1998 Chevrolet Camaro problems

chevrolet logo

The Chevrolet Camaro is a mid-size American automobile manufactured by Chevrolet, classified as a pony car. It first went on sale on September 29, 1966, for the 1967 model year and was designed to compete with the Ford Mustang. The Camaro shared its platform and major components with the Firebird, produced by General Motors' Pontiac division that was also introduced for 1967.

Four distinct generations of the Camaro were developed before production ended in 2002. The nameplate was revived on a concept car that evolved into the fifth-generation Camaro; production started on March 16, 2009.

The Camaro was discontinued at the end of the 2024 model year. Production ended in December 2023. However, Chevrolet has stated, "This is not the end of Camaro's story."

One of the most frequently reported problems is a loud knocking or tapping sound coming from the engine, especially when the engine is cold. This issue is often attributed to the LS1 engine, which is known to have a slight knock on cold start-up. However, a more pronounced knock could indicate a serious problem that requires immediate attention.

Another common issue with the 1998 Camaro is hazy or clouded headlamps. This problem can be caused by a variety of factors, including exposure to the elements, age, and wear and tear. It can be addressed by replacing the headlamps or cleaning them thoroughly.

Finally, the 1998 Camaro's engine and engine cooling system may have problems. For example, the cooling system may fail, causing the engine to overheat. This issue can be caused by a variety of factors, including a faulty thermostat, a damaged radiator, or a leak in the cooling system.

In summary, the 1998 Chevrolet Camaro has several common problems, including engine noise, hazy headlamps, interior issues, electrical system malfunctions, and engine and engine cooling system problems. While these issues can be frustrating, they are generally not difficult to address with proper maintenance and repair.

I WAS STOPPED AT THE ENTRY OF A PARKING, THE ENGINE RACED AND THE CAR PLOUGHED AHEAD, ALTHOUGH I CONTINUOUSLY APPLIED PRESSURE ON THE BRAKE PEDAL. THE C5 ACCELERATED AT A TERRIFIC SPEED AND STOPPED ONLY AFTER I APPLIED THE PARKING BRAKE AND CUT THE IGNITION. THE CAR WAS REPAIRED. THE HEAD MECHANIC, ASSURED ME MY CAR WAS IN ORDER WHEN I TOOK IT BACK. I REQUESTED THE GARAGE CONSULT A GM EXPERT ON THAT SORT OF ACCIDENT. HE DID NOT COMPLY WITH THAT REQUEST.THE DYSFUNCTION OCURRED AGAIN. SECOND ACCIDENT : MAY 7TH, 03. I PARKED. I HAD, AT THE END OF THIS MANEUVER, THE RIGHT FOOT ON THE BRAKE, (TO SLOW THE CAR WHICH AT THIS TIME CRAWLED), WHEN THE ENGINE ACCELERATED. THE C5 STOPPED AFTER I JAMMED ON THE BRAKE AND CUT THE IGNITION REMARKS AND CONCLUSION. THE C5 SUDDENLY TOOK OFF ON IT'S OWN, THE THROTTLE IN A FULL OPEN POSITION, WITHOUT THE DRIVER STEPPING ON THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL. THE BRAKES WERE NOT EFFECTIVE SOON ENOUGH TO AVOID THE ACCIDENTS. ONLY SWITCHING OFF THE IGNITION WAS EFFECTIVE TO STOP THE VEHICLE. I HAD MY RIGHT FOOT ON THE BRAKE PEDAL AND THE GEAR LEVER WAS IN DRIVE. AS ANY ENGINEER KNOWS, GIVEN THAT ELECTRONIC LOGIC IS SENSITIVE TO INTERFERENCES AND THE C5 COMPARTMENT IS FLOODED WITH VIOLENTS SIGNALS; IT WAS IMPERATIVE, AFTER THE FIRST SERIOUS INCIDENT, TO INSTALL A BLACK BOX OR TIMESTAMPING RECORDING DEVICE, FILMING AND RECORDING THE ACTUAL FOOT POSITION OF THE DRIVER, THE THROTTLE AND BRAKE POSITIONS, ENGINE RPM AND VEHICLE SPEED IN ORDER TO ANALYZE A POSSIBLE RE-OCCURENCE OF THE EVENT. BEING A SURGEON, CONSIDERING THE GRAVITY OF THIS DOUBLE AND IDENTICAL ACCIDENT, NOT ONLY TO RENONCE USING THIS C5, BUT ALSO TO ASK THAT ALL THE C5 BE SUBJECT TO A FACTORY RECALL TO CONTROL ALL THEIR ELECTRONIC, TO CORRECT THE DEFECTS AND ORIGIN OF SUCH DYSFUNCTIONS AND PREVENT SUCH ACCIDENTS.*AK

Negative 1998 Chevrolet Camaro car reviews

  1. Brennon Braun 2024-10-01

The vehicle is very enjoyable, especially when you have the T-top model like myself. If they go back to making the Camaro, I hope Chevy works more on the interior and tries to get an engine that runs on regular gas sold off the lot.

  2. Scotty Hegmann 2024-09-04

The performance of this car is fantastic! With just a few minor modifications, you can achieve mid 12's with a stock engine and still get an impressive 25 mpg on the highway. What's more, the reliability of this car has been outstanding, with absolutely no repairs required. Even after adding a cam/head/headers, my manual transmission car turned into a real beast, achieving a best of 12.2 on street tires at the 1/4 mile. Additionally, this car offers phenomenal handling, capable of up to 1G with tires and upgraded suspension components from the factory.

  3. Richie Block 2024-01-29

You may want to consider other options as this car has had some issues in the past. It has 133,000 miles on it and I have owned it since it had 55,000 miles. I have had to replace a few parts such as the fuel pump, power steering pump, catalytic converters, oxygen sensors, and clutch. Unfortunately, it is currently at the mechanic shop due to an unexpected issue while driving on the freeway. The mechanics are still trying to determine the problem and the bill has already reached $1200. While the acceleration may be decent, it may not be the most reliable option in the long run.

Positive 1998 Chevrolet Camaro car reviews

  1. Philip Macejkovic 2025-01-08

I bought this car used after experiencing my buddy's SS. It's absolutely amazing! The exhilaration that this car brings is like nothing I have ever experienced before. It has great straight-ahead speed and if you lay off the gas through turns, it corners better than any sports car on the road. With proper care, this car will run for years. As for gas mileage, you wouldn't even know that you had a V8 engine (low range from small tank). It has plenty of power to get in and out of sticky situations. If you have the opportunity to get this vehicle, get it quickly. Don't worry about the resale value, you won't want to sell this car. I still get compliments on it on a weekly basis from all types of people...

  2. Ned Hudson 2024-11-20

Overall, the car is really fun to drive. The pick-up and acceleration are awesome for a 6-cylinder car. As long as you're sitting in the front, the car is quite comfortable. The only real issue is that the blind spots are quite large, but I guess that's just par for the course with sports cars. I'm extremely happy with it!

  3. Philip Dickens 2024-11-08

Good...I love this car. Before this, I drove a Tempo and a Buick! What was I thinking?! LOL What a change of car!

  4. Curt Hackett 2024-10-29

Awesome car! It beats the Mustang (even the GT) every time!

  5. Friedrich White 2024-10-12

I love my '98' Chevy Camaro! It's so fun to drive, even though the handling can be a little harsh. I really appreciate the fact that it can outpace just about any Mustang on the road!!! The respect I get from the little six and four cylinders is truly unbelievable! It's a real shame that Camaros are no longer being produced. Oh well, at least I have mine!!!
