1998 Volvo V70 problems

volvo logo

The Volvo V70 is an executive car manufactured and marketed by Volvo Cars from 1996 to 2016 across three generations. The name V70 combines the letter V, standing for versatility, and 70, denoting relative platform size (i.e., a V70 is larger than a V40, but smaller than a V90).

The first generation (1996–2000) debuted in November 1996. It was based on the P80 platform and was available with front and all-wheel drive (AWD), the latter marketed as the V70 AWD. In September 1997, a crossover version called the V70 XC or V70 Cross Country was introduced. The sedan model was called Volvo S70.

The second generation (2000–2007) debuted in spring 2000. It was based on the P2 platform and, as with its predecessor, was also offered as an all-wheel drive variant marketed as the V70 AWD and as a crossover version initially called V70 XC. For the 2003 model year, the crossover was renamed to XC70. The sedan model was called Volvo S60.

The third generation (2007–2016) debuted in February 2007. It was based on the P3 platform and marketed as the V70 and the XC70. Production of the V70 ended on 25 April 2016, the XC70 continued until 13 May 2016. The sedan model was called Volvo S80.

Common 1998 Volvo V70 problems

The Volvo V70 1998 is known for several common problems that owners have reported. These issues range from mechanical faults to electrical problems and can affect the overall performance and safety of the vehicle.

  • Electronic Throttle Module: The electronic throttle module in the Volvo V70 1998 can gunk up over time, causing unresponsive acceleration and a jumpy ride. This can be a significant issue, and it is essential to check for any signs of strange behavioral symptoms in the car, such as hesitation or stalling.
  • Diesel Particulate Filter: The diesel particulate filter in the Volvo V70 1998 needs to be replaced every 75,000 miles, and if not replaced, it can cause the car to stall and idle badly. Black smoke coming out of the exhaust is a sign of a DPF blockage, and it is essential to replace the filter as soon as possible.
  • Turbo Problems: A whining noise coming from the front of the car when driving at low speeds with moderate acceleration can indicate a problem with the turbo. This can be a significant issue, and it is essential to address it as soon as possible to avoid further damage to the engine.
  • Air Con and Climate Control: It is essential to check the full potential of the climate control and air conditioning system in the Volvo V70 1998, as some owners have reported issues with the system not working correctly.
  • Transmission Problems: Struggling to change gears when driving can indicate a problem with the transmission. This can be a significant issue, and it is essential to address it as soon as possible to avoid further damage to the transmission system.
  • Hard Starts and Misfiring: The cambelt on the V70 is famous for its susceptibility to rapid wear, and any symptoms of hard starts, misfiring, or a distinctive ticking noise coming from the engine can indicate that the cambelt needs to be replaced.
  • Uneven Tyre Wear: Uneven tyre wear is usually the result of a misaligned steering system or a problem with suspension alignment geometry. While there are lots of online guides available to help resolve this issue, it’s quite challenging to do to a professional level.
  • Unusual Smell in Cabin: An odd smell inside the car, and the check engine light may be illuminated, and the car may also hesitate while accelerating. This issue affects around 70,000 V70s in the UK, and Volvo is aware of the problem but has yet to officially release a fix for it.
  • DPF Warning Light: A DPF warning light can indicate a problem with the diesel particulate filter, and it is essential to address this issue as soon as possible to avoid further damage to the engine.

In conclusion, while the Volvo V70 1998 is a great car overall, it is essential to be aware of these common problems and address them as soon as possible to avoid further damage to the vehicle. Regular maintenance and checks can help to identify these issues early on and ensure that the car remains safe and reliable for years to come.

What is the common problem with Volvo V70?

The top engine mount is known for failing on the V70. When you are taking off, or changing gear you may hear a loud knocking noise. Another symptom of the top engine mount failing is when you open the bonnet, have someone rev the engine for you and if it shakes excessively then this is the cause.

What is the best year of Volvo V70 to buy?

Going back to the 2000-2007 era still makes sense. This V70 still looks great and can have kiddie- friendly rear seats in the boot, but mostly it's a proper load-lugger, with its posh carpeted cargo bay. Note that it got something of a revamp in 2004.

What is the life expectancy of a Volvo V70?

That being said, Volvo Cars is among the top brands when it comes to longevity. Among the factors mentioned above, regular maintenance and driving style can make a huge difference. Overall, expect to see your Volvo vehicle last for over 200,000 miles if you give it proper care each year.

