The Land Rover Discovery is a series of seven-seater family SUVs, produced under the Land Rover marque, from the British manufacturer Land Rover, and later Jaguar Land Rover. The series is currently in its fifth iteration (or generation, according to the manufacturer), the first of which was introduced in 1989, making the Discovery the first new model series since the launch of the 1970 Range Rover – on which it was based – and only the third new product line since the conception of the Land Rover (vehicle and brand) by Rover in 1948. The model is sometimes called influential, as one of the first to market a true off-road capable family car.

Although the Range Rover had originally been designed as an everyday four wheel drive car that could be used as both a utility vehicle and a family car, it had progressively moved upmarket through its life to evolve into a luxury vehicle sold at a much higher price point. The Discovery was intended to fulfill the role the Range Rover originally was intended for; a segment which was now dominated by Japanese rivals such as the Nissan Patrol, Mitsubishi Pajero and Toyota Land Cruiser. Although positioned below the Range Rover in the company's line-up, the vehicle was both longer and higher, offered more room in the back, and optionally also more seats. Space utilization became more sophisticated in later iterations, but the series keeps offering seats for seven occupants. Despite originally being sold as an affordable alternative to the Range Rover, the Discovery has also progressively moved upmarket through its successive generations to become a bonafide luxury SUV.

The second Discovery (1998) was called the Series II, and though featuring an extended rear body, was otherwise an updated facelift, which carried on the 100 in (2,540 mm) wheelbase frame and rigid, live front and rear axles of the original Range Rover into 2004.

The third iteration – succeeding the series I and II in 2004 - was either titled the Discovery 3 or simply LR3 (in North America and the Middle East). This was the first all-original design for the Discovery. Although it followed the 2002 third generation Range Rover, also switching to fully independent suspension, it still received a separate, but integrated body and frame (IBF) structure. The fourth iteration, as of 2009 – like the series II, was again mainly an update of the new generation – marketed as the Discovery 4, or Land Rover LR4 for North American and Middle Eastern markets.

The fifth iteration of the Discovery, introduced in 2017, no longer sports a numeric suffix. Unlike the previous two generations, it now benefits from a unitized body structure, making it lighter than its predecessor.

Common Land rover Lr3 problems

The Land Rover LR3, also known as the Discovery 3, is a popular SUV known for its durability and longevity, but like any vehicle, it has its share of common problems. Here are some of the most frequently reported issues based on complaints from LR3 owners:

  1. Airbag-related problems: A common issue in the LR3 is a malfunctioning airbag module, which can be caused by a fractured airbag wire. This can affect the operation of the airbag module, potentially causing the airbag light to turn on and affecting the safety of the vehicle in case of an emergency.
  2. Transmission lever issue: There have been reports of a problem with the ignition switch and the transmission lever, which can make it possible to remove the key from the ignition even if the transmission lever hasn't been moved to the park mode. This can cause the vehicle to roll away, potentially causing damage to the vehicle and other cars.
  3. Air suspension height issues: The LR3's air suspension system can have issues with height control, which can affect the vehicle's ground clearance and handling. This can be caused by problems with the air suspension compressor or the air suspension height sensors.
  4. Fuel pump issues: The LR3's fuel pump can have issues with loose terminals on the fuel sending unit, which can cause the fuel pump to malfunction.
  5. Remote door lock issues: The LR3's remote door lock system can have issues with the wiring, which can be caused by water leaking into the floor channel and affecting the wiring.
  6. Engine overheating: The LR3's engine can overheat due to problems with the water pump or the thermostat, which can cause internal damage to the engine.
  7. Dashboard cracking: The LR3's dashboard can crack over time, which can be expensive to replace.
  8. Front steering tie rod issues: The LR3's front steering tie rods can be weak and wear out over time, causing shaking in the steering.
  9. Front lower control arm issues: The LR3's front lower control arms can have issues with the bushings, which can cause a popping noise and require replacement of the entire control arm.
  10. Air suspension compressor clogging: The LR3's air suspension compressors can become clogged with desiccant and fail, which can affect the vehicle's air suspension system.
  11. Wheel alignment issues: The LR3's wheel alignment can be difficult to correct, requiring hours of labor.
  12. Instrument Panel CAN bus failures: The LR3's instrument panel CAN bus can fail, causing vehicle systems to shut down into limp home mode.
  13. Alternator failures: The LR3's alternator can fail, causing battery failures and wiring loom failures.
  14. Mass Air Flow Sensor failures: The LR3's Mass Air Flow Sensor can fail, causing issues with the vehicle's engine.
  15. Coolant reservoir float failures: The LR3's coolant reservoir float can fail, causing the coolant reservoir to crack.
  16. Rust: The LR3's frame can accumulate rust, particularly in areas where the vehicle is exposed to salt and moisture.
  17. Sunroof drain failures: The LR3's sunroof drains can fail, causing water to leak into the passenger footwells.

