The Kia Carnival (Korean: 기아 카니발) is a minivan manufactured by Kia since 1998. It was marketed globally under various nameplates, prominently as the Kia Sedona.

The first generation Carnival was introduced in January 1998, and was marketed in a single, short wheelbase version. Second generation models were marketed (2006–2014) in short and long wheelbase variants. A rebadged variant of the second generation was offered in North America as the Hyundai Entourage (2007–2009). Beginning in 2010, the second generation model received updated equipment, including Kia's corporate Tiger Nose grille, as introduced by its then new design chief, Peter Schreyer. Kia introduced its third generation minivan in 2014, solely in a long wheelbase format. The fourth generation was introduced in 2020, when Kia also began using the Carnival nameplate worldwide.

First generation (KV-II; 1998)

The first generation model was manufactured and marketed differently for specific regions, including under a joint venture in the Chinese market with Dongfeng Yueda Kia, as well as the Naza Ria in Malaysia.

In Indonesia and the Philippines, both Carnival/Sedona names were used. Initially introduced as the Carnival in 2001, from 2003 onwards, it was renamed as the Sedona.

Common Kia Sedona problems

The Kia Sedona is a popular minivan that has been on the market for over two decades. While most Sedonas are known for their reliability and ability to last up to 250,000 miles with general maintenance, there are certain model years and common problems that owners should be aware of.

One of the most problematic model years for the Sedona is 2016, which is the only model year from the third generation to make the list of years to avoid. The 2016 Sedona has been plagued with electrical concerns, including blinkers that react with the wrong rear light and headlights that abruptly go off, significantly increasing the likelihood of a nighttime collision. Additionally, the 2016 Sedona has been known for expensive repair costs, making it not worth the money.

Another problematic model year for the Sedona is 2002, which was subjected to a slew of safety recalls immediately after its launch. The 2002 Sedona has been known for awkward handling, an underpowered engine, and faulty seat belts that were unable to offer effective restraint in the event of a collision. The most recent recall was issued in 2005 to repair wires that touched the metal beneath the front seats, causing occasional flames.

The 2012 Sedona was infamous for a low roof strength rating and safety concerns if the vehicle was to overturn. Additionally, the construction and safety rating for the vehicle cage only received a "satisfactory" grade. The 2012 model year has also been known for electrical wiring issues from soy-based material, which attracted animals to the undercarriage causing damage to the electrical system.

Common problems with the Sedona include trouble starting the engine, noisy AC, engine misfire, non-functioning gears, malfunctioning turn signals, noisy braking, leaking power steering pipes, air conditioning problems, poor engine idling, and fuel pump failure. These problems can be caused by a faulty switch in the selector lever, uneven brake callipers, leaking power steering pipes, a faulty condenser, a faulty throttle position sensor, and a defective vehicle immobiliser control module.

To fix these problems, owners can replace the switch, selector lever, brake system, power steering pipes, condenser, throttle position sensor, and vehicle immobiliser control module. These parts can be found on BreakerYard.com, where there are also tutorial videos available online to help with the installation process.

In conclusion, while the Kia Sedona is known for its reliability, there are certain model years and common problems that owners should be aware of. By being informed and taking the necessary steps to address these issues, Sedona owners can ensure that their minivans are safe, reliable, and running smoothly.

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-12-16
  • Date Complaint: 2024-10-21
  • VIN: KNDMB5C19H6
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: My engine seized. When I took it to my mechanic they stated it was due to low compression and that Kia engines were known for this issue. He suggested I take it to a Kia dealer to have them replace the engine. I took it and I was denied the replacement. I did some research and found that this issue was in fact very popular among Kia owners. Some expressing their engines actually ignited. I also found there was a class-action lawsuit against Kia for this exact issue. I noticed all Kia models were included in the suit except for the Sedona. During my research I found a mass of Sedona owners who had the same compression issues. It baffles me why my car wasn't included when it has the exact isdues as the other models made by the same manufacturer. I would like to file a complaint in hopes that other Sedona owners have done the same, and we can bring light to this issue, and possibly a solution.

  • VIN: KNDMB5C10K6
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: On [XXX] at [XXX] the following incident happen with my 2019 KIA Sedona. The ABS and Traction Control Warning lights came ON when I applied the brakes when approaching a 4 way stop sign intersection, I heard a loud grinding sound from the back of the Sedona. The Sedona took longer to come to a stop, a full vehicle length past the stop bar. I was put at risk by the Sedona being in the intersection, instead of stopping at the stop bar. After clearing the intersection, I pulled over the Sedona, turned it off and then restarted it. Both the ABS and Traction Control Lights came back ON. I called the Jackson Kia Dealer in Cocoa Florida and got an answering machine for the service department. I left a message letting them know about the alarm lights and that I had already has at least 2 ABS modules replaced. I asked for an appointment as soon as possible to fix the problem. I had been told previously by KIA that it was safe to drive, but that I would have manual brakes in the rear and to apply breaks earlier, plus get the Sedona in for repair at the next opportunity for an appointment. As of yet the dealership has not seen the Sedona to diagnose the exact problem and cause. This is when these systems first appeared, and I had no other indications of a problem. • Date Complaint: 2024-10-04
  • VIN: KNDMC5C11G6

Further inspection by the dealership confirmed there was no visible oil leak and was followed by an oil consumption test by the dealership. Dealership determine that 2 quarts of oil were consumed by the engine over the course of 1,000 mile which is indicates a failure of the test and problems within the engine.

Latest negative Kia Sedona car reviews

  1. Issac Cassin 2025-03-26

    Vehicle year: 2003

Although my personal experience with this van has been disappointing, it is important to note that there may be variations in individual vehicles. However, based on my experience, I cannot recommend purchasing a van with a 3.5 liter V6 engine.

