2017 Kia Sedona problems
The Kia Carnival (Korean: 기아 카니발) is a minivan manufactured by Kia since 1998. It was marketed globally under various nameplates, prominently as the Kia Sedona.
The first generation Carnival was introduced in January 1998, and was marketed in a single, short wheelbase version. Second generation models were marketed (2006–2014) in short and long wheelbase variants. A rebadged variant of the second generation was offered in North America as the Hyundai Entourage (2007–2009). Beginning in 2010, the second generation model received updated equipment, including Kia's corporate Tiger Nose grille, as introduced by its then new design chief, Peter Schreyer. Kia introduced its third generation minivan in 2014, solely in a long wheelbase format. The fourth generation was introduced in 2020, when Kia also began using the Carnival nameplate worldwide.
First generation (KV-II; 1998)
The first generation model was manufactured and marketed differently for specific regions, including under a joint venture in the Chinese market with Dongfeng Yueda Kia, as well as the Naza Ria in Malaysia.
In Indonesia and the Philippines, both Carnival/Sedona names were used. Initially introduced as the Carnival in 2001, from 2003 onwards, it was renamed as the Sedona.

Common 2017 Kia Sedona problems
Based on complaints from owners of the Kia Sedona 2017, several common problems have been reported. Here is a detailed list of these issues:
- Front Passenger Occupant Sensor Wiring Harness: Many 2015 to 2018 models have been recalled due to the front passenger occupant sensor wiring harness being prone to breaking. This can cause the airbag light to illuminate on the dashboard and the front passenger airbag not to deploy during a front collision.
- Combination Switch Malfunction: Some earlier models of the third-generation Kia Sedona are prone to a malfunction in the combination switch. This can cause the right turn signal to illuminate when selecting the left signal and, at times, the headlights may turn off momentarily when using the turn signals.
- Power Sliding Door Motor Failure: The power sliding door motors are reported to experience premature failure. This issue can lead to the sliding doors only being able to open and close manually.
- Soy-Based Coated Electrical Wires: Electrical wires coated with soy-based material are susceptible to being chewed by rodents, resulting in various electrical problems within the vehicle.
- Climate Control Module Malfunction: Over time, the climate control module in the Kia Sedona 2017 is prone to malfunction and may require replacement to restore proper functionality.
- Rear Tailgate Latch Actuator Motor: The rear tailgate latch actuator motor in some minivans tends to malfunction prematurely, causing issues with opening and closing the tailgate.
- Front Brake Rotors Warping: Front brake rotors in certain minivans are prone to warping, leading to shaking of the vehicle when braking.
- Front Sway Bar Links Wear: The front sway bar links tend to experience premature wear, resulting in rattling noises when driving on uneven roads or over bumps.
- Front Lower Control Arm Bushings Wear: Front lower control arm bushings are known to experience abnormal wear, causing alignment issues and uneven tire wear.
- Alternator Charging Issues: The alternator in some Kia Sedona minivans may stop charging between 100,000 and 150,000 miles, leading to potential electrical system problems.
These reported problems highlight various issues that owners of the Kia Sedona 2017 have faced, ranging from safety concerns to electrical and mechanical failures. Addressing these issues promptly and through proper maintenance can help mitigate potential risks and ensure the longevity of the vehicle.

ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-12-16
- VIN: KNDMB5C19H6
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: My engine seized. When I took it to my mechanic they stated it was due to low compression and that Kia engines were known for this issue. He suggested I take it to a Kia dealer to have them replace the engine. I took it and I was denied the replacement. I did some research and found that this issue was in fact very popular among Kia owners. Some expressing their engines actually ignited. I also found there was a class-action lawsuit against Kia for this exact issue. I noticed all Kia models were included in the suit except for the Sedona. During my research I found a mass of Sedona owners who had the same compression issues. It baffles me why my car wasn't included when it has the exact isdues as the other models made by the same manufacturer. I would like to file a complaint in hopes that other Sedona owners have done the same, and we can bring light to this issue, and possibly a solution.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-07-18
- VIN: KNDMB5C17H6
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: I am writing to file a formal complaint regarding a serious issue my vehicle has been unusable since July due to a defective AC control head. I initially took my vehicle to an authorized dealership, and they informed me that the part required is on national back order. After an extensive search, they located the part at a dealership in California, but the order was canceled. I was then told that many replacement control heads are being returned as defective, leaving me without a functioning vehicle. The dealership has indicated that the back order could take anywhere from one week to three years, which is an unacceptable and indefinite delay. I am currently unable to use my vehicle because temperatures in the Phoenix metro area average between 105+ degrees during this time of year. As a mother of four small children, it is unsafe and unreasonable to transport them in such extreme heat without a working air conditioning system. The lack of resolution has placed a significant burden on my family’s daily life. I am requesting immediate attention to this matter, as the situation is now impacting our safety and well-being. The widespread issue with defective parts and lack of availability needs to be investigated and addressed promptly. Thank you for your consideration of this matter. I hope that with your involvement, a timely resolution can be reached or, at the very least, clear communication regarding the availability of the required part can be provided.

