Cadillac Eldorado problems
The Cadillac Eldorado is a luxury car manufactured and marketed by Cadillac from 1952 until 2002 over twelve generations.
The Eldorado was at or near the top of the Cadillac line. The original 1953 Eldorado convertible and the Eldorado Brougham models of 1957–1960 had distinct bodyshells and were the most expensive models that Cadillac offered those years. The Eldorado was never less than second in price after the Cadillac Series 75 limousine until 1966. Starting in 1967 the Eldorado retained its premium position in the Cadillac price structure, but was manufactured in high volumes on a unique, two-door personal luxury car platform.
The Eldorado carried the Fleetwood designation from 1965 through 1972, and was a modern revival of the pre-war Cadillac V-12 and Cadillac V-16 roadsters and convertibles.

Common Cadillac Eldorado problems
The Cadillac Eldorado is a classic car model known for its style and luxury. However, like any car, it has its share of common problems that potential buyers should be aware of.
For the 1974 Eldorado, one of the most common problems is with the convertible top, specifically the "sissor top" design. This design is complex and can cost up to $2000 to repair and recover. It's recommended to take the car to a mechanic with experience working on this type of top, as it's also used in other full-sized GM cars from 1971-1976.
Other minor problems that can add up include cracked right-side exhaust manifolds, climate control A/C controller issues, bumper fillers cracking, wood grain wheel insert flaking, and CV joints wearing out. These problems can be addressed by the owner if they are mechanically inclined, but more significant issues like engine or transmission rebuilds and most electrical work may be beyond their level of expertise.
For the 1983 Eldorado, a common problem is with the 4.1L engine, specifically when starting the car when it's hot. The engine may start and stop several times before suddenly running again perfectly. This problem can be caused by several factors, including fuel pump and filter issues, injector problems, and sensor issues. In this specific case, the owner had already changed several parts, including injectors, spark plugs, wires, sensors, fuel pump, and filters, but the problem persisted. The default codes were 11, 15, 21, and 28, which could not be erased using the normal procedure.
For the 1998 Eldorado, some common problems include poor reliability and cheap build quality, as well as issues with the trunk motor and front lower trim damage. However, other owners have reported positive experiences with the car, including a smooth ride and great comfort.
In general, the Cadillac Eldorado is known to have problems with the electronic dash and AC controls, particularly in the 1992-1993 models. The engine block is aluminum, while the heads are cast iron, which can lead to issues over time.
In conclusion, while the Cadillac Eldorado is a classic and luxurious car, potential buyers should be aware of the common problems that can arise, particularly with the convertible top, engine, and electronic components. It's recommended to take the car to a mechanic with experience working on these models and to be prepared for potential repairs and maintenance costs.

I hope you're doing well! I just wanted to share my experience with the Northstar. Back in 1994, I really wanted one, but the price was a whopping $63,000.00! I patiently waited and was finally able to pick one up in 2009 for only $1,800.00. I can only imagine how amazing the ride must have been when it was brand new.

Bought this car used when it was just 1 year old with 13000 miles. Today, it has 146000 miles. I've had to do the normal repairs, but nothing major except for a new air conditioning compressor. One window motor died and had to be replaced, but overall it still looks stylish and is fun to drive.

Luxury with performance sums up this vehicle in one sentence. Although I bought this vehicle used with 25,000 miles and 2 years old, it unfortunately turned out to be nothing but a nightmare. Despite the numerous electrical problems such as the car not starting, windows malfunctioning twice, power seat issues, cruise control malfunctioning three times, and stability control requiring four attempts before it was fixed, the dealer was wonderful and took care of all my problems. However, I eventually traded it for something more reliable.

The 1990 Cadillac El Dorado that my husband and I purchased a year ago has been a great car, despite the ABS box going out on it. With only 114,000 miles on it, we are determined to find a replacement and keep it for many more years to come.

This is a great car! Even when driven hard (which for me means daily) it just performs. Cadillac's Northstar engines are fantastic. If you ever have the chance to drive one, I highly recommend it.

Your 97 ETC isn't bad at all! Of course, you can't expect perfection when buying a used 16-year-old caddy with 126,*** miles. You've already made some great improvements, like getting a new battery, wipers, and even a new set of rims (even if they're from a junk yard). The Service Light may have come on for a few weeks, but it's just a bad O2 sensor that you haven't had the time or money to fix yet. Occasionally, it has a hard WARM start, but that could just be a leaky fuel injector (fingers crossed!). I'm impressed that you ordered the service manual (I always advise DIY-ers to do this) and I'm sure you can't wait to start learning more about how your N* works. With gas prices being so high, it may be best to use it as a weekend car and stick to your 01 Civic LX for daily use.

This product did not meet my expectations. The headbolts were too short and caused the aluminum heads to warp. The design needs improvement.

Vehicle year: 1992
This car has a stunning exterior, but unfortunately, the mechanical components have not lived up to expectations. As an engineer myself, I was disappointed to find that the engineering was not up to par. Despite this, I had high hopes for the ultimate American automotive experience. However, in my experience, I have had to replace 3 alternators, 4 water pumps, at least 5 serpentine belts, one catalytic converter, and have had numerous issues passing smog tests. Additionally, the driver's side window and mirror do not function properly, and the Bose sound system crackles. Recently, the heater has also stopped working. While it may not be the most reliable car I have owned, it certainly is the most visually appealing.

You'll love the exceptional performance and handling of this car, but it's worth noting that the Northstar engine tends to consume a lot of oil. Unfortunately, the cost of fixing it may exceed the value of the car.
Anderson Schowalter 2024-11-12
Vehicle year: 1992
Since purchasing this car, I have experienced multiple issues such as the ABS, A/C, brakes, and catalytic converter failing, as well as poor radio reception. Despite the dealer's inability to fix the radio, I am confident that Cadillac will stand behind me after my complaint. Although there were additional problems, each repair cost between $200-500.
