This can be a significant safety concern, as it may affect the driver's ability to control the vehicle properly.

Additionally, there have been reports of various other electrical issues, including problems with dashboard warning lights, exterior lighting, the infotainment system, and electronic rearview mirrors. These issues can range from minor inconveniences to significant problems that may affect the vehicle's safety and reliability.

SUSPENSION,STRUCTURE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-03-17
  • VIN: WA1LFAFP9DA
  • Components: SUSPENSION,STRUCTURE
  • Summary: The rear subframe has plastic "stone guards" to protect the frame from being damaged in off-road conditions. Where these stone guards are attached, the subframe has rotted/rusted large holes. Water and salt from winter seasons can get trapped behind these guards. A subframe on a vehicle at this age should NOT have complete holes rotted through. Let alone a vehicle brand such as Audi, known for quality. The rear subframe connects the rear suspension and AWD drivetrain to the unibody of the vehicle. This is a major safety concern. It has not been inspected by the manufacturer; my Audi dealer denied this could happen. I am part of a few Audi groups/forums with others facing the same issues, and Audi replacing the subframe under the corrosion warranty. This is a widespread issue amongst the forums. There are no warnings or symptoms as of yet. I noticed the holes 3/17/24. The vehicle has been somewhat sufficient to operate. I just don't want to be traveling down the road with my family in the vehicle if the subframe collapses. I am afraid to fully remove the stone guards as others on the forums claimed that Audi would do nothing for them after removing the guards. Being that they are "protection".

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-03-15
  • VIN: WA1LFAFP7DA
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: Car was telling me to add 1 qt of oil about every 1500-2000 miles, even after a recent oil change. So I took it to the place I purchased the car from and they replaced the timing chain gasket thing. About a week later the same issue came back. So I took it to Audi to have the same thing replaced. And about a month later the issue came back. Took it back to Audi and they said now the Engine speed sensor seal is leaking oil. I’ve did some research and I’ve found that there is a manufacturing engine defect that causes this reoccurring issue and most Q5 owners have stopped spending money on repairs and just tops off the oil when asked.

AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2020-12-05
  • VIN: WA1LFAFP8DA
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: I took my vehicle to Audi South Austin on 6/1/22 regarding my A/C and back up camera not working, continuous oil consumption issue, passenger air bag light turning on, and RPM higher than normal while idling. Christina Turner told me that the wait for my car to be service was 3-4 weeks. She quoted me a price of $275 for each diagnostic test. I mentioned a recall regarding the auxiliary heater and she told me that the recall had previously been completed. I asked her if there was a warranty and she mentioned that it was 12 months/ 12,000 miles and that my vehicle was over that time frame. I have took my vehicle serval times to Audi South Austin regarding the oil and coolant consumption. The first service was on 12/5/20regarding an oil change, multi point inspection, and coolant topped off. I was told if I had any issues with the oil or coolant consumption to let them know. I took my vehicle to Audi North Austin on 2/8/21 regarding my coolant and oil consumption. The told me that I had an oil and coolant leak. When I mentioned the recall of the coolant pump, they told me that the oil leak caused the coolant leak and wouldn’t be covered. I notified Audi South Austin regarding the issues and asked them why they didn’t notice the oil leak during the oil change and inspection. They told me that they would do the recall issue and charge me approximately $5,000 for the oil leak. After showing them the invoice from Audi North of the oil charge being approximately $1,500, they offered the same amount. I have returned to Audi South Austin regarding the oil consumption and oil marks on the side of my car and they technician tells me that it’s normal for my make and model to consume oil and that I would just have to add oil. I’m worried that there is an electrical issue regarding the auxiliary recall and could catch fire while I’m driving. I also have 2 children and it’s difficult driving in 96 degrees weather without A/C and having to wait 3-4 weeks.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-07-29
  • Fire: 1
  • VIN: WA1DGAFP5DA
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
  • Summary: My daughter drove her car to Hobby Lobby in Opelika, AL. After being in the store for about 7 minutes they announced over the intercom for the owner of a black audi to come to the front. They told her that her car was on fire. She went outside and black smoke and fire was coming from the hood. A lady had already called 911. While waiting, flames started coming from the bottom of the car. The police arrived and started trying to put the fire out, then firefighters arrived and put the fire out. After the fire was put out, the car kept trying to start itself so they had to locate the battery to disconnect it. Luckily the firefighters were a few stores down and was able to get to it quick. The car is available for inspection and we feel that this is some type of malfunction that we shouldn't be responsible for. A fire is very dangerous and could have hurt or killed my daughter if it had caught fire with her in it and also it catching fire around other cars that put others in danger or if it would have been at night at home under our carport and ended up catching our house on fire! The car has not been inspected by anyone. We didn't have full coverage insurance since I had just changed our policy since where I worked closed down so in the meantime of going from full coverage insurance to liability for a month and a half, this happened. So now we don't really know what to do, as we feel this isn't something we should have to pay for. We feel that Audi should be responsible for this malfunction/defect. No warnings and we have our vehicles maintenanced regularly.

The sunroof drainage system may allow water to soak into the foam surrounding the side head air bag inflator canister resulting in the corrosion of the canister. If this happens, the corrosion can weaken the canister and the inflator could fracture without air bag deployment, propelling fragments into the passenger compartment, striking and causing serious injury to vehicle occupants.
  • Consequence: An inflator rupture may result in metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants resulting in serious injury or death.
  • Remedy: Audi will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the inflator and either coat it or replace it, as necessary, after removing the surrounding foam, free of charge. The recall is expected to began March 2017. Owners may contact Audi customer service at 1-800-253-2834. Volkswagen's number for this recall is 69P1.

