2002 Kia Sedona problems
The Kia Carnival (Korean: 기아 카니발) is a minivan manufactured by Kia since 1998. It was marketed globally under various nameplates, prominently as the Kia Sedona.
The first generation Carnival was introduced in January 1998, and was marketed in a single, short wheelbase version. Second generation models were marketed (2006–2014) in short and long wheelbase variants. A rebadged variant of the second generation was offered in North America as the Hyundai Entourage (2007–2009). Beginning in 2010, the second generation model received updated equipment, including Kia's corporate Tiger Nose grille, as introduced by its then new design chief, Peter Schreyer. Kia introduced its third generation minivan in 2014, solely in a long wheelbase format. The fourth generation was introduced in 2020, when Kia also began using the Carnival nameplate worldwide.
First generation (KV-II; 1998)
The first generation model was manufactured and marketed differently for specific regions, including under a joint venture in the Chinese market with Dongfeng Yueda Kia, as well as the Naza Ria in Malaysia.
In Indonesia and the Philippines, both Carnival/Sedona names were used. Initially introduced as the Carnival in 2001, from 2003 onwards, it was renamed as the Sedona.

Common 2002 Kia Sedona problems
The Kia Sedona 2002 faced several common problems based on complaints from owners:
- Electrical Problems: The 2002 Sedona was known for electrical issues, particularly with the alternator breaking at an average mileage of 59,000. This problem required an average repair cost of $1,000. Additionally, a phantom draw caused by faulty switches or components led to an average repair cost of $1,500 at around 56,000 miles.
- Heater Pipes Rust: Another significant issue with the 2002 Sedona was the rusting of heater pipes at the rear of the vehicle around 105,000 miles. Repairing this rust issue cost an average of $800.
- Faulty Seat Belts: The 2002 model faced challenges with poorly assembled seat belts that were ineffective in providing proper restraint during collisions. This safety concern was a critical issue for owners due to its potential hazards in the event of an accident.
These problems highlight the reliability issues that plagued the Kia Sedona 2002 model year, impacting the overall ownership experience and potentially leading to costly repairs and safety risks for drivers and passengers.
What problems does the Kia Sedona have?
Early models of the Sedona were fitted with a front disc and rear drum braking system that has caused a lot of brake issues. Uneven brake callipers are the cause of the squealing noise, while also causing uneven brake pad wear.

WE CALLED 911 AND WAITED FOR THE FIRE DEPT TO GET THERE TO EXTINGUISH THE FIRE. THE VAN BECAME FULLY INVOLVED AND BURNED ALMOST COMPLETELY UP. I FOUND OUT LATER THAT DAY OF A RECALL BACK IN 2005 OF POSSIBLE FIRE DANGER CAUSED BY WIRING IN ELECTRIC SEATS. WE BOUGHT THE CAR USED A COUPLE YEARS AGO AND NEVER RECEIVED ANY RECALL NOTICES ABOUT IT. WHAT DOES HER OR I NEED TO DO. IF THIS WAS IN FACT CAUSED DUE TO A RECALL WE NEED TO BE REPLACED WITH ANOTHER VEHICLE. *TR

Our Sedona has been a reliable and comfortable car for us, with over 120,000 miles on it since we bought it in 2002. In the city, we get about 14 mpg and 24 on the highway. We did our research before purchasing and were aware of potential issues, but any problems we encountered were covered by the warranty. If you're considering a used Sedona, it's worth noting that Kia made improvements to certain parts later in the year, such as the transmission and engine mounts, and sunroof cable. We recommend checking the manufacturing date and opting for a later build.

I took a major trip covering 6000 miles back and forth, and the van was wonderful. It was very comfortable to drive and the interior was great. However, after the bumper to bumper warranty expired at 60,000 miles, it started having some major problems. Firstly, some kind of pulley broke inside which cost me $1300 to fix. Then, the alternator went out which cost $600 to replace. I also had to replace the seat belt which cost $125, the steering shaft which cost $200, and the backlight which will cost $250 to replace. Although the plastic on the sides of the doors is kind of weak and the bumpers are thin and fragile, I didn't fix them. It is true that this vehicle can be expensive to repair, but the gas mileage is not that terrible anyway.

