2008 Land rover Lr3 problems

The Land Rover Discovery is a series of seven-seater family SUVs, produced under the Land Rover marque, from the British manufacturer Land Rover, and later Jaguar Land Rover. The series is currently in its fifth iteration (or generation, according to the manufacturer), the first of which was introduced in 1989, making the Discovery the first new model series since the launch of the 1970 Range Rover – on which it was based – and only the third new product line since the conception of the Land Rover (vehicle and brand) by Rover in 1948. The model is sometimes called influential, as one of the first to market a true off-road capable family car.
Although the Range Rover had originally been designed as an everyday four wheel drive car that could be used as both a utility vehicle and a family car, it had progressively moved upmarket through its life to evolve into a luxury vehicle sold at a much higher price point. The Discovery was intended to fulfill the role the Range Rover originally was intended for; a segment which was now dominated by Japanese rivals such as the Nissan Patrol, Mitsubishi Pajero and Toyota Land Cruiser. Although positioned below the Range Rover in the company's line-up, the vehicle was both longer and higher, offered more room in the back, and optionally also more seats. Space utilization became more sophisticated in later iterations, but the series keeps offering seats for seven occupants. Despite originally being sold as an affordable alternative to the Range Rover, the Discovery has also progressively moved upmarket through its successive generations to become a bonafide luxury SUV.
The second Discovery (1998) was called the Series II, and though featuring an extended rear body, was otherwise an updated facelift, which carried on the 100 in (2,540 mm) wheelbase frame and rigid, live front and rear axles of the original Range Rover into 2004.
The third iteration – succeeding the series I and II in 2004 - was either titled the Discovery 3 or simply LR3 (in North America and the Middle East). This was the first all-original design for the Discovery. Although it followed the 2002 third generation Range Rover, also switching to fully independent suspension, it still received a separate, but integrated body and frame (IBF) structure. The fourth iteration, as of 2009 – like the series II, was again mainly an update of the new generation – marketed as the Discovery 4, or Land Rover LR4 for North American and Middle Eastern markets.
The fifth iteration of the Discovery, introduced in 2017, no longer sports a numeric suffix. Unlike the previous two generations, it now benefits from a unitized body structure, making it lighter than its predecessor.

Common 2008 Land rover Lr3 problems
The Land Rover LR3, produced between 2005 and 2009, is known for its off-road capabilities and luxurious design. However, like any vehicle, it has its share of common problems.
- Defective Air Bag Wiring: The LR3's defective air bag wiring can sustain damage from the steering wheel and column mechanism, causing the air bag to fail to deploy in a collision. This issue can trigger the SUV's SRS warning light and may lead to injury. A recall was issued for this problem, which also affected other Land Rover models.
- Suspension Issues: The LR3's suspension issues are often due to a faulty vehicle height sensor, which may deactivate the air suspension. Problems with the tire pressure control module can also contribute to suspension issues.
- Fuel Injectors: The fuel injectors on the LR3's V8 engine are sensitive to clogging. Land Rover has issued a technical service bulletin recommending regular cleaning of these fuel injectors .
- Front Steering Tie Rod Arms: The LR3's front steering tie rod arms are underdesigned and may show significant play at around 40,000-50,000 miles. This issue can be identified by wiggling the wheels and checking for play in the tie rod arms .
- Front Lower Control Arms: The LR3's front lower control arms have large bushings that may fail. The recommended procedure is to replace the entire control arm instead of just the bushings .
- Air Suspension Compressors: The LR3's air suspension compressors can get clogged up with desiccant and fail. The front and rear cross valve blocks may also leak, causing issues with the air suspension system .
- Electrical Issues: The LR3 can experience electrical issues, such as instrument panel CAN bus failures, alternator failures, battery failures, wiring loom failures, mass air flow sensor failures, and injector clogging .
- Coolant Reservoir Float: The LR3's coolant reservoir float can fail, causing the reservoir to crack. This issue can be addressed by replacing the coolant reservoir .
- Rust: The LR3's vehicle frames are prone to accumulating rust, particularly in areas where the sunroof drains fail and water leaks into the passenger footwells .
These common problems should be considered when purchasing a Land Rover LR3. Regular maintenance and inspections can help identify and address these issues before they become serious.
How many miles will a Land Rover LR3 last?
It can last over 200,000 miles if you maintain it regularly and follow its service schedule. Some common issues Land Rover LR3 owners face include suspension issues, instrument cluster problems, and a faulty tire pressure control module.
How many miles can a 2008 Land Rover last?
With detailed maintenance, routine servicing, and good driving habits, a Range Rover can last between 150,000 and 200,000 miles.
What is the most reliable Land Rover engine?
Early incarnations of the TD5 had issues with the oil pump sprocket bolt not being properly secured and failure of the plastic cylinder head dowels, but after the first couple of years of production these problems were ironed out, and the TD5 earned a reputation as one of Land Rover's most reliable motors.
When did they stop making LR3?
Land Rover Discovery 3/LR3
Known as both the Land Rover Discovery and the Land Rover LR3, this model was discontinued in 2009. First produced in 2004, this model was manufactured for five years.

