2011 Ford Transit connect problems

ford logo

The Ford Transit Connect is a compact panel van sold by Ford since 2002. Developed by Ford of Europe, the model line replaced sedan-based vans (Ford Escort and Ford Courier vans) with a dedicated commercial vehicle platform. The model line is the second-smallest vehicle of the Ford Transit range, slotted between the Ford Transit Courier LAV and the Ford Transit Custom LCV/MPV. In line with other Ford Transit variants, passenger-oriented models (in Europe) are marketed as the Ford Tourneo Connect with side windows and rear seats.

The first and second-generation Transit Connect has been imported to North America from the 2010 model year. To circumvent the 25% "chicken tax" on imported light trucks, all examples have been imported as passenger vans, with cargo vans converted to the intended configuration after their importation. In the region, the Transit Connect does not have a direct predecessor; the closest vehicle to its size was the standard-length Ford Aerostar cargo van, which ceased production in 1997.

The first-generation Transit Connect was assembled by Ford Otosan (Kocaeli, Turkey) along with Ford Romania (Craiova, Romania). For the second generation, Ford of Europe shifted production to its Ford Valencia Body and Assembly facility (Almussafes, Valencia, Spain). For 2022, a third generation of the Tourneo Connect was released; based on the Volkswagen Caddy, the model line is assembled by Volkswagen in Poland.

Common 2011 Ford Transit connect problems

The Ford Transit Connect, a popular work van, has its share of common problems that have been reported by owners of the 2011 model. Here are some of the most frequently mentioned issues and their details:

  • Transmission: Transmission problems can cause slipping and not shifting properly, leading to a check engine light. This issue can be caused by low transmission fluid levels or a faulty transmission. Checking the transmission fluid level and servicing the transmission can help fix this problem.
  • Cooling Fans: Cooling fan failures can lead to engine overheating, resulting in a high temperature gauge reading. The cooling fans should turn on for about two minutes when the engine is running for 45 minutes. If they don't, checking the fuses, module, and coolant temp head (CHT) sensor can help identify the problem.
  • Fuel Injectors: Dirt can accumulate in the fuel injectors, causing them to clog and malfunction. Using good gas and adding a fuel injector cleaner additive can help prevent this issue. However, if the fuel injectors are already clogged, they may need to be replaced, which involves disconnecting the harness, removing the fuel rail, and replacing the injector.

In summary, these are some of the common problems reported by owners of the 2011 Ford Transit Connect. Regular maintenance and checking for these issues can help prevent them and keep the van running smoothly.

I DO NOT THINK THAT I EVER GOT A RECALL NOTICE ABOUT THIS PROBLEM. I AM NOT HAPPY WITH THE DEALER'S EXPLANATION ESPECIALLY IN LIGHT OF THE FACT THAT A RECALL DOES EXIST. *TR

TRACTION CONTROL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2011-03-03
  • VIN: NM0KS9CNXBT
  • Components: TRACTION CONTROL SYSTEM
  • Summary: THE ADVANCETRACK RSC, OR TRACTION CONTROL FEATURE, ON THE 2011 FORD TRANSIT CONNECT CAN NOT BE MANUALLY TURNED OFF. THIS HAS RESULTED IN DANGEROUS SITUATIONS WERE THE CAR BECAME INOPERABLE IN TRAFFIC IN INTERSECTIONS, PULLING INTO TRAFFIC, AND DRIVING UP ANY DEGREE OF INCLINE ON MUDDY OR SNOWY SURFACES.THE VEHICLE WOULD OTHERWISE BE CAPABLE OF PROCEEDING SAFELY AND CAPABLY BY SELECTING A MANUAL SHUT OFF OR ELECTING A MINIMUM SPEED CUT OFF FOR THE PROGRAM FROM A MENU SUCH AS 5-10 MPH. I DRIVE A SUBSTANTIAL DISTANCE YEARLY (60,000+ MILES) IN DIVERS CONDITIONS AND MANY KINDS OF VEHICLES. THIS IS A REAL SAFETY FAILURE IN PRODUCT DESIGN. THE FEATURE CREATES DANGEROUS DRIVING SITUATIONS THAT OTHER VEHICLES DO NOT ENCOUNTER WITH THAT DESIGN. A MANUAL SHUT OFF SHOULD BE A STANDARD SAFETY FEATURE FOR THIS TECHNOLOGY. THIS FEATURE ALSO MAKES THE VEHICLE UNUSABLE IN SOME CIRCUMSTANCES NOT SAFETY RELATED BECAUSE OF ITS DESIGN. THE FUNCTION OF THIS FEATURE HAS PUT ME AND MY BEGINNING DRIVER DAUGHTER IN PERIL IN VARIOUS CIRCUMSTANCES THAT THE DESIGN CREATES A HAZARD FOR. THE ENGINEERS NEED TO TEST THIS DESIGN AT ITS FAIL POINTS AND CONSIDER THE SAFETY AND FUNCTIONALITY CONSEQUENCES (FAILURE). *TR

Hi there! Congratulations on your new van purchase! I hope it serves you well for your small business and family needs. I understand your concerns about the van's performance on steep hills and highways, but it's great to hear that the turning radius and mileage are good. Perhaps with some adjustments, you'll be able to get the most out of your new vehicle. Thanks for sharing your experience with us!