I have owned several mini vans, all of them GM's. However, I must say that the Kia surpasses them in both quality and price. The van boasts exceptional design both inside and out, and I am excited to spend several years driving this vehicle. The handling and fit/finish are excellent, and the van has earned 5 stars across the board for crash worthiness. The gas mileage is so-so, but that is likely due to the van's weight.
-
What an interesting vehicle! It's quite heavy, but that just adds to the smooth and comfortable ride. The gas mileage may suffer a bit (a real 20), but the drivetrain is outstandingly smooth and powerful - surprisingly so. With 195 horses and a FIVE speed automatic, it's a joy to drive. The ABS brakes may feel a bit spongy, but they work just fine. The handling is quite neutral, with pronounced torque steer only when accelerating hard. The interior is well laid out and comfortable, although it may be a bit cramped for very big drivers. All in all, it's an enormous amount of van for the money!

Congratulations on your new Kia Sedona EX! It sounds like you made a great choice. The features you got, including ABS, Leather and Homelink, for 21,500 + tax are impressive. The car has many nice features and rides well. It's great to hear that you received 2 keyless remotes without even asking. The two-tone paint is a nice touch and makes the car look much more expensive. While it may not be as roomy as some other vans, it's still a great value for the $8,000 in savings. Overall, I would definitely recommend this vehicle. Best of luck and hopefully you won't have to use the great warranty!

We are currently experiencing noises in the front end of our vehicle and have been in contact with the Arbitration Department. Despite the dealer's efforts, the source of the noise has not yet been identified. Kia is actively working to find a solution and we are confident that they will resolve the issue. While we understand the concern for safety, the dealer has assured us that it is not a hazard. We are eagerly awaiting further communication from the Arbitration Department and have faith in the warranty provided. In the meantime, we have also reported other rattles to the dealer and will wait for their response.

I bought my 2002 Kia Sedona brand new from the showroom floor. It ran well for the first year, but then problems started to arise. There was a loud humming noise coming from the front end, which the dealer initially thought was due to the tires, but it turned out to be defective boots. The alternator died at 62,000 miles during a highway drive at 65 mph. At 80,000 miles, the car began to surge forward and lose power, and the check engine light came on. The dealer has been unable to diagnose the issue, and the car has been in the shop multiple times. Unfortunately, the vehicle is currently unsafe, and I would not feel comfortable having my family in it anymore. As a result, I decided to purchase a Toyota Sienna Limited, and what a world of difference it has been! Even my 98 Pontiac Montana with a replaced transmission was more reliable than this KIA.
Ernest Gerhold 2024-05-24
This van has had several issues, including poor gas mileage, a faulty transmission at 15,000 miles, and frequent replacement of front brakes, A/C system, alternator, front hub bearings, front struts, front stabilizer links, rear heater lines, accelerator cable, and battery. It is not recommended to purchase this van unless you are willing to frequently visit the service department. This has been my worst automobile purchase experience.

Hi everyone, I was wondering if anyone has experienced a stress crack on their windshield? We are currently testing the warranty and so far, the dealer has claimed that it was caused by a rock hitting the windshield in just the right spot, even though there is no visible mark. We are hoping that the dealer will replace the windshield. Other than that, the van has been great! The after-market DVD has been working well, although it does make some noise.

Hey there! I just picked up our brand new blue/beige Sedona EX today with only 24 miles on it. I was a bit hesitant about getting a Kia due to their past reputation of building unremarkable cars. However, I was really impressed by the content per dollar compared to other vans we were considering, and my first impression was really positive. We looked at vans from Honda, Mazda, Chrysler, and Toyota, but they all wanted way too much money for a van with any kind of options. Even with some rebates on the others, the Kia still won out. Now the big question is, will we have to USE that fantastic warranty Kia has or will the van be reasonably trouble-free? I'll definitely keep you posted!
