Plymouth Voyager is a nameplate for a range of vans that were marketed by the Plymouth division of Chrysler. From 1974 until 1983, the Voyager was a full-size van, sold as the counterpart of Dodge Sportsman (later the Dodge Ram Wagon). Starting with the 1984 model year, the Voyager was marketed as one of the new Chrysler minivan, along with the Dodge Caravan. As a minivan, there were three generations of the Voyager from 1984 until 2000. Following the closure of the Plymouth division in 2000, the Voyager was marketed under the Chrysler brand as a lower-trim version of the Chrysler Town & Country through 2003.

From 1988 through 2016, Chrysler used the Chrysler Voyager name for export-market minivans; during the existence of the Plymouth brand, export-market Voyagers were produced with the body and trim of the Dodge Caravan. Including the Plymouth Voyager and Dodge Caravan with their rebadged Chrysler, Lancia, and Volkswagen variants, the Chrysler minivans collectively rank as the 13th best-selling automotive model line worldwide.

The Plymouth Voyager minivan was assembled by Chrysler at its Windsor Assembly facility in Windsor, Ontario, Canada; from 1987 to 2000, the Voyager was also assembled at Saint Louis Assembly in Fenton, Missouri (North plant from 1987 through 1995; South plant from 1996 until 2000).

The full-size Plymouth Voyager van was assembled from 1974 until 1983 at the Pillette Road Truck Assembly in Windsor, Ontario, Canada, and at the St. Louis North Assembly Plant in Fenton, Missouri.

STEERING,SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC,ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2012-01-17
  • VIN: 2P4GP44R4WR
  • Components: STEERING,SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC,ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: I PURCHASED VEHICLE USED AND FOUND NO PROBLEMS WITH THE VEHICLE WITH THE EXCEPTION OF A SQUEAKY SERPENTINE BELT. PUT A LITTLE BELT DRESSING ON IT AND THAT WAS AS FAR AS THE ISSUE WENT. THEN ON A DARK RAINY NIGHT, WENT THROUGH A RAIN PUDDLE-VERY SLOWLY, AND INSTANTLY, STEERING BECAME VERY DIFFICULT. THE WORST PART OF THIS EXPERIENCE THIS NIGHT WAS TRYING TO PUT BELT BACK ON PULLEYS, AS YOU CAN IMAGINE IN THE DARK AND NO IDEA HOW TO ROUTE IT. THANK GOODNESS THERE WAS A DIAGRAM IN ENGINE. WITH NO KNOWLEDGE THAT THIS WAS A VERY WELL KNOWN ISSUE WITH THESE VEHICLES IT WAS QUITE A SURPRISE. AFTER RESEARCHING THIS ONLINE, AND READING ALL OF THE CONSUMER COMPLAINTS I CAN'T FIGURE OUT WHAT YOU PEOPLE ARE WAITING FOR!! FATAL ACCIDENTS!! THERE HAS BEEN MORE THAN ENOUGH INFO SUBMITTED AND DOCUMENTED TO WARRANT A RECALL AND HAVE THE MANUFACTURER TAKE CARE OF THIS. OH-BUT GUESS WHAT? ANOTHER COMPANY 'GATES" HAS COME UP WITH A SOLUTION THAT APPARENTLY HAS HAD POSITIVE REVIEWS. MY ORDER IS IN AND I AM AWAITING MY RETROFITTED TENSIONER BELT COMPONENT KIT SO THAT I WILL FEEL SAFE ENOUGH TO BE OUT ON THE ROADS AND THAT I WILL NOT BECOME A HAZARD TO OTHER DRIVERS ON THE ROAD WITH ME. THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT COMES TO THE AID OF A BIG COMPANY LIKE CHRYSLER (PLYMOUTH) EVEN WHEN IT IS MORE THAN OBVIOUS THAT THEY ARE BUILDING SUBSTANDARD CARS. THIS IS NOT A MAJOR REPAIR, BUT IT IS CERTAINLY A PROBLEM THAT COULD VERY EASILY CAUSE SERIOUS BODILY INJURIES TO MANY PEOPLE FROM JUST ONE INCIDENT! IT HAS NOW BEEN FOURTEEN YEARS SINCE THIS CAR WAS MANUFACTURED. HOW MANY YEARS OF COMPLAINTS DOES IT TAKE TO GET SOMEONE TO NOTICE AND TAKE ACTION? IS THERE SOMEONE ABOVE YOU THAT WE HAVE TO BEG, PLEASE HELP US! THE LITTLE GUYS. WHY SHOULD WE HAVE TO BEG, "PLEASE DON'T LET MY CAR BE THE ONE THAT IS GOING TO KILL SOMEONE."MAKE THE ONES RESPONSIBLE-BE RESPONSIBLE! THANK YOU (I THINK). *TR

