The Mazda Navajo is a mid-size SUV manufactured by Ford Motor Company for the Japanese automaker Mazda, and is a rebadged version of the first generation Ford Explorer. It was Mazda's first SUV, and was offered with a choice of rear-wheel drive or four-wheel drive.

The Navajo won the 1991 Motor Trend Truck of the Year award, but because of its Explorer origins, its reputation deteriorated amid the Firestone and Ford tire controversy.

Differences

The Navajo featured a few minor changes from the Explorer it was based on. It got a revised front fascia, new taillamps and wheels, and the bumpers were painted dark gray (resulting in the deletion of all chrome trim). The interior was largely shared between the two model lines, with the Navajo receiving its own lettering for the instrument panel (in line with other Mazda vehicles), and Mazda lettering was added to the Ford steering wheel hub.

  • Summary: THE PARKING BRAKE CONTROL SELF-ADJUST PAWL DOES NOT LINE UP PROPERLY WITH THE SELF-ADJUST RACHET CAUSING THE PAWL TO SLIP OVER ONE OR MORE TEETH IN THE RACHET.
  • Consequence: WHEN THE ABOVE OCCURS, IT CAN RESULT IN PARKING BRAKE SYSTEM INEFFECTIVENESS. THE PARKING BRAKE WILL NOT HOLD THE VEHICLE, CAUSING THE VEHICLE TO ROLL FREELY, IF THE TRANSMISSION IS NOT LEFT IN GEAR.
  • Remedy: A WEDGE WILL BE INSTALLED WHICH WILL SERVE TO LOCK THE PARKING BRAKE SELF-ADJUST MECHANISM PAWL INTO ENGAGEMENT WITH THE RACHET. ALSO, OWNERS WILL BE ADVISED TO RELEASE AND REAPPLY THE PARKING BRAKE WHENEVER TOOTH SKIP OCCURS AND WILL BE REMINDED TO ALWAYS TURN OFF THE ENGINE AND LEAVE THE VEHICLE IN GEAR WHEN THE VEHICLE IS PARKED.

    It sounds like you have a great truck! Even with 230,000 miles on it, it's still going strong. Although it has had a few issues, like the 4WD not working and the armrest breaking, it's impressive that the engine still has most of its original performance. Overall, it seems like a reliable and trustworthy vehicle.

    I purchased a used 91 LX in 1998 and unfortunately, it turned out to be a terrible car experience. It left me stranded so many times that I started calling it the paycheck eater. It was a total lemon and I felt relieved when I finally traded it in. I hope it was disposed of properly. Due to this experience, I have decided not to go with Mazda again.

    Hi there! I just wanted to share a quick story about my 1992 Navajo LX 4WD. I owned it until 1999 when I was rear-ended on the Belt Parkway in Queens, NY. Believe it or not, there wasn't a scratch on my car! I think it's because of the solid rear bumper. Unfortunately, the other driver's car was totaled and they left the scene. My Navajo was a champ though, it got me through some pretty intense 2 ft snowstorms upstate with no problem.

    I hope you're doing well! I just wanted to share my experience with this vehicle. I purchased it with 120000 miles and have since driven an additional 25000 miles. So far, it hasn't burned any oil, which is great news! Additionally, I've been able to haul my 22ft cabin cruiser boat, which is 500lbs above the towing capacity, with ease.     Hello! I just wanted to mention that the Navajo and the Ford Explorer are very similar cars. Interestingly, the Explorer has a Consumer rating of 8.3 on Edmunds, while the Navajo has a rating of 6.6. Despite this, they are essentially the same car, with only a Mazda insignia distinguishing the Navajo. I recently had a tuneup and added some Slick50 to my Navajo, and it's running great, even with 146,000 miles on it!

    You have a fantastic truck! It has fast acceleration and stops quickly with very little lockup. It's also a great 4x4 in the snow. I noticed that you converted to manual locking hubs since the automatic ones weren't working well. You also get great highway gas mileage - you were able to go from Worcester MA to Portland Maine and back with just half a tank of gas! Your truck starts up every time, even in the coldest of weather (-20 F), and the heat blows nice and hot. Overall, it sounds like you have a great truck that serves you well.
