Cadillac Eldorado 1996 problems
The Cadillac Eldorado is a luxury car manufactured and marketed by Cadillac from 1952 until 2002 over twelve generations.
The Eldorado was at or near the top of the Cadillac line. The original 1953 Eldorado convertible and the Eldorado Brougham models of 1957–1960 had distinct bodyshells and were the most expensive models that Cadillac offered those years. The Eldorado was never less than second in price after the Cadillac Series 75 limousine until 1966. Starting in 1967 the Eldorado retained its premium position in the Cadillac price structure, but was manufactured in high volumes on a unique, two-door personal luxury car platform.
The Eldorado carried the Fleetwood designation from 1965 through 1972, and was a modern revival of the pre-war Cadillac V-12 and Cadillac V-16 roadsters and convertibles.

Common Cadillac Eldorado 1996 problems
Common Problems with the Cadillac Eldorado 1996
- Car Won't Start Due to Theft System
The Cadillac Eldorado 1996 is equipped with an anti-theft system that can prevent the car from starting if it detects a problem. One common issue is a dead key fob battery, which can cause the system to activate and prevent the car from starting. To bypass or disable the unit, you may need to consult a dealer's manual or seek advice from Cadillac discussion boards. There can be up to 50 problems that can cause this symptom, so it's essential to diagnose the issue accurately.
- Engine Problems
The Cadillac Eldorado 1996 is known to have engine problems, particularly with the head gaskets. The engine uses flat tappet lifters, and if the cams look decent, you may be able to get away with just installing new lifters. However, it's recommended to replace all four cams if they show signs of wear. When you have the engine out, it's also a good idea to stud the halfcase section, even if it's not leaking, to avoid having to do the work twice. To bulletproof the motor, suggested head gaskets include the Fel-Pro PermaTorque MLS head gaskets. These engines are generally tough once the head bolt problem is fixed, but it's essential to ensure that the head gaskets are in good condition to avoid future issues.
- Transmission Problems
The 4T80e transmission in the Cadillac Eldorado 1996 has been known to have issues, particularly with leaking head gaskets. If the car has been driven for an extended period with leaking head gaskets, the transmission may have been damaged. It's essential to check the transmission fluid level and condition to ensure that it's in good working order. If the transmission is not working correctly, it may need to be rebuilt or replaced, which can be a costly repair.
- Service Ride Light
The Service Ride Light in the Cadillac Eldorado 1996 indicates that the active shocks are not functioning correctly. If the Service Ride Light is on, it's essential to replace the active shocks as soon as possible to retain the "touring coupe" feel of the car. However, GM probably hasn't had the active shocks in stock for a decade, and even if they did, they'd be expensive. It's recommended to replace them with high-quality aftermarket shocks that can provide similar performance and durability.
- Stalling Out
The Cadillac Eldorado 1996 is known to have issues with stalling out, particularly when the car is warmed up. The car may intermittently die at a stop sign or light, which can be dangerous and inconvenient. The cause of this issue is not explicitly known, but it's essential to diagnose the problem accurately to ensure that the car is safe to drive. It's recommended to consult a mechanic or Cadillac discussion boards to diagnose and fix the issue.
In conclusion, the Cadillac Eldorado 1996 is known to have several common problems, including engine and transmission issues, stalling out, and service ride light. It's essential to diagnose and fix these issues accurately to ensure that the car is safe and reliable. Consulting a mechanic or Cadillac discussion boards can be helpful in diagnosing and fixing these issues.

I BELIEVE THAT THE INSTALLER OF THE TIRE AT SEARS WAS AWARE OF THE BUBBLE. I WOULD NOT HAVE NOTICE THE BUBBLE UPON INSPECTION OF THE VEHICLE AT SEARS BECAUSE IT IS DARK IN THEIR SERVICE AREA. THE BUBBLE IS HARD TO SEE EVEN IN SUNLIGHT. A FEW DAYS (NOVEMBER 26 2006) LATER I NOTICED A BUBBLE IN THE SIDEWALL OF MY RIGHT FRONT TIRE. IT LOOKED LIKE A SEPARATION OF THE BELT WITHIN THE TIRE. I SHOWED MY FRIEND. HE AGREED AND TOLD ME TO TAKE IT BACK TO SEARS. I TOOK THE CAR BACK TO SEARS ON DECEMBER 6 2006. THE AUTO CENTER SERVICE MANAGER SAID THAT THE BUBBLE WAS CAUSED BY A POT HOLE. I TOLD HIM THAT I HAD NOT HIT ANYTHING. HE WAS ADAMANT ABOUT HIS POSITION. HE GAVE ME A NUMBER FOR CUSTOMER SERVICE. CUSTOMER SERVICE CALLED THAT SAME MANAGER AND WHEN CUSTOMER SERVICE CALLED ME THEY HAD AGREED WITH THE MANAGER AND SAID THEY CANNOT HELP ME. I CALLED THE MANUFACTURER OF THE TIRE AND LEFT A MESSAGE, A REPRESENTATIVE FROM THE MANUFACTURER CONTACTED ME, I EXPLAINED THE SITUATION TO THE REPRESENTATIVE. HE CALLED THE AUTO SERVICE MANAGER AND HE (REPRESENTATIVE FROM THE TIRE MANUFACTURER) ALSO AGREED WITH THE MANAGER. THE REPRESENTATIVE SAID, " THE TIRE IS NOT UNDER A WARRANTY AND MY PROBLEM IS BETWEEN YOU AND SEARS". I RESEARCHED THE INTERNET FOR COMPLAINTS OR PROBLEMS WITH THIS TYPE OF TIRES. I READ OVER 484 REVIEWS ON THIS TIRES AND I FOUND SEVERAL SIMILAR OR THE SAME COMPLAINTS ABOUT THE SAME TIRE. I WOULD LIKE FOR A TIRE EXPERT TO LOOK AT MY TIRE. THERE IS SOMETHING WRONG WITH THESE TIRES AND THE MANUFACTURER IS REFUSING TO ADMIT THAT THERE IS A PROBLEM WITH THESE TIRES. *JB