RAIN SNOW) THE MICRO V BELT SLIPS OFF AND MAKES THE VAN HARD TO DRIVE AND MAY IN TIME IF NOT ALREADY CAUSE AND ACCIDENT THE FIRST TIME IT HAPPENED TO US WE WENT THOUGH A SMALL PUDDLE OF WATER ON AN ON RAMP FROM ONE FREE WAY TO ANOTHER AND THE VAN BECAME UNSTABLE AND HARD TO STEER WE HAD A 11 AND A 2 YEAR OLD IN THIS VAN AND NOW IT DOESN'T MATTER WHEN WE DRIVE IN THE RAIN IT HAPPENS I HAVE BEEN TOLD THAT THERE IS A FIX BUT THE KIT IS OVER 200 DOLLARS AND IS NEXT TO IMPOSSIBLE FOR PEOPLE TO FIX THIS ON FIXED INCOMES TO THIS DAY WE STILL DEAL WITH IT BUT SOMETHING SHOULD BE DONE ABOUT IT WITH CHRYSLER AND AFTER DOING A SEARCH ON JUST GOOGLE ALONE I FOUND 1500-5000 DIFFERENT COMPLIANCE ON THIS ONE PROBLEM. *TR

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2009-03-05
  • VIN: 1P4GP44R5WB
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: DASHBOARD INSTRUMENT PANEL KEEPS COMING ON AND GOING OFF, ABS LIGHT COMES ON THEN THE INSTRUMENT PANEL GOES OFF. SPEED IS UNKNOWN, AMOUNT OF GAS IS UNKNOWN, OIL, ETC. THIS IS RIDICULOUS IN THE FACT THAT SO MANY HAVE BEEN COMPLAINING ABOUT IT AND THE COMPANY STILL HASN'T RECALLED THE VEHICLES TO HAVE THIS ISSUE FIXED. YES I MAY HAVE A 1998 PLYMOUTH VOYAGER, BUT I DON'T FEEL THAT BECAUSE OF THE INCOMPETENCE THAT THIS COMPANY HAS THAT I SHOULD HAVE TO SHELL OUT MONEY TO HAVE IT FIGURED OUT AND REPAIRED. I UNDERSTAND NORMAL WEAR AND TEAR BUT THIS IS NOT NORMAL (FOR OTHER VEHICLES, OBVIOUSLY VERY NORMAL FOR THIS ONE IN GENERAL). THE STRANGEST THING IS, IF THE VEHICLE IS WARMED UP FROM THE SUN, THE PANEL SEEMS TO WORK, THE MAJORITY OF THE TIME, WHERE I LIVE IT DOESN'T WORK, AND I HAVE TO GUESSTIMATE EVERYTHING. HOW IS THIS SAFE?!?! *TR

MY WIFE USUALLY ENJOYS DRIVING HER VAN BUT NOW HAS LOST ALL CONFIDENCE IN IT. SHE STATES IT'S A VERY SCARY SITUATION, NOT TO MENTION DANGEROUS. WITH ALL I HAVE READ IT IS ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE TO BELIEVE THERE HAS NOT BEEN A RECALL TO HAVE THIS VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION CORRECTED. *TR

The van has been overall good. Unfortunately, two years ago, the AC compressor blew up. It wouldn't have been too expensive to fix, except that Chrysler was too cheap to install an in-line screen on the AC lines, which caused metal to explode into the AC lines. My mechanic tried in vain to flush it, but ended up replacing the compressor and other parts. He probably spent two weeks on and off trying to fix it, and the labor was probably worth two grand, but he only charged me 2k for all parts and labor. Additionally, the front headlights are not great, as the plastic covers have discolored over time, but these lights never illuminated greatly. Other than that, the van has run for 10.5 years without too many problems. Would I buy it again? Yes, definitely!

