2006 Kia Sedona problems

The Kia Carnival (Korean: 기아 카니발) is a minivan manufactured by Kia since 1998. It was marketed globally under various nameplates, prominently as the Kia Sedona.

The first generation Carnival was introduced in January 1998, and was marketed in a single, short wheelbase version. Second generation models were marketed (2006–2014) in short and long wheelbase variants. A rebadged variant of the second generation was offered in North America as the Hyundai Entourage (2007–2009). Beginning in 2010, the second generation model received updated equipment, including Kia's corporate Tiger Nose grille, as introduced by its then new design chief, Peter Schreyer. Kia introduced its third generation minivan in 2014, solely in a long wheelbase format. The fourth generation was introduced in 2020, when Kia also began using the Carnival nameplate worldwide.

First generation (KV-II; 1998)

The first generation model was manufactured and marketed differently for specific regions, including under a joint venture in the Chinese market with Dongfeng Yueda Kia, as well as the Naza Ria in Malaysia.

In Indonesia and the Philippines, both Carnival/Sedona names were used. Initially introduced as the Carnival in 2001, from 2003 onwards, it was renamed as the Sedona.

Common 2006 Kia Sedona problems

The Kia Sedona, produced between 1999 and 2006, has faced criticism for its mechanical reliability and cabin issues. Here are some of the common problems reported by owners of the Kia Sedona 2006:

  • Interior Trim and Carpet Damage: The interior trim of the Kia Sedona can show signs of abuse, and the carpets tend to become bobbly quickly. This issue has been reported by many owners, and some have replaced their carpets under Kia's three-year/unlimited mileage warranty. To prevent further damage, owners often fit carpet mats, but these can hide existing damage.
  • Engine Issues: The engines in the Kia Sedona can all give trouble. It is essential to check the oil's condition, look for exhaust smoke, and pay attention to the sound and response of the engine during a test drive. Severe rust can also be a problem, affecting the engine and other bodywork components.
  • Rear Sliding Doors: The rear sliding doors in the Kia Sedona should be inspected for proper function. Some Sedonas have had faulty air-con, and all tend to be heavy on brakes, particularly those used in town. The brakes can wear out quickly, especially if the vehicle is driven in stop-and-go traffic.
  • Sliding Door Latch Actuators: In some Kia Sedonas from 2006 to 2014, the sliding door latch actuators are prone to malfunction. This issue can cause the sliding doors not to open and close properly, requiring replacement of the actuators .
  • Oil Pressure Switch (Oil Pressure Sensor): Vehicles equipped with a 3.5-liter engine may experience oil leaks from the oil pressure switch (or oil pressure sensor) over time. The labor cost to replace this part is high due to the need to remove the intake manifold .
  • Air Intake Hose: The air intake hose in some Kia Sedonas can crack and tear over time, allowing unmetered air to enter the engine. This issue can cause hard starting conditions, rough idle, and hesitation under acceleration. Installing a new air intake hose typically resolves the problem .
  • Valve Cover Gaskets: The six-cylinder engines in the Kia Sedona are prone to developing oil leaks from the valve cover gaskets. These gaskets need to be replaced to prevent further oil leaks .
  • Front Sway Bar and Links: The front sway bar and links in some Kia Sedonas can experience rapid wear, causing suspension noises when driving over bumps. These components need to be replaced to restore proper suspension function .
  • Serpentine Belt Tensioner and Idler Pulley Bearings: Between 80,000 and 130,000 miles, the bearings of the serpentine belt tensioner and idler pulleys can become noisy. Replacing these bearings can restore quiet operation .
  • Front Lower Control Arms: In vehicles driven on snowy climates, the front lower control arms can rust and become prone to breaking. Regular inspection and replacement of rusted components can help prevent this issue .
  • Front Wall Bearings: Between 120,000 and 150,000 miles, the front wall bearings in some Kia Sedonas can become noisy. Replacing these bearings can restore quiet operation .
  • Steering Tie Rod Ends: The steering tie rod ends in some Kia Sedonas can experience rapid wear, causing alignment issues and uneven tire wear. Regular inspection and replacement of worn tie rod ends can help maintain proper steering alignment and tire wear .
  • Water Pump: In some Kia Sedonas equipped with 3.5 and 3.8-liter six-cylinder engines, the water pump can develop coolant leaks between 130,000 and 170,000 miles. Replacing the water pump can prevent coolant leaks and maintain proper engine cooling .

These common problems with the Kia Sedona 2006 can help potential buyers make informed decisions when considering the purchase of a used vehicle. Regular inspections and maintenance can help prevent or address these issues, ensuring a safer and more reliable driving experience.

What problems does the Kia Sedona have?

Early models of the Sedona were fitted with a front disc and rear drum braking system that has caused a lot of brake issues. Uneven brake callipers are the cause of the squealing noise, while also causing uneven brake pad wear.

Is Sedona a good car?

Overall Safety Rating (NHTSA)

The Sedona earned top marks from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration in crash testing. It also received good marks from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety but missed out on that Top Safety Pick award due to poor-performing headlamps.

What engine does a 2006 Kia Sedona have?

3.8-liter V-6 engine

Engine/transmission: The Sedona minivan comes with a standard 3.8-liter V-6 engine that develops 244 horsepower at 6,000 revolutions per minute and 253 foot-pounds of torque at 3,500 rpm. The engine is mated to a five-speed automatic transmission that also can be shifted manually.