Negative 2013 Audi Q5 car reviews

I've been dreaming of owning this car for four years and finally got the chance to purchase it after test driving all other vehicles in its class. When I bought it, it only had 35k miles and was a lease return. I made sure to have new rotors and brake pads installed. I've been driving it for less than a year and have already put 20k miles on it. I had no issues with the 45k mile service, but when I took it in for the 55k service, I was informed that it needed new brake pads and rotors, a brake fluid flush, and an oil pressure valve replacement. On top of that, the 'normal' maintenance at 55k miles cost $399, bringing the total to $2,300. Although I knew that Audi's can be expensive to fix, I was disappointed to find out that the factory parts, such as brake pads and rotors, were of poor quality. I take pride in driving my car gently and only occasionally speed and brake when needed. However, I have had issues with the Bluetooth and navigation. Overall, I am disappointed with my experience and have lost faith in Audi. I do not feel that this car is worth the price tag and will not be purchasing one again.

Although we bought this car 2 years ago with 82K miles, we are disappointed to report that the driver's side door lock mechanism, rear hatchback motor, front struts, and motor mounts all need replacing at only 105K miles. As a loyal customer of this premium German car manufacturer, we expected better quality and longevity from our vehicle. The estimated cost of repairs is approximately $4000. We have a history of keeping our cars for a long time and usually don't replace these types of items until over 200K miles. In fact, we are considering going back to Lexus, as our last Audi did not have these issues.

I purchased a used 2012 Audi Q5 three years ago, and it has now accumulated 80,000 miles over its seven-year lifespan. Recently, I had to replace the engine and turbo at a cost of $14,000 due to a faulty timing chain tensioner. Unfortunately, this is a known defect, and there was even a class action suit filed, as noted in another review. Despite being a loyal customer, Audi/VW has not taken any action to address this issue, and even those few admitted into the class had to provide full service records and have their repairs prorated by mileage. It is disappointing that a car that cost $45,000 would require a new engine at only 80,000 miles. I suspect that the company may have suffered losses due to emission gate and the airbag recall, but it is still a shame. Although my last five cars were VW/Audi's, and my family members are also loyalists, I will have to reconsider my options in the future.

I had a terrible experience with my Audi Q5. Despite the engine type being covered in other models, Audi refused to assist me with the high pressure fuel pump and turbo failures, as well as other issues. Even though there are multiple class actions against Audi Q5, they refused to reimburse me for the $10k of repairs I had to pay for. Unfortunately, the brand no longer stands behind their cars or cares about their customers after being purchased by VW. I hope Audi takes responsibility for their defective tensioner and improves their customer service in the future.

I purchased this car brand new in 2012. Unfortunately, after four years, the engine stopped working due to a timing chain defect. The dealership quoted me $6,100 to replace the top half of the engine, but they refused to cover any of the costs. I was disappointed with this outcome, especially since the car was relatively new and had only been driven for around 75,000 miles. I made sure to take good care of the car, getting regular oil changes and scheduled maintenance. If you're considering buying an Audi Q5, I would advise against it. It's important to do your research online, especially regarding the timing chain and transmission, as these vehicles are not always well-made.

Just bought a 2013 Audi Q5 3.0. It's a great car to drive with lots of power. It has all the luxury items and looks really good. Unfortunately, the backup camera is not working properly. It will come on sometimes for a second but then shuts off. I'm hoping the dealer will be able to help me with this issue.

Great car overall! Just a heads up for families, the two tailpipes extend a bit too far out from the car and can be a hazard. I actually got a crescent-shaped burn on my shin when I let the dog out of the back. Three small boys were also almost burned by these pipes while eating a snack off the back. Since then, I've noticed that most car makers do a better job of hiding the tailpipe under the bumper. Additionally, the rear door doesn't stop quickly enough and can be dangerous for small objects in its path. My 9-year-old son had it push down on him. Just be sure to keep bags, body parts, and dog paws out of the way in time!

Great vehicle! I'm glad to hear that you haven't had any issues since purchasing the Q5. It's great that you were able to purchase it used from a dealership with only 12000 miles. The Audi service sounds like it has been outstanding, which is always a plus. It's also great that the car came with a prepaid scheduled maintenance plan from the previous owners. Thank you for sharing! Your wife is the primary driver and commutes many miles for work, and it's good to hear that the two young children in the back seat have no problem fitting in forward and rear-facing child seats. The only complaint you mentioned is about the MMI, and I agree that it can be a bit frustrating. Additionally, I understand your concern about the lack of a separate button to control fan speed for HVAC. Thank you for sharing your experience with us!

I'm so glad to hear that you're enjoying your Q5 premium plus 2.0 turbo! It sounds like you've had a great experience with it over the past 10 months. The mileage and comfort seem to be top-notch, and it's great to hear that the Bluetooth has been such a useful feature for you. It's always nice to have hands-free communication while driving. I hope your colleague enjoys their Q5 just as much as you do!

  5. Lloyd Block 2024-08-01

The ride is really smooth and easy to handle on the road. It's also great on gas consumption. The V6 3.2L engine is highly recommended, as the V4 2.0L engine still has some issues with oil leaks. If you're in the market for a mid-size luxury SUV, this is definitely a strong contender. It's best to buy certified-used, and the Off-Lease option is great because it verifies that the vehicle was maintained at the Audi dealership.
