1999 Chevrolet Camaro problems

chevrolet logo

The Chevrolet Camaro is a mid-size American automobile manufactured by Chevrolet, classified as a pony car. It first went on sale on September 29, 1966, for the 1967 model year and was designed to compete with the Ford Mustang. The Camaro shared its platform and major components with the Firebird, produced by General Motors' Pontiac division that was also introduced for 1967.

Four distinct generations of the Camaro were developed before production ended in 2002. The nameplate was revived on a concept car that evolved into the fifth-generation Camaro; production started on March 16, 2009.

The Camaro was discontinued at the end of the 2024 model year. Production ended in December 2023. However, Chevrolet has stated, "This is not the end of Camaro's story."

Common 1999 Chevrolet Camaro problems

Based on the complaints from owners of the Chevrolet Camaro 1999, here are some common problems:

  • Passlock Security System: The Passlock security system in the 1999 Camaro could cause issues where the engine turns over but won't start. This security feature could sometimes malfunction, leading to starting problems for the vehicle.
  • Engine Noise and Performance: Some owners reported engine noise during warm-up, which is considered normal to some extent. Additionally, there were complaints about engine knocking, stalling, loud noises during startup, loss of power, and vibrations similar to gear slippage. In severe cases, the engine could lock up and shut down the entire vehicle.
  • Electrical System: Owners experienced problems with the electrical system, including issues with air conditioning, car alarms, climate control, parking lights, radio, stereo, and turn signal lights. These components could malfunction, operate randomly, or stop working altogether. Replacing and programming the body control module that manages these parts could help resolve these electrical issues.
  • Window Regulator Rivets: Camaros from 1999 had complaints related to window regulator rivets failing, causing the windows to lean towards the cabin. This issue led to a metal-on-glass rattle when rolling down the windows, followed by a popping sound when rolling them up or down. The failure of these parts prevented the windows from staying upright, leading to pressure on the door pads.

These common problems reported by owners of the Chevrolet Camaro 1999 highlight various issues ranging from fuel system failures to electrical and mechanical concerns. Addressing these problems promptly can help maintain the performance and reliability of the vehicle.

THEY DO NOT HAVE RECORD OF MY CALL OR FILE NUMBER ANY MORE. CHEVY TOLD ME BECAUSE I LIVE IN COLORADO INSTEAD OF ONE OF THE STATES THAT THE RECALL IS FOR, THAT IT DOES NOT APPLY TO MY VEHICLE. I FEEL VERY STRONGLY THAT MY VEHICLE SHOULD BE INCLUDED IN THIS RECALL DUE TO THE FACT THAT I HAD CALLED YEARS AGO TO COMPLAIN ABOUT THE BRAKING SYSTEM AND DESCRIBED TO THEM WHAT THEY ARE NOW RECALLING OTHER VEHICLES FOR, ONLY IN DIFFERENT STATES. *JB

  • Summary: I HAVE A 1999 CHEVROLET MALIBU LS. THIS IS THE WORST CAR I HAVE EVER OWNED. SINCE I BOUGHT THE CAR WITH 60,000+ MILES ON IT AND IT WON'T BE PAID OFF UNTIL 2007 I HAVE HAD TO REPLACE A MANIFOLD GASKET, BATTERY, WATER PUMP, I HAVE HAD TO PUT A USED TRANSMISSION IN. THE AIR CONDITIONER COMES ON OFF WHENEVER, WHEN YOU PUT GAS IN THE CAR YOU HAVE TO GIVE IT GAS BEFORE IT WILL STAY RUNNING. I HAVE HAD BEARINGS REPLACED IN BOTH FRONT WHEELS, TIRES KEEP GOING BAD AS DO THE THE BRAKES. OTHER PEOPLE HAVE HAD THE VERY SAME COMPLAINTS ABOUT THESE CARS AND NOT ONE RECALL HAS BEEN MADE. I WILL NEVER NEVER BUY A CHEVROLET AGAIN LET ALONE A MALIBU. MY NEXT CAR WILL BE A HONDA. I AM STILL TAKING THE CAR BACK FOR THE TRANSMISSION PROBLEM THIS WILL BE THE 4TH TIME IN LESS THAN A WEEK. NOT ONLY IS IT STILL LEAKING TRANSMISSION FLUID BUT NOW I CONVEINTLY HAVE A COOLANT LEAK THAT I DID NOT HAVE UNTIL THE 3RD TIME OF TAKING IT BACK TO THE CHEVY GARAGE TO HAVE THE TRANSMISSION FLUID LEAK FIXED. Negative 1999 Chevrolet Camaro car reviews

  1. Kristopher Wiegand 2024-11-26

This is my first car and I absolutely love it! Despite being a V6, it has great get up and go, and it's really comfortable too. I've only had it for two weeks, but the previous owner had it since '99 and the AC still works great. The only downside is that it creaks a bit when I turn the wheel all the way in one direction, but that's not a big deal. Although some of the plastic on the inside is a bit cheap and was already broken when I got it, overall it's in great condition for a 9 year old car with 113,000 miles. I'm so happy with it!

  2. Lisandro Collier 2024-09-28

I purchased my Camaro back in 2008 with 97,000 miles on the clock. Since then, I have driven it for 2 years and put an additional 117,000 miles on it. During this time, I have had to replace the rear end and clutch, refill the A/C, fix the transmission which lost 5th gear due to a c-clip falling off, and repair a blown head gasket and a noisy lifter. Despite these issues, I have invested a total of $12,000 in my car. Although it has broken down every summer, which is the only time of year I love to drive it, I still find myself reluctant to sell it. This is because I love the T-tops, the great handling, the comfortable ride, and the fact that it has a lot of get-up-and-go. I always tell myself that I will sell it after fixing it, but then I take it for a spin and I just can't bring myself to part with it. It's just too much fun to drive!

Positive 1999 Chevrolet Camaro car reviews

  1. Hubert Pagac 2024-10-21

I have always loved Camaros, and my car has only reinforced this attitude. My friends and family know that my car is a part of Chevrolet's rich American history. I paid $24K in Sept. of 1998, and I have absolutely no complaints. It has been five summers of pure fun! GM did an excellent job with these cars. I plan to keep my car so that my kids will someday know what a 'musclecar' really is. Oh, and it eats V-8 Mustang Cobras for lunch! :-)

  2. Erick Stracke 2024-10-19

This car is fast, fun to drive, and has great trip mileage at 28 mpg. Although there is some tire noise inside the cab, the overall quality is good. Despite a few minor issues such as two broken sun visors, a faulty original battery installation, a failed window motor, a failed clutch master cylinder, and two trips to the shop for A/C problems, this car is still a reliable choice for drivers who value performance and efficiency.

  3. Efren Cronin 2024-10-12

Hey there! You've got a fast car, and I'm here to help you make it even faster! It's actually pretty easy, so let's get started.

  4. Brycen Bailey 2024-07-28

I've owned Camaros before and absolutely loved them. In fact, I once bought a 2002 SS brand new, thinking it was the last year for Camaros. Unfortunately, I later found out that wasn't the case and ended up selling it. Interestingly enough, during the time I owned the SS, my daughter had a 2000 V6 Camaro that I actually enjoyed driving more. When she eventually traded it in for an Equinox, I regretted not buying it from her before she did. Fast forward 5 years and I finally found another V6 Camaro online with only 5,000 miles on it. I purchased it without hesitation due to my previous positive experiences with Camaros. This one will always be a summer weekend driver for me.

  5. Americo Zulauf 2024-07-17

A really nice car! The best car I have ever owned.
