The Honda CR-V (also sold as the Honda Breeze in China since 2019) is a compact crossover SUV manufactured by Japanese automaker Honda since 1995. Initial models of the CR-V were built using the same platform as the Civic.

Honda began producing the CR-V in Sayama, Japan, and Swindon, United Kingdom, for worldwide markets, adding North American manufacturing sites in East Liberty, Ohio, United States, in 2007; El Salto, Jalisco, Mexico, in late 2007 (ended in early 2017); Alliston, Ontario, Canada, in 2012; and Greensburg, Indiana, United States, in February 2017. The CR-V is also produced in Wuhan for the Chinese market by Dongfeng Honda, and also marketed as the Breeze in China for the version produced at Guangzhou by Guangqi Honda.

Honda states "CR-V" stands for "Comfortable Runabout Vehicle," while the term "Compact Recreational Vehicle" is used in a British car review article that was republished by Honda, associating the model name with the Sports Utility Vehicle abbreviation of SU-V.

As of 2022, the CR-V is positioned between the smaller ZR-V (marketed as HR-V in North America) – which the CR-V shares platform with – and the larger North American market Passport/Pilot or the Chinese market Avancier/UR-V. It is currently Honda's best-selling vehicle in the world, and the second best-selling SUV globally in 2020.

VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-11-29
  • VIN: 2HKRM4H33CH
  • Components: VISIBILITY/WIPER
  • Summary: 2012 to 2014 honda crv's have a "blockage problem" on the driver's side of the heater core and the driver's side of the heater does not put out any heat. this is a safety issue as condensation builds up on driver's side of the windshield and snow/ice can build up on driver's side of the windshield due to no heat. honda has known of this problem (defect in heater driver side heater core) since at least 2014, see their service bulletin 14-063 dated november 20, 2014. our local honda dealer service department doesn't feel the heater flush produces worthwhile results on an ongoing basis and recommends heater core replacement at $1500-$2000. the service department at our local honda dealer was rather evasive about the cause of the driver's side heater core blockage/failure. my internet research leads me to believe the heater core has a defective design that throws off particles that accumulate in heater core and and gradually block driver's side of heater core and then no heat for driver's side including windshield. i'm using incident date of 11/29/23 because honda service department diagnosed heater core problem that date but driver's side had been gradually losing heat output for some month's. i attempted to resolve heater core issue with honda customer service but got nowhere.

The steering wheel returned to its original position and I again attempted to make the turn. This time I was able to turn the steering wheel all the way and complete the turn. No warning lights appeared. I was on a side street when this happened and there was no traffic, but this could have been cause for an accident if I had been driving on a busy road.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2019-12-01
  • VIN: 5J6RM3H57CL
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: As nearly every Honda CR-V driver of this generation will state, the car always experienced a startling 1-2 second grind upon cold start up in a Northeast USA winter. With 198,000 miles, it began to do it at every start, especially the first start-up in the morning. I knew a while back that it was a faulty VTC actuator that Honda first knew about in the 2000s, but didn’t resolve until recently. A local Honda dealer confirmed this noise is the “normal” VTC actuator noise, and shrugged it off. They also shrugged it off when it was under an extended, covered warranty and I complained about it then. As many reading this likely know, the VTC actuator malfunction has numerous implications to the tensioner and the timing chain, among other components of the engine. Honda was allowed to brush this off because this was never considered a mandatory safety recall. And clearly, there is an issue because there is a class action lawsuit currently in California and Illinois - what about the other 48 states? Or those who are not the original owners? (I received this car in 2017 when my uncle, the original owner, passed). The VTC actuator failure is not a mild inconvenience. It can have catastrophic consequences and Honda uses it to charge customers thousands of dollars. The entire experience of myself and many have truly made me lose faith in whatever the NHTSA is supposed to do in order to ensure the safety of drivers.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-07-25
  • VIN: 5J6RM3H57CL
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: In July of this year, I took a 20 minute drive with my kids and then went to a bagel shop. I tried to turn on the car and it acted like the battery had been drained. I got a jump, had my battery tested, and it was fine. A week later, it started happening nearly any time I took a short trip, and I needed to purchase a portable jump starter. I then had my alternator and battery tested again, and both were in working condition and passed. On September 12th, 2023, as I was pulling into my driveway, my power steering locked up on and off and I could not turn my car once it was in my driveway. I turned it off and it would not restart again (like I had left my lights on all night). I jumped it and let it run for an hour. I rode it around the block and it seemed fine, but I took it to a shop that I trust. They informed me that my alternator was only charging my battery when my high beam lights were on and that there was a service bulletin by Honda regarding a software update to the PCM if this occurred. Honda charged me $189 to have the software updated, and I needed a new battery because the faulty charging circuit fried a battery that I got this year. This should be a mandatory recall because if my kids and I were driving and my power steering locked like that on a highway, we could have been killed. If you had an actual recall on this, you could actually possibly save many lives on this popular vehicle!!!

