2006 Land rover Lr3 problems
The Land Rover Discovery is a series of seven-seater family SUVs, produced under the Land Rover marque, from the British manufacturer Land Rover, and later Jaguar Land Rover. The series is currently in its fifth iteration (or generation, according to the manufacturer), the first of which was introduced in 1989, making the Discovery the first new model series since the launch of the 1970 Range Rover – on which it was based – and only the third new product line since the conception of the Land Rover (vehicle and brand) by Rover in 1948. The model is sometimes called influential, as one of the first to market a true off-road capable family car.
Although the Range Rover had originally been designed as an everyday four wheel drive car that could be used as both a utility vehicle and a family car, it had progressively moved upmarket through its life to evolve into a luxury vehicle sold at a much higher price point. The Discovery was intended to fulfill the role the Range Rover originally was intended for; a segment which was now dominated by Japanese rivals such as the Nissan Patrol, Mitsubishi Pajero and Toyota Land Cruiser. Although positioned below the Range Rover in the company's line-up, the vehicle was both longer and higher, offered more room in the back, and optionally also more seats. Space utilization became more sophisticated in later iterations, but the series keeps offering seats for seven occupants. Despite originally being sold as an affordable alternative to the Range Rover, the Discovery has also progressively moved upmarket through its successive generations to become a bonafide luxury SUV.
The second Discovery (1998) was called the Series II, and though featuring an extended rear body, was otherwise an updated facelift, which carried on the 100 in (2,540 mm) wheelbase frame and rigid, live front and rear axles of the original Range Rover into 2004.
The third iteration – succeeding the series I and II in 2004 - was either titled the Discovery 3 or simply LR3 (in North America and the Middle East). This was the first all-original design for the Discovery. Although it followed the 2002 third generation Range Rover, also switching to fully independent suspension, it still received a separate, but integrated body and frame (IBF) structure. The fourth iteration, as of 2009 – like the series II, was again mainly an update of the new generation – marketed as the Discovery 4, or Land Rover LR4 for North American and Middle Eastern markets.
The fifth iteration of the Discovery, introduced in 2017, no longer sports a numeric suffix. Unlike the previous two generations, it now benefits from a unitized body structure, making it lighter than its predecessor.

Common 2006 Land rover Lr3 problems
Based on complaints from owners of the Land Rover LR3 2006, several common problems have been reported:
- Transmission Lever and Ignition Switch Problem: A reported issue with the ignition switch and transmission lever allowed the key to be removed from the ignition without the transmission lever being in park mode. This could result in the vehicle rolling away unexpectedly, causing potential damage to the car and other vehicles. Land Rover issued a recall in 2006 to address this issue for affected 2005 and 2006 models.
- Electrical Issues: Some complaints included minor electrical issues such as paint peeling, drivetrain issues, and fuel delivery system leaks. Additionally, there were reports of suspension problems and a recall related to steering column issues for the 2005 and some 2006 models.
- Suspension Problems: The LR3 2006 faced suspension problems, including issues with the air suspension system. Common complaints included air spring leaks, faulty air compressors, and broken valve blocks within the air suspension system. These problems could lead to a bumpy ride, lowered ride height, and issues with the air compressor.
- Cooling System Issues: The LR3 2006 was prone to overheating due to water pump or thermostat failures. Owners reported issues with cabin heating, even after replacing these components, indicating potential clogs in the automatic dots or heater core. Regular coolant flushes and checking for clogs in the heater core were recommended solutions .
- Front Lower Control Arms: The LR3 2006 had problems with the front lower control arms, where the bushings tended to fail, causing a popping noise. It was advised to replace the entire control arm due to potential ball joint failures as well .
These common problems reported by owners of the Land Rover LR3 2006 highlight various issues ranging from safety concerns like airbag malfunctions and transmission problems to mechanical issues such as suspension and cooling system failures. Regular maintenance and prompt attention to these problems are crucial to ensure the optimal performance and safety of the vehicle.

ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2014-09-04
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: 2006 LR3 WITH ONLY 93K MILES HAD THE TIMING CHAIN BREAK WHILE ON THE HIGHWAY AND THE ENGINE IMMEDIATELY SHUT DOWN. THE VEHICLE HAS A FULL SERVICE HISTORY AT AN AUTHORIZED LAND ROVER DEALER SHOWING RECOMMENDED MAINTENANCE HAS BEEN PERFORMED DURING THE LIFE OF THE VEHICLE. THE DAMAGE TO THE ENGINE (VALVES ETC.) IS ESTIMATED AT $5500 TO REPAIR. THE TIMING CHAIN IS MADE OF METAL AND BASED ON INDUSTRY EXPERTISE IS NOT SUPPOSED TO BREAK FOR THE LIFE OF THE ENGINE OR PAST 200,000+ MILES. RESEARCH ONLINE SHOWS THIS HAS HAPPENED TO OTHER LR3 OWNERS WITH VEHICLES WITH LESS THAN 100K MILES. BASED UPON THE EXPECTATIONS FOR THE LIFESPAN OF A TIMING CHAIN AND OTHER SIMILAR INCIDENTS, I BELIEVE THERE MAY BE A DEFECTIVE PART ON THIS VEHICLE ASSOCIATED WITH THE TIMING CHAIN AND IT'S RELATED COMPONENTS. THERE ARE NO MANUFACTURER RECOMMENDED GUIDELINES TO REPLACE THE TIMING CHAIN PRIOR TO 100K MILES AND IT IS EXPECTED TO LAST FAR LONGER THAN 100K MILES BASED UPON NORMAL WEAR AND TEAR FOR THIS VEHICLE. WE HAVE ONLY USED THE VEHICLE US ROADS AS YOU WOULD A TYPICAL AUTOMOBILE (NO OFF-ROADING HOBBIES ETC.) WE ARE PURSUING THIS MATTER WITH LAND ROVER DIRECTLY AND REPORTING THIS AS A SAFETY ISSUE TO ALERT OTHER LR3 OWNERS. *TR
SUSPENSION PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2014-06-11
- VIN: SALAE24406A
- Components: SUSPENSION
- Summary: I BEGAN TO NOTICE A RATTLING NOISE COMING FROM UNDERNEATH THE DRIVER'S SIDE, WHILE DRIVING AT ANY SPEED. AFTER A WEEK, THE "SUSPENSION FAULT" LIGHT CAME ON. I WAS TOLD THE SUSPENSION COMPRESSOR NEEDED TO BE REPLACED, SO I WENT AHEAD WITH THE REPAIRS AT A COST OF $1600. WHEN I PICKED UP THE VEHICLE AND TESTED THE SUSPENSION, IT WOULD NOT RAISE INTO OFF ROAD HEIGHT. IT LOWERED FINE, BUT WHEN I PUT IT IN NORMAL HEIGHT, ONLY THE REAR WOULD RAISE. IT ALSO TOOK A LOT LONGER THAN USUAL. I DIDN'T EVEN GET IT OUT OF THE SHOP PARKING LOT BEFORE THE SUSPENSION FAULT LIGHT LIT UP AGAIN. AFTER RESEARCHING THIS PROBLEM ONLINE AND FINDING OUT THAT THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM THAT SOMETIMES TAKES 2 OR 3 ATTEMPTS TO CORRECT, IT'S OBVIOUS THERE'S A DEFECT WITH THE SUSPENSION SYSTEM OR THE ACTUAL COMPRESSOR. EITHER WAY, THIS SHOULD BE COVERED BY LANDROVER. I HOPE THEY DO THE RIGHT THING AND ISSUE A RECALL. *TR