  2. Schuyler Grady 2025-03-26

    Vehicle year: 2014

Let's start with the positives. The interior of the mini-van is spacious and the seats are comfortable. The van has a lot of power and the visibility out the windows is good. Although the technology is outdated, it was expected at the time of purchase. However, the Bluetooth connectivity is not reliable and the fuel mileage is disappointing, even when driven conservatively. Unfortunately, the seat warmers were not as advertised and the dealer was unable to fix the issue. On the bright side, the dealer was able to replace the locking mechanism and fix the rear windshield wiper. Overall, while there were some let downs, the van still has some great features. They had to replace both the rear glass and the rear windshield wiper. Unfortunately, a new issue has emerged inside the van and the dealer doesn't seem willing to take care of it. Let's see what happens next. From my perspective, this van has been a true disappointment and a letdown. If I could go back, I would not purchase it. There have been too many issues, and currently, my odometer is sitting at 10,000 miles, and I have only had the van for just over a year. Another thing to consider is the resale value. All cars lose value, but Kia seems to be like a boulder dropped in the ocean...the value drops that fast.

  3. Jermey Reynolds 2025-03-25

    Vehicle year: 2018

The radio has been malfunctioning since the day of purchase, with frequent cutouts. Additionally, the passenger side mirror and tail light remain on, and the HVAC system operates without reflecting on the instrument panel. Despite the installation of a new radio system, the issue persists, and it appears to be associated with the auxiliary input/connection. While some blind spots take getting used to, the vehicle's maneuverability is fantastic, and the engine is a beast. The car is also very comfortable for long-distance travel. However, it is disappointing that the passenger front seat lacks power adjustment despite having heated seats.

  4. Alexandre Parker 2025-03-25

    Vehicle year: 2002

I bought the car used and expected some minor issues. Two days after the purchase, the dealer replaced the left front wheel, both front tires (which were worn down on the inside), all brakes including rotors. The car drove great for five months, but then it wouldn't start. After some investigation, it turned out that the car needed a new cam sensor, some other sensor, new belts, water pump, power steering hose, manifold, and tire rotation. Unfortunately, the new tires are also beginning to wear down too much on the inside. If you are considering purchasing this car, I would advise you to be cautious. Based on the mileage, these parts should still be in good condition. It seems that KIA parts do not last under normal use, and they may use a cheap, bad grade of plastic for their parts, as they easily break.

  5. Jaylan Bashirian 2025-03-23

    Vehicle year: 2004

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my minivan that I bought new from the dealer at the end of '03. I have to say, it has plenty of power and ample passenger room, which is great! However, I did notice that cargo space is very limited. In the first 1.5 years, it ran flawlessly, but then the brakes began to squeal. Thankfully, we were able to replace the brakes on warranty twice in the first 50K miles. I wonder if they were a bit undersized for the weight of the vehicle? We also had to replace the wheel bearings, again on warranty. The Kia dealership where we bought and service the car is tops, but I wish we didn't have to spend so much time visiting with them on warranty issues. Unfortunately, the engine sounds like it's getting tired, so we've decided to trade it in this weekend (probably not for another Kia) before it gives up the ghost for good. Thank you for listening to my story!

    Vehicle year: 2007

This van has been a part of our family for a while now and it has never let us down. It has plenty of room and the stow and go seats make it very convenient for storage. Although the leather seats are not as luxurious as the ones in our previous Pontiac Montana, they are still very comfortable. It can be difficult for a man to find a minivan seat that provides enough support for comfortable driving, but this one does a decent job. UPDATE: It's now 2018 and we still absolutely love it!

I'm so glad to hear that you've had such a positive experience with your van! It's great to know that it has been so reliable for you, even after putting so many miles on it. Thank you for sharing your experience!

We recently traded in our 2011 Soul for a Sedona. While the Soul was a great little car, it was difficult for us to get in and out of, especially with artificial knees. However, we absolutely love our Sedona! We opted for the power package, which gives us a lot of extras, and we're averaging around 23-24 mpg. While it may not be as fuel efficient as the Soul, it's definitely a lot easier to get in and out of. The engine is impressively powerful and will throw you back in your seat if you kick the gas. Plus, with a six-speed transmission, we don't even feel it shift. At 70 mph, it runs around 1600-1700 rpms, which saves the engine greatly over time. With GM and Ford no longer making vans, there are only a few choices available, but we couldn't be happier with our Sedona. Love it!

After test driving the Toyota, Honda and KIA, I'm happy to say that we decided to go with the KIA. The warranty and safety rating were big factors in our decision, and we were able to get a fully loaded EX for only $21,000 total - which was a great deal compared to the Toyota and Honda options we looked at. We've only had our KIA for less than a week, but I'm already loving it. The 3.5L/V6 engine is snappy and it's incredibly quiet, comfortable, and smooth. Overall, we're very happy with our decision to buy a KIA.

I purchased my Sedona two months ago after my previous vehicle was damaged by a drunk driver. It is an 11-year-old 2006 model with 123k miles, but so far, it has been great. The extra space compared to my previous mid-sized sedan is fantastic, and I love how the 3rd row seats fold down into the floor, providing a flat space. The storage space is impressive, and the little pop-down back seat viewing mirror is a great feature. The automatic headlights and tinted rear-view mirror are also very helpful. Overall, this van is just downright cool compared to my previous car. The only downside is the wind noise at high speeds, but turning up the radio helps. Additionally, the engine makes some strange noises, but two mechanics have checked it out, and it seems to be normal. The side doors can be a bit tricky to keep open and lock in place, but it's a minor issue.
