AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2018-05-19
  • VIN: 9BWDD61J114
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: THE CAR, A 2001 VW GTI 1.8T, WAS BEING DRIVEN AT LOW (RESIDENTIAL STREET -- 25 MPH OR LESS) SPEEDS AND MADE A RIGHT TURN. THE RIGHT REAR WHEEL PROBABLY GRAZED THE CURB, OR POSSIBLY HIT A POTHOLE. THE PASSENGER SIDE AIRBAG AND SIDE CURTAIN AIRBAG DEPLOYED. THE CAR LOST POWER, POSSIBLY DUE TO THE ENGINE STALLING (IT'S A MANUAL) THOUGH THAT'S NOT CERTAIN. THE DEALER SERVICE DEPARTMENT INSPECTED THE CAR AND THEY CONFIRM THERE IS NO DAMAGE OTHER THAN THE (SUBSTANTIAL!) DAMAGE OF THE AIRBAG DEPLOYMENT. FORTUNATELY THERE WAS NOBODY IN THE PASSENGER SEAT AND TRAFFIC WAS MINIMAL SO NO ONE WAS INJURED. IT SEEMS AS THOUGH A CURB OR POTHOLE HIT SHOULD NOT HAVE BEEN ENOUGH TO CAUSE AIRBAG DEPLOYMENT. THE CAR HAS VERY LOW MILEAGE, LESS THAN 60,000, AND HAS BEEN WELL-MAINTAINED.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2007-04-23
  • Fire: 1
  • VIN: 9BWDD61JX14
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: ON THE MORNING OF 27 APRIL 2007, I STARTED MY 2001 VOLKSWAGEN GTI 1.8T. THE VEHICLE WAS IDLING VERY ROUGH AND DID NOT SOUND NORMAL. I THOUGHT THAT IT WAS BECAUSE THE VEHICLE WAS COLD. AT THIS POINT IT BACKED OUT OF MY DRIVEWAY AND DROVE DOWN THE ROAD. APPROXIMATELY A MILE OR TWO DOWN THE ROAD I CAME TO A STOP SIGN AND AFTER STOPPING AND THEN PROCEEDING THROUGH THE INTERSECTION MY VEHICLE SEEMED LIKE IT HAD LITTLE OR NO POWER TO THE ENGINE. AT THIS POINT MY CHECK ENGINE LIGHT STARTED FLASHING SO I IMMEDIATELY PULLED OF TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AND SHUT OFF MY ENGINE. I THEN OPENED MY HOOD AND SMOKE POURED OUT OF THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT. AT THIS POINT I CHECKED MY OIL TO SEE IT IT SMELT BURNT WHICH IT DID NOT. I THEN CHECKED MY COOLANT LEVEL AND IT WAS FULL AND WASN'T EVEN WARM. I THEN HAD MY VEHICLE TOWED TO MY MECHANIC AND HE DIAGNOSED MY VEHICLE AND TOLD ME THAT 1 OF THE 4 COILS IN MY ENGINE HAD STOPPED WORKING AND HAD CAUGHT ON FIRE AND THAT'S WHAT HAD CAUSED THE SMOKE AND THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT. HE ALSO SAID THE ALL FOUR NEED TO BE REPLACED OR THIS COULD HAPPEN AGAIN. AT THIS POINT ALL FOUR COILS WERE REPLACED AND THE OLD ONES WERE GIVEN TO ME TO KEEP AS PROOF THAT THE PARTS WERE DEFECTIVE. *JB