SEATS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-09-21
  • VIN: JHLRM4H77CC
  • Components: SEATS
  • Summary: the lever on my back right seat will not release seat down. Needed to put a large item in my car and ended up having to tie it to the roof instead and drive very slowly on the interstate since my seat would not go down. did not feel safe and want to get this figured out asap since I am a furniture dealer. I popped the plastic "cap" off to see what is causing the issue... part of the white plastic piece of the upper lever has snapped off and that is causing the lever to not catch and seat not go down. I have not taken it anywhere yet as I can see what the problem is and believe those plastic parts are not sold separately so I suspect I need a whole new lever. There were zero warning signs or messages, lever just did not release starting a couple days ago. Thanks

STEERING,POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-07-20
  • VIN: 5J6RM4H5XCL
  • Components: STEERING,POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: While I was driving the car, an indicator with "Battery" symbol showed up on the monitor. All off a sudden I see all the lights went ON/OFF and I couldn't steer the wheel. The Power Steering stopped working and the car was running. Since I was near a 4-way stop sign, I managed to pull my car on the side without an accident. Then I got roadside assistance to tow my car to a mechanic shop. They said the "Alternator" need to be replaced. I did that and went for a "Battery" checkup based on the indicator. The battery was good. It would have been a life threatening incident if I were somewhere on a highway. I wanted to make sure this is taken care seriously by the manufacturer and find a fix. Because it just impacts all electrical things and we can't steer the car!

STEERING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-06-23
  • VIN: 2HKRM3H7XCH
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: In September of 2012, my wife and I purchase a new Honda CR-V. We have owned it since and it has been a reliable vehicle. Unfortunately, on Friday, June 23, 2023, my wife called me from the gym parking lot stating that the power steering on her 2012 Honda CR-V was not working. I drove up to the parking lot and confirmed that the electric power steering system ("EPS" or "EPAS") was not working. When this condition exist, the steering and turning is almost IMPOSSIBLE to implement. The vehicle was towed to Space Coast Honda in Cocoa Florida late in the day. The next morning, Saturday, June 24, 2023, the dealer called and said that the EPS had failed and the module would have to be replaced. They estimated the delivery of the part to take one to two weeks. The next week, the dealer said that the part is backed ordered and would now take 2-4 weeks. On July 26, after almost five weeks of sitting in the side parking lot of the dealer, I went out to the dealer to find out more about why the part was taking so long to arrive. They then said that they have no idea when it will be available and could take a year…..or more! On Wednesday, July 26, 2003, I drove out to the dealer to remove more personal items along with starting the vehicle. When I did start the vehicle, the Power Steering functioned properly. We returned later in the day and drove the CR-V home. I have used the CR-V several times and the power steering now works fine…..BUT FOR HOW LONG? Since that time, we have found out that the failure of the Honda CR-V EPS system has been known to Honda for many years. There are numerous YouTube videos and web sites which describe this failure and Honda’s failure to address this safety concern to ensure that drivers of this model can safely and reliably utilize their vehicle. However, with no regard to the safety of the Honda CR-V driver, passengers and others around them, Honda continues to sell CR-Vs (2012-2016…and perhaps with other years affected) with this known

