The Kia Carnival (Korean: 기아 카니발) is a minivan manufactured by Kia since 1998. It was marketed globally under various nameplates, prominently as the Kia Sedona.

The first generation Carnival was introduced in January 1998, and was marketed in a single, short wheelbase version. Second generation models were marketed (2006–2014) in short and long wheelbase variants. A rebadged variant of the second generation was offered in North America as the Hyundai Entourage (2007–2009). Beginning in 2010, the second generation model received updated equipment, including Kia's corporate Tiger Nose grille, as introduced by its then new design chief, Peter Schreyer. Kia introduced its third generation minivan in 2014, solely in a long wheelbase format. The fourth generation was introduced in 2020, when Kia also began using the Carnival nameplate worldwide.

First generation (KV-II; 1998)

The first generation model was manufactured and marketed differently for specific regions, including under a joint venture in the Chinese market with Dongfeng Yueda Kia, as well as the Naza Ria in Malaysia.

In Indonesia and the Philippines, both Carnival/Sedona names were used. Initially introduced as the Carnival in 2001, from 2003 onwards, it was renamed as the Sedona.

Common Kia Sedona problems

The Kia Sedona is a popular minivan that has been on the market for over two decades. While most Sedonas are known for their reliability and ability to last up to 250,000 miles with general maintenance, there are certain model years and common problems that owners should be aware of.

One of the most problematic model years for the Sedona is 2016, which is the only model year from the third generation to make the list of years to avoid. The 2016 Sedona has been plagued with electrical concerns, including blinkers that react with the wrong rear light and headlights that abruptly go off, significantly increasing the likelihood of a nighttime collision. Additionally, the 2016 Sedona has been known for expensive repair costs, making it not worth the money.

Another problematic model year for the Sedona is 2002, which was subjected to a slew of safety recalls immediately after its launch. The 2002 Sedona has been known for awkward handling, an underpowered engine, and faulty seat belts that were unable to offer effective restraint in the event of a collision. The most recent recall was issued in 2005 to repair wires that touched the metal beneath the front seats, causing occasional flames.

The 2012 Sedona was infamous for a low roof strength rating and safety concerns if the vehicle was to overturn. Additionally, the construction and safety rating for the vehicle cage only received a "satisfactory" grade. The 2012 model year has also been known for electrical wiring issues from soy-based material, which attracted animals to the undercarriage causing damage to the electrical system.

Common problems with the Sedona include trouble starting the engine, noisy AC, engine misfire, non-functioning gears, malfunctioning turn signals, noisy braking, leaking power steering pipes, air conditioning problems, poor engine idling, and fuel pump failure. These problems can be caused by a faulty switch in the selector lever, uneven brake callipers, leaking power steering pipes, a faulty condenser, a faulty throttle position sensor, and a defective vehicle immobiliser control module.

To fix these problems, owners can replace the switch, selector lever, brake system, power steering pipes, condenser, throttle position sensor, and vehicle immobiliser control module. These parts can be found on BreakerYard.com, where there are also tutorial videos available online to help with the installation process.

In conclusion, while the Kia Sedona is known for its reliability, there are certain model years and common problems that owners should be aware of. By being informed and taking the necessary steps to address these issues, Sedona owners can ensure that their minivans are safe, reliable, and running smoothly.

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-12-16
  • Date Complaint: 2024-10-21
  • VIN: KNDMB5C19H6
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: My engine seized. When I took it to my mechanic they stated it was due to low compression and that Kia engines were known for this issue. He suggested I take it to a Kia dealer to have them replace the engine. I took it and I was denied the replacement. I did some research and found that this issue was in fact very popular among Kia owners. Some expressing their engines actually ignited. I also found there was a class-action lawsuit against Kia for this exact issue. I noticed all Kia models were included in the suit except for the Sedona. During my research I found a mass of Sedona owners who had the same compression issues. It baffles me why my car wasn't included when it has the exact isdues as the other models made by the same manufacturer. I would like to file a complaint in hopes that other Sedona owners have done the same, and we can bring light to this issue, and possibly a solution.

  • VIN: KNDMB5C10K6
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: On [XXX] at [XXX] the following incident happen with my 2019 KIA Sedona. The ABS and Traction Control Warning lights came ON when I applied the brakes when approaching a 4 way stop sign intersection, I heard a loud grinding sound from the back of the Sedona. The Sedona took longer to come to a stop, a full vehicle length past the stop bar. I was put at risk by the Sedona being in the intersection, instead of stopping at the stop bar. After clearing the intersection, I pulled over the Sedona, turned it off and then restarted it. Both the ABS and Traction Control Lights came back ON. I called the Jackson Kia Dealer in Cocoa Florida and got an answering machine for the service department. I left a message letting them know about the alarm lights and that I had already has at least 2 ABS modules replaced. I asked for an appointment as soon as possible to fix the problem. I had been told previously by KIA that it was safe to drive, but that I would have manual brakes in the rear and to apply breaks earlier, plus get the Sedona in for repair at the next opportunity for an appointment. As of yet the dealership has not seen the Sedona to diagnose the exact problem and cause. This is when these systems first appeared, and I had no other indications of a problem. • VIN: KNDMC5C11G6

Further inspection by the dealership confirmed there was no visible oil leak and was followed by an oil consumption test by the dealership. Dealership determine that 2 quarts of oil were consumed by the engine over the course of 1,000 mile which is indicates a failure of the test and problems within the engine.

