The Kia Carnival (Korean: 기아 카니발) is a minivan manufactured by Kia since 1998. It was marketed globally under various nameplates, prominently as the Kia Sedona.

The first generation Carnival was introduced in January 1998, and was marketed in a single, short wheelbase version. Second generation models were marketed (2006–2014) in short and long wheelbase variants. A rebadged variant of the second generation was offered in North America as the Hyundai Entourage (2007–2009). Beginning in 2010, the second generation model received updated equipment, including Kia's corporate Tiger Nose grille, as introduced by its then new design chief, Peter Schreyer. Kia introduced its third generation minivan in 2014, solely in a long wheelbase format. The fourth generation was introduced in 2020, when Kia also began using the Carnival nameplate worldwide.

First generation (KV-II; 1998)

The first generation model was manufactured and marketed differently for specific regions, including under a joint venture in the Chinese market with Dongfeng Yueda Kia, as well as the Naza Ria in Malaysia.

In Indonesia and the Philippines, both Carnival/Sedona names were used. Initially introduced as the Carnival in 2001, from 2003 onwards, it was renamed as the Sedona.

Common Kia Sedona problems

The Kia Sedona is a popular minivan that has been on the market for over two decades. While most Sedonas are known for their reliability and ability to last up to 250,000 miles with general maintenance, there are certain model years and common problems that owners should be aware of.

One of the most problematic model years for the Sedona is 2016, which is the only model year from the third generation to make the list of years to avoid. The 2016 Sedona has been plagued with electrical concerns, including blinkers that react with the wrong rear light and headlights that abruptly go off, significantly increasing the likelihood of a nighttime collision. Additionally, the 2016 Sedona has been known for expensive repair costs, making it not worth the money.

Another problematic model year for the Sedona is 2002, which was subjected to a slew of safety recalls immediately after its launch. The 2002 Sedona has been known for awkward handling, an underpowered engine, and faulty seat belts that were unable to offer effective restraint in the event of a collision. The most recent recall was issued in 2005 to repair wires that touched the metal beneath the front seats, causing occasional flames.

The 2012 Sedona was infamous for a low roof strength rating and safety concerns if the vehicle was to overturn. Additionally, the construction and safety rating for the vehicle cage only received a "satisfactory" grade. The 2012 model year has also been known for electrical wiring issues from soy-based material, which attracted animals to the undercarriage causing damage to the electrical system.

Common problems with the Sedona include trouble starting the engine, noisy AC, engine misfire, non-functioning gears, malfunctioning turn signals, noisy braking, leaking power steering pipes, air conditioning problems, poor engine idling, and fuel pump failure. These problems can be caused by a faulty switch in the selector lever, uneven brake callipers, leaking power steering pipes, a faulty condenser, a faulty throttle position sensor, and a defective vehicle immobiliser control module.

To fix these problems, owners can replace the switch, selector lever, brake system, power steering pipes, condenser, throttle position sensor, and vehicle immobiliser control module. These parts can be found on BreakerYard.com, where there are also tutorial videos available online to help with the installation process.

In conclusion, while the Kia Sedona is known for its reliability, there are certain model years and common problems that owners should be aware of. By being informed and taking the necessary steps to address these issues, Sedona owners can ensure that their minivans are safe, reliable, and running smoothly.

  • Date Complaint: 2024-10-21
  • VIN: KNDMB5C19H6
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: My engine seized. When I took it to my mechanic they stated it was due to low compression and that Kia engines were known for this issue. He suggested I take it to a Kia dealer to have them replace the engine. I took it and I was denied the replacement. I did some research and found that this issue was in fact very popular among Kia owners. Some expressing their engines actually ignited. I also found there was a class-action lawsuit against Kia for this exact issue. I noticed all Kia models were included in the suit except for the Sedona. During my research I found a mass of Sedona owners who had the same compression issues. It baffles me why my car wasn't included when it has the exact isdues as the other models made by the same manufacturer. I would like to file a complaint in hopes that other Sedona owners have done the same, and we can bring light to this issue, and possibly a solution.