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-06-14
  • VIN: 5J6RM4H50CL
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: I was at a corner waiting for traffic to clear so I could make a turn left. When I started to accelerate the vehicle started to hesitate and continued. The on coming car had to slam on their brakes and swerve to avoid hitting my passenger side. Since that time I had found out there was a service bulletin relating to this problem. Honda Service Bulletin 17-040. This is my granddaughters car and now I am reluctant to let her drive the vehicle. It is a very serious safety issue!! My frustration is that when I have discussed the issue with 2 different Honda dealers they didn't disclose there was a bulleting but rather recommended changing the transmission fluid and the information was confusing. One dealer recommended changing the fluid once and another recommended I change it three times at the same appointment. Since the incident I have had an opportunity to drive my other granddaughters 2011 Honda CRV and it is displaying the same shudder issue on acceleration and when you are at 40 miles and try to accelerate which she noticed. Obviously, if you were trying to pass another vehicle on a two lane highway and it started the shudder you would be involved in a head on crash resulting in serious injury or death. I believe there should be a recall to correct this problem. The cost to replace the torque converter is $3,000 +. The bulletin 17-040 states the affect vehicles are 2012-14. It needs to be revised to include 2011 Honda CRV vehicle. I found the bulletin myself through a group that shares information regarding Honda CRV vehicles. The bulletin was issued on May 20, 2017 06492 Version 1. The vehicle number for the 2011 Honda CRV is 5J6RE4H72BL017198

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2019-04-05
  • VIN: 5J6RM4H7XCL
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: VTC actuator causing car to make grinding sound upon startup. The problem started 2 months after I bought the car from Brandon Honda, in FL. I drove it to Minnesota with no problem but as soon as I was there it was sputtering at every start up. This will be a costly repair, but due to previous litigation you would think it would be recalled. Many CRVs from the same year up north have the same problem. So It's pretty common. This could ruin the engine repair should offered on the faulty part that goes bad at lower temos. Just like the other common issue ( the AWD)

  • VIN: 2HKRM3H79CH
  • Components: TIRES
  • Summary: SUV was on highway driving at around 60 mph when the front driver side dipped and heard a loud noise. Tire went flat and there was a lot of holes on the sidewall of the tire. I had vehicle towed to Tire Plus and the technician said he had not seen a tire fail like that before. He stated that it could have been a defect in the tire. The tire size was BL 225/65R17 102H. 2012 Honda Cr-v recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 3 recalls for different components of the 2012 Honda Cr-v.

2013-04-15
  • Manufacturer: Honda (American Honda Motor Co.)
  • Components: POWER TRAIN:AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION
  • Summary: Honda is recalling certain model year 2012-2013 CR-V, Odyssey, and model year 2013 Acura RDX vehicles. During sub-freezing temperatures, the brake-shift interlock blocking mechanism may become slow and allow the gear selector to be moved from the Park position without pressing the brake pedal. As such, these vehicles fail to conform to the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 114, "Theft Protection and Rollaway Prevention."
  • Consequence: If the gear selector is moved from the park position without pressing the brake pedal it can allow the vehicle to roll away, increasing the risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: Honda will notify owners and instruct them to take their vehicle to a Honda or Acura dealer. The dealer will install an updated brake shift interlock blocking mechanism free of charge. The recall began on May 13, 2013. Owners may contact Honda at 1-800-999-1009. Honda's campaign recall numbers are S96, S97, and S98.
2012-10-16

  • Components: LATCHES/LOCKS/LINKAGES:DOORS:LATCH
  • Summary: Honda is recalling certain model year 2012 Honda CR-V and model year 2013 Acura ILX vehicles. If the manual or power door lock is activated while an interior front door handle is being operated by an occupant, the cable connecting the interior door handle to the door latch mechanism may become loose and move out of position. There is a possibility that the cable can move far enough out of position to prevent the door from properly latching.
  • Consequence: If the door is not fully latched, the door may open while driving or in a crash, increasing the risk of personal injury to the vehicle occupants.
  • Remedy: Honda will notify owners, and dealers will replace the front door latch assemblies in the affected vehicles, free of charge. Additionally, the interior front door handles in certain Honda CR-Vs will also be replaced, free of charge. The safety recall is expected to begin on, or about, August 16, 2012. Negative 2012 Honda Cr-v car reviews

  1. Rex Bednar 2024-11-27

I purchased this vehicle for my wife to replace her 2005 Chevy Equinox. Living in a cold climate, I wanted to ensure that she had a reliable car. Unfortunately, we have experienced some issues with the car, including multiple battery replacements, steering wheel lock-ups, and electric power steering failures in cold temperatures. Recently, the oil pressure sensor blew out while warming up the car, causing the engine to fail. However, I must say that the roadside assistance provided by the company has been exceptional. It may be better suited for warmer climates, but we have had some difficulties with it in our area.

The 2012 CR-V is a great car that offers a lot of practical features. Everything is within the driver's reach, including climate controls, radio controls (which are redundant on the steering wheel), bluetooth, etc. The instrument cluster has a fresh design and the fuel economy is certainly respectable for a small SUV (I average about 26-29 depending on type of driving: city v. highway). There is ample room in the rear seats for average-sized adults. The powertrain operates very smoothly and the vehicle, overall, has a very car-like driving demeanor.