How many miles is a Volvo V70 good for?

I have an 850 turbo with 340,000 miles and my V70 low pressure turbo just turned over 310,000. Neither of these cars has ever had a major component repair. Just Normal wear and tear maintenance... Brakes, Shocks, Timing belts etc.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2015-08-12
  • VIN: YV1LW5571W2
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: THE IGNITION SWITCH FREQUENTLY JAMS, LOCKED, IN THE "OFF" POSITION. THE KEY CAN BE INSERTED, BUT THE IGNITION LOCK WILL NOT TURN, MAKING IT IMPOSSIBLE TO START AND OPERATE THE VEHICLE OR TURN ON ACCESSORIES OR TURN THE STEERING WHEEL, RENDERING THE VEHICLE COMPLETELY INOPERATIVE. WHEN THE IGNITION IS IN THE "ON" POSITION, IT CAN BE TURNED OFF WITHOUT DIFFICULTY. WHEN IT IS "OFF," HOWEVER, IT FREQUENTLY CAN NOT BE TURNED "ON". A QUICK INTERNET SEARCH REVEALED THAT THIS IS A RATHER COMMON PROBLEM.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2016-01-29
  • VIN: VY1LW5541W2
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: I WAS ON THE ENTRANCE RAMP TO I-94 WHEN THE ACCELERATOR STOMPED FLUSH TO THE FLOOR. THE ENGINE REVVED UNCONTROLLABLY AND I TRIED TO CLUTCH IT DOWN BUT KEPT ON ACCELERATING. AT THIS POINT I TURNED OFF THE IGNITION BUT THAT DID NO GOOD. ALL THE INSTRUMENTATION TURNED OFF BUT THE ENGINE WAS MAXED OUT AND WAS GOING BERSERK. I HAD A CLUTCH SO I PUSHED IT INTO NEUTRAL BUT THE RPMS WENT TO THE 7,000S. WITH THE KEYS OFF, I PULLED OF THE INTERSTATE DESPERATELY TRYING TO SLOW DOWN THE RPMS BUT NOTHING WORKED. I FINALLY PUT IT INTO GEAR TO TRY AND STOP IT AND IT LITERALLY 'BLEW UP'. IT'S TOTALED. WHAT I WANT TO KNOW IS IF THIS HAS BEEN PREVIOUSLY REPORTED, IF THERE HAS BEEN ANY KIND OF RECALL ON THIS. VOLVO WOULDN'T ANSWER ANY OF MY QUESTIONS. IT WAS A GREAT CAR BUT IT WAS A VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION THAT I HAVEN'T BEEN ABLE TO GET ANY ANSWERS ABOUT. IT APPARENTLY WAS SOME KIND OF A COMPUTER MALFUNCTION AS A MECHANICAL FAILURE WOULD HAVE BEEN SOLVED BY TURNING THE KEY 'OFF'! I WANT TO LODGE A COMPLAINT BUT DON'T KNOW WHERE TO START.

