE OR NOT. I CAN UNDERSTAND PAYING FOR THE BROKEN BOLTS, BUT FOR LABOR THAT HAD TO BE PERFORMED ANYWAY? AND GENERAL MOTORS WAS NO HELP AT ALL TO ME. SO MY QUESTION IS WHY SEND OUT A LETTER TO FIX A PROBLEM ON A CAR SO OLD IF THE LABOR IS NOT GONNA BE COVERED. AND WATCH OUT BECAUSE THE DEALERSHIPS LIE, JUST TO GET A BUCK. THEY TOLD GENERAL MOTORS THAT THEY HAD TO DRILL THE BOLTS TO GET THEM OUT. WELL THAT IS SO FUNNY BECAUSE THEY SAVED THE BOLTS TO SHOW ME AND I HAVE THEM IN MY POSSESSION AND GUESS WHAT, THEY AREN'T DRILLED. HOW FUNNY. SO WHEN YOU SEND OUT THESE "SPECIAL POLICIES" PLEASE MAKE SURE THAT THE LABOR IS COVERED SO NOONE ELSE HAS TO ENDURE THE CRAP THAT I HAVE WITH CHEVROLET. *NM

THERE WAS NO WARNING PRIOR TO THE COMPLETE FAILURE OF THE BACK PLATE. THE BACK PLATE HAS NOT BEEN REPLACED AT THIS TIME. EARLIER THERE WAS A FAILURE OF THE ENTIRE VEHICLE BRAKING SYSTEM. ALL FOUR BRAKE ROTORS RUSTED, RESULTING IN TOTAL BRAKE FAILURE. THE WHEEL CYLINDER SEPARATED FROM THE CALIPERS. THE ONLY WARNING LIGHT CAME AFTER THE COMPLETE FAILURE OF THE LEFT ROTOR. THE ROTORS WERE REPLACED AND THE CALIPERS WERE REBUILT. THE BRAKE PADS HAD LESS THAN 50 % WEAR BUT THEY WERE REPLACED AS WELL. *AK
TIRES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2005-08-04
- Components: TIRES
- Summary: WE HAD PURCHASED UNIROYAL TIRES IN OCTOBER 2002 FROM FARM AND FLEET IN LA CROSSE. AS OF AUGUST 4, 2005, ALL THE TIRES NEEDED TO BE REPLACED DUE TO THE TIRES CRACKING AND PEELING. WE TOOK THE CAR TO SEARS WHERE THEY TOLD US THEY WOULD NOT LET US DRIVE THE CAR DUE THE SEVERITY OF THE PEELING OF THE TIRES. DRIVING OUR CAR WITH THE TIRES IN THE POOR CONDITION COULD CAUSE AND ACCIDENT AND INJURY. I STARTED HAVING A PANIC ATTACK AFTER HEARING THIS NEWS. WE WERE TOLD THAT THIS IS NOT NORMAL FOR TIRES TO SHRED, CRACK, AND PEEL AT ONLY 40,000 MILES. I CALLED FARM AND FLEET WHERE WE BOUGHT THE TIRES AND HE TOLD ME "TOO BAD" AND HUNG UP ON ME. I CALLED UNIROYAL AND SHE SAID IT IS NOT THEIR PROBLEM IF OUR TIRES CRACKED, THAT'S WHAT TIRES DO. THESE TIRES THAT CRACKED, PEELED, AND SHREDDED HAVE A 75,000 MILES WARRANTY, NOONE WILL HONOR THIS WARRANTY AND WE HAD TO SPEND OVER $400 BUYING NEW TIRES. *NM