Cadillac Eldorado 1996 recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 2 recalls for different components of the Cadillac Eldorado 1996.
- Manufacturer: GENERAL MOTORS CORP.
- Components: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:DELIVERY:HOSES, LINES/PIPING, AND FITTINGS
- Summary: SOME PASSENGER VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH 4.0L V8 ENGINES HAVE A CONDITION IN WHICH THE NYLON TUBING USED IN THE FUEL RAIL CONSTRUCTION MAY DEGRADE AND CRACK. ADDITIONALLY, THE 1995 MODEL YEAR USES A UNIQUE UNDERHOOD FUEL RETURN LINE THAT MAY CRACK. CRACKING OF THE FUEL RAIL OR RETURN LINE TUBING CAN RESULT IN A FUEL LEAK INTO THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT.
- Consequence: FUEL LEAKAGE, IN THE PRESENCE OF AN IGNITION SOURCE, COULD RESULT IN A FIRE.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSPECT AND, IF NECESSARY, REPLACE THE ENGINE FUEL RAIL WITH A NEW STAINLESS STEEL FUEL RAIL. DEALERS WILL ALSO INSTALL A REVISED CHASSIS FUEL RETURN LINE. THE RECALL BEGAN ON JUNE 2, 2004, FOR 1996-1997 OLDSMOBILE AURORA VEHICLES. OWNERS OF 1995 CADILLACS AND 1996-1997 OLDSMOBILE AURORA WERE SENT LETTERS ON AUGUST 6, 2004. ADDITIONAL LETTERS TO OWNERS WILL BE FORTHCOMING. OWNERS SHOULD CONTACT OLDSMOBILE AT 1-800-630-6537.
- Manufacturer: GENERAL MOTORS CORP.
- Components: EQUIPMENT:ELECTRICAL
- Summary: THE ANALOG INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER ON THESE VEHICLES COULD HAVE AN INTERNAL SHORT CIRCUIT DISRUPTING THE PASS KEY SYSTEM, CAUSING FAILURE OF THE INSTRUMENT PANEL GAUGES AND TELL-TALES, AND A POSSIBLE NO-START CONDITION. THIS DOES NOT CONFORM TO THE REQUIREMENTS OF FMVSS NO. 101, "CONTROLS AND DISPLAYS;" NO. 108, "LAMPS, REFLECTIVE DEVICES, AND ASSOCIATED EQUIPMENT;" AND NO. 208, "OCCUPANT CRASH PROTECTION."
- Consequence: CONSEQUENCE OF NON-COMPLIANCE: IF THE SHORT CIRCUIT OCCURS WHILE DRIVING, THE INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER WILL GO BLANK, CAUSING LOSS OF GAUGE FUNCTION AND ALL TEEL-TALE INDICATORS EXCEPT FOR ABS, SIR, PARK BRAKE AND SERVICE ENGINE SOON. THE LOSS OF ALL TELL-TALES FOR SEAT BELTS, TURN SIGNALS, HIGH BEAM, HAZARD, OIL PRESSURE, COOLANT TEMPERATURE, AND OTHERS RESULT IN NONCOMPLIANCE WITH THESE SAFETY STANDARDS.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSPECT AND, IF NECESSARY, REPLACE THE INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER.

Overall, I'm really glad to hear that you're satisfied with your ETC!
-
Just turned over 97K, and have done minimal repairs. Maintenance will keep this engine running for 300K!
-
I really appreciate the elegant styling of this car, especially with the Vogue chrome wheels, white diamond paint, and rear spoiler. I was originally searching for a clean '98 Mark 8, but unfortunately couldn't find one. However, I decided to purchase the Eldo based on its looks alone. I must admit that while it has great style, it lacks substance. I'm not sure why the auto industry raves about the Northstar engine, as the Ford V-8 feels much stronger and doesn't require a quart of oil every 1500 miles. This is my first V-8 front wheel drive car, and it will be my last due to the torque steer, nose dive, and loose, bouncy ride (feels like an offensive lineman's sitting under the hood). Additionally, the interior is quite noisy for a luxury car. However, like a trophy wife, she sure is pretty and kind of hard to give up!
-
Bought it used and I've enjoyed every mile. It's a strong and comfortable car, very solid.
-
This car is extremely fun to drive, although the 300hp ETC tends to 'nosetail' at full push. If you get it with the Bose system, the ride only gets better. It may lumber in evasive maneuvers, but the sheer 'push you back in your seat' feeling is impressive. While this car may depreciate badly, it's still a great buy in any used condition. As for reliability, it's too much fun to even think about the fact that this car has 3 fuseboxes.

You made a great decision by purchasing this vehicle with a warranty of 100,000 miles! We recently discovered an engineering defect that causes the aluminum blocks and heads to leak at the gasket area, which unfortunately is inherent with the design. However, we were able to have both of the heads repaired and new inserts for the head bolts installed in the block, all covered by the warranty. Without the warranty, this would have cost $2400. It's always better to be safe than sorry!