SUSPENSION,POWER TRAIN,ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL (ESC),ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2014-05-12
  • VIN: YV1LZ5648W2
  • Components: SUSPENSION,POWER TRAIN,ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL (ESC),ENGINE
  • Summary: I JUST PURCHASED ABOUT 2 MONTHS AGO A 1998 VOLVO V70 USED ON 4/3/2014 FOR 3000.00 . THE VEHICLE DROVE JUST FINE UP UNTIL TWO WEEKS AGO WHERE THE TRANSMISSION SEEMS TO BE SLIPPING. WHILE I WAS RIDING ON I695 AND WAS GOING ABOUT SIXTY MILES PER HOUR WHEN THE CAR JERKED AND CUT OFF, MEANING BLINKING IN AND OUT OF THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM ALONG WITH THE ENGINE AS I WAS PULLING OVER ON THE SHOULDER, WHICH IS TERRIBLY UNSAFE. I ASSUMED AND THOUGHT VOLVO'S WERE GREAT ON MILES AND TRANSMISSION SO I DIDN'T EXPECT IT TO BE HAVING THESE TYPE OF ISSUES. I AM A FIRST TIME VOLVO PURCHASER AND HIGHLY DISAPPOINTED AND IT'S TO EXPENSIVE FOR ALL THE HASSLES. ALL OF THE MINOR ISSUES WERE EXPECTED BECAUSE OF THE VEHICLE BEING A USED CAR. ALSO, I CANNOT EVEN CHECK THE TRANSMISSION FLUID LEVELS IN ORDER TO SEE IF ALL I NEED IS SOME TRANSMISSION FLUID, THE DIPSTICK THAT LEADS TO THE TRANSMISSION IS STUCK, AS IN I HAVE TRIED PULLING, TWISTING AND TURNING BUT TO NO AVAIL. AFTER PURCHASING A 300 DOLLAR KEY PAD FROM THE DEALER I EXPECT MORE FROM THE MANUAL AND AT LEAST TO BE ABLE TO CHECK ALL FLUIDS ON THE VEHICLE. IF THESE MINOR ISSUES DIDN'T EVOLVE INTO MAJOR ISSUES WITH MY VOLVO VEHICLE I WOULD NOT HAVE AN ISSUE. YET THE PROBLEM IS THAT THESE MINOR ISSUES ARE INDEED CAUSING MAJOR REPAIRS WHICH IS SIMPLY UNACCEPTABLE AND CAUSING UNSAFE DRIVING HAZARDOUS SITUATIONS THAT COULD INDEED AFFECT THE LIFE OF MYSELF AND OTHER DRIVERS. THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR LISTEN AND HOPEFULLY DIRECTLY ADDRESSING MY CONCERNS. STRUCTURE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2013-09-02
  • VIN: YV1LZ5640W2
  • Components: STRUCTURE
  • Summary: DRIVERS SIDE DOOR HINGE/STRAP FAILED CAUSING DOOR TO BREAK FROM FRAME AND BECOME DYSFUNCTIONAL. AS IT WORSENED OVER A FEW DAYS THE DOOR BECAME INCREASINGLY DIFFICULT TO OPEN WHERE IT BECAME A SAFETY CONCERN. VOLVO MECHANIC REFERRED TO AUTO METAL SERVICE SHOP WHICH REPLACED/REPAIRED DOOR STRAP AND WELDED DOOR BACK TO FRAME AND CONFIRMED THIS WAS A KNOWN "WORKMANSHIP" DEFECT WITH A NUMBER OF VOLVO MODELS AND YEARS. VOLVO N.A. WAS NOTIFIED OF THIS 9/13/13 AND WAS INTERESTED TO SEE THE REPAIR INVOICE, WHICH WAS PROVIDED TO THEM, BUT IN THE END THEY DECLINED TO REIMBURSE FOR THIS FLAW STATING THE CAR WAS NO LONGER COVERED BY A MANUFACTURER'S WARRANTY. WHEN THE DRIVERS SIDE DOOR BECOMES DYSFUNCTIONAL FROM FAULTY WORKMANSHIP THAT INDICATES A SAFETY ISSUE THAT THE MANUFACTURER SHOULD "MAN UP" AND REPAIR/RECALL OR REIMBURSE THE OWNER FOR, REGARDLESS IF THE VEHICLE IS NO LONGER UNDER MANUFACTURER'S WARRANTY. DOORS SHOULDN'T JUST BREAK OFF FROM THE FRAME UNDER NORMAL USE. THERE WAS NO CRASH OR ABUSE INVOLVED WITH THIS DOOR. IT JUST BROKE LIKE A CHEAP, INFERIOR PRODUCT. *TR

I ALWAYS HAD A FEAR THAT ALL OF THE ELECTRICAL PROBLEMS-DASHBOARD LIGHTS,CHECK ENGINE LIGHT-WOULD RESULT IN A SAFETY PROBLEM. Negative 1998 Volvo V70 car reviews

  1. Kayley Jakubowski 2024-11-25

When I was searching for a reliable car, the first brand that came to mind was Volvo. My boyfriend had an 86 Volvo 240 wagon at the time, and that car never let him down. I thought I had found my workhorse, a car that would easily last me 300k miles. However, I was mistaken. In the first week, the check engine light came on, and I spent hundreds of dollars on diagnostics fees, but the issue was not resolved. The heater and A/C also failed, and the repairs were costly. I had to replace the timing belt, water pump, and several sensors, one of which cost $350. The door lock even broke. Unfortunately, I cannot recommend this car.

