2003 Kia Sedona problems
The Kia Carnival (Korean: 기아 카니발) is a minivan manufactured by Kia since 1998. It was marketed globally under various nameplates, prominently as the Kia Sedona.
The first generation Carnival was introduced in January 1998, and was marketed in a single, short wheelbase version. Second generation models were marketed (2006–2014) in short and long wheelbase variants. A rebadged variant of the second generation was offered in North America as the Hyundai Entourage (2007–2009). Beginning in 2010, the second generation model received updated equipment, including Kia's corporate Tiger Nose grille, as introduced by its then new design chief, Peter Schreyer. Kia introduced its third generation minivan in 2014, solely in a long wheelbase format. The fourth generation was introduced in 2020, when Kia also began using the Carnival nameplate worldwide.
First generation (KV-II; 1998)
The first generation model was manufactured and marketed differently for specific regions, including under a joint venture in the Chinese market with Dongfeng Yueda Kia, as well as the Naza Ria in Malaysia.
In Indonesia and the Philippines, both Carnival/Sedona names were used. Initially introduced as the Carnival in 2001, from 2003 onwards, it was renamed as the Sedona.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2014-09-01
- VIN: KNDUP131336
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE
- Summary: I PURCHASED THE VEHICLE USED. IT DROVE JUST FINE FOR THE FIRST SEVERAL MONTHS, BUT EVENTUALLY IT WOULD START SPUTTERING LIKE IT WAS OUT OF GAS WHEN IT ACTUALLY HAD GAS IN THE VEHICLE. EVENTUALLY, IT CAME TO A POINT WHEN IT WOULD RUN WHEN IT WANTED TO AND STALL WHEN IT WANTED TO. I TOOK IT TO A SERVICE STATION TO GET IT FIXED AND THEY COULD NOT RECREATE THE PROBLEM TO FIX IT. THEY GAVE ME A COUPLE OF OPTIONS WHAT IT COULD BE, BUT TOLD ME THAT THEY WERE ONLY 75% SURE AND IT WAS GOING TO COST NEARLY $1000 TO FIX. WELL, I DIDN'T HAVE $1000 TO FIX SOME PARTS THAT THEY ARE ONLY 75% SURE ABOUT. I CONTINUED TO DRIVE IT IN TOWN AND IT CONTINUED TO STALL AND DRIVE AS IT PLEASED. AT THIS POINT, IT ACTS LIKE IT WANTS TO TURNOVER, BUT WON'T START. I HAVE RESEARCHED AND FOUND THAT I AM NOT THE ONLY PERSON WITH THIS VEHICLE PROBLEM. CAN'T SOMETHING BE DONE?

- Consequence: THIS CAN CAUSE THE CABLE TO STICK, THUS PREVENTING THE ENGINE FROM RETURNING TO IDLE AND CAUSING THE VEHICLE TO MAINTAIN SPEED OR ACCELERATE. SUCH AN EVENT CAN OCCUR WITHOUT WARNING AND COULD CAUSE A CRASH.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL MODIFY A PROTECTIVE SLEEVE AROUND THE THROTTLE CABLE. THE RECALL BEGAN ON AUGUST 15, 2005. OWNERS MAY CONTACT KIA AT 1-800-333-4542.
- Manufacturer: KIA MOTORS AMERICA, INC.
- Components: WHEELS
- Summary: ON CERTAIN MINI VANS EQUIPPED WITH ALLOY WHEELS, MOISTURE CAN ACCUMULATE AROUND THE REAR HUB CAPS CAUSING DAMAGE TO THE OUTER WHEEL BEARING.
- Consequence: WHEEL BEARING FAILURE MAY OCCUR WITHOUT WARNING WHICH COULD RESULT IN A CRASH.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE REAR HUB CAPS FREE OF CHARGE. UPON INSPECTION, SOME VEHICLES WILL ALSO REQUIRE REPLACEMENT OF THE REAR OUTER BEARINGS AND/OR HUB ASSEMBLY. THE RECALL BEGAN ON JUNE 13, 2005. OWNERS MAY CONTACT KIA AT 1-800-333-4542.
- Manufacturer: KIA MOTORS AMERICA, INC.
- Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL:CABLES
- Summary: ON CERTAIN MINI VANS, DURING ASSEMBLY, THE THROTTLE CABLE WOULD TWIST ITSELF OUT OF POSITION.
- Consequence: THIS CAN PERMIT THE CABLE TO BE HUNG UP, WHICH COULD RESULT IN A CRASH.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE THROTTLE CABLE FREE OF CHARGE. VEHICLES PRODUCED FROM MARCH 20, 2001 THROUGH NOVEMBER 7, 2001 WILL HAVE A GUIDE CLIP INSTALLED ON THE THROTTLE BODY ASSEMBLY IN ORDER TO ENSURE THAT THE TENSION FORCE CABLE DOES NOT MOVE OUT OF POSITION. VEHICLES MANUFACTURED BEGINNING ON NOVEMBER 8, 2001, ALREADY HAVE THE EXTENDED GUIDE, WHICH ACCOMPLISHES THE SAME OBJECTIVE. THE RECALL BEGAN MARCH 21, 2005. OWNERS MAY CONTACT KIA AT 1-800-333-4542.