  2. Reggie Kulas 2024-10-18

We use our transit connect for work. I'm concerned about the lack of legroom for backseat passengers, especially when we need to transport more than one person to urgent care. However, the front seat is fairly comfortable, even on longer trips. The visibility is excellent all around, thanks to the huge panoramic front windshield that makes it easy to see pretty much everything.

  3. Zack Corwin 2024-09-22

Hi there! I understand that you've had some trouble with your car. It sounds like you've had to replace the transmission and motor, which can be frustrating. I hope you don't mind me asking, but have you considered taking your car to a trusted mechanic for regular check-ups? It might help prevent future issues. Best of luck with your car!

  4. Roy McLaughlin 2024-08-22

I drive this vehicle for a company for more than 10 hours a day. When I took over the vehicle from another driver, we used to joke about how many fender benders and hits the old driver had in this vehicle. He always said it's hard to see, and unfortunately, I have to agree. Despite having a spotless driving record prior to taking this vehicle, I have had more near misses in this vehicle. Recently, a woman sideswiped me as I merged into her lane, and I just didn't see her because she was in the huge blind spot over my left shoulder. As a professional driver, I always signal, look, and then proceed, but sometimes it's just not enough. The parts department at Ford can be a bit of a challenge, as they don't always carry the parts for the Transit Connects, despite there being so many of them on the road. Additionally, the parts can be quite expensive, which can be frustrating.

  5. Johan Botsford 2024-05-23

No kidding... the door actually fell off the hinges. This truck is a complete lemon and takes more time at the shop than on the road. It seems that every one you see on the road is missing at least one hubcap. Update: We lost the gas cap. Yes, the welded on gas cap fell off along with the antenna. Last Update: I FINALLY GOT RID OF IT!!! I switched to Ram Pro Master City and it’s so much nicer.

Great multi purpose vehicle! It's perfect for the streets of Boston and parks like a sub compact car. I'm so happy with its handling, I was expecting worse. I've even had 5 200 lbs. men on a half hour drive without any complaints. I'm soon to go on a 1500 mile golf trip with 3 men and I can't wait!

Hello! I'm a guy who uses a power wheelchair and happens to be 6'2

  3. Henri Hill 2024-10-19

This van handles better than expected, with a smooth ride and great visibility from the front windshield and side windows. It also has a tight turning radius. I've only had it for a week, but everything is within reach and the overhead storage is awesome. It's everything they said it would be. And don't believe what they say about the power - this vehicle has plenty of power as far as I'm concerned!

  4. Kody Rodriguez 2024-10-05

I recently purchased a 2010 Transit Connect XLT and I absolutely love it! It has been a great vehicle for my handicapped husband. He can easily enter it because it is low to the ground, and then I put his wheelchair in the back and off we go. The head room and space in the back are amazing, and having the second row of seats is a nice bonus - just fold them down and there is even more space. It always catches people's attention and they love it too. Plus, the gas mileage is great at 25 mpg around town. The big open windshield, side glass, and rear glass in the back doors (which swing out of the way) are excellent features. I truly believe that this is a fantastic family vehicle. I love it, and I hope others will too!

  5. Orval O'Hara 2024-09-16

We absolutely loved our 1999 Windstar, but after driving it for 400,000 miles, it was time to let it go. The Transit Connect was the perfect replacement for us since it fits perfectly in our garage. We've put over 80,000 miles on it and, apart from the usual wear and tear (tires, brakes, and oil), we've only had a few minor issues. One of these was with the tpm system, which works fine until we rotate the tires. When the rear tires are switched to the front, the light comes on and the system needs to be reset. We also had to replace the driver side window motor, which cost around $400.00 with labor (the van was out of warranty). The most noticeable issue we've had is the lack of power. It's important to remember that this van only has a Focus engine, but it's bigger and heavier. It's great for driving around town and at speeds up to 60 mph, which is what it was designed for. It's also fine on the highway, but it can be noisy and ride like a truck (which it really is) and struggles with long uphill grades. Despite these minor issues, we've driven our van all over the country and we're happy with it so far.