  2. Amparo Friesen 2024-10-04

I recently purchased an ultra clean silver v70 wagon with 135k miles, despite it needing a few obvious repairs. To help finance the purchase, I traded in my somewhat hated kia rio 5 speed no power steering car that I bought new 9 years ago, receiving a discount of $1750. Although I have read mixed reviews about this car, I am hopeful that it will not require too many costly repairs. Additionally, the car has a high safety rating, which means that I can insure it for much less at only $60.00 a month for full coverage. Only time will tell how it performs, but I am optimistic.

I have been a loyal Volvo customer since the mid 80's. However, I have had some negative experiences with the quality of the materials used in the cars, as well as the high cost of parts and service. Unfortunately, my recent service, which cost me $1000, did not fix the emissions issue and the car still won't pass. Additionally, there is a persistent shake in the front end of the car, which has been looked at twice but never resolved. As a result, I have decided that I will not be purchasing another Volvo in the future.

I absolutely love driving this car, no matter the weather. The seats are fantastic and can be adjusted to any position for maximum comfort. The performance, especially the handling, is top-notch (and I've owned Audis and a Porsche before). I recently took a 3500-mile road trip and was rarely uncomfortable. However, I do agree with some other reviews that trips to the Volvo repair shop are too frequent and quite expensive. The car tends to go through brakes ($1k for all 4) and turn signal bulbs quite quickly. I've also had to replace the front suspension supports on both sides ($750 per side), the generator, air pump, and even weld a door hinge ($500 each). It can feel endless at times. In terms of fuel usage, I get around 17mpg in the city but about 28 on the highway.

Great car if you have a dealer who can fix all the things that go wrong with it. It's a pleasure to drive. However, it can get expensive after the warranty runs out. Unfortunately, two out of three dealers we dealt with were almost incompetent and horrible. On the bright side, the third dealer was great and a pleasure to deal with. It would have been helpful if Volvo North America had done more to police dealerships, especially after repeated problems.

We replaced our first used Volvo, an 850 Wagon, with this newer model, only to find that it is an over-engineered and temperamental computer with 4WD. Its performance is very good. I love being able to accelerate rapidly from 70 mph around a semi with no problem, and its wet/snow performance is great. However, I am constantly staring at that 'check engine' light. It can illuminate for anything from not replacing the gas cap securely to an emission control sensor, wire, computer, or who knows what. The cruise control failed after one year and minimal use, and it took three trips to the dealer to get it fixed. Once the warranty expires, watch out!

I love this car! It's comfortable, safe, and reliable, and it can take me anywhere I need to go. However, I have to admit that my $5000 purchase of a used car has probably now cost me upwards of $10,000, including repairs. I've owned it for 5 years, and it hasn't been exactly what I was looking for in a used vehicle. It's been one thing after another- engine mounts, locks, windows, power steering leak, rear drive shaft, and now the air pump system. This is not a used vehicle you want to buy if you're not willing to put a lot of money into it. Looking back, I probably would have settled for something cheaper to repair.

Hey there! I absolutely love my first car, and I still own it to this day. It's been a great ride so far, with only one minor repair needed on the front left brake caliper. Unfortunately, a seal went bad and allowed water to get inside, causing some rust and preventing it from releasing all the way when I let off the brake. Labor costs can be a bit steep, but I was able to find some cheaper refurbished parts from Volvo, which worked out great. Since it's a heavier car, I've noticed that it tends to go through tires a bit faster than others, but that's a small price to pay for such a fantastic body and appearance. Even after 11 years, it still looks brand new! I'm actually thinking about upgrading to some larger factory Volvo wheels, as the 15

This car has been in my family for years, passed down from my older brother to my sister and finally to me. We've all used it during our college years. Although I used to dislike it because it's a station wagon, this car has proven to be incredibly reliable. My parents have taken great care of it and they feel confident with us driving it. It even has features that my friend's newer car doesn't have, like AWD, which comes in handy at school in upstate Pennsylvania. And between us, the turbo is pretty impressive! :)

I purchased this car at a repo auction and was able to obtain service records from the selling dealer. During my ownership, I upgraded to ceramic brake pads and top-of-the-line rotors at a minimum cost as a DIY job (yes, I'm a woman!). The ABS module was out, which is a common issue, but I only paid $150 to get it fixed and now it's perfect. I always use Mobil 1 oil and Mann filters for oil changes. That's all the maintenance it has needed. I recently did a tune-up for less than $100 in parts, again as a DIY project. This car is amazing! Mine is fully loaded and, other than very routine maintenance, it has been great. This year, I just need to recharge the Freon.
