1999 Gmc Tahoe problems

The Chevrolet Tahoe, and its badge-engineered GMC Yukon counterpart, are full-size SUVs and other trucks from General Motors, offered since 1994 and 1991, respectively. Since 1982, Chevrolet and GMC sold two different-sized SUVs under their "Blazer" and "Jimmy" nameplates, by introducing the smaller S-10 Blazer and GMC S-15 Jimmy for the 1983 model year, below the full-size Blazer and Jimmy models. This situation lasted into the early 1990s. GMC first rebadged the full-size Jimmy as the "Yukon" in 1991. Chevrolet however waited until 1994, when they rebadged the redesigned mid-size S-10 Blazer the "new Blazer," while renaming the full-size Blazer as the "Tahoe." The name Tahoe refers to the rugged and scenic area surrounding Lake Tahoe in the western United States, and was originally used as a trim level on S-10 models. The name Yukon refers to the Yukon territory of northern Canada.

For the 1995 model year, the Tahoe and Yukon gained a new, longer four-door model, slotting in size between the two-door models and the longer-wheelbase Chevrolet/GMC Suburbans.

The Tahoe is sold in North America, parts of Asia such as the Philippines, and the Middle East, plus other countries including Bolivia, Chile, Peru, Colombia, Ecuador, and Angola as a left-hand-drive vehicle. The Yukon is only sold in North America and the Middle East.

The Chevrolet Tahoe and GMC Yukon are part of General Motors' full-size SUV family and are differentiated from the similar Chevrolet Suburban and GMC Yukon XL primarily by the length of the passenger and cargo area behind the C-pillar. An upscale trim GMC Denali sub-model joined the Yukon lineup as the top-of-the-line trim for the 1999 model year; the Cadillac Escalade is a closely related upscale version sharing the same platform. The Denali is available on both standard and XL versions.

The Tahoe has regularly been the best-selling full-size SUV in the United States, frequently outselling its competition by two to one.

Common 1999 Gmc Tahoe problems

The 1999 Chevrolet Tahoe, like other vehicles, has its share of common problems reported by owners. Here are some of the most prevalent issues:

  • Leaking Intake Gaskets: The intake gaskets on the 1st gen Tahoe can leak coolant, which can cause coolant to leak on the ground or mix with the engine oil. This can damage the engine if not addressed promptly. The intake is located in the center of the engine in between the two heads. Coolant passes from one head to the other though the intake. The gasket can leak internally on the 1st gen Tahoe and mix coolant with the oil. The coolant may also leak externally.
  • Power Steering Problems: The power steering pump tends to fail on the 1st gen Tahoe, causing a loss of power steering and requiring more manual effort to turn the steering wheel. Check the power steering pump for leaking or visible damage. Remove the serpentine belt and slide the pulley off to see if it sheared from the power steering pump. If any of these signs appear, replace the power steering pump.
  • Windshield Wiper Problems: The windshield wiper board controls the windshield wipers. Moisture can accumulate inside, causing the wipers not to work. Sometimes a bad windshield wiper stalk can cause issues with the wipers. The windshield wiper board is located on the wiper motor under a protective cover. If in an emergency, tap the board or the motor with a hammer to get the wipers temporarily working. If the board has failed, the board needs to be replaced.
  • Door Handle Problems: The inside and outside door handles can break and snap off the door. Sometimes the door latch can bind or the inside door handle can break from a weak spot. The outside door handle can also creak and break. Replace the broken door handle.
  • Service 4WD Message: This annoying message has affected more than a dozen Chevy Tahoes over the years. The main culprit is the faulty selector switch or transfer case encoder sensor, which causes the dreaded message to appear.
  • Cracked Dashboard: One of the most complained about issues with the Tahoe is the cracked dashboard. Sure, it’s mostly a cosmetic issue, but it’s an aggravating problem nonetheless.
  • Low Oil Pressure: Another severe reliability issue with the Tahoe is the low oil pressure. Many drivers reported that engine performance decreased on top of the illuminating check engine light.
  • A/C System Stopped Working: Encountering this issue would be unbearable on a hot day. There are several reasons why the Tahoe A/C system fails: a refrigerant leak, electrical issues, and a faulty A/C compressor. The typical repair job to fix this problem is to replace the broken parts like the compressor or condenser.
  • Transmission Issues: Some of the Chevy Tahoe models that had transmission struggles include generations 2007 to 2009, as well as the 2015 Chevy Tahoe with the infamous 6L80 transmission. The 2015 model even went through a recall due to the cooler line leak, and this caused drivers to have problems with harsh shifting and transmission slippage.
  • Faulty Airbag Systems: The 2015 Chevrolet Tahoe model suffered from faulty airbag systems and was once again a part of the large recall. Some of the main include a cracking dashboard due to a design flaw and the A/C system that usually stopped working as soon as within 55,000 miles. So, the 2015 model year remains one of the most unreliable Chevy Tahoe production years along with 2007.
  • StabiliTrak and Traction Control Warnings: One common problem that might be more annoying than harmful is the service StabiliTrak message that popped up on the dashboards of many Tahoe drivers. While it’s an important system that improves traction on slippery roads, the message was also falsely displayed. It’s often due to electronic issues or faulty ABS sensors. It’s also possible that certain combustion problems like misfires could cause the StabiliTrak message to show up on the board.

These are some of the most common problems reported by 1999 Chevrolet Tahoe owners. It is important to note that not all vehicles of this model will experience these issues, but potential buyers should be aware of them. Regular maintenance and inspections can help prevent or address many of these problems.
