2008 Gmc Envoy problems

The GMC Envoy is a mid-size SUV manufactured and marketed by General Motors for the 1998 to 2009 model years over two generations. Adopting a nameplate used by GM Canada, the Envoy was a rebadged variant of the Chevrolet TrailBlazer, Oldsmobile Bravada, Buick Rainier, Isuzu Ascender, and Saab 9-7X.

General Motors assembled the model line at its Moraine Assembly (Moraine, Ohio) and Oklahoma City Assembly (Oklahoma City, Oklahoma). Both facilities were closed by 2008, leading to the discontinuation of the model line. The Envoy was not directly replaced in the GMC model line as General Motors transitioned its smaller SUVs to unibody-chassis designs, introducing the smaller GMC Terrain and larger GMC Acadia.

First generation (1998–2000)

The first generation GMC Envoy was introduced for the 1998 model year. Introduced a year before the Chevrolet TrailBlazer, the Envoy was the highest-trim version of the GMC Jimmy SUV. In line with the Oldsmobile Bravada, the Envoy was fitted with a leather-trim interior, floor-mounted shifter, and a largely monochromatic exterior with aluminum-alloy wheels. In line with the TrailBlazer and the Bravada, the Envoy trim was offered only in the five-door version.

The Envoy had many extra features not available on the regular Jimmy 4-door including: a remote trunk release, heated driver's and passenger's seats, a Bose sound system, and High Intensity Discharge headlights. Optional features included: a power sunroof, a panic alarm, an anti-theft system, and a power front driver & passenger seat.

GMC ended sales of the first generation Envoy after the 2000 model year as the division adopted the name to replace the entire Jimmy SUV line for 2002.

Common 2008 Gmc Envoy problems

The GMC Envoy, a popular SUV, has been known to have several common problems that have been reported by its owners. These issues range from exhaust leaks, faulty cluster gauges, excessive oil consumption, and ignition switch problems.

Exhaust leaks are a common problem in the GMC Envoy, particularly in the 2009 models. The noise from the exhaust leak is often loud and can be caused by a cracked exhaust manifold. Replacing the exhaust manifold can cost around $500, and the problem usually occurs around 80,000 miles. GMC has released a technical service bulletin (TSB) to provide more information on the intake manifold and how to service this issue. TSB #000601026I is the latest version of the bulletin and was released in August 2016.

Faulty cluster gauges are another common problem in the GMC Envoy. Owners of 2008 GMC Envoys have reported having problems turning the ignition switch on, with the problem occurring repeatedly. The issue starts within 70,000 miles of ownership, and replacing the ignition switch can cost at least $250. GMC has released a TSB to address this issue in September 2016. TSB #PIC5491J contains preliminary information for technicians on how to diagnose and fix this issue.

Excessive oil consumption is a problem that has been reported by owners of the GMC Envoy. The cause of this problem is not explicitly stated, but it is a known issue that can lead to increased maintenance costs.

Ignition switch problems are a common issue in the GMC Envoy, with owners reporting that the problem occurs repeatedly. The issue starts within 70,000 miles of ownership, and replacing the ignition switch can cost at least $250. GMC has released a TSB to address this issue in September 2016. TSB #PIC5491J contains preliminary information for technicians on how to diagnose and fix this issue.

In summary, the GMC Envoy has several common problems, including exhaust leaks, faulty cluster gauges, excessive oil consumption, and ignition switch problems. These issues can lead to increased maintenance costs and decreased reliability. GMC has released TSBs to address some of these issues, but it is essential to be aware of these problems before purchasing a GMC Envoy.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2017-07-21
  • VIN: 1GKDT13S982
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: WE HAVE A 2008 ENVOY. WE BOUGHT IT BRAND NEW IN 2008. THE IGNITION SWITCH HAS QUIT US 5 TIMES. WE USUALLY HAVE SOME WARNING. THE FIRST 3 TIMES , THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON BUT I COULD EVENTUALLY START THE CAR AND DRIVE IT TO A MECHANIC TO BE CHECKED OUT. THE 4TH TIME WE WERE HEADING OUT OF TOWN, CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON, MY HUSBAND PULLED OVER TO SIDE OF THE ROAD AND CAR QUIT. WOULD NOT START, HAD TO TOW IT TO MECHANIC. THIS LAST TIME, NO WARNING, JUST QUIT AS I WAS DRIVING HOME. I WAS ABLE TO GET IT STARTED AFTER SITTING IN THE MIDDLE OF THE STREET FOR 30 MINUTES OR SO, DROVE IT HOME, QUIT AGAIN AND HAD TO TOW IT TO MECHANIC. I AM AFRAID TO TAKE IT OUT ON THE HIGHWAY BY MYSELF. AFRAID THIS VEHICLE COULD CAUSE A WREAK, AND POSSIBLE KILL OR INJURE US OR OTHERS. THERE AREN'T VERY MANY MILES ON IT, SO IT IS NOT A WORN OUT VEHICLE.

EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2017-06-02
  • VIN: 1GKDS13S082
  • Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
  • Summary: I WAS DRIVING AT NIGHT AND MY LOW BEAM HEADLAMPS WENT OUT. THEY JUST WENT OFF. PANICKING, I PULLED OFF THE ROAD AND TRIED TURNING THEM OFF AND ON. TESTING, MY HIGH BEAMS WORKED, BUT MY LOWS WERE OFF. I TURNED THE CAR OFF AND WAITED A FEW MINUTES. ONCE TURNED BACK ON, MY LIGHTS WORKED. THIS THE FIRST TIME THIS HAPPENED, THIS HAS HAPPENED MULTIPLE TIMES AND THERE IS NO RHYME OR REASON AND YOU NEVER KNOW WHEN IT WILL HAPPEN. I HAVE SEEN THIS SAME ISSUE WITH A YEAR EARLIER AND WONDER IF THE PROBLEM EXTENDS TO NEWER MODELS. THIS RECALL SHOULD BE EXTENDED TO 2008 AS IT APPEARS MY VEHICLE IS HAVING THE SAME ISSUES. I HAVE HAD DIAGNOSTICS AND REPLACED HEADLAMPS...THE PROBLEM PERSISTS.

EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2017-06-13
  • VIN: 1GKDS13S182
  • Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
  • Summary: I FILED A COMPLAINT WITH NHTSA, COMPLAINT 10923972, ON 11/3/2016 REFERENCING MY DIM LIGHTS SPONTANEOUSLY GOING OUT AT NIGHT DRIVING DOWN THE HIGHWAY. I HAD RESEARCHED THIS PROBLEM AND FOUND THERE WAS A RECALL BECAUSE OF THE HEADLAMP DRIVER MODULE FAILING, BUT MY 2008 GMC ENVOY WAS NOT INCLUDED. I RECEIVED A LETTER FROM GMC THE END OF MAY 2017 PROVIDING ADDITIONAL PROTECTION FOR THIS PROBLEM AND IT WAS WORDED "IF THIS CONDITION "OCCURS" ON YOUR 2008 GMC ENVOY WITHIN 12 YEARS OR 150,000 MILES THE CONDITION WOULD BE REPAIRED AT NO CHARGE." WHEN I RECEIVED THE MAY 2017 LETTER MY VEHICLE HAD 152,000 MILES ON IT BUT WHEN I FILED THE COMPLAINT IN NOVEMBER 2016 IT HAD 142,000 MILES ON IT. GMC REFUSED TO REPAIR MY VEHICLE UNDER THE ADDITIONAL PROTECTION BECAUSE OF CURRENT MILEAGE EVEN THOUGH I HAD PROOF THE CONDITION "OCCURRED" AT 142,000 MILES.

EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2017-06-19
  • VIN: 1GKDT13S482
  • Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
  • Summary: I RECEIVED A LETTER FROM GMC IN MAY STATING THERE MAY BE AN ISSUE WITH HEADLAMP DRIVER MODULE (HDM) WHERE THE LOW BEAM HEADLAMPS WILL NOT WORK. AT THE TIME, MY HEADLAMPS WERE WORKING PROPERLY, SO THE LETTER ADVISED ME TO NOT TAKE MY VEHICLE TO MY GMC DEALER. HOWEVER, TWO DAYS AGO MY HEADLAMPS DID NOT WORK AT NIGHT WHILE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY. THIS CAUSED A SEVERE SAFETY ISSUE AS I COULD NOT SEE THE ROAD CLEARLY. I TOOK MY VEHICLE AND THE LETTER I RECEIVED TO MY GMC DEALER. THEY ADVISED ME THAT GMC WOULD NOT PAY TO FIX THE HEADLAMP PROBLEM AS I HAD MORE THAN 150,000 MILES IN A SITUATION WHERE CUSTOMER SAFETY IS INVOLVED, I BELIEVE GMC SHOULD PAY FOR THE REPAIRS. I HAD TO PAY FOR THE REPAIRS OUT-OF-POCKET. I STRONGLY BELIEVE THAT THIS SHOULD BE A SAFETY RECALL NOTICE INITIATED BY THE MANUFACTURER TO CORRECT THIS ISSUE. WE SHOULD NOT HAVE TO WAIT FOR MULTIPLE ACCIDENTS AND TRAFFIC FATALITIES TO PROMPT A RECALL FOR AN IMPORTANT SAFETY FEATURE ON A VEHICLE.

AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2017-02-21
  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: 1GKDS13S082
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: I WAS INVOLVED IN A HEAD ON COLLISION IN WHICH MY VEHICLE STRUCK TWO VEHICLES. THE FIRST VEHICLE MADE AN ILLEGAL LEFT HAND TURN IN FRONT OF MY VEHICLE AT A LIGHTED INTERSECTION. I WAS TRAVELING AT AN APPROXIMATE SPEED OF 50MPH ON A HIGHWAY INTERSECTION (POSTED SPEED LIMIT 55MPH). THE FRONT DRIVER'S SIDE OF MY VEHICLE STRUCK THE FRONT DRIVER'S SIDE OF THE FIRST VEHICLE (BLACK SEDAN PICTURED). MY VEHICLE CONTINUED TO STRIKE A SECOND VEHICLE (PICKUP IN PICTURE) THAT WAS STOPPED AT THE RED LIGHT OF THE CROSS STREET. MY SIDE AIRBAGS DEPLOYED WHILE THE FRONT AIRBAG DID NOT DEPLOY. SHOULD THE FRONT AIRBAG HAVE DEPLOYED? THERE WERE NO SERIOUS INJURIES, WHICH I AM GRATEFUL FOR, BUT I WANT TO MAKE SURE THIS DOESN'T HAPPEN TO SOMEONE ELSE. CRASH REPORT NUMBER 87-0070-87 IN WOOD COUNTY OHIO.

ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL (ESC),SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2016-11-18
  • VIN: 1GKET63M582
  • Components: ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL (ESC),SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: "TAKATA RECALL" WHEN I FIRST START THE CAR AND BEGIN TO ACCELERATE THE TRACTION CONTROL SYSTEM ACTIVATES CAUSING LOSE OF POWER - VERY DANGEROUS WHEN PULLING OUT INTO TRAFFIC. I HAVE TO DISENGAGE THE SYSTEM ON THE SHIFT HANDLE TO PREVENT THIS FROM HAPPENING. I AM ALSO EXPERIENCING THE ABS PROBLEM OF ACTIVATION WHEN COMING TO A STOP IN ALL CONDITIONS. IT IS ALREADY A RECALL FOR GMC VEHICLES UP TO 2004 BUT OBVIOUSLY NOT CORRECTED. THE TRACTION CONTROL SYSTEM ACTIVATES EVERY TIME AFTER FIRST STARTING THE CAR. THE ABS SYSTEM IS SPORATIC. NO WARNING THAT IT IS ABOUT TO HAPPEN. THESE SYSTEMS FAIL DAILY WITHOUT EXCEPTION.

EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2016-11-25
  • VIN: 1GKDT13S382
  • Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
  • Summary: WHILE OPERATING THE 2008 GMC ENVOY ON AN INTERSTATE I OBSERVED WHAT APPEARED TO BE A LACK OF LIGHT WHEN THE LOW BEAM HEADLIGHTS WERE TURNED ON. I DROVE TO A REST AREA AND CONFIRMED THAT THE LOW BEAM HEADLIGHTS WERE INOPERATIVE. THE BULBS WERE REMOVED AND BOTH BULB FILAMENTS APPEARED INTACT. FUSES, BREAKERS AND RELAYS WERE CHECKED FOR SECURE SEATING. THE HIGH BEAM HEADLIGHTS WERE OPERATIVE AND ALL OTHER LIGHTS FUNCTIONED. I AM AWARE OF DOCUMENTATION THAT COVERS THE ISSUE BUT ONLY UP TO THE 2007 MODEL YEAR. THERE ARE OTHER COMPLAINTS ON FILE DESCRIBING SIMILAR ISSUES. THE UNSAFE CONDITION THAT RESULTED WAS THE ABSENCE OF FORWARD LIGHTING WHILE OPERATING A MOTOR VEHICLE DURING TIMES THAT LIGHTING SHOULD BE USED. IT IS MY BELIEF THAT A SOLID STATE RELAY, DELCO PART NUMBER 15016745, IN THE #46 POSITION IN THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT FUSE PANEL, IS APPARENTLY THE CAUSE OF THE LIGHTING FAILURE. NO INJURIES, OR DAMAGES RESULTED FROM THE IN OPERATIVE LOW BEAM HEADLIGHT ISSUE.