We just hit 100k…. Within two days of those opinions, engine seized while I was driving. No injuries but a car this new with no known issues this is not ok. Zero lights came on the dashboard. No check engine light, nothing. It’s been in a shop for over a month while we wait for a new engine to come in. Would never ever buy another Kia. ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-06-27
- VIN: KNDMB5C15H6
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: The engine seized suddenly and put my family in danger. There are recalls on other kia engines and it is clearly an issue but KIA is not taking responsibility for it and has told us we must pay 13K for a new engine or they will give us $500 to "take it off our hands" --- this is wrong. We have kept the vehicle well-maintained and have all the records to prove this. It has just over 100,000 miles on it and we still owe money on it. KIA is putting families in danger but not acknowledging that there is a possibility of engine failure in the Sedona van. There have likely been deaths and injury as a result of this and yet, nothing is being done! Please hold KIA accountable and insist they do a nationwide recall for all engines that are affected by this defect.
AIR BAGS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-05-16
- VIN: KNDMC5C19H6

It was towed to a Kia dealership, and I have been told I need a new engine, at the cost of $10, 750. The van has 135,000 miles on it. This van has the 3.3-liter V6 Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI) Lambda Engine. The repair report from Kia states that it "needs a long block due to engine has bottom end noise and is seize up".

I started to research this issue and found that this is a well known defect in the 3.3L lambda 2. Why isn’t something being done about this? Completely unsafe!
AIR BAGS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-08-01
- VIN: KNDMB5C10H6
- Components: AIR BAGS
- Summary: My airbag light went on, without it having been deployed at all. I took it to the dealership and they said there was a problem with the circuitry in which they couldn't guarantee that it would deploy in a possible accident. I also noticed that there is a recall out for some vehicles of my same make/model/year with an airbag recall out that mentions this same exact problem, except that my vehicle VIN number doesn't come up as it being a problem, so the dealership will not fix the problem unless I pay for it.

POWER TRAIN,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE PROBLEM

However, this is the 2nd time we are replacing the piece in 3months (not the o-ring). We did that. And spent $900 on it. As soon as we drove it 11miles home, there was oil and coolant leaking again. Took it right back. And there was fluid in the engine. Guy believes it's the head gasket. Out car isn't running. We don't know if we should replace, or junk it and have a loss of money. We are so frustrated. We have 125,000 miles. There were no warnings, no lights, just us noticing the coolant leaking, and the reservoir being full. We have pictures and have taken it to multiple mechanics and dealers.
VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2019-08-15
- VIN: KNDMA5C16H6
- Components: VISIBILITY/WIPER
- Summary: Since the same year I bought my 2017 kia Sedona L which was [XXX], from Orlando Kia North, Longwood florida; I have been having an electrical safety issue. The wipers turn on by themselves front and rear and I can't turn them off. In addition to this problem I've been having for almost 5 years now, the highbeam will also at different times do the same thing, turn on by itself. My headlights have also turned off on one or two occasions as well. In around August of 2019 I first took my vehicle in with the complaint and several times afterwards. The first 2 times they couldn't duplicate the issue so nothing was done. After that they said they found a short and replaced the clock spring then after that it was a short in the multifunction switch. Neither of these replacements have resolved the issue. I believe the owner before me had the same problem and this is the reason why they traded the vehicle and Kia never fixed the problem and just resold it as is, without notifying me of the issue. Also in this time period I started noticing water getting into the rear gate. On [XXX] the grommet was replaced, I took it back again and the washer line was replaced. Til today I still have the same problem. I gave up hope with Kia after speaking to supervisors and managers, I called their headquarters spoke with Melissa Hyatt I was given a case # which I still have on file, but all she did was redirect me back to the dealership. I also filed a complaint with you (NHTSA) and still have my complaint # 11337324 within my files, but didn't receive any response. I am still paying for this vehicle and would love some assistance with my safety problems that many others seem to be dealing with as I have noticed the same complaint for this same vehicle have been submitted. Look forward to hearing from someone soon. Thank you and sorry for such the long explanation. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-06-01
- VIN: KNDMC5C13H6
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: Power Doors on both sides of the vehicle do not latch securely. One out of every 25 attempts the door MAY latch properly. On some occasions you can see from outside of the car that the doors are not completely shut. The warning alarm goes off indicating that the doors are not securely latched. I have brought the vehicle to a local KIA dealership which informed me that there was a recall on the latching system. The part #'s outlined in the recall match the defective parts on my vehicle, however the dealership is claiming that its something else and refused to cover the defective latch repairs. The dealer has also not returned any of my phone calls since. This has been going on for nearly a year with no resolution and I am concerned for my passengers safety.