I'VE BEEN ABOUT 15 TIMES TO THE DEALER FOR DIFFERENT PROBLEMS THAT WERE ALL MINOR. AND 10 MONTHS AGO, I LEFT THE CAR AT THE GARAGE FOR 3 DAYS ASKING THEM TO MAKE A FULL REVISION OF THAT CAR BECAUSE I WAS UPSET BY ALL THESE PROBLEMS. YESTERDAY, I WAS DRIVING WHEN SUDDENLY AND WITHOUT ANY PREVIOUS SIGNS, THE BRAKE PEDAL BECAME VERY HARD, I LOST BRAKING, THE ASR (TRACTION CONTROL) SIGNAL WENT ON, AND I COULDN'T STOP THE CAR. HOPEFULLY FOR ME, I WAS ONLY AT 40 MPH, I PUT THE GEAR SHIFT IN NEUTRAL (BECAUSE THE CAR WAS TRYING TO ACCELERATE), AND I PULLED THE HAND BRAKE. I WAS ABLE TO STOP ON A PARKING ON THE SIDE WITHOUT HITTING ANYBODY OR ANY CAR. I WAS VERY LUCKY NOT TO HAVE PANICKED. IT IS A MAJOR SAFETY ISSUE AND I WROTE TO VW USA TO EXPLAIN MY MAJOR CONCERN. *JB

Negative 2001 Volkswagen Gti car reviews

  1. Nikko Blick 2024-10-06

I really like this car, but unfortunately, I have had some issues with it over the past two years. The windows have fallen down into the doors five times, and various plastic pieces inside keep falling off or breaking. Additionally, the headlights suddenly stopped working, and the tail lights have had problems. While my dealer has been helpful in fixing most of these problems without charge, Volkswagen has been uncooperative on the customer service phone and has not yet acknowledged the window issue. Despite these setbacks, the car is still a blast to drive. However, I do question the overall quality of some of the design, and I believe that Volkswagen should take responsibility for the window problem and issue a recall.

  2. Eliseo Hessel 2024-09-19

My ignition coil failed at 49,000 miles. Although my engine was not included in the recall, I believe that this is unacceptable. Despite my disappointment with the customer service, I am confident that I can find a solution to this issue. The power windows have failed 4 times, but I am pleased that the warranty was extended. While the car has not worn as well as I had hoped, I am confident that it still has value and I will be able to sell it.

Positive 2001 Volkswagen Gti car reviews

  1. Arthur Bradtke 2024-11-24

I bought this car for less than $20,000 three years ago and it still runs great! The power during the test drive convinced me to make the purchase. The solid feel of a German car puts my old Honda to shame. It's like coming home to an old friend since my first car was a VW Bug in 1972. The only issue I've had is the engine light sometimes comes on in cooler weather, but it's likely due to an ignition coil factory recall. My only real complaint is that I need to be quick with the clutch when the light turns green to keep up with the automatic transmissions.

  2. Arnaldo Hettinger 2024-10-24

Great car! It has an extremely solid build and attention to detail. I love the practicality of the hatchback and the performance of the silky smooth VR6 engine. I'm happy to report that I haven't had any problems with it over the last year.

  3. August Grady 2024-10-19

I am very satisfied with the car and the service provided. Although there were some issues such as a coolant system leak and a faulty power window regulator, they were promptly repaired under warranty. Additionally, I would like to request the 2002 180hp engine software to further enhance my driving experience.

  4. Adonis Collins 2024-10-12

Your GTI sounds like an amazing car to drive! It's been almost 2 years and you still enjoy driving it every day. Did you know that the 1.8t engine is the same one found in the Audi TT, A4, and A3? That's pretty impressive! It has a lot of low end torque and high end horsepower, which must make for a thrilling ride. And if you're looking for even more power, an aftermarket chipping program can turn it into a 210hp 240tq mini monster. The handling is already pretty good, but with an aftermarket suspension, it can be greatly improved. Sounds like you've got a great car on your hands!

  5. Danny Runolfsson 2024-10-02

I went to VW after giving up on GM. The GTI moves quickly and handles beautifully. It's surprisingly roomy for a compact 3-door, with unbelievably cargo carrying capacity. The interior is very comfortable and remarkably upscale for the price. However, there have been some minor build quality issues, nothing related in any way to driveability. It would be great if VW could seriously address these in the future. Also, it would be wonderful if VWoA could seriously improve its customer service and dealership network. Thank you for considering my feedback!
