2015 Kia Sedona problems

The Kia Carnival (Korean: 기아 카니발) is a minivan manufactured by Kia since 1998. It was marketed globally under various nameplates, prominently as the Kia Sedona.

The first generation Carnival was introduced in January 1998, and was marketed in a single, short wheelbase version. Second generation models were marketed (2006–2014) in short and long wheelbase variants. A rebadged variant of the second generation was offered in North America as the Hyundai Entourage (2007–2009). Beginning in 2010, the second generation model received updated equipment, including Kia's corporate Tiger Nose grille, as introduced by its then new design chief, Peter Schreyer. Kia introduced its third generation minivan in 2014, solely in a long wheelbase format. The fourth generation was introduced in 2020, when Kia also began using the Carnival nameplate worldwide.

First generation (KV-II; 1998)

The first generation model was manufactured and marketed differently for specific regions, including under a joint venture in the Chinese market with Dongfeng Yueda Kia, as well as the Naza Ria in Malaysia.

In Indonesia and the Philippines, both Carnival/Sedona names were used. Initially introduced as the Carnival in 2001, from 2003 onwards, it was renamed as the Sedona.

Are there any recalls on a 2015 Kia Sedona?

Kia Motors America (Kia) is recalling certain 2015-2018 Sedona vehicles equipped with manually-adjusted front passenger seats. Over time, the Occupant Detection System (ODS) wiring harness located underneath the front passenger seat may break from the seat being occupied.

How many miles will a 2015 Kia Sedona last?

With that said, a well-maintained Kia Sedona can typically last between 200,000 to 300,000 miles. Some owners have even reported reaching up to 273,000 miles without dealing with major problems, and there's confidence that it could reach 300,000 miles with proper care.

Do Kia Sedona have transmission problems?

If you don't routinely and always change your fluids at least every 30,000 miles or so, you may find that your Kia Sedona transmission will quickly slip.

Is the Kia Sedona reliable?

The severity of repairs is low, and these issues are less frequent than average, so the Sedona is one of the more reliable vehicles on the road.

When trying to restart the engine, it immediately seized. There were no warning lights or any indicators before the incident. The engine had been running perfectly fine before with no abnormal oil consumption, overheating problems or any other issues. The car was towed to a shop where the next day a terminal engine failure was diagnosed and we were informed that the engine would have to be replaced for about $8,000. UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-05-10
  • VIN: KNDMC5C1XF6
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: The Driver side rear sliding door motor was not functioning properly. however the sliding door was getting locked and unlocked and can function properly manually . I took the vehicle to the KIA dealership with this recall and extended warranty. they installed a new motor and that motor was not working properly so they went ahead and installed a module for the sliding door to function properly. Later the door gets jammed and the door is not opening and the panel latch is not releasing the sliding door which only happens after they installed the new motor and module. they are asking to pay out of pocket to get it fixed. My understanding after consulting with people that if some part is under warranty and its not functioning properly than it should be fixed by the company which they are refusing to do. two concerns here, one is money that they are asking to get it fixed but the second concern is more of an issue that the door gets jammed in case of emergency the family can not use that door to exit the vehicle. the car sliding door was opening and closing, locked and unlocked properly only problem was the motor. i would appreciate if it can be seen.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-07-18
  • VIN: KNDMC5C11F6
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
  • Summary: July 2021 family of 6 driving on vacation. 3 hours from home car started losing power. Dash lights were coming on and no lights were on at anytime before this. Vehicle had 68,000 miles at the time. Lost power would not accelerate for several minutes and car started smoking under the hood. Coolant was spraying everywhere. Family stuck on side of highway in middle of Pennsylvania and no exit for 15 miles. Had to walk to an unknown home to ask them to fill several bottles of water. Put water in the car. It would run about 5 minutes and overheat again. Finally got to a rest stop. Took to O'Reilly auto parts where we had new thermostat, coolant and fluid and other minor parts installed spending about $700. Drove 15 minutes car broke down again overheating. Trucker mechanic stopped to help but no luck. This was on a Sunday where everything was closed. We could not get a ride or a rental. Continued driving about 3 minutes at a time and constantly adding fluids made it to a hotel. Had to store the van for the week at the hotel. They agreed to keep it while we rented a van and went to Virginia beach. Van had to be towed home. Took to a garage near home where the mechanic said the heads needed replaced. Replaced head gaskets, head bolts. New thermostat, spark plugs, heli coil, coolant, oil and labor. They gave us a discounted rate of $2087.00. Drove home worked for few days and needed towed. Broke down again overheating on a main 3 lane busy road near home. This time repair shop said it would need a while new engine. While we paid $700 in parts on way to vacation. Had $1200 in car rental fees. $2100 in head gaskets shop repair fees. $600 in towing fees. And they were wanting $6000 for a new engine. I sat the van in my driveway for months paying the payments and eventually had to voluntarily repo at 70K miles. Car had 1 owner before us and car was regularly serviced. We had free service and oil for the first year we owned. Now being sued for the balance. Help!!!

