2009 Kia Sedona problems

The Kia Carnival (Korean: 기아 카니발) is a minivan manufactured by Kia since 1998. It was marketed globally under various nameplates, prominently as the Kia Sedona.

The first generation Carnival was introduced in January 1998, and was marketed in a single, short wheelbase version. Second generation models were marketed (2006–2014) in short and long wheelbase variants. A rebadged variant of the second generation was offered in North America as the Hyundai Entourage (2007–2009). Beginning in 2010, the second generation model received updated equipment, including Kia's corporate Tiger Nose grille, as introduced by its then new design chief, Peter Schreyer. Kia introduced its third generation minivan in 2014, solely in a long wheelbase format. The fourth generation was introduced in 2020, when Kia also began using the Carnival nameplate worldwide.

First generation (KV-II; 1998)

The first generation model was manufactured and marketed differently for specific regions, including under a joint venture in the Chinese market with Dongfeng Yueda Kia, as well as the Naza Ria in Malaysia.

In Indonesia and the Philippines, both Carnival/Sedona names were used. Initially introduced as the Carnival in 2001, from 2003 onwards, it was renamed as the Sedona.

Common 2009 Kia Sedona problems

The Kia Sedona, produced from 1998 to 2022, was a significant model in the minivan segment for Kia. While generally considered a reliable vehicle, specific years have been plagued with issues, including recalls and customer complaints. For the 2009 Kia Sedona, the following are common problems reported by owners:

  1. Engine Problems: Engine issues are prevalent in the 2009 Kia Sedona, with reports of oil leaks, misfiring, and coolant leaks. The most common engine problem is oil leaks from the valve cover gaskets in the six-cylinder engines. These leaks can lead to engine damage if not addressed promptly. Additionally, cracked ignition coils can cause misfiring, which, if left unresolved, can damage the catalytic converter. Coolant leaks from the water pump are also reported between 130,000 and 170,000 miles.
  2. Sliding Door Latch Actuators: In some 2009 Kia Sedonas, the sliding door latch actuators may malfunction, causing the sliding doors to not open or close properly. This issue requires replacement of the faulty actuators.
  3. Air Intake Hose Cracks: The air intake hose in some 2009 Kia Sedonas is prone to cracking and tearing over time, leading to unmetered air entering the engine. This issue can cause hard starting conditions, rough idle, and hesitation under acceleration, and is resolved by installing a new air intake hose.
  4. Front Sway Bar and Links: The front sway bar and links in some 2009 Kia Sedonas are prone to rapid wear, causing suspension noises when driving over bumps. These components need to be replaced to resolve the issue.
  5. Brake Issues: Early models of the 2009 Kia Sedona, particularly those with a front disc and rear drum braking system, have experienced brake issues, including uneven brake calliper wear and squealing noises. These issues are resolved by installing a new brake system, which can be ordered directly from Kia.
  6. Power Steering Pipes: Leaking power steering pipes can cause drops of red oil on the ground underneath the vehicle. This issue is resolved by replacing the power steering pipes.
  7. Air Conditioning System: The condenser is known for failing in the 2009 Kia Sedona, leading to issues with the air conditioning system. A faulty condenser can result in the air conditioning only working on one or a few settings, but not all. This issue is resolved by replacing the condenser.
  8. Throttle Position Sensor: A faulty throttle position sensor can cause engine idling issues and the appearance of the engine management warning light on the dashboard. This issue is resolved by replacing the throttle position sensor.
  9. Fuel Pump Failure: The fuel pump in the 2009 Kia Sedona can fail, leading to engine performance issues. This issue is resolved by replacing the fuel pump.

While these issues are common, they do not necessarily affect all 2009 Kia Sedonas. Regular maintenance and timely repairs can help mitigate these problems and ensure the vehicle's longevity.

TODAY WHEN WE WENT TO FILL GAS, WE FOUND THAT THE GAS TANK RELEASE BUTTON IS ALSO NOT WORKING. FORTUNATELY THE MECHANIC AT THE PUMP SHOWED US A WAY OF MANUALLY RELEASING THE CAP FROM THE TRUNK OF THE VAN WHICH ENABLED US TO FILL GAS TODAY. THIS IS A SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE: NOT BEING ABLE TO OPEN THE GAS TANK COVER THE REGULAR WAY. NEITHER THE MECHANIC TODAY NOR ANOTHER MECHANIC WHO I HAVE USED FOR THE PAST 25 YEARS COULD FIGURE OUT WHAT IS WRONG ELECTRICALLY. THEY CHECKED THE FUSES AND RAN DIAGNOSTICS BUT NOTHING STOOD OUT.