While these issues can be frustrating for LR3 owners, many of them can be addressed with regular maintenance and repairs. It's important for LR3 owners to stay on top of these issues and address them promptly to ensure the longevity and safety of their vehicle.

Are Land Rover lr3s reliable?

The Land Rover LR3 scored 2.5 out of 5.0 on RepairPal's reliability rating. It can last over 200,000 miles if you maintain it regularly and follow its service schedule. Some common issues Land Rover LR3 owners face include suspension issues, instrument cluster problems, and a faulty tire pressure control module.

What is the most reliable Land Rover engine?

Early incarnations of the TD5 had issues with the oil pump sprocket bolt not being properly secured and failure of the plastic cylinder head dowels, but after the first couple of years of production these problems were ironed out, and the TD5 earned a reputation as one of Land Rover's most reliable motors.

What Land Rover has the least problems?

Which are the most reliable Range Rover cars? The Range Rover stable consists of only four models: the Land Rover Range Rover, the Range Rover Sport, the Range Rover Velar, and the Range Rover Evoque. Of the four, the Velar and Sport are typically the most reliable.

How many miles can a Land Rover engine last?

For example, with diligent care, Range Rovers can endure anywhere from 150,000 to 200,000 miles. Another aspect impacting a Range Rover's durability is its production year. More recent models may showcase advanced technology and features, yet they could also be prone to mechanical complications.

Land rover Lr3 2007
  • Date Of Incident: 2022-04-29
  • Date Complaint: 2022-05-26
  • VIN: salag25417a
  • Components: SUSPENSION
  • Summary: As electrical harness issue as described in NHTSA Reference #10056417, the suspension fails and dash reports suspension fault, leading to a suspension that is extremely unstable and could cause vehicle to roll over even at low speeds less than 30 MPH. My safety and the safety of nearby drivers was at risk while driving in a construction area near my home. I had to make an emergency erratic stop, once the suspension started bucking wildly after hitting a minor bump on the street, almost damaging the referenced car as well as those cars around me that were skidding to a stop. Yes, the problem is well documented in the above NHTSA reference and technical bulletin (https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/2014/SB-10056417-1282.pdf) has been published that does not solve the safety issue once the damage has occurred. Not only has it been confirmed by multiple sources, but the manufacturer has published the technical bulletin with recommendations that don't solve the issue; rather, they put a band aid on it, that only helps if you find the issue prior to it occurring. Vehicle state has been well documented by dealer recommended land rover service center. Warning lamps, messages, appeared on dash immediately prior to the unresponsive suspension issue. All previous service and recalls were performed by dealership; however, no recommendation for performing the technical bulletin above was every mentioned which could have feasibly avoided the potentially life threating issue.