SUSPENSION,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2019-05-17
- VIN: SALAE25458A
- Components: SUSPENSION,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE
- Summary: STATIONARY - ONE OF THE ELECTRONIC CONTROL MODULE IS NOT COMMUNICATING WITH SOME OF THE PARTS. NOT SURE IF THIS IS SOFTWARE UPGRADE REQUIRED OR WHAT THE ISSUE MIGHT BE.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2017-05-01
- VIN: SALAE25478A
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2008 LAND ROVER LR3. WHILE DRIVING VARIOUS SPEEDS, THE "VEHICLE FAULT SYSTEM SHUTTING DOWN" INDICATOR ILLUMINATED AND THE INSTRUMENT PANEL BEGAN TO MALFUNCTION. THE CONTACT STATED THAT SEVERAL CODES COULD BE SEEN USING A DIAGNOSTIC DEVICE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A DEALER (LAND ROVER OF NEW ORLEANS 4032 VETERANS MEMORIAL BLVD METAIRIE, LA, 70002); HOWEVER, THE CAUSE OF THE FAILURE COULD NOT BE DETERMINED. THE MANUFACTURER REFERRED THE CONTACT TO THE LOCAL DEALER. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO VARIOUS INDEPENDENT MECHANICS WHO REFERRED THE CONTACT TO THE LAND ROVER DEALER. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 130,000.
SUSPENSION PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2014-03-11
- VIN: SALAE25448A
- Components: SUSPENSION
- Summary: ON 3/11/14 THE SUSPENSION WARNING LIGHT CAME ON THE DASH. I TOOK IT TO A LOCAL AUTO REPAIR SHOP WHO HAD THE DIAGNOSTIC EQUIPMENT FOR LAND ROVER (THE CLOSEST DEALER IS 3 HRS AWAY). THE DIAGNOSTIC INDICATED THAT THE COMPRESSOR FOR LEVEL CONTROL WAS FAULTY. THE DIAGNOSTIC INDICATED "RECOMMEND COMPRESSOR REPLACEMENT WITH UPDATED COMPRESSOR". THE REPAIR SHIP INDICATED THAT THEY HAVE HAD TO REPLACE SEVERAL OF THESE. I THEN CONTACTED THE DEALER IN JACKSONVILLE TO DETERMINE IF THERE HAD BEEN A RECALL. THEY REPLIED NO THAT THEY ALSO HAVE HAD TO REPLACE THIS WITH THE "UPDATED COMPRESSOR" AS THE ORIGINAL FACTORY INSTALLED ONES HAD A DESIGN FLAW. THE REPLACEMENT PART WAS CHANGED SO THAT THE PROBLEM WOULD NOT OCCUR AGAIN. I THEN CONTACTED LAND ROVER NORTH AMERICAN TO DETERMINE IF THEY WOULD REIMBURSE ME FOR THE REPAIR. THEY REFUSED. I HAD THE COMPRESSOR REPLACED BY MY LOCAL AUTO REPAIR SHOP FOR $1, 200. I DO BELIEVE THIS PROBLEM IS A SAFETY ISSUE AND NOT A NORMAL DEFECT THAT WOULD BE COVERED BY WARRANTY. MY VEHICLE IS OUT OF WARRANTY, BUT THIS SHOULD NOT MAKE A DIFFERENCE FOR A FACTORY INSTALLED DEFECTIVE DESIGNED PART. I WAS TOLD BY THE REPAIR SHOP THAT THE SYSTEM COULD FAIL COMPLETELY WHILE DRIVING , WHICH WOULD THEN BE A SAFETY ISSUE. I NOTICED ANOTHER COMPLAINT HAS BEEN FILED ON NHTSA ID#10564234 WHERE THIS OCCURRED. AS MY 17 YEAR OLD DAUGHTER IS THE MAIN DRIVER OF THIS VEHICLE, I WAS VERY CONCERNED FOR HER SAFETY SHOULD THIS OCCUR WHILE SHE WAS DRIVING. I WOULD HOPE THAT NTSB WILL INVESTIGATE THIS ISSUE AND DETERMINE FROM LAND ROVERS RECORDS, HOW MANY OF THESE HAVE HAD TO BE REPLACED, WHAT THEIR INTERNAL ENGINEERING/QUALITY CONTROL RECORDS SHOW ABOUT THIS DEFECTIVELY DESIGNED PART, AND WHY THEY DID NOT RECALL ALL THE VEHICLES WHICH USED THE ORIGINAL PART THAT WAS LATER CHANGED. *TR
SUSPENSION PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2014-02-03
- Components: SUSPENSION
- Summary: WHILE OPERATING MY LAND ROVER LR3 AT NORMAL HIGHWAY SPEED, APPROXIMATELY 55-65 MPH, THE VEHICLE SUDDENLY LOST ALL POWER TO THE EAS (ELECTRONIC AIR SUSPENSION). WHEN THIS HAPPENED THE VEHICLE LOST ALL PRESSURE IN AIR SYSTEM WHICH MAINTAINED A SAFE RIDE HEIGHT AND STABLE HANDLING. ONCE THE VEHICLE LOWERS ITSELF ONTO THE BUMP STOPS IT IS LITERALLY RIDING ON THE FRAME.I FOLLOWED THE DIRECTION GIVEN BY THE IN-DASH WARNING SYSTEM AND SLOWED THE VEHICLE TO A STOP, TURNED OFF AND RESTARTED THE VEHICLE, AND THE VEHICLE REGAINED IT'S PROPER RIDE HEIGHT MOMENTARILY AND AGAIN LOST PRESSURE TO THE SUSPENSION SYSTEM. THE SAFETY ISSUE AT QUESTION IS IF THIS SHOULD HAPPEN TO A YOUNG OR INEXPERIENCED DRIVER OR THE IN DASH WARNING SYSTEM FAIL SIMULTANEOUSLY AN INDIVIDUAL COULD FIND THEMSELVES IN A VERY DANGEROUS OR POSSIBLY LIFE THREATENING POSITION. IF THE VEHICLE DROPS ONTO THE FRAME IT IS TRAVELING WITHOUT SUSPENSION AND CAN QUICKLY PRODUCE AN OUT OF CONTROL VEHICLE AT A NORMAL RATE OF SPEED ONE COULD EXPECT ON THE NATIONS FREEWAYS. AFTER FURTHER RESEARCH I HAVE LEARNED THIS IS A COMMON OCCURRENCE AND HAS UNTIL NOW BEEN A SAFETY ISSUE SIMPLY OVER LOOKED BY NTSB, I HOPE WITH THIS NOTIFICATION AND CONSUMER CONCERN NTSB WILL TAKE ACTION AND HOLD LAND ROVER ACCOUNTABLE FOR THIS SAFETY ISSUE TRAVELING THE ROADS OF AMERICA TODAY. AN IMMEDIATE RECALL SHOULD BE EXECUTED ON ALL LAND ROVER VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH THE ELECTRONIC AIR SUSPENSION AND REPAIRS/REPLACEMENT SHOULD BE LEVIED ONTO LAND ROVER NORTH AMERICA UNTIL ALL OF THESE VEHICLES HAVE BEEN EFFECTIVELY REPAIRED. FAILURE TO DO SO AT THIS POINT IS CLEARLY IRRESPONSIBLE ON THE BEHALF OF THE NTSB. *TR

FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2009-08-14
- Components: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE
- Summary: DURING HOT SUMMER MONTHS, VEHICLE EMITS VERY STRONG GAS FUMES AFTER DRIVING. IT ONLY HAPPENS IF THERE IS 1/2 TANK OR MORE OF FUEL. THIS HAS HAPPENED AT LEAST A DOZEN TIMES, AND ALSO OCCURRED ON THE THREE-YEAR OLDER MODEL THAT I HAD OF THE SAME VEHICLE. SUPPOSEDLY, THE FUEL SYSTEM WAS RE-DESIGNED FOR THE '08 MODEL, BUT THE SYMPTOMS ARE EXACTLY THE SAME. ACCORDING TO THE SERVICE REP., SHE HAS THREE OTHER CUSTOMERS WITH THE SAME COMPLAINT. THE FUMES CAN GET SO BAD THAT I AM AFRAID TO PARK IT IN MY GARAGE FOR FEAR OF THE WATER HEATER IGNITING THE FUMES. THE FUMES ARE NOTICEABLE IN THE FAMILY ROOM OF MY HOUSE, AS WELL AS THE BEDROOMS ABOVE. IF THE VEHICLE IS OUT SIDE, YOU CAN SMELL GAS FROM TWENTY FEET AWAY. WHEN IN STOP AND GO TRAFFIC, THE FUMES WILL ENTER INTO THE PASSENGER COMPARTMENT. THE DEALER INSPECTED THE VEHICLE AND COULD NOT FIND ANYTHING WRONG. LATER IN THE DAY, AFTER PICKING UP THE VEHICLE, THE GASSING HAPPENED AGAIN. THE VEHICLE WAS RETURNED TO THE DEALER ON 8/17/09 AGAIN TO HAVE THE PROBLEM CORRECTED. THEY TOLD ME THAT THE ONLY WAY THEY COULD FIX WAS IF THEY COULD RE-CREATE THE PROBLEM. THEY HAVE HAD THE VEHICLE FOR FOUR DAYS, DURING TEMPERATURES OF 105 DEGREES OR MORE, AND STILL SAY THAT IT IS NOT EMITTING GAS FUMES. SUPPOSEDLY, THE ENTIRE FUEL SYSTEM HAS BEEN INSPECTED, WITH NO DEFECTS NOTICED. THEY ALSO INFORMED ME THAT SOME OFF-GASSING IS TO BE EXPECTED, SO EVEN IF IT DOES ACT UP, THERE IS MOST LIKELY NOTHING THEY CAN DO ABOUT IT. *TR