How many miles does a 2006 Kia Sedona last?

With that said, a well-maintained Kia Sedona can typically last between 200,000 to 300,000 miles. Some owners have even reported reaching up to 273,000 miles without dealing with major problems, and there's confidence that it could reach 300,000 miles with proper care.

Negative 2006 Kia Sedona car reviews

  1. Devon Stiedemann 2024-11-05

Hi there! I just wanted to share my experience with my new 06 Kia Sedona LX. So far, I've only driven it 75 miles and I'm still getting used to it. As a mom who's always on the go, I do miss the extra storage space that my old Caravan had. I also find the fold-down tray between the driver and passenger seats to be a bit of a waste. It's not very practical for storing things like my purse, Kleenex box, and other small items that I like to keep within reach. However, I do appreciate the cargo net that comes with the Sedona. One thing I'm having trouble with is adjusting the seat to fit me properly. I have long legs and a short torso, so it's been a bit of a challenge finding the right position. Lastly, I did notice that the sunglass holder is a bit small. Overall, I'm still getting used to my new car, but I'm excited to see what else it has to offer!

Hi there! I purchased this van back in 2006 and have had to bring it in for service countless times since then. Unfortunately, I've had issues with the under chassis, ball joint, tie rod end, and more. It's been a bit frustrating, especially considering I've only put 30,000 miles on it so far. At 40,000 miles, the oil seal failed (among other things), and now at 50,000 miles, there's a coolant leak. Despite these challenges, I'm hopeful that Kia will continue to work with me to resolve these issues. Thanks for your help!

Our Kia Sedona did not meet our expectations. Despite being covered under warranty, the necessary repairs were not completed. Additionally, the van's heavy weight negatively impacted its ride quality and fuel efficiency. Based on our experience, we cannot recommend this vehicle.

I purchased my Sedona in November 2006, but unfortunately, it has been in the shop 5 times since then. As a customer, I find this unacceptable for a new car. The first issue was a knocking sound when the engine was shut off, which was caused by a flap in the engine that didn't close properly. The second issue was a slider that habitually stuck. The third issue was a blown fuse in the dash that caused my ABS to malfunction. Additionally, the brake light still doesn't shut off properly, and it has been in for repairs twice. Due to the Sedona being a large car assembled with the brakes of a smaller car, it wears through brakes super fast. Unfortunately, my two-year-old car is already on its third set of brakes. It's no wonder that the car comes with a warranty, but I'm now considering other options.

I have owned the vehicle for 5 years and have experienced several issues with it. The back-up sensors have been malfunctioning, the tires have worn out quickly, the doors freeze shut during winter, and the AC has gone out twice. Additionally, the bushings have had to be replaced twice and there have been ignition issues. Despite these challenges, I have been proactive in addressing them and have taken the vehicle to the shop regularly. Although the problem has been difficult to diagnose, I am confident that the technicians will be able to identify and resolve the issue soon.

Positive 2006 Kia Sedona car reviews

  1. Eldon Strosin 2024-11-27

The Sedona has been with us for 2 years now and has proven to be an incredibly reliable and comfortable minivan. With its seats folded, it can carry an impressive amount of cargo, as I experienced firsthand during my recent move. Despite some minor drawbacks such as fuel mileage and cheap plastic interior parts, the Sedona comes with an extensive list of standard equipment, particularly in terms of safety features. It is worth noting that the steep depreciation of this minivan is not something Kia can directly control. Overall, I am confident in recommending the Sedona as a reliable and practical choice for anyone in need of a spacious and comfortable minivan.

You have some great cars! I can tell you're used to vehicles with power and good handling. Even though it's a minivan, the Kia handles really well within its limits and the engine makes good power under all conditions. It's amazing how a 4500 lbs minivan can perform so well. It's great to hear that your whole family loves this vehicle!

  3. Cristina Schumm 2024-11-19

After seeing Kia's serious entry into the luxury minivan market, the Honda and Toyota models, which are also excellent, are starting to look old. The Kia is big, comfortable, tight, powerful and fast with FWD and traction control. It provides a great amount of comfort in a utility-oriented design, from the 3 power doors to the amazing 13 speaker Infinity DVD system with 7.1 surround sound. We're getting close to 24 MPG on the highway and it's not broken in yet. Even our 2-year-old baby loves the ride. Safety ratings top the list. Driving this car in heavy rain feels just as secure as my Subaru Tribeca. Kia looked at the market and cherry-picked the best from all others to make a great van!

  4. Oral Morar 2024-11-13

I purchased my Sedona two months ago and have experienced recurring issues with the sliding doors. Despite visiting the dealer three times, the problem persists. Additionally, the gas mileage displayed on the screen above the mirror is inaccurate, causing the gas light to come on prematurely. These issues require prompt and effective resolution.

  5. Beau Jerde 2024-11-03

I just inherited this van from my father-in-law. It's got everything you want in a minivan. The only things that bother me are the somewhat heavy steering feel and the interior squeaks from the rear of the car. I discovered that the squeaks are coming from the side plastic panels. The airbag light came on, but that's probably an easy fix. Other than those two things, I can't really complain.