STRUCTURE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-04-22
  • VIN: KNDMC5C15F6
  • Components: STRUCTURE
  • Summary: The paint on our white Kia Sedona is starting to flake off exposing the body underneath. Currently it is effecting the front edge of the hood and a much larger area is just under the rear windscreen. The paint in that area is blistering and delaminating at a rather rapid pace. At this point this vehicle is just over 9 years old. This latent defect is going to greatly devalue this vehicle and make it difficult to sell in the future.

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2020-03-20
  • VIN: KNDMB5C13F6
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: My ABS / Traction control light has been on for about 4 years and the diagnostic system gives a warning about it. see picture. I have not fixed it because it just reverts back to regular brakes. However, I know that KIA has had recalls on the ABS / Traction control computer board. but my model year was not included in the recall. My mechanic says the issue is my ABS / Traction control computer board and not a sensor on wheel. I would like my model year to be investigated to see if it can be included in the recall as I plan on keeping this vehicle for many years. Yes, I can make it available for inspection. Safety is loss of anti-lock brakes.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-02-01
  • VIN: KNDME5C19F6
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: After driving 3 miles on 2/1, the engine fan ran after the engine was turned off- which never happens. We called Kia for service but nothing was available for 2 weeks; all Kia dealers were similar. No check engine light was illuminated. My husband popped the hood, saw the coolant cap was open and the coolant fluid level in the normal range (slightly above the minimum line). Closing the cap, he test drove the car. Although driving fine, he took the Sedona to a shop where the hood was again popped- the coolant level was showing now above the max fill line, no coolant had been added; as no fluid was seen by the mechanic and since no check engine light was lit, an appointment was made to bring the car back for a full diagnostic. On 2/2/24, after driving 3 miles and making a turn, I thought I saw smoke. But, it was a rainy day so I thought it was condensation from the concrete. After 1 mile, again while slowing to turn, I thought I saw smoke again; I pulled down the window and smelled burning. At this point I was near my home and the check engine light now turned on. Since there was nowhere to safely stop, I proceeded to the front of my home and summoned my husband. He opened the hood and noticed smoke and extreme heat from the engine, but fortunately no fire. After a couple of days, we decided to tow the car to a shop for diagnostics instead of waiting 2 weeks for Kia- we were told the engine had failed. Stunned by the rapidity of these events, we contacted Kia Customer Support and towed the car to our Kia dealer. I have been told the head bolt stripped causing coolant to mix with oil and the engine to fail; the engine itself will cost $8,148 and, and, with ancillary repairs, the total repair will be over $12000. The car has 125k miles and has been fully serviced at Kia over 9 years, lastly 4 months ago which included coolant service. No check engine light was triggered until smoke and extreme heat were emanating from a blown engine, despite progressing degradation.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-02-11
  • VIN: KNDMB5C16F6
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: Vehicle is regularly maintenenced. Driving down a road it had random loss of power and lost power steering. Was able to restart and it drove fine no check engine lights nothing. Got closer to my destination and my engine light popped at the same time a horrible metal on metal sound came from my rather quiet engine. Immediately lost power and power steering again. Able to coast off the road to safety, upon expecting the vehicle we found a hole and oil leaking out. A rod randomly blew thru the side of the block and there was no indication there was any engine problem beforehand. Cause unknown. I was advised after that these 3.3 motors are becoming know for random disintegration.