I really appreciate the spaciousness of the van. As a parent with a large family, it's important to have enough room for everyone and their belongings. It's been a fantastic vehicle for hauling larger items as well. I've actually owned three Grand Voyagers and have found them to be a great fit for my needs. While I have had to replace the transmission and serpentine belt a few times, I was able to solve the issue by replacing the pulley. Recently, we had an issue with the interior lights and cruise control after replacing the battery, and unfortunately, the lights and horn stopped working. As with any used car, there are bound to be some issues, but we've been able to make it work. In fact, we even removed the rear seats and turned it into a comfortable bed for a road trip from Idaho to Arizona, which was a great experience.

I recently purchased a van from a dodge dealership. Unfortunately, within 2 months of buying the car, I had to take it to a mechanic due to bad sway bar bushings. At 84,000 miles, the oil light came on and it turned out to be a bad oil pressure sensor. Then, at 88,000 miles, the valve guide fell out of the head, causing low compression in the number 2 combustion chamber. I had to have the head rebuilt for a total of $1000.00. Six months later, at 102,000 miles, the front main burst and it threw a connecting rod on an interstate merge in D.C. To make matters worse, there were numerous electrical problems to go along with the poor craftsmanship. I hope this information helps others make a more informed decision when purchasing a vehicle.

Hello! Thank you for sharing your experience with us. We purchased this car brand new for my wife and our three children back in May 1998. We loved the spaciousness and comfort it provided us. However, we have had some issues with its reliability over the years. Although it has never left us stranded, it has required multiple repairs. Thankfully, we had purchased an extended warranty which helped us cover some of the costs. Unfortunately, when the warranty expired, we had to deal with some expensive repairs such as the head gasket, timing chain, and transmission pan. We also had to replace the evaporator on the AC which cost us $1100. Additionally, it needs new tires and probably a starter. After careful consideration, we decided not to invest more money into it and traded it in last week. We were happy to receive $2000 in real money towards a Toyota. Thank you again for sharing your story with us!

I bought this van brand new in 1998 after test driving all the available options. I decided that this van offered the best value for my money. Unfortunately, I have experienced some issues since day one. I have had to replace the brakes four times (calipers, rotors, pads, entire overhaul) and the transmission has been slipping since day one. Despite taking it to the dealer, they have been unable to fix it. The AC has also broken down twice, the windows open and close randomly, and the power steering is noisy. The side door even got stuck and had to be removed to get it to work again. Despite these annoying problems, I still love the design of the van. It has plenty of room and many features that I use on a regular basis, such as the temperature gauge, compass, rear heat/AC, and auto door locks.

I bought the van with 33,000 miles and was immediately impressed with how solid the ride was. It was a big upgrade from our 1995 Grand Caravan, which we really liked. I've had it for 6 years now and have had no major problems. I did have to get the HVAC reset when replacing the battery, and the cruise vacuum part had to be replaced, but that's it. The 3.3 engine provides the best blend of power and economy, getting 20-26 miles per gallon. The quad seating is great and the durability of the interior and exterior materials is excellent. I've had it serviced a couple of times and have had no transmission problems. Overall, this is one of the best vehicles we've ever owned!

The only issue we've had is that the engine fluctuates when the compressor comes on. However, we've been very pleased overall. We make sure to do preventative maintenance on time and the dealership has been great. I hope it lasts!

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my vehicle that I purchased brand new in 1998. After driving it for about 50,000 miles, I had an issue with the head gasket, but thankfully my extended warranty covered the repair. At 67,000 miles, the master cylinder went out, but again, my extended warranty saved the day before it expired. I have noticed that this vehicle tends to go through brakes quite quickly, and I find myself replacing them about every 8 months. However, I am happy to report that even with 140,000 miles on it, this vehicle gets better gas mileage now than when it was new! Plus, it is incredibly comfortable on long trips, and the amount of room inside is unbeatable. Thanks for listening!

Your minivan sounds amazing! It has already clocked over 200k miles and still no major problems to date. That's impressive! It also has a good ride and very good gas mileage, averaging about 22/23 MPG (a blend of highway and local).
