2018 Kia Sedona problems
The Kia Carnival (Korean: 기아 카니발) is a minivan manufactured by Kia since 1998. It was marketed globally under various nameplates, prominently as the Kia Sedona.
The first generation Carnival was introduced in January 1998, and was marketed in a single, short wheelbase version. Second generation models were marketed (2006–2014) in short and long wheelbase variants. A rebadged variant of the second generation was offered in North America as the Hyundai Entourage (2007–2009). Beginning in 2010, the second generation model received updated equipment, including Kia's corporate Tiger Nose grille, as introduced by its then new design chief, Peter Schreyer. Kia introduced its third generation minivan in 2014, solely in a long wheelbase format. The fourth generation was introduced in 2020, when Kia also began using the Carnival nameplate worldwide.
First generation (KV-II; 1998)
The first generation model was manufactured and marketed differently for specific regions, including under a joint venture in the Chinese market with Dongfeng Yueda Kia, as well as the Naza Ria in Malaysia.
In Indonesia and the Philippines, both Carnival/Sedona names were used. Initially introduced as the Carnival in 2001, from 2003 onwards, it was renamed as the Sedona.

Common 2018 Kia Sedona problems
The Kia Sedona, a reliable minivan known for its spacious cabin and affordability, has been reported to have several common problems by its owners. These issues, while not affecting every vehicle, can be significant enough to warrant attention and repair.
One common problem is abnormal startup noises, which can occur in 2002-2012, 2014, and 2016 Kia Sedonas, especially around 90,000 miles. Owners have described these noises as loud knocking sounds that last for a few seconds and become more pronounced as the engine cools down. These symptoms may be due to incorrect oil levels or a bad timing chain tensioner. Kia has acknowledged this issue and has released an improved timing chain tensioner as a replacement.
Another frequently reported problem is starting complications, which can affect 2002-2012, 2014, and 2016 Kia Sedonas. These persistent starting issues may be caused by a defective anti-theft control module or other factors, and they have been reported by many owners.
The 2006 Kia Sedona has been known to have exterior lighting problems, such as headlights and turn signal light issues. Some owners have reported that their headlights may blow or burn out every couple of months, while turn signal lights may malfunction or not work at all. These problems may be accompanied by an illuminated airbag light or abnormal squeaking sounds. While bulb replacements are the most common solution, no other repairs have been reported to resolve this issue.
Premature alternator failure is another problem that has been reported in the 2002 Kia Sedona, with some vehicles experiencing issues around 59,000 miles. Owners have reported drained batteries and the need for multiple battery replacements before diagnosing the problem. Replacing the alternator and belt has been reported as a solution, but using the wrong belt size can cause further problems. If you suspect your vehicle has alternator issues, it's best to contact your mechanic and use direct-fit replacement parts to prevent further problems.
The 2005 Kia Sedona has been reported to have crankshaft position sensor problems, which can cause the vehicle to suddenly stall, jerk, or stop running. These symptoms can be dangerous, as excessive jerking may increase the risk of vehicle control loss, crashes, and collisions. If you suspect your Sedona has a bad crankshaft position sensor, it's best to visit your mechanic immediately to avoid accidents.
While the 2018 Kia Sedona has received a 4.0 out of 5.0 reliability rating on RepairPal and ranks 1st out of 8 other minivans, it's important to be aware of these common issues. Proper maintenance and service can help your Kia Sedona last over 200,000 miles, ensuring a dependable and comfortable driving experience.
Is Kia Sedona 2018 a good car?
Highs Attractive design, smooth V-6 powerplant, excellent safety ratings. Lows Mediocre fuel efficiency, fixed second-row seats, many desirable features only available on higher trims. Verdict The Sedona may not be a class leader, but it's a handsome and affordable option for minivan buyers.
What is the recall on the Kia Sedona 2018?
Summary: Kia Motors America (Kia) is recalling certain 2015-2018 Sedona vehicles equipped with manually-adjusted front passenger seats. Over time, the Occupant Detection System (ODS) wiring harness located underneath the front passenger seat may break from the seat being occupied.
Do Kia Sedona's have transmission problems?
If you don't routinely and always change your fluids at least every 30,000 miles or so, you may find that your Kia Sedona transmission will quickly slip.
Is the Kia Sedona reliable?
The severity of repairs is low, and these issues are less frequent than average, so the Sedona is one of the more reliable vehicles on the road.

ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-08-16
- VIN: KNDMC5C13J6
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: I took the vehicle to get serviced to check the engine light coming on. The Kia dealership stated that the CVVT Assembly and Oil Control Valve had to be replaced. The entire engine would have to be replaced if there was engine damage. The check engine would turn off for a couple of days and then turn back on. When the light would turn off, there was a lack of power, causing a lag in the throttle control.

ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-02-09
- VIN: KNDMC5C19J6
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: While driving at highway speed all the dashboard lights came on and the engine instantly quit. I managed to pull the wheel and coast to the side of the road, which was difficult with no power steering. I tried restarting the engine, but it would not stay running. I had to have the car towed to the mechanic who, upon inspection, found the engine seized due to no oil. An engine replacement was required. All routine maintenance performed on this engine and records were provided. The dealership where I purchased the vehicle refused to replace the engine under warranty, 92330 miles, stating the engine showed "sludge" and was not maintained, this despite my providing maintenance records. This catastrophic engine failure was caused by a manufacturing/engineering defect in the GDI engine causing the engine to burn oil excessively. There was no indication of a problem prior to the failure. The failure at highway speed could have easily caused serious injury or death.
AIR BAGS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-07-16
- VIN: KNDME5C11J6

- Components: AIR BAGS
- Summary: Kia Motors America (Kia) is recalling certain 2017-2019 Sedona, Soul, Soul EV, 2017-2018 Forte, and 2017 Forte Koup vehicles. The Air Bag Control Unit (ACU) cover may contact a memory chip on the printed circuit board and damage the electrical circuit. Circuit damage may result in deactivated air bags that will not deploy in a crash.

If you're in need of a vehicle with three rows of seats on a daily basis, but don't have the budget for a new Suburban, a minivan is the perfect solution. After downsizing from a 2005 Yukon XL to a 2014 Pathfinder, we found that the CUV had its limitations, especially with the arrival of our surprise fourth child. Accessing the third row was a daily nuisance and cargo space was very limited. During our annual Florida trip, we had to stuff our luggage to the gills and even had to attach a cargo platform to the trailer hitch for extra capacity. It was clear that the CUV was not designed to carry a full load of people and stuff. This trip convinced me that it was time to return the lease a bit early and get into a van. Although my wife wasn't quite ready to switch to a van, she eventually admitted that she would consider it if there was a really nice van that looked okay and had all the features she wanted. The Sedona and new Pacifica made her very short list. After just three minutes of walking around the Sedona and marveling at the space and luxury finishes, she was sold before I could even test drive it. Although this model has a bit less room behind the third row than the Odyssey and Sienna, it is still downright cavernous compared to even the biggest CUVs like the Chevy Traverse. Loading the baby is also much easier with sliding doors. These are all things I knew, but Mrs. Cool needed to live with her Pathfinder for a few months before coming around. We went for the SXL Tech 8-seater in dark blue - it's actually a really nice looking vehicle, and not just But I did want that 8th seat, just in case we have an extra passenger (grandma) for a long trip, or perhaps we will want to fold half of the third row to max out cargo space for beach gear next summer. And, I didn't really need the sun roofs, which we never used in the last car, and which they say compromise headroom in the third row where two of our growing young teens reside. Also, I didn't really care about the 'lounge seats'. One of them just has a baby carrier on top, and honestly, there's not enough legroom back there to really utilize the 'ottoman' feature for a teenager, unless he scoots all the way back and steals all the legroom from the third row. Just not something we would ever get any use out of, while the 8th seat has potential uses. Anyway, this is quite simply the most luxurious vehicle we've ever owned. The interior materials are beautiful, and I hope they are durable as well. I'd prefer darker leather, but other long term tests I read say they hold up well. The gadgets are amazing - I've never had many of these features before. Xenon headlights, automatic high beams (this really works!), radar cruise control (again, this actually works great - it can't do stop and go traffic, but it will take you down to about 5 mph and back up again), blind spot monitors, birds-eye-view camera for parking. I don't love the chrome wheels, although they look sharp it's going to be a lot of effort for the boys to keep them clean :) The Bluetooth audio doesn't seem to work with the newest iPhones, you have to plug in to USB to get any sound from your phone. Nor does it read texts as it says. I wish it was Apple CarPlay instead of UVO. But the navigation is decent. I thought Nav was stupid, since that is free on everyone's phone anyway. But having it integrated into the dash is nice, and its directions on the info screen between the gauges driver side is cool. When we get the XM activated, we will see how good it is at traffic.Cooled seats are amazing in Texas! I'm 6'3

Rides and handles great! The drive feels like an SUV. It has decent performance, heated seats (front and back), leather, and easy loading for musical gear with plenty of room. It gets 20 mpg in town and 25 on the interstate. I have owned it for over 2 years with no problems. The dynamic cruise and safety sensors work very well.