- Fire: 1
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC
- Summary: I OWN A 2000 CHEVROLET ASTRO VAN WHICH I HAVE NOT BEEN ABLE TO DRIVE FOR OVER A YEAR BECAUSE OF MALFUNCTIONING ANTILOCK BRAKES. I BROUGHT IT TO BE REPAIRED LAST YEAR AND PAID OVER $800 FOR ONE SET OF BRAKES, THE OTHER SET STILL NEEDS TO BE FIXED. THE ANTILOCK BRAKES PREVENT THE VEHICLE FROM STOPPING WHEN TRAVELING AT SLOW SPEEDS. THIS IS A DEFINITE SAFETY PROBLEM. THERE HAS BEEN A SERVICE BULLETIN FOR THIS PROBLEM ON THIS VEHICLE SINCE 2002. THERE IS CURRENTLY AN INVESTIGATION OF THIS VERY PROBLEM ON SIMILAR CHEVY SUVS AND TRUCKS, BUT NOT INCLUDING THE ASTRO VAN.
ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2005-05-09
- Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
- Summary: I PURCHASED MY 2000 CHEVY MALIBU WITH 8,000 MILES AND STILL UNDER WARRANTY. I WAS VERY HAPPY WITH IT UNTIL RECENTLY. EVEN THOUGH I FAITHFULLY CHANGE THE OIL EVERY 3,000 MILES I AM NOW EXPERIENCING MAJOR PROBLEMS WITH 65,000 MILES ON THE VEHICLE WHICH I AM STILL PAYING OFF. I WAS TOLD BY MY MECHANIC THAT GMC HAD AN ISSUE WITH THE ENGINE THAT IS IN MY VEHICLE. IT NOW HAS AN INTAKE VALUE FAILURE AND PISTON PROBLEMS. I HAVE OWNED MANY OTHER VECHILES AND AS LONG AS I MAINTAINED THEM THEY RAN GREAT UNTIL 100,000 PLUS MILES. WHAT IS THE PROBLEM AND WHY IS THERE NOT A RECALL ON THIS ENGINE? NOT IMPRESSED. I THOUGHT GOING GMC WOULD GIVE ME A RELIABLE VEHICLE. I NOW HAVE TO PUT IN OVER $1,000 OR REPLACE THE ENGINE FOR $3,000 TO $4,000. WHEN I GO TO PURCHASE ANOTHER VEHILE I WILL KEEP THIS IN MIND!!!!!

I ordered this car new, and it is my fourth Camaro. Its performance is great, and the fuel economy is surprising. The handling is outstanding. However, I have had some issues with the differential. It has been completely rebuilt by dealers three times and still rattles horribly under neutral load and whines when under slight power on turns. Although Chevrolet has admitted that the rear end clunking is common, they have not been very helpful in resolving the issue. Now that the warranty is up, I am left to deal with this on my own.

This is a really nice car! The convertible top works great (although it can leak in automatic car washes). It has plenty of power and handles quite well. The stock Goodyear tires provide adequate mileage. The large doors can be a bit of a pain in tight parking spots, and the six-speed can be a bit of a challenge in stop-and-go traffic. While the leather seats could be better bolstered, it still gets a lot of positive comments from passers-by.

I started leasing Baby and loved her so much that after 3 years, I decided to buy her. She's a real beauty with her unique exterior design that sets her apart from the Accords, Civics, Camrys and Corollas. Her tight steering makes her quick to react, and when she comes barreling down the road, everyone knows her name. Although her power may be deceiving, she's still a joy to look at. The T-tops are fun, but can be a bit cumbersome to manage and can get quite hot to the touch when she's been in the sun.

This car is incredibly well-balanced. It's like a muscle car, but with the added bonus of being able to corner with ease. I have never had more fun driving a car, not even my old 70 Nova! It's very easy to handle when driving around town, with smooth gear changes and outstanding throttle response. Whether you're cruising down the strip or taking a drive down a country road, this car is incredibly responsive. It's easy to drive and has plenty of power on tap. Plus, with 60 MPH at only 1450 RPMs in 6th gear, I get great gas mileage (around 23-24mpg on the highway).

This car is great! Even on bumpy roads, it remains quiet and the steering is always accurate. The power steering is firmer than expected, but it provides a sense of control. The car is stable at high speeds and I was able to cruise at 135mph with ease. It's quick and powerful, and I believe it could even reach 155mph without any issues. The only downside is the seating, but I was able to improve it by replacing the driver's seat with one from a 96 Chevy Caprice cop car. Now it's much better!

I have owned my car for a couple of years now, and unfortunately, I have not been very impressed with it. Over time, I have experienced some reliability issues, which have made it difficult to enjoy my driving experience. At 60K, I have had some trouble with every accessory on the car, including the window washer projector. While the engine is mechanically sound, the brakes could use some improvement. I have had to rewire the entire interior due to an issue caused by a previous mechanic, which has been frustrating. Additionally, my mileage has decreased significantly from its original 24 mpg, and I have been unable to fix it. Despite these challenges, I have learned a lot from this experience and will consider other options in the future.

I will never purchase another GM car. Unfortunately, just after the warranty expired, at 36,000 miles, the manual transmission's 5th gear synch malfunctioned, requiring a $1200 repair. While I have not yet experienced any issues with the rear axle at 60,000 miles, I have heard that it is prone to failure. As a result, I am attempting to sell the vehicle, despite the fact that the body is beginning to detach.