I'm so happy with the LR3! I've already driven 4000 miles and enjoyed every single one of them. The ride is really smooth and comfortable, even though the vehicle is a bit heavy. The 4.4 liter V8 performs really well in all normal day to day driving conditions. The stereo and climate interfaces take a bit of studying to fully understand, but overall this vehicle gives its driver an incredible sense of poise and stability, rain or shine - but especially in the rain!

I bought my LR3 HSE a little over a month ago and I absolutely love it! It surpasses my previous H2 in every way. The build quality is excellent and the ride is great, with even better handling. When I slap the selector into sport mode, this puppy hauls like a sports car. And let's not forget about the amazing 550 watt stereo! Plus, I'm getting over 18 MPG which is fantastic. Overall, I couldn't be happier with my purchase.

I'm glad to hear that you're enjoying your LR3 so far! The feeling of security it provides while driving is definitely a plus. The Logic 7 sound system, NAV/GPS, Bluetooth integration, and Voice Command are all great features that make driving more enjoyable. While Voice Command may take some getting used to, it's worth the effort. Command shift is also a great feature that adds to the driving experience. The brakes are impressive for a vehicle of this size and weight, and the precise steering and smooth ride thanks to the air suspension make for a comfortable ride. The LR3's flexibility in seating and cargo configuration is also impressive, and it's great to hear that the kids love it too. I hope you have a fantastic time on your upcoming long trip, and I'm sure you'll continue to enjoy the LR3 more and more as you drive it!

