2012 Kia Sedona problems
The Kia Carnival (Korean: 기아 카니발) is a minivan manufactured by Kia since 1998. It was marketed globally under various nameplates, prominently as the Kia Sedona.
The first generation Carnival was introduced in January 1998, and was marketed in a single, short wheelbase version. Second generation models were marketed (2006–2014) in short and long wheelbase variants. A rebadged variant of the second generation was offered in North America as the Hyundai Entourage (2007–2009). Beginning in 2010, the second generation model received updated equipment, including Kia's corporate Tiger Nose grille, as introduced by its then new design chief, Peter Schreyer. Kia introduced its third generation minivan in 2014, solely in a long wheelbase format. The fourth generation was introduced in 2020, when Kia also began using the Carnival nameplate worldwide.
First generation (KV-II; 1998)
The first generation model was manufactured and marketed differently for specific regions, including under a joint venture in the Chinese market with Dongfeng Yueda Kia, as well as the Naza Ria in Malaysia.
In Indonesia and the Philippines, both Carnival/Sedona names were used. Initially introduced as the Carnival in 2001, from 2003 onwards, it was renamed as the Sedona.

Common 2012 Kia Sedona problems
The 2012 Kia Sedona has been reported to have several common problems by its owners. The most frequently mentioned issues are related to the key ignition, gear shifting, and the side sliding doors.
One of the most common problems with the 2012 Kia Sedona is the key ignition problem. Owners have reported issues with the key ignition cylinder, which can cause the car to not start or randomly shut off while driving. This issue can be caused by a faulty ignition switch or a problem with the car's electrical system. The ignition problem can be dangerous, as it can cause the car to stall in traffic, making it difficult to control and potentially leading to accidents.
Another common issue with the 2012 Kia Sedona is the gear shifting problem. Owners have reported issues with the car's automatic transmission, which can cause the car to shift erratically or not shift at all. This issue can be caused by a faulty transmission control module or a problem with the car's wiring. The gear shifting problem can make the car difficult to drive and can potentially lead to accidents if the car is not able to shift into the correct gear.
The side sliding doors of the 2012 Kia Sedona have also been reported to have problems. Owners have reported issues with the doors not opening or closing properly, as well as the doors not stopping when an obstruction is in their way. This issue can be caused by a faulty door control module or a problem with the car's wiring. The door problem can be dangerous, as it can cause the doors to open or close unexpectedly, potentially causing injury to passengers or damaging property.
It is important to note that these problems are based on owner complaints and may not be representative of all 2012 Kia Sedonas. Additionally, some of these problems may have been resolved through recalls or warranty repairs. However, it is important for potential buyers to be aware of these common issues and to have the car inspected by a qualified mechanic before purchasing.
How many miles will a 2012 Kia Sedona last?
It can easily last over 200,000 miles as long as you properly keep up with its maintenance and service schedule. The Kia Sedona is a reliable vehicle that doesn't cost much to maintain in comparison with other vehicles in the same category.
Is the Kia Sedona reliable?
The severity of repairs is low, and these issues are less frequent than average, so the Sedona is one of the more reliable vehicles on the road.
Is there any recalls on a 2012 Kia Sedona?
Vehicles recalled: All 2011-2012 model year Kia Sedona vehicles manufactured from March 3, 2010, through Aug. 14, 2012. The problem: Heat generated in the engine compartment under certain conditions could cause the fuel rail to crack, leading to a fuel leak and possibly a fire.
Do Kia Sedona's have transmission problems?
If you don't routinely and always change your fluids at least every 30,000 miles or so, you may find that your Kia Sedona transmission will quickly slip.

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-02-05
- VIN: KNDMG4C75C6
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: The auto was diagnosed with a leaking ABS system which is an ongoing problem with this auto maker. The dealership stated there are currently no parts in the US to replace it. Not sure when they will be available. They want to charge me $2900 to buy the part not including labor costs. It seems this model is not currently under recall so I will have to pay. Told me not to drive the car or park it in the garage. They also refuse to give me a loaner car. I am sure this replacement part should be included with the other model recalls. They have a problem and want the consumer to pay. This is a safety issue with ALL their models.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-10-21
- VIN: KNDMG4C7XC6
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
- Summary: Unknown. I've replaced the alternator and battery. The alternator many times and still having lights come on. Mostly the "brake and battery " lights. It's sitting till further notice. Not drive able.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-08-25
- VIN: KNDMG4C75C6
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: Car immobilizer/Theft deterrent - The company is telling me that my KIA's VIN indicated that it does not have the immobilizer/Theft deterrent issue. We drove the car to the dealership with a backup key we made just for unlocking doors. This is a key with no chip or FOB and the car starts and ran fine. This seems to be a clear example of how the immobilizer is not working. However, they refuse to say anything other than the VIN is not on the list. How do I get any help with this? Thanks [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-03-05
- VIN: KNDMG4C71C6
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: The power lock on the sliding door on the driver's side does not latch. In order to fully close the door, you must turn off the power lock for the door. Otherwise, it unlatches and dings the entire time you are driving. The door without the power turned on is very difficult to open and sometimes will not open. This is a safety concern. Other models have been recalled. Why has this one not been recalled?
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-09-01
- VIN: kndmg4c71c6
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: The passenger door will not open from the inside by pulling on the handle or pushing the door open button. Pulling on the outside door handle will not open the door as well. The remote wont open them as well. This is a safety issue as passengers can't get out of car in case of accident. I have brought it to a Kia dealer and they said it works fine for them and if the problem doesn't occur when they have it they can't fix it. I have an extended warranty letter from Kia that there is a problem with the rear sliding doors. I am mystified as to why I can't get this problem fixed.

ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-03-04
- VIN: kndmg4c75c6
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: I have replaced my Oil Pressure sensor two times due to oil leaks since I have owned the vehicle at my own expense. I say a recall for the exact problem (19V101) for 2011-2012 KIA Sedona. My engine is leaking again so I call KIA about this and thy said that even though I have a 2012 Sedona that my VIN is not covered. Since I have already replaced this two times I find it hard to believe that my VAN is not having the same issues as the vehicles covered in the recall. If that is the case. That would mean that there are other 2012 Sedona's out there that may have the same problem but never get notified about the recall.
EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2020-09-09
- VIN: Kndmg4c73c6

The contact was able to extinguish the fire with the assistance of the fire department. A fire department report and a police report were filed. There were no injuries sustained. The vehicle was towed to a tow lot, where it was totaled. The dealer and the manufacturer were not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 190,102.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2017-05-19
- VIN: kndmh4c70c6
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: The contact owns a 2012 Kia Sedona. The contact stated that upon purchase of the vehicle, the sliding door would not close as needed and would independently open while driving without warning. The contact also stated that the electrical power mirrors would also operate independently without warning. The contact then received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 20V101000 (Fuel System, Gasoline) and took the vehicle to the dealer for repair. The contact was also provided an estimate for the repair of other vehicle failures. Two days after the repair while driving 50 MPH, the contact depressed the brake pedal as he approached a stoplight. The light turned green and the accelerator pedal was depressed, and the vehicle stalled in the middle of the intersection. The contact was forced to make an illegal U-turn. The contact turned the key to the off position; however, the engine continued to run with several unknown warning lights on the instrument panel. The contact saw steam coming from the engine and upon inspection, the contact saw the radiator cap blow off as the vehicle lost motive power. The contact had the vehicle towed to the dealer where they informed him that the axle shaft, water pump, crankshaft pulley, alternator, oil pan gasket, drive belts, and battery all need to be replaced. The manufacturer was notified of the failure but offered no assistance. The vehicle remained in the possession of the dealer and was not yet repaired. The failure mileage was 69,107.

- Summary: THIS IS UNRELATED TO THE SAFETY RECALL FOR THE FUEL RAIL The electronic door locks fail, (mine are not fully automatic, but when you turn on the key you can hear the safety locks trying to engage before permitting the vehicle to move - they do not work. Worse even with the key, the doors will not consistently lock or unlock. Doors can become locked to the point that you can not manually open them, creating a fire hazard for occupants. Additionally, there is NO safety or emergency release on the back hatch. if you are inside when this locking aberration occurs, you must exit via a side (if it HAPPENS to be working) or front door (again, if it happens to be working. I fail to understand why this is not a major safety issue and why no recall has been issued. There are literally 1000s of such reports on various car forums. With at least one registered here: CS1603A (https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/2016/MC-10090051-5448.pdf Confirmed via independent service center. Records available upon request. THE TIRES WERE APPROXIMATELY 4 YEARS OLD WITH LESS THAN 30,000 MILES ON THEM (THE WARRANTY IS FOR 60,000 MILES). ONE EVENT OCCURRED WHILE DRIVING AT 70 MPH. BOTH TREAD SEPARATION EVENTS CAUSED DAMAGE TO THE VEHICLE, THE REPAIR OF WHICH WAS ESTIMATED AT $3,195. MORE IMPORTANTLY, THE EVENTS PUT THE SAFETY OF MY FAMILY AT RISK. YOKOHAMA REFUSED TO ASSUME RESPONSIBILITY DUE TO THE TIRES BEING UNAVAILABLE FOR FORENSIC EXAMINATION. THIS WAS IN SPITE OF MY PROVIDING PHOTOGRAPHS OF BOTH EVENTS CLEARLY SHOWING TREAD SEPARATION HAD OCCURRED. I GUESS YOKOHAMA EXPECTED ME TO CARRY TWO DAMAGED TIRES BACK FROM THE VACATION (AND LEAVE MY FAMILY BEHIND TO NOT OVERLOAD THE VEHICLE?).

