The Hyundai Sonata (Korean: 현대 쏘나타) is a mid-size car that has been manufactured by Hyundai since 1985. The first generation Sonata, which was introduced in 1985, was a facelifted version of the Hyundai Stellar with an engine upgrade, and was withdrawn from the market in two years due to poor customer reaction. While the nameplate was originally only sold in South Korea, the second generation of 1988 was widely exported.

The Sonata is currently manufactured in South Korea where their headquarters are located, China and Pakistan. It was named after the musical term, sonata.

First generation (Y1; 1985)

The first Sonata was introduced to compete with the Daewoo Royale series and was a more luxurious version of the Stellar. It included cruise control, power seats, head lamp washers, power brakes, electric operated adjustable side mirrors and chrome bumper trims. The Sonata was available with two trim options in Korea: Luxury and Super (the latter only available with a 2.0-liter engine). In the domestic market Hyundai attempted to sell the Sonata as an executive car using catchphrases like "Luxury car for VIP"; however, as the Sonata was based on the Stellar without any major changes, it was seen by the public as no more than a luxury version of the Stellar. In 1987 Hyundai added two tone color schemes and a trip computer option, but sales soon went down and the car was discontinued in December of that year. The Sonata was sold only in the South Korean domestic market. The vehicle was unveiled in South Korea on 4 November 1985.

Engine choices included 1.6-liter Mitsubishi Saturn (only available outside the domestic market), 1.8- and 2.0-liter Mitsubishi Sirius inline-fours. The latter unit also found its way into the 1987 and later Stellar, and in MPI form the 1986 Hyundai Grandeur. The body was a largely unchanged Hyundai Stellar.

It was sold in New Zealand (right hand drive) with the 1.6-liter Mitsubishi engine with the five-speed manual gearbox; an automatic transmission was an optional extra. The original importer was a unit of the Auckland-based Giltrap Motor Group.

The final version of the Stellar was known as the Stellar 88 and was launched to celebrate the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul. Afterwards, Hyundai discontinued the Stellar and replaced it with the all-new Sonata.

Negative 2013 Hyundai Sonata hybrid car reviews

There is a recall on the engine, but don't worry, it has great gas mileage. I understand how annoying it can be when the cup holder hits your leg on the door panel.

    1. I noticed that the passenger seat was 4-5 inches lower than the driver's seat, but unfortunately the dealer did not make any attempt to correct it. 2. Although the mileage lawsuit did not make up for the cost and did not address the carbon exhaust (which requires paying extra for the hybrid), I still appreciate the effort. 3. I was disappointed to learn that the lease end fee was $400, plus an additional $1000 for 'damage' from normal wear and tear over the course of 3 years. As a result, I have decided not to purchase another Hyundai.

Hi there! I wanted to share my experience with my car. I bought it for its great gas mileage and for the first 3 years, I was getting an impressive 40mpg. However, recently I've noticed that it has dropped to 30mpg and I'm not sure what's causing it. I've taken it to the dealer, but unfortunately, they don't seem to know what's wrong either. They haven't been very helpful and I'm a bit disappointed. I'm considering getting a new SUV that can give me the same gas mileage as my current car. I've been looking at Subarus and I think that might be a good option for me. I've decided to avoid hybrids this time around. Thanks for listening!

I purchased a 2013 hybrid car with 32K miles in 2016. For the first 8000 miles, I consistently averaged 38 MPG (550 miles per tank), which I checked every time. However, I suddenly began to get only 28 MPG (420 miles per tank), despite taking the car to the dealer and spending $330 with no improvement. Unfortunately, the dealer could not explain the decrease in mileage. As a result, I am disappointed and cannot recommend this vehicle. I plan to sell it soon and invest in a better one.

Congratulations on your new 2012 Sonata Hybrid! It's great to hear that you took the time to explore your options and found a comfortable car to drive. It's also good to know that the build quality is holding up well. While the gas mileage may not be quite what you were hoping for, averaging around 30 MPG in mostly in-town driving is still impressive. I hope you continue to enjoy your comfortable and reliable Sonata Hybrid on the road!

Positive 2013 Hyundai Sonata hybrid car reviews

I'm so happy with my new car! I used to drive a truck that only got 15mpg, but now I have a car that gets 38mpg in the city and over 40mpg on my 25-mile trip home from work. That means I'm saving a lot of money on gas - over half of my car payment! The handling is great too - it transitions smoothly from electric to gas engine. The leather package was definitely worth it - the interior design is stylish and there's plenty of room. The exterior design is also really cool, especially the lights. The only thing I wish I could change is the wheels, but that's available for a little more money. Overall, I'm very satisfied!

Congratulations on your purchase of a used 2013 Sonata Hybrid! It's great to hear that the quality of the Sonata build really shines through, with every electronic component working like new. It's impressive to see the hybrid technology in action, and it's clear that Hyundai has done an excellent job with this car. While you may have driven a Prius before, the Sonata Hybrid feels like a much better option, with no gimmicks and a solid build. Of course, with any car, there are always a few maintenance items to take care of, but it's great to know that you can rely on the quality of the parts and service. Thanks for sharing your experience with us!

I recently purchased my second Sonata Hybrid. I originally bought a 2011 model and absolutely loved it. However, I decided to upgrade to a 2012 model with tan interior and I am even more in love with this car. Everywhere I go, people ask me what kind of car it is. I opted for the dual sunroof and leather interior in Pearl white, which gives it a luxurious feel similar to a BMW. Despite owning many cars, including an Audi A8L and an E550 coupe, I find myself choosing to drive this car most of the time due to its great gas mileage. Additionally, my experience with the dealership was the best I've ever had, specifically at Universal Hyundai Orlando.

I purchased this car in 2014 and was surprised to find out that it only had 50 miles on it. When I asked the salesman why nobody had purchased this beautiful car, he replied that it just hadn't found a home yet. He then offered me a discount of $8,000 and I decided to buy it. Overall, it's a great car that drives well, although it did have a few recalls that were promptly fixed. It can be a bit temperamental in cold weather, but it's a speedy little thing on the highway! I've now had it for eight years and was initially concerned about the hybrid battery. However, after doing some online research, I discovered that Hyundai offers original owners of the 2012 Sonata Hybrid a lifetime free replacement at no cost, regardless of mileage or years. Does anyone know if this is true?

I've been driving the car for a month now and I feel like I have a good sense of its performance. On the highway, it's excellent - with great response and gas mileage of 39+mpg. The ride is comfortable too. However, there are some issues that I've noticed. The car can be a bit dangerous to drive, especially between 0-25mph. It hesitates badly and shakes the entire car when transitioning from electric to gas. Unfortunately, it's impossible to get close to the advertised city MPG. I try to drive as gently as possible to stay in EV mode, but even the slightest touch on the pedal sends it to gas, which decreases the MPG. In city driving, I'm lucky to get 30mpg. Additionally, the gauges sometimes hang up and read 0 mpg in EV mode, when they should read 50mpg.