I have owned this car since it was brand new and have had some unfortunate experiences with it. Despite the positive reviews, I have had to replace the battery during the first winter at 2,000 miles, and the all-wheel drive has gone out at low temperatures. Additionally, I have had to repair the roof four times, and the dealer is no longer willing to work on it. I have also had to replace the battery three times. Although these repairs have been major and required a full day at the shop each year, the car has 54,000 miles on it. I have decided to sell it at a loss, but I remain confident in my decision to never purchase a Honda again.

Before buying my Honda CRV, I did a lot of research and was confident that I was purchasing a more energy-efficient vehicle that required little maintenance. However, I experienced some issues with the car shortly after purchasing it new in February. At under 2,000 miles, the battery had to be replaced, and I also started hearing a chirping noise. During my first visit to the mechanic, they replaced a belt, but the chirping noise persisted. On my second visit, they replaced a pulley and the alternator, and on the third visit, they replaced the water pump. All of this engine work was done on a vehicle with under 4,000 miles on it. Additionally, the black rubber door molding around the passenger doors started drooping, and the final straw was when the mirror on the passenger's visor fell off! I hope that these issues can be resolved soon.

I purchased this car as a replacement for my beloved but worn-out 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee. I test drove several other cars, including a 2012 Kia Sorrento, a 2012 Chevy Equinox, and a 2012 Volkswagen Tiguan (which was my first choice). Ultimately, I chose this car because it was the most spacious and affordable option. Although I was not initially thrilled about my first-ever brand new car purchase, I have unfortunately grown to dislike it due to its uncomfortable ride. Even my dad, who has been a truck driver for 40 years, has complained about the discomfort. As a result, I am considering trading it in or getting rid of it soon. It was a mistake.

Positive 2012 Honda Cr-v car reviews

I purchased my Black CR-V about four months ago and it has been an excellent vehicle. The gas mileage is much better than my previous two CR-Vs, which were a 2002 and 2006. I have been getting 24 to 27 mpg in the city and 29 to 34 mpg on the highway, sometimes as high as 37 on the highway. The drive is very smooth and enjoyable, even more so than my older CR-Vs. I upgraded to much nicer 17-inch alloy wheels with 225/65R17 sized tires from Discount Tire Co, which greatly improved the vehicle's appearance. I found that Honda dealerships are quite expensive when it comes to purchasing new alloy wheels.

I'm so glad to hear that you're enjoying your new CRV! It sounds like you're already discovering some of its great features, like the impressive fuel efficiency and the easy-to-use back seats. I hope you continue to have a positive experience with your new car. Thank you for sharing your thoughts!

I recently purchased a 2012 CR-V EX-L in White Pearl after examining, test driving, negotiating, and buying it. My family and I have been driving BMWs, including the X3 and 325Xi Wagon, but my mom's 2002 CR-V has been going strong for over 10 years with only routine maintenance, a new battery, and new tires. We still think it's a great vehicle, the right size, and enjoyable to drive. In our opinion, the new 2012 CR-V, which costs $29k drive out, is just as enjoyable as the X3, which costs $46k drive out, and dare I say, even a better driver, as it doesn't bounce over rough roads like the X3 does. While the CR-V may not win any drag races, its 31 mpg highway is much more relevant and practical.

I purchased my CRV EXL 3 weeks ago and I absolutely love this vehicle. I traded in my 2009 CRV EXL and I must say, it is a significant improvement. Driving this car is so much fun, it steers better, rides better, is much quieter, more comfortable, and I am getting 23.5 mpg around town driving. The new design is absolutely beautiful both inside and out. For those critics who claim the CRV needs a 6 cylinder engine, I highly disagree. This car has plenty of power and pick up for most purposes.

This is my 3rd CRV, so I'm definitely sold on Honda. I mostly love this one, but unfortunately, I had an issue with the battery. It died after only seven months, which was very strange, but it was in the middle of winter during a string of below zero days. I replaced the battery, but then it died again six months later. Triple A couldn't even jump it, so I had to slow charge it and then take it to the dealer. As it turns out, there is a battery drain issue with these models (Honda Service Bulletin 12-041). Thankfully, the dealer upgraded the software, and so far, everything seems to be working well.