- Consequence: If the primary latch is inadvertently released and the secondary latch is not engaged, the hood could unexpectedly open while driving, increasing the risk of a vehicle crash.
- Remedy: Kia will notify owners and dealers will replace the secondary hood latch or clean and lubricate the latch, depending on the vehicle's location and the condition of the latch. Negative 2012 Kia Sedona car reviews
Positive 2012 Kia Sedona car reviews
-
I previously owned a 2004 Chrysler T&C that required frequent maintenance from the day I bought it. So, I decided to trade it in for a Kia Sedona. I purchased a 2010 Sedona EX with Luxury and entertainment packages. I have owned my Sedona for a month now and I must say, it is a really nice vehicle, especially compared to my T&C. It's very comfortable, the ride is extremely smooth, and the amenities are terrific. I would definitely purchase this vehicle given a second opportunity.
-
This car definitely has a high ratio of quality and price. It runs very smoothly and quietly.
-
Very nice, smooth ride, good visibility, and all the electronics you could want. I should buy one.
-
I completely understand that some people may have concerns about KIA Motors' build quality and reliability, but I have to say that my experience with this minivan has been fantastic! I purchased mine at Jim Click Kia and the salespeople were incredibly friendly and helpful. While it's true that minivans aren't known for their fuel efficiency, the price point for this vehicle is unbeatable - I paid just 25k for a fully loaded model! I've never had any issues with the power doors, and the engine is incredibly strong. It's hard to drive this car without feeling the power under your foot! The transmission shifts smoothly and overall, I'm extremely satisfied with my purchase. If you're in the market for a minivan, I highly recommend taking a look at KIA's offerings.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with the 2010 Sedona. While it's similar to the previous year's model, there are a few differences that I noticed when I traded in my 2006 Sedona. The 2010 model comes with a rear spoiler and a rearview camera, which I found really helpful. The paint job also looks nicer to me. Inside, there's only one glove box instead of two, and there are no slide-out cup holders on the center console. One thing to keep in mind is that not all 2010 Sedonas come with HD Radio, even though Kia Motors magazine 'Open Road' says they do. I found out that my Sedona, which was produced in August 2009, doesn't have it. Just something to double-check if that's important to you!

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my car's battery. I purchased it back in March 2010 and everything was great until about 6 months later when I started having some unexplained issues with the battery dying. I took it to the dealer, but they couldn't find anything wrong. Unfortunately, the issue still persists sporadically even to this day.

Although some customers have had negative experiences with KIA, it may be worth considering other options before making a final decision. Some features may not be included as standard, and the fuel efficiency may not be as high as other models. Additionally, some customers have reported issues with handling and acceleration. However, there are some convenient features such as radio controls on the steering wheel. It may be worth investing in a more reliable minivan in the long run.

The car's quality did not meet my expectations. The seat material is thin, the electronics are unresponsive and unpredictable, and the brakes pose a safety hazard that Kia has not taken responsibility for. Pebbles from the road can get into the calipers and impede proper braking application, which Kia considers an environmental situation rather than a design flaw. Unfortunately, the dealer is not willing to cover the cost of repairs. Despite having only 1800 miles on the car, it has already required two repairs. If you are accustomed to driving a well-built vehicle, you may be disappointed with this car.

I purchased a Sedona new in June 2011. Unfortunately, from day one, I experienced a series of small problems with it. Despite my efforts to have these issues resolved, the dealer was unable to provide a satisfactory solution. For instance, the radio had a mind of its own, switching between CD and radio mode, changing stations, and even shutting off completely. Despite spending a total of 12 days in the shop and having the radio replaced, the issue persisted. Additionally, I encountered problems with the idle pulley, batteries, and ground wires, which prevented the windows and locks from functioning properly. One dealer quoted me $450 to fix these issues. Ultimately, I decided to trade in the vehicle after 18 months, incurring a loss of $8000. Despite these challenges, I remain confident in my ability to make informed decisions and find a vehicle that better suits my needs.

From Oldsmobile Silhouette to this. Although it has 4 miles less per gallon of gas than my 1999 and 2004, I appreciate its unique features. While it may ride a bit rough, it has a certain charm to it. In snowy conditions, it may require some extra care, but with good snow tires, it can handle the road. I have experienced some issues with the doors freezing shut in winter, but overall, it has been a reliable vehicle. While the wiper blades could be improved, they still do a decent job. The side mirrors could be better suited to the vehicle, but they get the job done. Although the arm rests have failed in the past, they are easily replaceable. While the radio may not be the best, it still serves its purpose. While this vehicle may not be for everyone, I appreciate its unique qualities and would consider it again in the future.
