The GMC Envoy is a mid-size SUV manufactured and marketed by General Motors for the 1998 to 2009 model years over two generations. Adopting a nameplate used by GM Canada, the Envoy was a rebadged variant of the Chevrolet TrailBlazer, Oldsmobile Bravada, Buick Rainier, Isuzu Ascender, and Saab 9-7X.

General Motors assembled the model line at its Moraine Assembly (Moraine, Ohio) and Oklahoma City Assembly (Oklahoma City, Oklahoma). Both facilities were closed by 2008, leading to the discontinuation of the model line. The Envoy was not directly replaced in the GMC model line as General Motors transitioned its smaller SUVs to unibody-chassis designs, introducing the smaller GMC Terrain and larger GMC Acadia.

First generation (1998–2000)

The first generation GMC Envoy was introduced for the 1998 model year. Introduced a year before the Chevrolet TrailBlazer, the Envoy was the highest-trim version of the GMC Jimmy SUV. In line with the Oldsmobile Bravada, the Envoy was fitted with a leather-trim interior, floor-mounted shifter, and a largely monochromatic exterior with aluminum-alloy wheels. In line with the TrailBlazer and the Bravada, the Envoy trim was offered only in the five-door version.

The Envoy had many extra features not available on the regular Jimmy 4-door including: a remote trunk release, heated driver's and passenger's seats, a Bose sound system, and High Intensity Discharge headlights. Optional features included: a power sunroof, a panic alarm, an anti-theft system, and a power front driver & passenger seat.

GMC ended sales of the first generation Envoy after the 2000 model year as the division adopted the name to replace the entire Jimmy SUV line for 2002.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2009-04-04
  • VIN: 1GKDT13S062
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: GMC ISSUED A RECALL ON THE 1996 GMC ENVOY DRIVER'S SIDE DOOR CONSOLE WHICH OPERATES THE LOCKS AND WINDOWS WHICH CAN BURN OUT OR CAUSE FIRE. MY ENVOY DID THE SAME THING, SO OF COURSE I HAD TO HAVE IT REPLACED. I CALLED GM AFTER IT HAPPENED AND WAS TOLD IT WAS AN "ISOLATED INCIDENT". I NEVER HEARD ANYTHING FROM THEM AGAIN UNTIL MY MECHANIC TOLD ME ABOUT THE RECALL. I CALLED AND THEY SAID MY VIN NUMBER WASN'T INCLUDED IN THEIR RECALL. I LIVE IN UPSTATE NY, I HAVE THE BURNT CONSOLE ( FOR PROOF OF THIS FAULTY PART (ALONG WITH THEIR FAULTY SPARE TIRE HOIST WHICH WAS ANOTHER $400 PLUS, WHICH IS ANOTHER EMAIL FOR YOU). ALL I KNOW IS I'M OUT $491.25 FOR THE CONSOLE. GET ME ON THIS RECALL LIST! *TR

FUEL SYSTEM, OTHER,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2010-08-02
  • VIN: 1GKET66M566
  • Components: FUEL SYSTEM, OTHER,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
  • Summary: HELLO, WE PURCHASED THE 2006 YUKON DENALI ENVOY WITH LOW MILEAGE BETWEEN 30,000 ' 45,000 MILES. WE DIDN'T EXPECT TO RUN INTO MAJOR ( THROTTLE BODY AND FUEL SENSOR'TANK EMBEDDED) PROBLEMS. THERE ARE MANY COMPLAINTS LODGED ON THE INTERNET ABOUT THESE DTC ENGINE TROUBLE CODES (P2135, P0463). THE SUDDEN LOSS OF POWER IN THE MIDDLE OF TRAFFIC MAY CAUSE AN ACCIDENT. ACCORDING TO GMC TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETINS IN CORRECTING THE PROBLEM, THE FIRST DEALER TOLD ME THEY MUST FOLLOW A DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLESHOOTING FLOW CHART TO RESOLUTION. THE FIRST GM/GMC DEALER STATED THE FIRST STAGE OF THE DIAGNOSTIC FLOWCHART SAYS THE THROTTLE BODY SHOULD BE CLEANED AND NOT REPLACED. THE REASON NOT INITIALLY REPLACED IS BECAUSE THE THROTTLE BODY IS A HIGH PRICED ITEM. WE THEN TOOK IT BACK TO THE 1ST DEALER AT WHICH THE DIAGNOSTICAL FLOWCHART WAS AGAIN USED. ACCORDING TO THE FLOWCHART THE NEXT COURSE OF ACTION CALLS FOR REPLACEMENT OF THE THROTTLE BODY. AGAIN IT WAS SHORT LIVED. IF THE FLOWCHART DIAGRAMS ARE OUTDATED AND POORLY DESIGNED, THEY SHOULD BE UPDATED. THE TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETINS NEED TO BE BETTER WRITTEN SO UNNECESSARY COSTLY STEPS FOR THE CONSUMER COULD BE AVOIDED. WE THEN TOOK IT TO A DIFFERENT DEALER FOR THE 3RD TIME EXPLAINING THE REPEAT ENGINE LIGHT CODE OF P2135. THEY RAN THE CODES AGAIN STORED IN MEMORY AND RETRIEVED THE SAME P2135 CODE I RETRIEVED. THE SECOND DEALER ALSO REPLACED THE THROTTLE BODY ONLY FOR THE PROBLEM TO RESURFACE. AFTER SHARING WITH THEM THE RESOLUTION I RETRIEVED FROM THE INTERNET, ( WIRING HARNESS CONNECTED TO THE THROTTLE BODY ), EVENTUALLY THE GM ASE TECHNICIAN CORRECT THE WIRING HARNESS PROBLEM. RECOMMENDATIONS SHOULD BE MADE TO ALL DEALERSHIPS INCLUDING GM/GMC DEMANDING THAT REGIONAL CHRONIC TROUBLE GROUPS ( COUNTY SPECIFIC) BE ESTABLISHED TO COMBAT THESE EXTREME AUTOMOTIVE EXPENSES. THESE VEHICLES HAVING CONSISTENT HIGH PART REPLACEMENTS IS THE REAL GAUGE THAT SUBSTANTIATES AND WARRANT A NATIONWIDE RECALL ON THESE DEFECTIVE PARTS. *TR
