The Land Rover Discovery is a series of seven-seater family SUVs, produced under the Land Rover marque, from the British manufacturer Land Rover, and later Jaguar Land Rover. The series is currently in its fifth iteration (or generation, according to the manufacturer), the first of which was introduced in 1989, making the Discovery the first new model series since the launch of the 1970 Range Rover – on which it was based – and only the third new product line since the conception of the Land Rover (vehicle and brand) by Rover in 1948. The model is sometimes called influential, as one of the first to market a true off-road capable family car.

Although the Range Rover had originally been designed as an everyday four wheel drive car that could be used as both a utility vehicle and a family car, it had progressively moved upmarket through its life to evolve into a luxury vehicle sold at a much higher price point. The Discovery was intended to fulfill the role the Range Rover originally was intended for; a segment which was now dominated by Japanese rivals such as the Nissan Patrol, Mitsubishi Pajero and Toyota Land Cruiser. Although positioned below the Range Rover in the company's line-up, the vehicle was both longer and higher, offered more room in the back, and optionally also more seats. Space utilization became more sophisticated in later iterations, but the series keeps offering seats for seven occupants. Despite originally being sold as an affordable alternative to the Range Rover, the Discovery has also progressively moved upmarket through its successive generations to become a bonafide luxury SUV.

The second Discovery (1998) was called the Series II, and though featuring an extended rear body, was otherwise an updated facelift, which carried on the 100 in (2,540 mm) wheelbase frame and rigid, live front and rear axles of the original Range Rover into 2004.

The third iteration – succeeding the series I and II in 2004 - was either titled the Discovery 3 or simply LR3 (in North America and the Middle East). This was the first all-original design for the Discovery. Although it followed the 2002 third generation Range Rover, also switching to fully independent suspension, it still received a separate, but integrated body and frame (IBF) structure. The fourth iteration, as of 2009 – like the series II, was again mainly an update of the new generation – marketed as the Discovery 4, or Land Rover LR4 for North American and Middle Eastern markets.

The fifth iteration of the Discovery, introduced in 2017, no longer sports a numeric suffix. Unlike the previous two generations, it now benefits from a unitized body structure, making it lighter than its predecessor.

Common 2007 Land rover Lr3 problems

The Land Rover LR3, produced from 2005 to 2009, is known for its off-road capabilities and sporty design. However, it has its fair share of problems, which can vary depending on the model year.

One of the most common issues in the Land Rover LR3 is related to the transmission. The 2005-2006 models, in particular, have experienced transmission problems that can cause erratic shifting, excessive vehicle hesitation, and even complete transmission failure. These issues may be linked to various electrical control unit (ECU) complications, and if the transmission is faulty, it may require a total rebuild or replacement, which can cost up to $6,800.

Another significant problem with the Land Rover LR3 is related to the airbag wiring. In some cases, the airbag wiring can sustain damage from the steering wheel and column mechanism, which may cause the airbag to fail to deploy in the event of a collision. This issue can trigger the SUV's SRS warning light, indicating that the airbag requires immediate repair. A recall was issued for this issue, which also included other Land Rover models.

The Land Rover LR3 also has suspension issues, particularly with the vehicle height sensor. If the sensor is defective, it may deactivate the air suspension, causing inconvenience to the driver. Additionally, the exterior door handles and vehicle emblems tend to fade over time, requiring replacement or refurbishment.

The ignition switch and transmission lever in the Land Rover LR3 have also been reported to have issues. In some cases, it is possible to remove the key from the ignition even if the transmission lever hasn't been moved to the park mode previously. This can cause the vehicle to roll away, potentially causing damage to the car and other vehicles on the road. Land Rover issued a recall in 2006 to address this issue for the affected 2005 and 2006 models.

The fuel injectors in the Land Rover LR3 tend to clog and need regular cleaning. This is not a difficult job to do on your own, but it is essential to address this issue promptly to prevent more severe problems with the engine

The front steering tie rods in the Land Rover LR3 are also known to be weak, causing shaking in the steering if they are worn out. This is not a terrible job to do if you are comfortable with handling tools, but it is essential to address this issue promptly to prevent more severe problems with the steering

The front lower control arms in the Land Rover LR3 have issues with the bushings, which tend to fail and cause a popping noise. The recommendation is to replace the entire control arm because the ball joints also tend to fail. This is a more significant procedure, but it is essential to address this issue promptly to prevent more severe problems with the suspension

In summary, the Land Rover LR3 has several common problems that can affect its reliability and performance. These issues include transmission problems, airbag wiring defects, suspension issues, ignition switch and transmission lever problems, fuel injector clogging, and steering and suspension component failures. While these issues can be concerning, many of them can be addressed with regular maintenance and prompt repairs. It is essential to stay informed about these issues and to address them promptly to ensure the safety and reliability of your Land Rover LR3.