This vehicle has been problem-free. I bought it because of the 100,000mi warranty, but it looks like I won't be needing it.
-
A few weeks ago, we were in an accident that could have been fatal or caused severe injuries. However, thanks to this car, we were able to walk away with only minor injuries. Looking at the damage, I am still shocked at how lucky we were.

I put 100K trouble-free miles on my 2012 and it looked and ran just like new. Recently, I got the bug for a newer car and found a great deal on a 2016 LX with only 20K miles and all the features I missed. Now, with 55K miles and new tires, it handles just as well and is just as reliable as my 2012 was. I've been tracking my mileage since I've owned it and I'm consistently getting 24 mpg in urban driving. The ride is car-like and the heated seats are perfect for my really bad back. I absolutely love it! Update: I now have 65K miles on it and everything is still the same. The replacement Goodyear tires have made the ride quieter and have awesome grip in the wet. My gas mileage hasn't changed. I may just keep this car forever!

It's great to hear that you've had a positive experience with your vehicle! It's impressive that it can hold 8 people comfortably while still providing some storage space behind the rear seat. It's also great to hear that you haven't had any major problems with it over the past 3+ years. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

Buying this vehicle involved two of the dealer's salespeople, Luis Vazquez and Sam Hackett. Luis was our first contact and he showed us the vehicle, but due to medical problems, he asked us to complete the sale with Sam. Both of these gentlemen were very professional and answered all of our questions. The sale was completed with no problems. This was a great experience in buying a newer vehicle. I highly recommend this dealership.

We owned our Sedona for a month but unfortunately, we quickly grew tired of it and eventually replaced it. Initially, we purchased it because it was more current than the Grand Caravan and more affordable, better driving, with a better second row solution than the Odyssey. However, we later discovered some important missing safety features that we regretted not checking for, such as NO third row LATCH connectors and no daytime running lights (DRLs). It was disappointing to find out that DRLs were not standard on the Sedona, despite being standard on most cars today. The dealer even tried to lie to us and tell us that parking lights were DRLs. It was frustrating to find out that a FAMILY van was missing third row latch connectors, especially when even the aging Grand Caravan has them as standard. We had the LX model with the Convenience Package, which was not a cheap van, yet it had a very small center 4.3

We take pride in the quality of our vehicles and stand behind their performance. We recommend bringing your van to one of our certified service centers for a thorough inspection and any necessary repairs. Thank you for bringing this to our attention.

The 2016 Kia Sedona EX I purchased had some issues with oil leakage and overheating. Despite being told that the oil leak was fixed, it was still present the day after I brought it home. Additionally, the engine had a problem with the plastic bolts getting stripped, which allowed air to get in and caused overheating. However, the dealership was able to rectify the situation and allowed me to choose another vehicle. I am confident in their ability to handle any issues that may arise in the future.

It sounds like you were looking for a vehicle with a few more features. This model is definitely budget-friendly, but it may not have all the bells and whistles you were hoping for. Additionally, the gas mileage and road noise may not be ideal for everyone. Thank you for sharing your thoughts with us!

We've had our 2017 Sedona for almost a year now and have put about 12,000 miles on it. This is our third Sedona, and we've had other vehicles in between. We liked the first two, but they were both the older body style and I never was completely crazy about it. However, when this new style came out, we were excited to give it a try. We really like the body style, but it's hard to love overall after driving the Sienna for three years. There were a few reasons we went back to Kia after that lease and I'll discuss those shortly. One of the main reasons we went with the Sedona was the value. With a couple thousand negative equity in our trade for it, we got out the door for less than $37000 including all taxes, fees and negative equity due to purchasing a year end model. So, we saved about $6000 by going for the 2017 in the beginning of 2018. Compared to the Sienna and other van models, the price was several thousand lower. However, I do have one complaint with the Sedona, and that is the gas mileage. No matter how easy I drive it, I can't get more than 16 around town and 20 on the highway. This to me is unacceptable for a mini van. If I had it to do over, I wouldn't buy it just to save a couple thousand on purchase price. Over time, I definitely pay more for gas. In terms of performance, it's not the best. It's a bit sluggish upon acceleration, and the computer system can be a bit glitchy. However, I just deal with it because I know the service department will take care of any issues. Comparing to the Sienna, it's not quite as good, but it's still a great vehicle. We've had no major issues with reliability so far.undefined