- Fire: 1
- VIN: SALAE25476A
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,STRUCTURE,ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL (ESC)
- Summary: LANDROVER LR 3 HAVE A KNOWN PROBLEM OF HAVING WATER COLLECT IN THE SUNROOF AREA DUE TO BLOCKAGE IN SOME DRAINAGE TUBE FROM DEBRIS. CLEANING OF THESE TUBES IS NOT A REGULAR PART OF MAINTENANCE IF YOU TAKE YOUR VEHICLE TO THE DEALERSHIP FOR SCHEDULED MAINTENANCE OR SERVICE. THE WATER COLLECT AND LEAKS INTO THE CABIN DIRECTLY OVER THE RADIO AND MIDDLE CONSOLE. IT ALSO LEAKS OVER THE DASHBOARD NEAR THE PASSENGER HEAT REGISTER AND IN THE DRIVER'S SIDE DASHBOARD AREA OVER THE HEAT REGISTER. WATER SEEPS INTO THE ELECTRIC SYSTEM (THE MAIN BCM) THAT CONTROLS MANY IMPORTANT FUNCTIONS OF THE VEHICLE OPERATION. SO FAR I HAVE A SHORT IN THE RADIO. MANY OF THE LANDROVER FORUMS ONLINE HAVE SEVERAL CUSTOMERS AND OWNERS OF LANDROVER LR3 THAT HAVE EXPERIENCED THIS PROBLEM. THIS DEFECT IN THE DRAINAGE SYSTEM FOR THE SUNROOF COULD CAUSE SERIOUS DAMAGE / SHORTING OUT OF THE BCM THAT CONTROLS THE ENTIRE VEHICLE. - Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: CHECK FOR TRANSMISSION SOFTWARE UPDATE, AS IT INITIALLY SEEMED TO HAVE THE MUST DISCUSSED PROBLEM OF HARSH AND IRREGULAR SHIFTING WHEN ROLLING TO A STOP AND THEN RE-ACCELERATING. THIS PROBLEM HAS CONTINUED INTERMITTANTLY AND NOW THE VEHICLE SOMETIMES DROPS COMPLETELY OUT OF GEAR WHEN SLOWING DOWN OR TURNING. THE VEHICLE THEN DROPPED OUT OF GEAR AND I HAD NO ACCELERATION, AS IT WAS SUDDENLY LIKE I WAS IN NEUTRAL. HIGH RPM.... BUT NO MOVEMENT. AFTER A FEW SECONDS, THE TRANSMISSION SEEMS TO FIND "DRIVE" AND I CAN THEN MOVE FORWARD WITH NORMAL ACCELERATION. *TR
SUSPENSION,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2011-07-18
- VIN: SALAE25466A
- Components: SUSPENSION,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: AS WE WERE DRIVING, THE SUSPENSION FAULT LIGHT CAME ON AND IMMEDIATELY WENT OFF. WE THOUGHT IT MAY BE DUE TO THE ROAD CONDITIONS. ABOUT 30 MINUTES LATER, WE STOPPED TO GAS UP AND WHEN WE WERE BACK ON THE ROAD, THE RADIO WOULD NOT WORK. NO SOUND BUT A CRACKING SOUND WAS COMING FROM THE RADIO. AFTER A HOUR, THE RADIO CAME BACK ON. LAST WEEK, I WAS DRIVING AND THE SUSPENSION LIGHT WAS CAME ON AND OFF EVERY 5 OR 10 MINUTES, IT SEEMED. THEN A LOUD CHIME WITH A SUSPENSION FAULT IN RED LETTERS. AT A STOP LIGHT, THE VEHICLE WAS GOING UP AND DOWN LIKE IT HAS A MIND OF ITS OWN. KINDLY OF SPOOKY. OF COURSE, OUR 2006 LR3 IS OUT OF WARRANTY. I CALLED THE DEALER AND IT WILL COST $125 FOR A DIAGNOSIS BUT IT WILL GO TOWARD THE COST OF THE SERVICE WHATEVER IS NEEDED. ALL I SEE IS MAJOR DOLLARS SIGNS DUE TO OUR LAST EXPERIENCE. THE DEALER QUOTED US A COST OF $250 FOR A PROBLEM MY HUSBAND FIXED WITH A $12 FUSE. SO MY HUSBAND WILL NOT TAKE IT BACK TO THE DEALER NOT UNLESS IT IS A MUST.

SUSPENSION PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2010-09-03
- VIN: SALAG25476A
- Components: SUSPENSION
- Summary: I BOUGHT A 2006 LR3 ABOUT A YEAR AGO FROM A DEALER IN SOUTH FLORIDA. THE VEHICLE ONLY HAS 39K MILES ON IT AND LAST WEEK THE SUSPENSION FAULT INDICATOR CAME ON. I TOOK THE TRUCK TO THE DEALER TO HAVE A DIAGNOSTIC AND THEY TOLD ME THAT THE SUSPENSION COMPRESSOR IS NOT WORKING. TO REPLACE THE PART IS $1200 BECAUSE THE CAR IS NO LONGER UNDER WARRANTY. IF THE COMPRESSOR FAILS, THE SUSPENSION FAILS AND THE TRUCK CAN END UP RIDING ON THE TIRES AT ANY TIME UNTIL THE COMPRESSOR IS FIXED. I SPOKE WITH LAND ROVER NORTH AMERICA AND THEY WILL NOT PAY TO REPLACE THE DEFECTIVE PART. SO NOW I AM STUCK WITH A $1200 REPAIR ON A VEHICLE THAT ONLY HAS 39K MILES. *TR
SUSPENSION,ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2009-09-19
- Components: SUSPENSION,ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
- Summary: VEHICLE HAS APPROXIMATELY 65K MILES AND HAVE BEEN NOTIFIED THAT THE SUSPENSION AIR COMPRESSOR MUST BE REPLACED. THIS APPEARS TO BE A VERY COMMON PROBLEM. THE DEALER IS UNABLE TO REPAIR THE VEHICLE AT THIS TIME DUE TO THE PART BEING ON BACK ORDER DUE TO THE NUMBER OF VEHICLES NEEDING THIS SAME REPAIR. THE COMPRESSORS ARE OBVIOUSLY NOT THE BEST QUALITY WITH THE ELEVATED LEVEL OF FAILURES. HOPEFULLY THE PART COMES IN BEFORE A COMPLETE FAILURE OF THE COMPRESSOR. *TR
TIRES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2007-05-10
- VIN: SALAD24416A
- Components: TIRES
- Summary: UNEVEN TIRE WEAR ON THE 2006 LAND ROVER LR3, LAND ROVER KNOWS THERE IS A DEFECT BUT HAS DONE NOTHING TO REPAIR. I AM ON MY 3RD SET OF TIRES AND MY LR LR3 ONLY HAS 40,000 MILES. AFTER DOING RESEARCH, THERE SEEMS TO BE A LOT OF CONSUMERS WITH THE SAME PROBLEM. LAND ROVER JUST GIVES ME EXCUSE AFTER EXCUSE AND I HAVE TO PAY FOR THE NEW TIRES AND AN ALIGNMENT. THE WEAR ON THE TIRE IS SO SEVERE IT CAN BE REALLY DANGEROUS ON THE ROADS. *TR