I've owned the Sedona for about a year now and have put 18000 miles on it. I must say, it's been a pleasure to drive and ride in. The dealer service has been excellent and I haven't had any mechanical problems. Overall, I think it's a great value for the money.
-
We purchased our 2003 Kia Sedona last year from the original owners who hardly drove it. At the time of purchase, the van only had 75K miles on it. In just one year, we have put on 26K miles! The car has been fantastic for us and has been all over the place due to my husband's frequent work travels. It gets great highway gas mileage, although it may not be the best for going from town to town since we live in a rural area. We have not experienced any major issues with the car and are taking it in for general maintenance expected at 100K, such as plugs and wires, as it is running a bit rough. However, given the way we drive, this is to be expected. I absolutely love the V6 engine - it really packs a punch! Overall, we are thrilled with our mini-van!
-
We're so glad to hear that you've enjoyed driving this vehicle! It sounds like it's been handling the hills where you live with ease, and the comfortable seats and ample head and leg room have made for a smooth ride. Thank you for sharing your experience with us!
-
This is a great van to drive and have fun with the kids. I love all the cup holders and places to put their toys.
-
We've had this car for nearly two months now and we absolutely love it!

The starter going within the first week should have been a sign. After 5 years and 80,000 miles, I have unfortunately experienced 3 broken handles that will cost at least $500 each to fix. The turning radius is not as good as the caravans I've had in the past, and I do miss the extra 18 inches in the grand caravan. It's important to use good quality tires as I have gone through numerous ones. Additionally, the gas mileage is not great. Although I initially bought it for the warranty, I have started to experience some minor issues now that the bumper to bumper coverage has expired, such as the back seat not sliding.

I hope this message finds you well. I wanted to share some feedback regarding our van. Unfortunately, we have experienced a few issues with it recently. It has been in the shop for 15 days and we have only had it for 3 months. We have encountered seven different problems so far, and it is currently in the service department for the third time due to a sensory issue. I must admit, I am feeling a bit let down as I really enjoyed the comfort and driving experience of the van. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

Your van has only 7800 miles on it and it feels comfortable and solid. Although the steering pulls to the right and the van struggles to stop due to its heavy weight, it handles well in bad weather. The removable seats are heavy, but there is plenty of interior room. The roof rack may be a bit cheap and weak, and the interior plastic scratches easily. However, overall, this van performs as advertised and appears to be the best minivan value for the dollar.

Researching cars is crucial for safety and reliability. Unfortunately, my experience with this car taught me that safety without reliability is not enough. The alternator failed at only 36k miles, causing me to lose control of the car on the freeway at night. However, I was able to safely exit the freeway and get to a gas station. Although the warranty covered the repair and Kia provided a free tow, the incident put the lives of my family and unborn child at risk. Currently, the car has some issues with the sliding doors and AC compressor/clutch, as well as some electrical problems. Despite these challenges, I am confident that with proper maintenance and care, this car can still be a reliable and safe mode of transportation.

I had a very negative experience with my KIA vehicle that I purchased on 4/2/2010 with 52,000 miles. Unfortunately, within 40 days of purchase, the engine blew and the dealer refused to fix it, blaming me for changing the spark plugs. In the preceding 3 weeks, the vehicle had been in the shop 4 times for various issues such as a bad hub bearing, AC failure, and stalling. Despite multiple inspections, the dealer could not find anything wrong. I discovered that cleaning out the mass air flow sensor helped with the stalling issue. However, at 53,000 miles, the engine started knocking and smoking, and I had to tow it to the dealer, who informed me that I needed a new engine. While my experience with KIA was very disappointing, I would like to emphasize that this is my personal experience and not a reflection of the brand as a whole.