Great Van has everything you could want in a new or used van. KIA has one of the nicer vans out there. I hope it holds up mechanically, but overall it seems like a great choice!
-
I really appreciate this automobile, it is well thought out and well-built. It has been a joy to own and operate! The interior style and trim are really nice. Maybe in 10K miles, I will have a different opinion, but for now, I feel like I made a smart choice by buying a Kia. It seems really solid and I also like that JD Powers has been tracking quality metrics and it has trended up and up and is right up there with the top 4 BEST in class. That means Kaizen and Six Sigma. That means serious business. As for updates, not even 3k miles yet and I still love it. Just over 5.5k now and I like the GDI motor. We have been camping a couple of times, and that is one of the reasons we wanted a mini-van. It holds a lot of stuff! It's been over a year now and I still like my van very much. The built-in diagnostics have never indicated any issues and I still like the ride!
-
We bought our van right when it came out. It's been great since! We've had a couple of little issues, such as the rear blind hook and sliding door squeaks, but overall it's been well-built and a great value. When we're driving, it feels like a big SUV, and it has all the amenities of many luxury cars.

It sounds like you were looking for a vehicle with a few more features. This model is definitely budget-friendly, but it may not have all the bells and whistles you were hoping for. Additionally, the gas mileage and road noise may not be ideal for everyone. Thank you for sharing your thoughts with us!
Scot Schamberger 2024-09-13
We've had our 2017 Sedona for almost a year now and have put about 12,000 miles on it. This is our third Sedona, and we've had other vehicles in between. We liked the first two, but they were both the older body style and I never was completely crazy about it. However, when this new style came out, we were excited to give it a try. We really like the body style, but it's hard to compare it to our previous vehicle after driving it for three years. There were a few reasons we went back to Kia after leasing a Toyota Sienna, and I'll discuss those shortly. One of the main reasons we went with the Sedona was the value. We were able to get out the door for less than $37000, including all taxes, fees, and negative equity due to purchasing a year-end model. Compared to other van models, the price was several thousand lower. However, the gas mileage is a bit disappointing. No matter how easy I drive it, I can't get more than 16 around town and 20 on the highway. This to me is unacceptable for a mini-van. If I had it to do over, I would consider other options. In terms of performance, it's not the best. It's a bit sluggish upon acceleration, and the computer system can be glitchy. However, we still enjoy the Sedona and find it reliable for our needs.Although we haven't been stranded yet, I have noticed that the exhaust emits a strong smell of gas and is always thick, even on hot days. I plan to mention this at my oil change tomorrow. On the bright side, the Sedona has a stylish interior and exterior. However, compared to our previous vehicle, the Toyota Sienna, the Sedona has less leg room in the back and significantly less cargo room behind the third row. One of the reasons we chose the Sedona this time around was because the second row seats fold straight up to the front row, providing more cargo room for larger items. In contrast, with the Sienna, the second row seats had to be completely removed, which was no easy task. In terms of quality, it's just typical, as cars are being made with cheaper materials overall, regardless of whether it's a Kia or a Toyota. As for comfort, it seems to be pretty comfortable for everyday commuting, but we have yet to test it on a longer road trip. The only downside is the shortage of packing room, which means we'll have to buy cross bars for the roof rails to carry everything we need. While we wouldn't buy this van again, it's important to note that the Sienna outshines the Sedona by miles, even with the second row inconvenience.

The 2016 Kia Sedona EX I purchased had some issues with oil leakage and overheating. Despite being told that the oil leak was fixed, it was still present the day after I brought it home. Additionally, the engine had a problem with the plastic bolts getting stripped, which allowed air to get in and caused overheating. However, the dealership was able to rectify the situation and allowed me to choose another vehicle. I am confident in their ability to handle any issues that may arise in the future.

Despite having all the options, this Sedona has been the worst car we have ever owned. We put on 17K miles in just over a year, mostly on the highway, but unfortunately, when we went to trade it in at a Kia dealer, we lost over $15K in value. We were hoping to trade back to a Sorento, which we had before trading it in for this vehicle. However, based on our experience with this Sedona, we would not consider owning another one.