Latest negative Kia Sedona car reviews

  1. Merlin Will 2025-11-07

    Vehicle year: 2006

I purchased a new '06 in '07, which came with a deal of a free RIO with the purchase of the van. However, the paperwork seemed suspicious as we ended up with a loan on the 'free' RIO. Unfortunately, the van has not performed well since then. The headlights constantly go out, the side doors freeze shut when the temperature drops below 40 degrees, and the third-row seat keeps getting caught. The brakes and tires were worn out at just 20000 miles, and the alignment has never been right. Although the airbag has been fixed, the light still comes on, and the engine light is on and off all the time. Despite the dealership's assurance that there is nothing wrong with it, the van keeps acting like it is going to die on the road. As a result, the value of the van is next to nothing.

  2. Braeden Paucek 2025-11-05

    Vehicle year: 2002

Fair warning to anyone considering this car: it has proven to be totally unsafe as it has a tendency to 'turn off' in the middle of driving, anywhere. This is not ideal for what most people buy as a 'family' car. It has left my wife and kids stranded three times, and me several times as well. The issue could be related to the fuel pump/filter, air mass sensor, TPS, IPM Module, Junction Box, cold air sensor, or the key cylinder. Even my mechanic is stumped. Additionally, the car has some small hardware issues, such as the sliding door handle falling off. Unfortunately, it has become a rust bucket. I will be receiving $250.00 to haul it away. I cannot in good conscience sell this car to another party based on what I know. In conclusion, KIA's reliability just plain sucks! That being said, I hope this warning helps you make an informed decision.

  3. Cody Altenwerth 2025-11-04

    Vehicle year: 2003

I purchased the 2003 Kia Sedona in November 2003 and was pleased with the interior specifications it offered. However, I have had a number of issues with this car and it has required frequent visits to the dealership service department. I would advise caution when considering this car. Fortunately, the warranty has been helpful in addressing the problems I have encountered. I plan to replace this car once the warranty expires. The issues I have experienced include a broken speedometer, malfunctioning back heater, peeling rear defrost strips, non-functional rear power outlets, alternator failure, battery replacement, broken front defrost, malfunctioning power steering, broken power driver seat, a broken fuse box cover, and sloppy remote entry.

  4. Estevan Hane 2025-11-03

    Vehicle year: 2012

The sticker indicated that this minivan would get 18 city and 25 hwy, which I was expecting when I bought the vehicle. However, after driving over 1200 miles in 2 months, the best I've been able to achieve is 16.5 MPG. It's frustrating that I can't even drive 300 miles before needing to fill up the 21.1 gallon tank. Despite this, I still believe that this was a great purchase as everything else about the van meets or exceeds my expectations. If only the gas mileage was better, it would be perfect!

  5. Brannon Hansen 2025-11-02

    Vehicle year: 2002

I'm curious about the authors of these reviews. In my experience, I would not recommend purchasing a Kia. Unfortunately, the Sedona model tends to have a lot of issues, and you may end up relying heavily on the associated warranty. I don't mean to be negative, but I believe it's important to be aware of the potential problems. I could go on and on about the issues we faced, including problems with the rotors, doors (front, back, and sliding), engine, alternator, heater control, brakes, and electrical system. I would strongly suggest speaking with someone who has owned one for at least a year to get a better understanding. I wish I had done so myself!

Hi there! I wanted to share my experience with my 2007 KIA Sedona LX. I bought it used in late 2009 with 37,000 miles and it was definitely a good value for the money. The car has a lot of power and drives smoothly, making it a very comfortable and roomy ride. I also feel incredibly safe in it, thanks to the electronic stability control, 8 airbags, and ABS. Plus, I really like the look of it! While the gas mileage isn't the best for city driving, I still get about 20 mpg. However, I did have some issues with the transmission that needed to be replaced at 88000 miles, which was a bit of a surprise. Despite this, I still think it's a great car overall. Thanks for listening!

I was looking for a basic family transportation vehicle that I could drive until it drops, so trade-in value was not a huge concern for me. The Kia fit the bill perfectly. My dealership was very fair and upfront with all the numbers, nothing was hidden and everything was clearly explained. I received great financing at 2.9% for 60 months and substantial rebates as well. I was also able to negotiate the price of the vehicle close to the invoice price. Overall, I got a vehicle at a price that could not be matched by any of the competitors for the same equipment level by thousands of dollars. The dealership made the whole process easy and stress-free, and I'm very happy with my purchase.

I have to say, I absolutely love this van! It drives great, has a lot of pick up and go, and looks fantastic. This is actually my third van, and I have to say it's my favorite so far. I've owned a Ford before, as well as a 2004 Kia Sedona, but this model is by far the best. I'm definitely planning on keeping this one for a long time!

After test driving and researching other mini-vans, we found the Kia Sedona to be the best performer and the best value. I must say, I gave up my SUV-loving ways and purchased a minivan in preparation for the birth of our first child. And you know what? I don't miss my SUV at all! With a baby on the way and two dogs to transport, this van really is the most convenient and fun vehicle I have driven. The great handling and features like the stowaway third-row seats have made us thrilled with our decision.