I have a 2008 LR3 HSE and the only issues I've had are with a seatbelt in the back seat and the refrigerator, which have both been replaced and are now working fine. Living in an area where it snows 5-6 months out of the year, the LR3 is a beast in the snow. I love to show up my two friends with Hummers, as they're not even in the same class. This SUV is not just for driving to the mall or grocery store. I absolutely love driving this car and even took a trip to Florida with my two kids, which was great. I expected the gas mileage to be around 21mpg on the highway. The LR3 is built like a tank and makes me walk funny!

I recently purchased a 2008 LR3 with 150,000 miles after looking at several LR3 and LR4 models. I spent about a year researching on car fax and car gurus, but I knew I had to see the car in person before making a decision. During a road trip to an area full of LR3s, I found the one I wanted in a run-down lot. Despite its leaking shocks and other issues, I knew I had to have it. After leaving a few messages, the seller and I arranged a meeting later that evening. He was a nice guy and the LR3 looked pretty good compared to the others I had seen. Although it had a few issues, the seller promised to take care of them. I flew back four weeks later to pick up my LR3, and although it needed a new brake caliper, I was still optimistic about my purchase. After a four-hour drive home, I cleaned it up and took my dad for a ride. Unfortunately, the passenger door wouldn't open and my elderly father was trapped inside. Despite this hiccup, I'm still thrilled with my LR3 purchase!I was impressed by how skillfully a large person could navigate around so many fragile plastic barbs without breaking anything. Even to this day, he refuses to ride in my LR3. Two weeks later, I took it to a service shop and declined the $850 estimate just to open the door. Instead, I stripped the interior door card and passenger seat for full access, and the door miraculously unlocked on its own. The boutique car service establishment took the time to inform me of everything that could possibly be wrong with my beautiful LR3 at the hourly rate of $189/hour, which could have made my $7000 car worth close to $12000. I was amazed by the amount of service information available on YouTube for LR3's, which I assume is due to the demand of so many DIY'ers. I previously kept a BMW e39 running, and now I get to cut my teeth on a Land Rover. Although it's currently just sitting in my carport, I can still start it up and watch the fireworks of strange lights and gyrating tachometer needles doing what they may. It's a Land Rover, and I still love it.

The gas mileage is truly horrible and the front seating is uncomfortable. However, the interior is great and the car looks good. It is important to note that the car experiences massive depreciation. Overall, I would not recommend it.

I noticed that you have had three Land Rovers in the past, and I can understand why you like them. They are spacious and roomy, which is great for avoiding feelings of claustrophobia. However, I would like to suggest that the car may not be the best option for you due to the high gas prices and low fuel efficiency, with only 15 mpg and requiring premium gas. Additionally, some of the features may be a bit difficult to remember how to use, such as folding the second row seats flat. While the third row is comfortable, there may not be as much leg room as expected, and there is limited space for bags when the third row is up. Lastly, only one of the three sunroofs is able to open. I hope this information is helpful to you in making a decision about your next car.

There are some things I really appreciate about this car, but unfortunately, there have been some issues that have caused me some frustration. I have had to take it to the dealership multiple times to address some problems with the lights, seat heaters, and other features (I think it's been 8 times so far). Additionally, the front window molding came off while driving on the highway just 3 months after purchase. Recently, the car has broken down twice in the last two months, both times while we were on vacation, and it only has 25,000 miles on it. Currently, it is at the shop 400 miles away from my home, but I am hopeful that the issue will be resolved soon. Overall, I believe that there is room for improvement in the car's manufacturing process.

I previously owned a 04 Lincoln Navigator, but it was time for something a little smaller. Before the Lincoln, I had a 1999 Discovery II for 4 years and I must say, the Landrover is just built better. The quality of materials is superior and despite some complaints about quality, I have never had any problems with my Disco and nothing so far with the LR3. Interestingly, my Acura RL was in the shop more than either of these two trucks. I must say, this truck is great with outstanding looks and the dealers are fantastic. They are the best I've ever had, even better than my Mercedes, Acura, Lincoln, and BMW.