  • VIN: KNDMB5C10K6
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: On [XXX] at [XXX] the following incident happen with my 2019 KIA Sedona. The ABS and Traction Control Warning lights came ON when I applied the brakes when approaching a 4 way stop sign intersection, I heard a loud grinding sound from the back of the Sedona. The Sedona took longer to come to a stop, a full vehicle length past the stop bar. I was put at risk by the Sedona being in the intersection, instead of stopping at the stop bar. After clearing the intersection, I pulled over the Sedona, turned it off and then restarted it. Both the ABS and Traction Control Lights came back ON. I called the Jackson Kia Dealer in Cocoa Florida and got an answering machine for the service department. I left a message letting them know about the alarm lights and that I had already has at least 2 ABS modules replaced. I asked for an appointment as soon as possible to fix the problem. I had been told previously by KIA that it was safe to drive, but that I would have manual brakes in the rear and to apply breaks earlier, plus get the Sedona in for repair at the next opportunity for an appointment. As of yet the dealership has not seen the Sedona to diagnose the exact problem and cause. This is when these systems first appeared, and I had no other indications of a problem. Further inspection by the dealership confirmed there was no visible oil leak and was followed by an oil consumption test by the dealership. Dealership determine that 2 quarts of oil were consumed by the engine over the course of 1,000 mile which is indicates a failure of the test and problems within the engine.

Latest negative Kia Sedona car reviews

  1. Ruben Runolfsson 2025-10-28

    Vehicle year: 2002

I really appreciate the design and handling of this vehicle. However, I have noticed a few issues that I wanted to share. The back door is a bit heavy and requires a bit of force to close properly. Additionally, I have had to replace the front tires twice in the past year, and the alternator and brakes both needed to be replaced at the same time, which was a bit costly. I was also informed by dealers and repair shops that Kia's alternators are known for failing, so it's important to replace them proactively. Despite these issues, I'm happy to report that the front end, paint, and windows are all new due to a recent hurricane, so I won't need to replace those anytime soon.

  2. Martin Zieme 2025-10-28

    Vehicle year: 2004

If you're looking for a speed demon that turns like it's on rails, this might not be the vehicle for you. However, if you're like me and have a family that loves to travel, this is a great choice. In my humble opinion, it's way better than any North American minivan, although not quite on par with Honda or Toyota, but still comparable to Nissan. I bought it used to save money, as the Sedona has a terrible resale value, but it's an excellent used buy. It handles great for a van, and although it's a bit noisier than most minivans, it feels solid and well-built. Acceleration is more than adequate, and overall, I'm very happy with this vehicle.

  3. Keith Turner 2025-10-24

    Vehicle year: 2003

It seems that KIA products may not be the most reliable option for long-term use. Unfortunately, I had a negative experience with my KIA Sedona, which suffered from terminal engine failure at 79,000 miles. Despite the long haul warranty, KIA refused to cover the repair costs, leaving me with a $1,000 scheduled maintenance bill at the dealer. As a result, I have decided not to purchase any KIA or Hyundai products in the future. I will also share my experience with others to help them make informed decisions. It's worth noting that some other auto makers refer to KIA's as throw away cars due to their low resell value after just a few years. I hope this information helps you make the best decision for your needs.

  4. Jamir Stamm 2025-10-23

    Vehicle year: 2021

The radio has been malfunctioning since the day of purchase, with frequent cutouts. Additionally, the passenger side mirror and tail light remain on, and the HVAC system operates without reflecting on the instrument panel. Despite the installation of a new radio system, the issue persists, and it appears to be associated with the auxiliary input/connection. While some blind spots take getting used to, the vehicle's maneuverability is fantastic, and the engine is a beast. The car is also very comfortable for long-distance travel. However, it is disappointing that the passenger front seat lacks power adjustment despite having heated seats.

  5. Conrad Baumbach 2025-10-18

    Vehicle year: 2021

I carefully examined both vehicles and ultimately decided to purchase the Sedona for several reasons. Not only did it have all the features I was looking for, but it was also priced 6 thousand dollars less than the other option. Although I had read some reviews that mentioned a stiff and bumpy ride, I regret not taking a longer test drive to experience it for myself. Unfortunately, the ride was indeed quite uncomfortable and even aggravated my back. As a result, I made the difficult decision to sell the vehicle just three months after purchasing it, which resulted in a significant financial loss.