  • Date Of Incident: 2019-11-20
  • Date Complaint: 2019-11-21
  • VIN: SALAA25455A
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: SINCE PURCHASING MY SECOND HAND 2005 LAND ROVER LR3 IN 2013, I HAVE HAD PROBLEMS WITH THE FUEL SYSTEM. I EXPERIENCE DRIVABILITY CONCERNS SUCH AS HESITATION, MISFIRE, STALLING, ROUGH RUNNING, AND DIFFICULTY IN STARTING, AND THE 'CHECK ENGINE' LIGHT IS ALMOST ALWAYS ILLUMINATED. I HAVE BEEN CONCERNED ABOUT THESE ISSUES, AND HAVE SPENT A LOT OF MONEY CHASING THE PROBLEM BY REPLACING EQUIPMENT AND SPENDING A LOT OF TIME IN DOING SO. THE IDENTIFICATION OF THIS ISSUE BEING A RECALL ISSUE FOR 17263 OTHER LAND ROVERS LR3 (NHTSA RECALL CAMPAIGN ID 05V376000) NOT DISCOVERED UNTIL I WAS RESEARCHING THE VALUE OF MY VEHICLE IN ORDER TO SELL IT. WHILE ON THE KELLY BLUE BOOK WEBSITE, I WAS ALERTED THERE WERE 2 RECALLS FOR 2005 LAND ROVER LR3. AFTER READING THE FIRST RECALL DESCRIPTION, I REALIZED THAT I HAVE HAD THE IDENTICAL ISSUES WITH MY VEHICLE. HOWEVER, AFTER INPUTTING MY VEHICLE IDENTIFICATION NUMBER, THE SITE STATED THAT MY VEHICLE VIN WAS NOT ASSOCIATED WITH THE RECALL. I FOUND THIS TO BE VERY DISCONCERTING, AS I HAVE THE IDENTICAL ISSUE. I THEN CALLED LAND ROVER TO SPEAK DIRECTLY TO THE MANUFACTURER. I WAS TOLD THAT MY VEHICLE WAS NO LONGER UNDER WARRANTY. I STATED THAT SAFETY RECALLS WERE NOT ASSOCIATED WITH WARRANTIES. I WAS THEN ASKED FOR, AND PROVIDED MY VIN. THE REPRESENTATIVE STATED THAT MY VEHICLE WAS NOT COVERED UNDER THE RECALL AND I HAD NO RECOURSE. I ASKED HIM, GIVEN THAT OVER 17,000 2005 LAND ROVER LR3 HAD BEEN RECALLED DUE TO THE EXACT SAME ISSUE, WHAT WERE THE ODDS OF MINE HAVING THE SAME PIECE OF FAULTY EQUIPMENT. HE AGAIN STATED THAT SINCE MY VIN WAS NOT LISTED, IT WAS NOT COVERED BY THE RECALL, AND I HAVE NO RECOURSE. HE THEN DISMISSED ME AND HUNG UP. MY WIFE HAD THE STALL ISSUE OCCUR THIS MORNING ON HER DRIVE TO WORK AT 06:30 AM!

I appreciate the reviewer's honest feedback about the car's safety and comfort. However, it seems that there were some issues with the car's features such as the tire pressure gauge, brakes, and sunroof. It's understandable that these issues can be frustrating. Additionally, the reviewer found the car's design to be lacking in terms of ergonomics and navigation. It's important to note that everyone has different preferences when it comes to car features. Thank you for sharing your experience with us!

I recently had to say goodbye to my LR3 after almost 18 months of ownership. While I still adored the style and comfort of the vehicle, its reliability issues ultimately became too much to handle. During my time with it, I had to fix a suspension air compressor ($1,200), a broken glovebox door ($250), broken keyless entry ($250), and rocker panel trim that fell off bi-annually. When I traded it in, it had a faulty HDC control, broken passenger door lock, and worst of all, a bad bearing in the front axle - all between 47,000-62,000 miles. On the plus side, it had good power, decent mileage for a V8 SUV (17+/-), real off-road ability, uniqueness, and was just the right size for my family. While I would consider owning one again, it would have to be under warranty!