  • Manufacturer: Kia Motors Corporation
  • Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING:BRAKE LIGHTS:SWITCH
  • Summary: Kia Motors Corporation (Kia) is recalling certain model year 2007-2010 Rondo, model year 2007-2011 Sedona, Sorento and Sportage, model year 2010-2011 Soul, model year 2008-2011 Optima, model year 2010 Forte, model year 2007-2009 Amanti, and model year 2009 Borrego vehicles. Originally, in April 2013, Kia recalled 623,658 model year 2007-2010 Rondo and Sportage, model year 2007-2011 Sorento, model year 2007 Sedona, model year 2010-2011 Soul, and model year 2011 Optima vehicles. In September 2013, Kia informed the agency that it was adding an additional 356,719 vehicles to this campaign. The total number of vehicles being recalled is now 980,377. In the affected vehicles, the stop lamp switch may malfunction. A malfunctioning stop lamp switch may cause the brake lights to not illuminate when the brake pedal is depressed or may cause an inability to deactivate the cruise control by depressing the brake pedal. Additionally, a malfunctioning stop lamp switch may also result in intermittent operation of the push-button start feature, affect the operation of the brake-transmission shift interlock feature preventing the shifter from being moved out of the PARK position and cause the Electronic Stability Control (ESC) malfunction light to illuminate.
  • Consequence: Failure to illuminate the stop lamps during braking or inability to disengage the cruise control could increase the risk of a crash. Additionally, when the ignition is in the 'ON' position, the transmission shifter may be able to be moved out of PARK without first applying the brake. This may lead to unintentional movement of the car which may increase the risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: Kia will send an interim notification to owners in May 2013. When parts are available, owners will receive a second notification and dealers will replace the stop lamp switch, free of charge. Owners may contact Kia at 1-800-333-4542. Kia's recall campaign number is SC098.

Negative 2009 Kia Sedona car reviews

  1. Morton Treutel 2024-08-02

Sedona has most of the equipment that is expected. It can haul a lot of stuff and has a lot of room. However, there is a vibration in the front end that makes this vehicle a big disappointment. Although the tires have all been changed out, the vibration remains. As a friendly heads up, it may be worth contacting KIA to address this issue, as it could impact customer retention. Thank you for bringing this to our attention!

  2. Lucas Crooks 2024-03-14

I experienced significant issues with my car, including frequent failure to start and problems with the power sliding doors. Despite multiple visits to the service department, the issues were not resolved. However, I was able to successfully apply for the New York state lemon law and receive compensation. The radio also required attention early on. Overall, my experience with the car was challenging, but I was able to navigate the situation and find a resolution.

The ride may feel a bit rigid and the cabin can be quite noisy, but overall it is a decent and practical vehicle. It's understandable that the noise can be a bit distracting, but it's worth considering the other positive aspects of the car as well.

The Sedona minivan is a great option for families, with a lower initial cost compared to its competitors. Additionally, the 10-year/100K warranty provides added peace of mind for those concerned about long-term reliability. The Sedona boasts a very powerful engine and smooth drive, making it a functional and enjoyable vehicle. With some negotiation, you can purchase a new 2008 LX for under $16K. As someone who has driven Honda vehicles for years, I was pleasantly surprised by the Sedona's value and couldn't pass up the opportunity to save money. In fact, I would need to spend $7K in repairs to break even with purchasing a Honda or Toyota. Overall, the Sedona is a great value for families in need of a reliable and affordable minivan.

Positive 2009 Kia Sedona car reviews

We chose the Kia over other brands based on maintenance reviews. Our 2008 Sedona, which we bought used, is a great van with plenty of space and comfort for our family. We recently took a road trip of 3,000 miles and it was a wonderful experience. We got 25 mpg on the road and the van was easy to drive with plenty of pep. The seats are very adjustable and provide good support. There is also lots of storage in the cabin and behind the two back seats. The air conditioning and heating in the van work very well and the windows provide plenty of fresh air. Overall, we are very happy with our Kia Sedona and would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a family-friendly vehicle.

I purchased the Sedona mostly because of its affordable price. However, after comparison shopping other vans and driving it for a few months, I can confidently say that it is the best option out there. The new Chrysler van's appearance is not appealing, and you have to spend a lot of money to get a competitive powertrain. The Toyota is priced too high, the Nissan has had some issues, and the local Honda dealerships do not have good reputations. Nevertheless, the Sedona has everything you need and more. It even gets better mileage than my previous van. It is undoubtedly the best value in the industry.

I previously owned 3 Chrysler Mini Vans, but after experiencing 5 transmission issues, I decided it was time for a change. The 5K rebate was too good to pass up, so I decided to purchase a new van. So far, I am very happy with my purchase. Although many have reported issues with mileage, I have not experienced any problems with mine yet (2000 miles). In fact, I am getting 18 miles per gallon in the city and 24-25 miles per gallon on the thruway, which is better than I expected.

We purchased the car in the South and drove it back to the Midwest. The first tankful in the city gave us 17 MPG, while the next three on the highway gave us 22-23 MPG. We expect the fuel efficiency to improve even more. The handling, comfort, and performance of the car exceeded our expectations. The seats are firm yet supportive, and after driving 500 miles in one day, we were not fatigued. The car has good visibility, and the SWB is the perfect length for our grandkids. The Sedona is rated as the safest minivan of all, which was a key factor in our purchase. The price was also a leading factor, as similar-sized V6 Toyotas, Hondas (Sienna, Pilot, RAV4) were out the door in the low 20s, while ours was in the lower teens. We believe that we made a great buy with this quality and safe vehicle, and we feel very confident driving it. The ride quality and feel are better than its MSRP, and we have already driven 1,700 miles.

We've been driving our new vehicle for over a month and I'm thrilled to say that our '08 Kia Sedona EX (with power doors/power gate) has been a fantastic purchase. We managed to get a great deal on it, paying only 18.7K for a 2008 model. It's been working perfectly and drives like a dream. Plus, it gets decent highway gas mileage (23.5 or better hwy). The middle seats are incredibly comfortable, much better than stow-n-go seats. I also appreciate that the middle windows roll down, although I know that's a common feature in most minivans these days. The only downside is that the driver's seat armrest is a bit too low for my liking. I can tilt it up and use it, but I wish I could raise the whole armrest. The same goes for the front passenger armrest. Overall, though, we're extremely happy with our purchase.