  1. Gordon Kuhlman 2025-10-29

    Vehicle year: 2014

We've only had the Sedona for two weeks, but we absolutely love it! It feels great to drive, has plenty of power, and cost a lot less than the Toyota or Honda vans. The pedals even adjust for my wife, who is only 5 feet tall, and she loves it. It has leather seats, a power seat with memory, and everything we could want. It even has a sunroof, which we didn't think we needed, but it's a nice touch. We can't think of anything it's missing! It has a backup camera, backup warning, and Bluetooth. After a year, we still love the van. We take our three grandchildren places and have plenty of room for all of our stuff. Plus, we get between 20 and 22 miles per gallon in mixed driving. Thanks for making such a great vehicle!

We purchased this van with less than 20k miles on it and have found it to be an extremely reliable and dependable vehicle. It has never left us stranded or even threatened to do so. We have only had regular maintenance performed, such as oil changes, brake pads, tires, and an alignment or two. There is nothing to report, just normal wear and tear. The only negative aspect I can think of is that I am not fond of the fabric used in the interior, as it seems to collect lint more than any other car I have owned. We did experience some issues with the sliding side doors, but one was a factory recall and the other was fixed by the dealership at no cost when they were replacing tire tpms sensors. I am grateful that we do not have power doors, as they can be expensive to fix.

Now that we're retired and have young grandkids, we decided to get a minivan despite the stigma associated with driving one. We weren't sure at first, but we're so glad we made the move! We've always been SUV fans, from a small CRV to our last Lincoln MKX, but the minivan's height, comfortable seats, and versatile cargo space won us over. We love that each passenger has their own AC vent, there are plenty of USB plugs for the kids, and my 6'2

Some reviews have complained about the gas mileage of the Sedona, but I have to disagree. My wife and I took an 8000 mile road trip and got an impressive 24.5 mpg, even with a full load of people and luggage. On a more recent 400 mile road trip, we got 26.7 mpg. The Sedona handles extremely well with a very good turning radius, which we found to be better than the Pacifica. The dash layout is well thought out and attractive, and the navigation system is the best I've ever used. The vehicle is extremely quiet and tracks perfectly on the interstate. It's quick too, with a 0-60 rating of 7.4 seconds. The Sedona looks and acts more like an SUV than a minivan, and the Nappa leather and airplane type second row seats are a true luxury. The dual sunroof really lets the light inside. I've driven the Pacifica, Odyssey and Sienna, but I still think the Sedona is the best vehicle. Update to my review one year later: I still think the Sedona SXL is a great vehicle. We have over 16,000 miles on it, and have had no problems. We are currently on a 12,000 mile road trip around the USA, with about 3,000 miles completed. Average MPG so far on the trip is 24.7. Handling on the interstate continues to be perfect, ride is excellent. No complaints whatsoever. It is now January 2018 and we have 28,500 miles on the Sedona. Our 12,000 mile trip ended up to be 12,600 miles, and we averaged 24.5 mpg. I can't figure out why the Sedona is rated low on gas mileage, I think it's fabulous. So far we have had zero problems. I've never had a car before, with over 28,000 miles on it, that didn't have something go wrong. It still rides great, and handles well. I thought our 12,600 miles trip would be very tiring. It turned out to be just the opposite. The Sedona is a comfortable and easy-to-drive car with lots of power. It performs exceptionally well on California freeways, making it easy to keep up with traffic and pass other vehicles. Unlike my previous SUV, which had 'high effort' steering that made driving tiresome, the Sedona offers two different steering efforts to choose from. As a 78-year-old driver, I find it a joy to drive this car. In fact, my wife and I love it so much that we've taken it on multiple road trips, covering over 4400 miles so far. The Sedona has performed perfectly, and we're getting an impressive 24.9 MPG on this trip. We've had no problems with the car, even after putting 43,500 miles on it. It's an easy car to drive, and all the high-tech features work perfectly. It was the best buying decision we ever made, and even my wife, who initially didn't want a minivan, now loves it!

I had some trouble with my Sedona when it was new; the battery kept draining. However, the dealer was incredibly helpful and went above and beyond to find the problem (a computer module that wasn't connected tightly). KIA even called me a couple of times during the repair without me asking for their help, which was really nice. I was really impressed with their customer service; it made dealing with the annoying issue so much easier. Since that little problem was solved, the van has been a dream. I took it on an 1800 mile trip last month, and it performed flawlessly and was so relaxing to drive. Normally that kind of trip tires me out, but the driving comfort is so great that I was able to drive much further in a day than normal. I can't wait to take more trips!