SEATS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-12-12
  • Number Of Injuries: 1
  • VIN: KNDMB5C19F6
  • Components: SEATS
  • Summary: We have had multiple seat latches fail on our vehicle. We have attempted to WD40 the mechanism and have ensured there is nothing in the tract but the second row passenger seat as well as the larger drivers side third row seat are not latching onto the tract. The mechanism moved freely but they are not latching into place. I had submitted a safety recall claim for our second row seat a while back as it created a significant safety issue with our child in the seat. Now the rear seat is having a similar problem. The biggest issue is that it will seem that it is latching and then during times of safety concerns (occupied while driving) it unlatches. My son was sitting in the rear and lurched with the latch causing him to bite his tongue. The second row seat has yet to be fixed, and moved around while driving further causing a safety concern.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-05-27
  • VIN: KNDME5C15F6
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: I had regular oil changes performed by Jiffy Lube when I owned the van and have most receipts. In 2022 after the vehicle kept making a whining sound, we realized that it was completely out of oil. I park in our garage and there was never an oil leak of any kind and no dash lights ever came on to indicate a problem. In May 2022 as we were on a 3 hr interstate drive, the engine began knocking. The oil was full but it wouldn't start and had to be towed home. It had 120,000 miles on it. Sims Auto took the engine apart and said it looked like the oil had never been changed because it was caramelized on the inside. I have photos of it. They said that my vehicle at 120k miles with regular maintenance and in really good condition should not have needed a new engine. Our son had this same exact issue with his Kia Optima but it was under a "warranty/recall" and he received a new engine for free. Our local Kia dealership said they were aware of the problem but my Sedona wasn't under the "warranty/recall" so I would have to pay for it. It cost me $9640 to rebuild the engine. I filed a complaint with the BBB against Kia. Kia would not respond and the case was closed. Most of the complaints on the BBB against Kia are due to faulty engine issues.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-01-30
  • VIN: KNDME5C13F6
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: 01/30/2024 while driving our 2015 Kia Sedona SXL idol went high and then it turned off suddenly with no warning at all. We have AUL warranty and had the vehicle towed to the nearest Kia dealership. After they inspected it we were informed that we need a new engine estimated cost of $8300 and that AUL would only cover $2900 and we would be responsible for the remaining $5400 and they need $4000 to start the job. Our van has around145000 miles on it. We will NEVER purchase another KIA or an AUL warranty. We paid good money for the Reserve Coverage from AUL and nowhere in the contract does it state a cap on claim payouts. That should be stated and clearly. Our warranty is good for 40,000 miles and expires at 158000 miles. So, we are within the active range of the warranty. Please don't buy a Kia or a AUL warranty. I have read many complaints on this site about the 2015 engines. They should be recalled. We still owe payments on this van, so we have no choice but to fix it. Lesson learned for sure. Wish Kia would do right and recall these engines. Read through the rest of the engine complaints, you will be shocked. Hope these reviews helps to protect others.

2015 Kia Sedona recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 3 recalls for different components of the 2015 Kia Sedona.

2021-09-17
  • Manufacturer: Kia Motors America
  • Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING:TURN SIGNAL
  • Summary: Kia Motors America (Kia) is recalling certain 2015-2017 Sedona vehicles. The Smart Junction Box (SJB) software logic may not properly interpret the signals received from the multifunction switch, which could cause the turn signal to activate in the opposite direction of what the driver intended.
  • Consequence: A turn signal activating in the opposite direction of what was intended by the driver increases the risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: Dealers will update the SJB software, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed November 12, 2021. Owners may contact Kia customer service at 1-800-333-4542. Kia's number for this recall is SC217.
2019-02-19
  • Manufacturer: Kia Motors America
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:WIRING
  • Summary: Kia Motors America (Kia) is recalling certain 2015-2018 Sedona vehicles equipped with manually-adjusted front passenger seats. Over time, the Occupant Detection System (ODS) wiring harness located underneath the front passenger seat may break from the seat being occupied.
  • Consequence: If a child is in a child seat in the front seat, a broken ODS wiring harness will not prevent the front passenger air bag from deploying in the event of a crash, increasing the risk of injury to the child.
  • Remedy: Kia will notify owners, and dealers will remove the wire harness clip to prevent the wiring harness from breaking. If the harness is found damaged, the front passenger seat cushion will be replaced. These repairs will be performed free of charge. The recall began March 19, 2019. Owners may contact Kia customer service at 1-800-333-4542. Kia's number for this recall is SC175.

  • Consequence: If the door closes on an occupant, there is an increased risk of an injury.
  • Remedy: Kia will notify owners, and dealers will reprogram the PSD module software, free of charge. The recall began on June 18, 2018. Owners may contact Kia customer service at 1-800-333-4542. Kia's number for this recall is SC164.