Hello! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with the SUV I leased back in April 06. Overall, it's a very capable and comfortable vehicle. However, I did notice that the rear tires tend to wear out quite quickly. Unfortunately, I wasn't made aware of the TSB on the tires until after I had already gone through my first set at around 15K. I'm now on my second set of $1000 tires, and they're already going bald in the back at 34K. As you can imagine, it's quite expensive to replace the tires every year. I've also heard that this is not an isolated issue, as there is a class action lawsuit against LR. Have you experienced anything similar? Thank you for your time and have a great day!

The gas mileage is truly horrible and the front seating is uncomfortable. However, the interior is great and the car looks good. It is important to note that the car experiences massive depreciation. Overall, I would not recommend it.

I have always been a fan of the LR3 and have owned a Range Rover in the past. Recently, I decided to trade my Mercedes for a 2006 LR3SE V8. Unfortunately, I have been experiencing some issues with the sunroof leaking, which has been a bit frustrating. Despite multiple trips to the shop, the problem still persists. I am hoping to resolve this issue through the Lemon Law process. Overall, I still appreciate the LR3 and my past experiences with Range Rover, but this particular situation has been a bit disappointing.

I'm so happy with the LR3! I've already driven 4000 miles and enjoyed every single one of them. The ride is really smooth and comfortable, even though the vehicle is a bit heavy. The 4.4 liter V8 performs really well in all normal day to day driving conditions. The stereo and climate interfaces take a bit of studying to fully understand, but overall this vehicle gives its driver an incredible sense of poise and stability, rain or shine - but especially in the rain!

The experience has been fantastic! These are the best-built vehicles in the world. I live in Maryland and since I've had my vehicle, I pray for snow.

If you're considering a Land Rover, you're probably either familiar with the brand or, like me, a fan of the show Top Gear (BBC version) and have grown to love them because of how fond the presenters seem of the brand. I'm thrilled with my LR3! It lives up to all expectations, with a commanding driving position and fantastic view from any seat. The windows are quite large and allow you to look out and down since they go lower than most vehicles. Even tall passengers will have plenty of headroom and won't have to recline the seat to avoid hitting their head. For a 6000 pound vehicle, it drives more like a normal sedan. The brakes are very strong (I can't even compare them to my old Xterra, the LR3 is in another league), and the 4.4L Jaguar engine is powerful and always seems to have a little more power when you need it. The front and second-row seats are large and comfortable, and the fold-flat third-row seats are probably the best third-row seats out there. An adult can use them, and they're not bad... I would compare them to a compact car back seat. The only downside is that repair costs are high, and parts can be costly too. Fuel consumption is what's to be expected for a vehicle of this weight, and I'm only averaging 9-10 mpg with city driving (we only drive 5 miles a day on average with this). I did a little highway driving and got about 13 mpg. That being said, I honestly don't care about the fuel consumption because I love this vehicle so much that it's completely worth the added fuel cost. The security and safety for my family is worth it.

To check if the air suspension pump has ever been replaced, you may want to consider the cost of the pump alone, installation, and software which can put you back $1500 - $2000. I have owned my LR3 for 6 years and it has been an awesome experience. This is a very solid truck that can handle any obstacle in its way. If it can't go over the hill, it will flatten it. The LR3 has great cargo room and is the best family car hands down. I highly recommend opting for the HSE as it comes with great features such as the stereo, climate controls, fridge, heated front windshield, and 3rd row, which are worth every penny. I would buy another LR3 in a heartbeat.

I'm glad to hear that you're enjoying your LR3 so far! The feeling of security it provides while driving is definitely a plus. The Logic 7 sound system, NAV/GPS, Bluetooth integration, and Voice Command are all great features that make driving more enjoyable. While Voice Command may take some getting used to, it's worth the effort. Command shift is also a great feature that adds to the driving experience. The brakes are impressive for a vehicle of this size and weight, and the precise steering and smooth ride thanks to the air suspension make for a comfortable ride. The LR3's flexibility in seating and cargo configuration is also impressive, and it's great to hear that the kids love it too. I hope you have a fantastic time on your upcoming long trip, and I'm sure you'll continue to enjoy the LR3 more and more as you drive it!