I bought two LR3 HSE's in 12/06 and I can honestly say that I have never enjoyed owning a car as much as these. I have not had to spend a single penny on service and although there have been a few minor issues during the 42K miles, the dealers have taken excellent care of me the entire time. I have clients who all drive high-end cars and they just can't stop raving about the LR3's. They definitely deserve 5 stars!
-
I previously owned a 2002 BMW 530i and loved its great performance and 25 mpg on the highway. However, I wanted a change and decided to switch back to a sport utility vehicle. While the LR3 rides great and is dependable, I learned a painful lesson at the fuel pump with this vehicle. Unfortunately, the fuel mileage is so bad that you will end up filling up $50 to $60 every 3 to 4 days. Therefore, I would only recommend getting one if you absolutely need an SUV. Overall, it is a great vehicle.
-
I'm glad to hear that you've had such a positive experience with your LR3! It sounds like you've really put it to the test, both on and off the road. Thanks for sharing your thoughts with me.
-
Great car! It handles excellently in severe weather. The sound system is sweet and the seats are smooth. Bluetooth is also super simple.
-
I recently purchased a new LR3 and have been thoroughly enjoying the smooth and quiet ride it provides. While it may feel a bit sluggish on the freeway, once it reaches cruising speed it really shines and the ride remains smooth. I have experienced some issues with the check engine light coming on and off, but I found that ensuring the gas cap is screwed on tightly resolves this problem. It is worth noting that the LR3 requires super unleaded (91 octane) fuel, which can be quite expensive. Despite this, I am overall very satisfied with my LR3 and enjoy driving it.

I've been driving this vehicle for a year and a half now, and while it hasn't been the smoothest ride, I'm grateful that it's only a 2-year lease. I did have to replace all the tires at 16,000 miles, and there have been a few issues with water leaking in from the overhead lamps when it rains. It's been in the shop a few times over the past year and a half for various flaws, but overall it's been a decent car. Although, there was one time during a family trip in the winter when the LR3 shut down in the middle of the road, which was quite scary.

This is my second Land Rover, but unfortunately, I am not enjoying it as much as I used to. The headrests are causing me some neck pain, which is a bit frustrating. I have had some issues with the tires and my LR3 broke down unexpectedly, which was not ideal. I am considering other options, such as a Toyota, which I have heard hold their value well.

I previously owned a Ford vehicle for about 4 months before deciding to switch to a more reliable car. Initially, I was drawn to the new and improved design as well as the powerful engine. However, I soon realized that the car was not as dependable as I had hoped. I had to visit the dealership multiple times due to issues such as the 'check engine' light coming on and a total electronic malfunction. Unfortunately, my overall experience with the car was quite unpleasant.

The test drive was impressive, and I could easily visualize myself driving on off-roads during the weekends. However, I did notice a few issues with the car. The windshield sensors were not working correctly, and there was no intermittent control. Additionally, I had to manually operate them, which could be hazardous on long drives. The car has been in the shop for at least three weeks due to trouble with the compressor and rattles that we can't seem to get rid of. There are also a lot of blind spots, and the climate control buttons are hard to find. While the car has a nice exterior appearance, it should be more luxurious for the price. Furthermore, the car doesn't have a lot of pick up for a V8, which is a bit disappointing. Overall, I believe that with some improvements, this car could be a great option for long trips.

This truck is perfect for families and running errands, but it really shines on road trips up and down the east coast thanks to its 300HP and command feature. The ride feels solid and luxurious, although it is not the most fuel-efficient due to its weight. However, replacing the air filter with a K & N can improve both fuel mileage and performance. I love the LR3's combination of utilitarian design and luxury features. If you're looking for a purposeful luxury truck, the LR3 is the perfect choice. Unlike many competitors, it doesn't come across as a poseur or ostentatious, but rather as a practical and stylish option.