SUSPENSION PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-04-29
  • VIN: salag25417a
  • Components: SUSPENSION
  • Summary: As electrical harness issue as described in NHTSA Reference #10056417, the suspension fails and dash reports suspension fault, leading to a suspension that is extremely unstable and could cause vehicle to roll over even at low speeds less than 30 MPH. My safety and the safety of nearby drivers was at risk while driving in a construction area near my home. I had to make an emergency erratic stop, once the suspension started bucking wildly after hitting a minor bump on the street, almost damaging the referenced car as well as those cars around me that were skidding to a stop. Yes, the problem is well documented in the above NHTSA reference and technical bulletin (https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/2014/SB-10056417-1282.pdf) has been published that does not solve the safety issue once the damage has occurred. Not only has it been confirmed by multiple sources, but the manufacturer has published the technical bulletin with recommendations that don't solve the issue; rather, they put a band aid on it, that only helps if you find the issue prior to it occurring. Vehicle state has been well documented by dealer recommended land rover service center. Warning lamps, messages, appeared on dash immediately prior to the unresponsive suspension issue. All previous service and recalls were performed by dealership; however, no recommendation for performing the technical bulletin above was every mentioned which could have feasibly avoided the potentially life threating issue.

Negative 2007 Land rover Lr3 car reviews

  1. Lamont Walter 2024-10-10

There are some things I really appreciate about this car, but unfortunately, there have been some issues that have caused me some frustration. I've had to take it to the dealership several times to address some problems with the lights, seat heaters, and other features, which has been a bit of a hassle. Additionally, the front window molding came off while driving on the highway just three months after I purchased the car. Recently, the car has broken down twice in the last two months, which has been a bit of an inconvenience, especially since it happened while I was on vacation. Currently, the car is at the shop, which is a bit of a distance from my home, so it's hard to say what the issue is. Overall, I think there are some areas where the car could be improved, but I'm hopeful that these issues can be resolved soon.

  2. David Runolfsdottir 2024-09-20

I previously owned a 04 Lincoln Navigator, but it was time for something a little smaller. Before the Lincoln, I had a 1999 Discovery II for 4 years and I must say, the Landrover is just built better. The quality of materials is superior and despite some complaints about quality, I have never had any problems with my Disco and nothing so far with the LR3. Interestingly, my Acura RL was in the shop more than either of these two trucks. I must say, this truck is great with outstanding looks and the dealers are fantastic. They are the best I've ever had, even better than my Mercedes, Acura, Lincoln, and BMW.

  3. Jillian Wilderman 2024-07-16

The GMC Denali was replaced with the LR3, but unfortunately, it has been plagued with numerous issues since the first week of ownership. Despite being located 3 hours away from the dealership, we have had to deal with one problem after another. The Land Rover, while being a more affordable option, is built with the same quality as a luxury car. It is reasonable to expect more features as standard for a vehicle that costs over 50K, such as a navigation system or at least a directional indicator. Due to the poor quality of the LR3, we have decided not to upgrade to the Range Rover Sport as planned. As a mother of three who drives conservatively, it is concerning that we have had to replace the brakes and tires before reaching 20K miles. This is unacceptable for a vehicle that is supposed to be of high quality.

  4. Efren Krajcik 2024-07-03

I noticed that you have had three Land Rovers in the past, and I can understand why you like them. They are spacious and roomy, which is great for avoiding feelings of claustrophobia. However, I would like to suggest that the car may not be the best option for you due to the high gas prices and low fuel efficiency, with only 15 mpg and requiring premium gas. Additionally, some of the features may be a bit difficult to remember how to use, such as folding the second row seats flat. While the third row is comfortable, there may not be as much leg room as expected, and there is limited space for bags when the third row is up. Lastly, only one of the three sunroofs is able to open. I hope this information is helpful to you in making a decision about your next car.

Positive 2007 Land rover Lr3 car reviews

  1. Tyrique Pollich 2024-11-09

The design couldn't be better, and they really thought of all the little details in this thing. I bought it with 45K miles on it, so I'm hoping that anything that would have gone wrong by now has already done so. The company also offers extended warranties, which is great. It's very roomy and perfect for road trips!

  2. Willy Jenkins 2024-10-23

I switched from a Discovery II to the new LR3 and I'll tell you all about it later. I went with the V6 because I didn't think I needed the V8, but it still has excellent equipment and a beautiful, soft ride. It handles just as I expected.

  3. Jamel Daniel 2024-10-04

I'm so glad to hear that you're enjoying your Land Rover! As first-time owners, it's great to hear that you find the reliability and service to be terrific. I understand that the gas mileage can be disappointing due to the large engine and performance, and that some of the off-road gadgets can get in the way. It's true that many of us may not use all of the off-road performance features that the Land Rover offers. Overall, it sounds like you're having a positive experience with your Land Rover!

  4. Santiago Renner 2024-10-03

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I noticed that you were looking for a vehicle in the $40k - $50k price range and did some research on the Toyota Highlander, Buick Enclave, Mazda CX-9 and the Honda Pilot. After comparing them, I found that the LR3 had the most standard amenities and safety features at this price point. It's extremely secure in all driving conditions and handles stop and go traffic with ease, making it perfect for driving in downtown Chicago. The V8 provides sufficient acceleration and the braking is very strong. Additionally, the driving position is unbeatable and the SUV is whisper quiet on the highway. Let me know if you have any questions or if there's anything else I can help you with!

  5. Rosendo Gibson 2024-09-12

I hope you're doing well! I just wanted to let you know that I've been really enjoying this vehicle ever since I got it. It did really well on our trip, especially considering how many people we had riding in it, and it handles like a dream. If you're in the market for a mid-size SUV that still has plenty of cargo space, this is definitely the car to get. The third row seat is also a great feature to have in case you find yourself carrying more passengers than expected. And of course, it handles great off-road too!