Negative 2015 Kia Sedona car reviews

  1. Halle Gleason 2024-11-17

The car has a faulty engine that broke down before it reached 10000 miles. I would not recommend purchasing this vehicle, especially if you plan to use it outside of a small town.

  2. Terrence VonRueden 2024-11-16

I had some trouble with my local dealer, but unfortunately I didn't do enough research before choosing them. They suggested that I needed a new engine due to a lack of spark plug maintenance, but I was surprised to learn that head gaskets can actually blow before spark plugs need replacing. I've been trying to get in touch with someone to help me out, but unfortunately I haven't received a response yet. It's frustrating to have to pay for a new engine when I'm still making payments on the car, but I'm hopeful that I can find a solution soon. I'm considering looking into other car brands with more reliable engines, but I'm still open to finding a solution with KIA. I appreciate any help that can be provided. Thank you.

  3. Allan Sipes 2024-08-18

Transmission has been replaced twice and the tires have been damaged as well. I have owned 5 Kias before, but this time my experience has been completely different. This is my last Kia.

  4. Johnny Turner 2024-07-08

I really enjoy driving our van. The seat arrangement and storage are unique compared to Chrysler's/Dodge's 'Stow-N'Go'. However, the closest Kia dealership is an hour away and they do not offer shuttle service or loaner cars. On the bright side, regular maintenance can be done at any shop. Unfortunately, there are some vehicle specific issues, such as the non-latching sliding doors, software upgrade for anti-theft, or airbag light which is on, that cannot be addressed as the dealership states that it would take a whole day to service. Despite these issues, I would still like to buy another one because of the comfort of riding.

  5. Alan Ebert 2024-06-03

The vehicle was good until about 88k. I started hearing a low growl/grind at low speeds, which turned out to be the transmission low gear. The dealership had recommended a 60k transmission service, but I guess I just got a bad transmission. I am having a Kia remanned transmission put in, but I am disappointed with my experience and doubt I will ever buy another Kia. However, I understand that every car brand can have its issues and this is just my personal experience.

Positive 2015 Kia Sedona car reviews

  1. Walton Langworth 2024-11-01

Hey there! I wanted to let you know that there's a tech bulletin about computers draining the battery, but don't worry, it's an easy fix that your dealer can take care of. I've only seen one minor recall, but it didn't affect my car. Hope this helps!

  2. Ralph Schmidt 2024-08-19

Just recently purchased a used 2015 Kia Sedona and we are in love. It's such a smooth, classy ride, and it's plenty spacious with enough power and a beautiful interior. We're very happy!

  3. Oliver Parker 2024-08-11

We prioritize safety when purchasing vehicles, which is why we only choose those with the highest safety rating by the IIHS. The 2015 Kia Sedona not only meets this requirement, but it also exceeded it and received the Top Safety Pick. We have consistently serviced the vehicle at the dealership according to the maintenance schedule. Although the Sedona was purchased new 3 years ago with around 160,000 miles on it, it still runs great with only 30,000 miles added. Our favorite features include its comfort, reliability, and spaciousness. We also appreciate its sleek appearance and the fact that the sliding door windows roll down all the way. While we acknowledge that there are some drawbacks, such as the thin dealership network and lack of an engine immobilizer, we are still satisfied with our purchase. The Sedona's fuel mileage is rated at 18/24 MPG, but we have been able to achieve around 20/26 MPG in real-life driving. Although there is some 'clanking' noise from the rear when driving over bumps, we are willing to overlook this minor issue. Overall, we are happy with our Sedona and its priority on comfort, which meets our needs perfectly.

The engine wiring harness malfunctioned and caused significant damage to the engine.

Leasing for 3 years, right now near end of model year Kia is giving incentives to lease. Before you go, make sure to take advantage of these incentives. It's a shame that the 8-passenger SXL doesn't come with the sunroof that you wanted, especially considering the price. It's only available on the 7 seater, which doesn't make sense. However, the seats in the back are comfortable for the kids. Although my wife has trouble finding a comfortable seating position, she feels that her old Odyssey seat was better. The power is supposed to be the same as the Odyssey, but it feels a bit sluggish to accelerate. The surround view camera is only available on the highest level, but it's on par with luxury car makes like Infiniti. Let me know if you have any questions!
